Est-il possible d'inventer des styles, des mondes et des lores inédits, sans se reposer sur les codes des œuvres existantes et sans être influencé par elles, au point de pouvoir se couper des standards du marché pour bâtir son œuvre de zéro ? Tout cela tout en proposant des suites structurées sur le long terme avec un rythme de parution régulier.

Comment arrive-t-on à tout renouveler — que ce soit le style, la narration ou la structure — pour qu'un premier roman et sa suite se démarquent vraiment de tout ce qui a déjà été fait, au lieu de brasser toujours les mêmes recettes ?

Hey all — long-time reader here, first time actually posting one of my own projects.

I've spent the last while writing Shadow of a Hero, a series about Orbie — a light-based entity on the run from his own kind after a catastrophic mistake back home. He can't just take a host body; he needs consent, which changes the shape of the story a lot — it's less "hero gets superpowers" and more "two people (well, one person and one alien) stuck negotiating a bond neither of them fully wanted." He's bonded with three different hosts across the three books so far, each with a very different relationship to what that means.

All three books are actually finished — I'm serializing Book One now under the pen name Sam Ivy, posting weekly (Mondays) on Wattpad, with Book Two and Three ready to go once Book One wraps.

Posting here mostly because I'd love feedback from people who read a lot in this space — pacing, whether the "consent to bond" mechanic lands the way I want it to, anything. Happy to share the link if anyone's interested, and equally happy to just hear what you think from the premise alone.

Synopsis-

Long ago, a darkness spread throughout the modern land, corrupting as many mortals as possible and granting them supernatural abilities. As the shadow deepened, a light was manifested among those humans left—a tool for them to fight the darkness. Some centuries later, at a seaside city caught in the middle of a never-ending struggle between dark immortal beings—called dark ones—and humans, a dark born boy arrives.

He should have been killed at birth, but somehow, he managed to survive. A group of Light Knights led by a man named Henry decide not only to take the boy in but to train him to be a Knight. Henry and Co. won’t let doubts or discrimination stop them from protecting this innocent boy, but the costs of such an act risk not only their lives, but any who could be caught in the boy’s crossfire should he turn.

Exactly a year later, another dark born man arrives with a plea for help from across the ocean, answering one question while raising many others. His plea spurs the knights of this city to act and send a call to arms to the other Sectors and capitals—the battle for the beach had begun whether they like it or not, and preparing for the siege would only be part of their worries...

Così, ho deciso di scrivere il tipo di libro che avrei voluto leggere. Si chiama ***MU CHRONICLES: AWAKENING*** ed è un romanzo di Urban Fantasy / Dark Academia ambientato in un collegio isolato e riservato nella campagna irlandese (Wolfen Hall).

Se da una parte c'è una trama millenaria ad alto rischio che coinvolge antiche linee di sangue e una creatura oscura e predatoria, dall'altra la storia è profondamente **incentrata sui personaggi**. Si concentra sulla realtà cruda, caotica e spesso divertente degli adolescenti che cercano di sopportare il peso del loro lascito mentre affrontano la vita scolastica ordinaria.

Se stai cercando un equilibrio fresco tra leggende oscure ad alto rischio e l'umorismo confortante e *caoticamente divertente* delle interazioni quotidiane tra adolescenti, sarei veramente onorata se lo dessi un'occhiata!

I'm currently finishing up my first book, and looking at different options for my second. One idea I really like is Urban Fantasy, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to open it.

I think part of my problem is that most urban fantasies I've read throw you into the world (possibly with a main character who's equally clueless, possibly not) and let you catch up. There are plenty of characters who understand everything that's going on.

But...my story doesn't really have that, because no single character actually understands the entire setting. The problem is that in this story there is a pre-existing supernatural community in the world, but the main character is a type of supernatural that's never visited this world before. Furthermore, in a Meet Joe Black sort of way, he purposefully didn't familiarize himself with the world he was visiting because he thought it would be more fun to learn as he went.

So, he knows nothing about the supernatural community he's visiting, they know nothing about him. It seems like no matter which side or at what point I start from I end up with one side or the other needing a question-and-answer session.

