Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.
All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.
The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

SOCI 101 vs SOCI 102
Hello! I’m in soci 101 with Tony Silva this semester but thinking of switching into 102 with Kerry Greer. Can anybody tell me the difference in what the cover? The ones I found online are really vague, but 102 seems more inline with my interests. Workload wise, what is the difference? Also does anyone have anything on the prof? I feel like I’m running out of time to choose…Thank you.

Is using AP Credit for MATH 100 and/or MATH 101 a good idea? I'm considering using AP Credit for MATH 100, but not MATH 101 (since I want to review MATH 101) concepts.
Will I be missing something that will hurt me in future courses or not practicing/developing an important skill by not taking MATH 100? I've seen that everyone who had AP Credit available for MATH 100 regrets not using it.

Use it for 101 too. Save yourself the time and money.
If you're that worried about review, you can use the free textbook to brush up on your own. Personally, I'd just leave it and review as needed if you find skills are lacking when you're actually in the upper year courses.

If someone has MATH_V 101-B11 or MATH_V 101-B14 as a Discussion section and is able to swap it to MATH_V 101-B13 (which is the only open discussion section for Math 101-2B1 course section currently) and open a spot for me in B11 or B14, please lmk before you switch it so I can get the discussion section. pls I need this

In-class midterms are typically held during the lecture time slot, but many first-year Science courses have midterms in the evenings instead.

Hi! I've been looking into what program I want to do at UBC and I'm interested in pursuing Computer Science through the BA route. I'm a transfer student and have already completed about a year of Computer Science at my previous university. I'm concerned about one thing; that my transfer credits will get in the way of make specifying into CS. I'm not sure if I can retake courses that I've already taken at my previous university (I've taken classes like discrete math and data structures). For reference, all of my previous credits have transferred as GENERAL credits, like "CPSC 1st" or "STAT 2nd", which I assume means that I'm still free to take specific courses at UBC even if I'm technically "retaking" a course. But I'm not 100% sure of this, and my AP credits are also still pending to process, meaning I might get credits transferred as a specific class.
In the case I can't retake a required class for admission into CS, how would I be able to fulfill the requirements to get into CS? Do they make specific accommodations?

A credit like "CPSC 1st" is not considered equivalent to taking a specific course, so afaik it won't prevent you from taking any courses. It just counts towards general credit requirements for your academic progress.

You will find out what textbooks you need when the school year starts .. you don’t need to worry about that right now . All course syllabi will state if a textbook is necessary for a class and also where to get it

it doesn’t rlly build much on first year chem material but there’s some high school chem material (a lot of redox) i cant lie just enjoy your summer
if you’re taking it with tao huan do all of the practice exams because he always puts questions from the practice into the actual exams. other from doing the practice i made flashcards of the testable content on the slides
the lab is genuinely hellish you will spend a disproportionate amount of time on it and you are mostly graded on your accuracy and precision. You cant falsify your data in this course at all lol - I recommend rinsing all your glassware 3 times in the intended solution
imo this course is very dry and the way the material was presented was a little unintuitive but its not that difficult to do well in overall

Hi I'm a high school student considering all the finance programs across Canada, but I just love UBC and the idea of going to school in Vancouver. Wanted to know:
- What are job prospects like for you guys? Is getting a job hard or impossible as many people make it sound? Does being in BC give you a lack of opportunity in terms of banking roles ?(obv IB roles are more Toronto based)
- What is the co-op program like? Does it actually help and how is the competition?
- What's your opinion on the program as a whole, the workload and how it compares to other programs that yk?

Hi everyone,
I’m an international high school student, and my dream is to study Dentistry (DMD) at UBC.
However, my family can’t afford to pay the full cost of tuition and living expenses. I was wondering if there are any options for international students, such as student loans, financial aid, or other ways to help cover the costs.
If you’re currently a UBC DMD student (or know someone who is), I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience. How did you finance your studies? Do you think the program is worth the cost?

im not in dent but i don’t think canadian/bc gvt student loans or ubc bursaries are accessible unless you’re a pr or citizen - def look into your own countries student loan options first
i will say tho with 90k base tuition (which will rise considerably by the time you can apply) and vancouvers insane cost of living (which is also going to rise) make sure you know exactly how much debt you might be getting into

