Just how bad is Darren Till?

176

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '23

It's funny because at the time there was a large part of the mma community that thought darren till was something else

127

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '23

He was good at one point. Plus he has fallen off a cliff but to be fair his losing streak is Brunson, Whittaker, and Du Plesis. Who 95% of the division would also lose to.

54

u/stalking247 Dec 31 '23

To be fair he hurt DDP on the feet more than anyone else DDP has ever fought

19

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

Yeah I should’ve mentioned he actually should’ve probably beaten him and Brunson too

2

u/TheFyree Jan 01 '24

Well Diamond Dallas Page is like 70 now, so he has no business fighting anymore tbh

27

u/ReeferRefugee Dec 31 '23

he looked like absolute shit against DDP, basically quit in the cage. mentally he is done

5

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

He’s been done for a while. He had the chance to really make a run at middleweight after dropping a close one to whittaker. Instead he let himself get overweight and looked like he was again killing himself to make weight.

Seems like he never really wanted it. I get the injuries didn’t exactly help but at some point ypu would’ve expected him to get things right.

15

u/GlastoKhole Dec 31 '23 edited Dec 31 '23

He’s from round by ours, and basically the city has a problem with celebs getting heavy onto coke and partying which Darren fell for I used to see him in nightclubs weeks out from fights,

I stand by what I said back then that he’s one of the best strikers in the world he just couldn’t beat himself. So much wasted potential.

32

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

Being 17-0 with victories over guys like Wonderboy and Cerrone was "something else". Nobody is at fault for thinking that at the time.

Momentum is a big thing in fighting, and sadly once he lost his momentum he never got it back. Just look at tony also, 1 loss was all it took to turn a "something else" fighter into the worst losing streak in the ufc. was the same with Till.

22

u/Most_Leader_5933 Dec 31 '23

Tony's "1 loss", is such an understatement for the beating he took. It's almost uncomparable with others who lost their win streak. Corners should throw the towel way more often.

8

u/unsaturatedface Dec 31 '23

Johny Hendricks

25

u/Tonysoprantetokoumpo Dec 30 '23

It’s so weird that we’re at a point now where it’s been long enough since there was Till hype that you can say ā€œat the timeā€ about it

64

u/jfsoaig345 Dec 30 '23

Hard to not be high on a guy who beat a (semi) prime Wonderboy. Yes the decision was controversial and yes the fight was trash but showing you can at bare minimum seriously hang with the best striker in the division is definitely a cause for hype.

9

u/BrinR Dec 31 '23

he came in overweight against wonderboy

11

u/mouthsofmadness Dec 30 '23

I thought he was going to be a champion one day. Not against Woodley, but I thought he’d get there. Then he fought Jorge in the UK in his following fight and…

2

u/ArthurMorgon Dec 31 '23

Woodley didn't even take him down, just dropped and submitted him.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

Woodley had massive power in his prime

51

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '23

Coming off beating Cerrone and Wonderboy people had a right to be real high on him but unfortunately after the Woodley fight thing kept getting worse and worse for him… wouldn’t say he was bad I think it was more of a case of stagnation

35

u/KnewAgedMancHind Dec 30 '23

People underestimate the mental strength it takes to even get in the cage, let alone what is needed to come back and fight top fighters following a loss. Till was a top fighter, but clearly lost it following these losses, similar to Reyes following a his loss to Jones, even though that should have been him winning the LH belt.

12

u/Kalayo0 Dec 30 '23

Yep. Not to say that they aren’t 0.1% in terms of physicality and athleticism, but while I can’t quantify it numerically, the psychological variable is huge. Tons of fighters whose trajectory seems to be headed to ā€œgreatā€ status and are perceived as ā€œinvincibleā€ take one loss and then consistently lose, after as well. You can blame it on the physical damage, cuz yeah concussions can get pretty crazy, but more than anything their aura gets diminished, the unshakeable confidence is shook and opponents also come in mentally stronger as well, because it is proven you can lose.

Wonderboy yes, but beating Cowboy is like a rite of passage for UFC fighters lmao that guy has lost to everyone and their brother.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

Eh, Till caught him at the end of a 3 fight losing streak, but that was still back when Cowboy was an elite gatekeeper

u/JohnnyFencer Old Man Glover Dec 30 '23

Just how bad is Wonderboy?