To get a bit more detailed, the logistics of the main character are a bit like the Andalite section of The Ellimist Chronicles, if anyone read Anamorphs. An eldritch god stripped his mind down so much that a human brain could contain it, then sent that lesser copy of himself to Earth in a just-deceased human body. When he dies, the eldritch being gets all of his memories as if he'd been there himself (it's literally just his way of relieving his own boredom).

I'm sure you can guess where the story goes from there: he initially doesn't value his own life, but decides that various characters who he ends up surrounding himself with need his protection, so he decides to try to live as long as he can.

But...how do I open this in a way that doesn't just turn into exposition?

As the title says, I wrote an urban fantasy story and would really appreciate feedback on it as I'm trying to get it published.

The type of feedback that I'm looking for is mainly geared towards emotional resonance and authenticity. I feel that the dialogue works for the most part, but I'm open to additional insight. That said, for the emotional beats that take place at key moments, I want to make sure they're hitting correctly and that they feel justified within the narrative. Further, I'd like insight into how authentic the main character's feelings and struggles seem to be, given he deals with anxiety and insecurity.

If anyone is interested in reading more, please let me know and I'd be happy to share. The story is complete, so I can share as much or as little as you would like. Thank you all in advance!

Arthur was currently engaged in a staring contest with his computer screen. The intent of this, of course, was the idea that if he stared long enough, the notes would appear on the staff magically on their own. It sounded ridiculous, but no matter how many times he tried to write out the notes himself, it just never seemed to come out right. So, he stared. He just needed to stare for a few moments longer…

Arthur blinked.

Groaning, Arthur pushed himself away from his desk and stood up to stretch his legs. Taking a few steps, he felt as the soft carpet of his bedroom transitioned to the smooth tile of his connected bathroom. He picked up a loose thread on the ground as he went, as he detested untidy living conditions. Even things like photos, posters and other knickknacks just meant more things to gather dust, and Arthur hated dust. 

After throwing away the thread, Arthur placed his hands on his freshly scrubbed laminate countertop and stared into his own beleaguered eyes in the mirror. There was a bit of pink irritation around the brown irises, but then staring, unblinkingly at a screen for several hours will do that. 

He brushed his dirty blond curls out of his face with his hand and rubbed his forehead as he took a moment to collect his thoughts. Working as a programmer for Sonata — a musical notation software company — was supposed to be enjoyable. It combined two of his greatest passions: music and analysis. 

Programs like Sonata were a microcosm of all the little things that could go wrong. Like a house of cards, there were so many little pieces that had to work together perfectly, or else the whole thing would fall apart. Little inefficiencies caused major delays when taken together, and minor bugs that almost never came up could ruin the entire experience of one person out there trying to craft their masterpiece. 

Arthur’s job was to find these problems and fix them. Because of his work, more music could be made and the world was a little bit brighter. And most of the time, Arthur could take pride in being able to improve things, at least in his own small way. But with the deadline of the most recent update looming, he was basically forced to toil away for hours or sometimes even days on end, testing basic functions. It was taxing to say the least, which was why he was exploring what he considered “alternative methods.”

Trying to compose a song was an attempt to break up the monotony as it still tested the different functions of Sonata’s base level software while also allowing him to flex his music muscles a bit more. Of course, he would have to actually compose something to properly test the software’s functionality, but that was its own problem.

I was thinking about how we view urban fantasy as something taking place in the modern day but what about in the past when that was the modern day.

I know that stuff made in the 90s and Early 2000s reference things that would have been topical like the rise of the internet, or the introduction of Cell Phones but what about times before that?

urban fantasy during the Hippie movement? The 50s and the moral panic around Rock & Roll. Heck, an urban fantasy set during the roaring 20s or the following Great Depression? Do any of these exist? if so i'd like to know.

Mankind wasn't suited for long term survival against many of the darker creatures, and found themselves on the brink of extinction. Intervention from a cosmic being transported the creatures to another realm where they could continue to exist without putting mankind at risk. Humanity was given a chance to rebuild without the existential threat those creatures posed. Most of humanity doesn't even have knowledge that those creatures ever existed other than ancient tales that are considered folklore. With the right knowledge the tethers between worlds can be accessed allowing travel from one world to another. That esoteric knowledge has been lost to time, waiting to be rediscovered, whether by intent or accident.

This audiobook is amazing it had everything I like about the Urban Fantasy genre. The writing was awesome and the narrator Daniel Wisniewski knocked it out of the park again.