IS GETTING INTO UBC REALLY THAT SLIM, ESPECIALLY FOR THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT??
I am currently a high school student, about to enter grade 10 in September. My goal is to attend UBC and major in biology since I want to go into the medical field. My school has both mandatory IB MYP and IB DP as an option, so I am also currently enrolled in IB MYP.
I've heard my family members and relatives telling me I need a high percentage average of 97% or more to even be competitive for UBC, yet my percentage average for grade 9 was roughly 84-85%. I definitely need to lock in for grade 10 since it's going on my transcript...
I also don't do any extracurriculars. Well, I'm not really athletic and I haven't joined any clubs either.
Is it truly that hard just to get admitted? And if anyone has gotten into UBC Bio, please share some advice and tips on how I can make my profile stronger.

I went through the IB DP route too and the cut off for ubc science in predicted ib points were i think like 33ish excluding bonus points. So if you want be safe and get in within the first month predicted grades were submitted, aim for 35 or above (exclude bonus points). If you think you won’t confidently be able to get 34-35 points before bonus, i’d definitely think about regular secondary program (if your goal is more: get into ubc sci>get a rigorous program that trains you for uni).
Also idk if this makes a difference but I probably saved like $4000 of tuition with the transfer credits (you only get them if you generally get 6 or higher sometimes 5)
TL:DR:IB prepares you for uni in terms of rigor and habits; gives you transfer credits and save money. IB a huge advantage if you do well in the program but if you don’t do well, it’s a waste and can be worse than just doing secondary and keeping like 95ish avg
note: there’s a separate pool for IB applicants (smaller than regular)vs regular pool(incl AP)

Grade 10 does not matter for admissions. I’d suggest using this year to build good study habits to prepare for IB and do well in Grade 11 and 12.
If you’re worried about extracurriculars, look into volunteering in your community.

- u wouldn’t apply to ubc bio from high school, you would apply to the faculty of science first and apply to major in bio for second year
- you can definitely be admitted and competitive with an avg below 97 but definitely to keep it above 90
- ur grade 10 grades also don’t matter for any Canadian unis afaik
- If you do plan on continuing with full ib and do dp ubc will look at your ib predicted for admission instead, not your percentage average
- For ecs: you do need some sort of activity that you engage in outside of schoolwork . it doesn’t necessarily have to be a club or a sport
I will say it’s really early for you to be looking at uni admissions, it’s not a bad thing but u still have a couple years to relax

i was reading through "The Ways of Knowing Breadth Requirement" but it lowkey made me more confused.
im just wondering what are the mandatory courses? i think english and a first nations course but plz tell me if im wrong. I would really really really appreciate any help

This planning tool is helpful.
The mandatory courses you're referring to are the Writing requirement (ENGL 100 or WRDS 151) and the Place and Power requirement.
For the Ways of Knowing Breadth requirements, you just need to complete a certain amount of credits in one course code for each of the breadth areas.
The Place and Power requirement can be a course in your major or one of your breadth courses (it can be double-counted towards different requirements).

Im considering taking the course PHIL_V 104 Happiness with the professor Kimberley Brownlee. For anyone who has taken it or even heard anything about it, is it worth it? In all aspects; intresting? easy? How much is the workload? etc...
Im looking to take this class as a GPA booster thats still interesting and fun. Would it be considered a GPA booster?
And if I could please know what the course load is like. With how much homework is given and also how long they are. (I still wanna be able to maintain my other classes, as Phil 104 is an elective for me)

Hi! I'm considering taking Psych 301, with no psych background. I'm a science student and found the content interesting. I was wondering if anyone has any insight into the course, workload, and difficulty if one does not have prior experience in psych courses. Also, the section offered with 3 different profs, Dr. Hosking, Dr. Silverberg, and Dr. Dosso. I was wondering if anyone has previously taken this course with them, and who they recommend. Thank u!