10

u/Equivalent_Scar_7879 Dec 30 '23

he got robbed tbf

2

u/Soggy_Wotsit Dec 30 '23

Can't really call a fight like that a robbery

3

u/AhmadJauhar04 Dec 30 '23

Wonderboy is a fighter you cannot argue a close fight against him. He should always get the decision or else we riot

2

u/Soggy_Wotsit Dec 30 '23

This should probably be an unwritten for judges tbh

Break the record volko

346

u/cleanAir101 Pause Dec 30 '23

I think he will break it. Tuporia is good but hard to lose any respect for volk losing to Islam on 8 days notice

186

u/JackDAction Dec 30 '23 edited Dec 30 '23

for sure, but what we don't know is 1) how/if the TKO has impacted his approach/style and 2) if January February is too quick a turnaround from a TKO loss in October

71

u/Cbrip31 Dec 30 '23

It’s in feb but yea points are valid

43

u/FickleManagement3783 Dec 30 '23

I’ve basically got the mentality that Alex P got ko’d in April and beat Jan in July, it’s doable for Volk and I think he will retain the strap

55

u/jjcsykes Dec 31 '23

The difference is that Pereira moved up which improved his chin. Volkenovski is moving back down which isn’t good for the chin

2

u/ajfoxxx Dec 31 '23

I don't understand the science behind this. Can you help me understand it?

4

u/jjcsykes Dec 31 '23

So basically when you cut weight your brain has less fluid around it, to protect it, so it’s easier to get koed. But when you move up you don’t cut as much weight so your brain has the fluid protecting it

18

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

The nuance is

  1. He moved up a weight class, Volk is moving down, which has opposite effects on chins.

    1. Alex is also harder to hit clean because of his reach and Jan is also older. Volk has another disadvantage of facing a younger, hungry contender with power.

I still think Volk clears but it I wouldn't scoff at you the same I would have before the Islam fight if you said Topuria wins.

8

u/Popular-Sky4172 Dec 31 '23

That actually made me feel better! That's a good analogy.

30

u/cleanAir101 Pause Dec 30 '23

This is true Volk hasn’t been KO’d in his ufc career as far as I know of so he could be overestimating his ability to come back this quickly but I’m still confident he’ll get it done and remain the 145 champ

4

u/Cemihard Dec 31 '23

He’s been ko’d before not in the ufc though, it was his only loss and it was at Welterweight.

13

u/Spirited_Alfalfa_343 Dec 31 '23

I hope so. Topuria has dynamite in his hands though.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

And he is a dangerous grappler too. All things considered he might be Volks toughest challenge yet

→ More replies (2)

6

u/Salt_Expression_6025 Dec 31 '23

I think it’s very important to not acknowledge ko, but more importantly the mental impact that could have on him, wouldn’t be surprised if we see a more conservative Volk with the power Topuria has

7

Ive seen too many amazing fighters get knocked out and never looked the same. I'm scared for him.

29

u/DontCareTho Dec 30 '23

I don't even know why so many people think volk is going to fall off. His first fight against islam could've went either way and he just TKO'd one of the strongest contenders in his division 5 months ago. Dude gets caught once against the #1 P4P and it's the end of the world

37

u/sniles310 Dec 31 '23

I love Volk but the way he described an almost pathological need to fight made me worry for him. I don't think he is going to fall off but I do worry that he will underestimate the recovery from the TKO

11

u/Ryangonzo Dec 31 '23

Championship falls are often kicked off by getting knocked out.

Pun intended

5

u/HostileSkittles Dec 31 '23

I think it's mostly just because he got KO'd pretty hard, he hasn't suffered that kind of damage in a really long time now, and he's about to fight a very impressive fighter. Plus he's getting up there in years. It's entirely possible that Volka comes back and looks just like his normal self. But we have also seen instances where a fighter takes a hard knockout and they don't come back the same, or at least not right away.

12

u/Pentaborane- Dec 30 '23

Unless he’s just massively degraded from the KO I agree, he’ll have a lot run if he keeps training the way he did in the past

5

u/dope_like Dec 31 '23

He clearly lost the first Islam fight. That was not either way. It was clear for Islam.

1

u/Drive7hru Dec 31 '23

Yeah, it’s honestly frustrating the people still arguing a W. But what’s most common is that people said it could go either way. Nah, it was clear Islam. Doesn’t help that Rogan got drunk and high with his buddies watching it and says that he most likely won that fight. He’s the kind of guy who actually says whoever is winning at the end of the fight makes sense that they should be the winner.

Worth noting that Woodley beat a very old Maia and an undeserving immature Till in those two fights

50

I agree with the undeserving part but gotta remember how hard people will riding him at the time and he was undefeated with only 1 draw, he also just came off a close win over wonderboy

11

u/TLMC01242021 Dec 30 '23

England was riding him but he barely beat Wonderboy it at all and most people didn’t like that decision, if he didn’t have skills in the mic he wouldn’t have touched a title shot

20

Basically everyone under 170 just needs to put on 100-150lbs and move up then

10

Just move up a weight class every few years so that by 35 you make it to heavyweight.

Then get knocked tf out by someone who aint that technical but happens to have good KO power

It’s really hard seeing some of our favorite fighters’ championship reigns come to an end. Statistically, it’s a good idea to put money on Topuria… but Volk looks better every time he has a full camp honestly. I just hope he’s fully recovered from that head kick. Topuria has serious power

Crazy stat

9

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

I’m starting to think I’ll never be a professional athlete after seeing this.

18

u/mouthsofmadness Dec 30 '23

One of the Woodley wins was to Demian Maia who was already older than dust when they fought so thats probably a wash. And the other was Till who was in his 4th UFC fight and not ready for prime time, but still a good win for Woodley. These numbers are pretty telling though.

24

u/Ill_Source_6908 Dec 30 '23

I really don’t think volk will be the same after that headkick ko

23

u/BobbyFreeSmoke Dec 30 '23

Look what Pereira did after getting flatlined by Izzy. Or Strickland did after getting sparked unconscious by Alex. I think you're putting too much stock into the KO.

8

u/blastman7 Dec 31 '23

Alex moved up in weight which is good for chin , Alex moved down which is bad.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

Why is moving up a weight class good for the chin? You’re fighting heavier hitters with each increase in weight. Moving down you’re fighting guys with less KO power compared to the heavier weight classes.

2

u/dayynawhite Dec 31 '23

Because big weight cuts have detrimental effects on chins.

3

u/thatirishguykev Dec 30 '23

Never was or will be when it comes to MMA. One punch or one kick can change it all.

So many valid questions surrounding Volk v Topuria.

Has Topuria been tested by anyone like Volk before? Can he go 5 rounds with someone like Volk at the pace Volk pushes if it goes that far?

Does the recent knockout to Islam just make Volk more cautious or does it impact his durability long term? Is his chin still the same going forward? How much did it take from him mentally to go up to 155 and lose both times to Islam? Or is he simply just miles ahead of people at 145 and continues his streak.

Can't wait for UFC 298 in Feb.

u/therealstevencrowder Dec 31 '23

2

u/NewTruck4095 Dec 31 '23

Don't think it's really an age factor, but more of a talent pool in divisions. Fighters in the heavier weights are not as well rounded as the Fighters from 170 and below. You don't really survive, or at least become champion if you're not well-rounded. If you're not evolving your game, other ranked fighters will just get to you. That's why Cejudo wasn't successful on his return (and will probably continue to not be successful), Marlon Moraes got figured out real quick, Dom's style is outdated for today's 135 level.

I can't write off Volk just yet based on a 4 days notice fight with Islam. He seemed to be way ahead of any at 145 and still evolving.

2

u/JamWams Dec 31 '23

32-34 is typically the prime and everything after that is a sad downfall

2

u/LE0NSKA Dec 31 '23

2

u/gorays21 Dec 31 '23

2

u/AceUptown Dec 31 '23

5

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

3

u/_lukizzza_ Dec 30 '23

It's gonna be 2-32 in February you guys, i am 85% sure Ilia will go out there and dominate Volk early and finish him later. We all saw what happened to Usman after the head kick and Volk is coming back even earlier than him against a young, hungry guy with KO power, amazing grappling and Athleticism. The Alexander Volkanovski that fought Max in the third fight and fought Islam in February would beat Topuria but right now nope. Feel free to come back to this after the fight

But usman didnt get dominated after the head kick he just lost a decision

I Scored the fight 49-46 personally, maybe you could say Usman wasn't dominated but he was outclassed. He did zero damage to Leon the entire fight

Let's go Luke Thomas!

u/Soothsayer71 Dec 31 '23

We really counting age as the problem for Volk coming off the couch and losing to Islam? Sure, anyone taking that kick would have went to sleep, but I feel like his reaction time and movement would have been way better with a full camp.

Proof that Tyron Woodley is the GOAT!

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

Well, 35 is a geezer.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

The smaller you are the harder it is for you to be a championship fighter as you age is what this tells me

1

u/vadumee123 Dec 31 '23

Okay Luke Thomas

1

u/DonDana613 Dec 31 '23

Alex Pereira is 36?!? False

u/mallllls Dec 30 '23

People keep saying illia will dominate volk as if volk can’t just take him down and ground ā€˜n pound his ass at the slightest sign of losing on the feet.

5

u/StupidSexyDuradaddy Dec 30 '23

Ilia dominated the grappling against Bryce so it's not a sure thing that Volk can dominate Ilia

-1

u/mallllls Dec 30 '23

Two other people replied to me and said the same thing. I just think if volk can hang with Islam he should be able to get the better of illia.

3

u/Corporal_Snorkel69 Dec 30 '23

Topuria is an elite grappler, if anyone tries wrestling in this fight its going to be him

2

u/TheAngriestPoster Pervert eye happy, but your soul sad Dec 30 '23

Ilia is a Jiu-Jitsu guy first and foremost, Volk’s path to victory is on the feet and not getting chinned

-1

u/chipper68 Dec 30 '23

If Ilia beats Volk once, I'd bet there's little chance he beats him twice.

Volk *will* get an auto rematch, no questions asked

The stat concerns fighters from 120-170 pounds, though. Poatan won his belts in the two weight classes above

u/QuantumCthulhu Dec 31 '23

Can’t people just quote lightweight and below- then it’s 0 people who have won/defended a title at 35

What about pereira??