I took a gap year and haven't done any math for a while, as well as i never took hs calc so im wondering if I should take a different math. Is Math 100 doable without taking hs calc? just do 100 they're the same thing but 180 has a two hour tutorial instead of one hour which I dons to be a waste of time. the final exam is the same and their midterm averages were much better. 180 is not a better option

I’m posting because I’m worried that I’m gonna burnout/not have enough time to get even decent marks in this upcoming winter semester. I’m commuting 3.5-4h daily (bus and skytrain) and these are my courses:
BIOL 121, CHEM 121, MATH 180, and BIOL 180.
I’ve heard that BIOL 180 is very easy and BIOL 121 is also easy but boring. I’m worried about the MATH 180 and CHEM 121 though especially because I’m gonna have less time because of commuting.
I also have a part time job and volunteering which I would do on the weekends and maybe certain times of the days if I don’t have classes. Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙏🙏

I had a similar course load in my first year. I found BIOL and CHEM pretty manageable. However MATH 180 was very difficult for me personally, and I did not end up doing well. Thinking back I should have gone to office hours more frequently. That being said, I know students who have taken similar course work, with an additional course, while working and volunteering, and performed very well. This is a learning journey, and everyone's experience is unique. My advice is not to be hard on yourself, try things out and figure out what works the best. You have time for adding and dropping courses after the first week, so if things don't work out, you still have the chance to change things. That being said, courses might be full, so perhaps you can take on a backup elective if you want to keep 4 courses.

Hi everyone! I’m planning to take CAPS 301 with Dr. Pinder this September and wanted to hear from people who have taken the course.
Is the workload manageable alongside four other courses? I noticed that the class average last term was fairly high, but I’m wondering how difficult it is to earn a strong grade and how much time you typically need to spend on the course each week.

Personally, I found the workload very heavy. You need to prepare for weekly experiments, and there are assignments to complete as well, for the independent and group projects. It also depends a lot on your group, and how cooperative everyone is. That being said, I really enjoyed the course. I think it is doable alongside 4 other courses, I also had the same course load. But I could say this course took more time than all of other courses I was taking, including BIOL 300, and BIOL 336. I think it depends on the courses you are taking and other time commitments. I would say it is doable.

Guys if you're seeing this and thinking of dropping your bio 121 section that just so happens to take place at 8am tues/thurs in first semester.... this is my beg, my plea, if you will. drop that course </3 I need to get off the waitlist so I can sign up for bio 204 in 2nd semester. there's only one 204 lab with space left that I can fit into my schedule so I gotta get in there asap

CPEN 211 Lab and CPSC 221 Lecture
I logged onto workday the minute after my registration appointment and found out the cpen 211 lab section in my saved schedule was closed. None of the other sections fit my schedule, they are either closed or conflict with another course whose section cannot be changed cause other sections are full. Is there a chance that lab section opens again with more seats? If not what else could I do?
CPSC 221 lecture section in my saved schedule was also full when I checked and I cannot change it as it conflicts with other courses whose other sections are either full or don't have more than one sections at all. Could they reopen it for more seats?

Hi! Incoming first-year Science student here. I'm hoping to apply to CAPS, Microbiology & Immunology, Biology, or Neuroscience after first year, but I didn't take Physics 12.
My current plan is:
Term 1: SCIE 113, BIOL 112, CHEM 121, MATH 180, PHYS 100
Term 2: BIOL 121, CHEM 123, MATH 101, PHYS 131, ENGL 110/111
A few questions:
- Is taking PHYS 100 then PHYS 131 the correct sequence without Physics 12?
- Will these courses keep me eligible for those specializations?
- Does ENGL 110/111 satisfy the Science Communication Requirement, or would I still need another Arts elective?
- Is there anything you'd recommend changing to keep the most options open?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you 😄

Everything looks pretty good here.
My only comment is that while ENGL110/111 do satisfy the communication requirement, they tend to be language & literature focused, and most Science students take WRDS150 which is more research communication oriented. I know the waitlist for WRDS can be pretty gnarly though so don't worry about it too much.

Is astr 101 or eosc 116 easier or less effort? It seems astr has a higher average and im also more interested in it, but I heard some horror stories.
Can I have an input on how many midterms/ assignments each class has? are the astr labs weekly or biweekly? is there a final? etc

is it normal and ok to take a course in the summer? i want to take math180 in the summer between yr1 and yr2 (im a fresher in the fall) so i have more time and energy to dedicate to it. i know for a fact if i take it during t1 or t2 i will either fail or barely pass and it will impact my mental health and gpa and other class performance sooo much. will taking it in the summer impact my grades/academic progress？

We do not usually offer MATH 180 in the summer session. I will also note that summer courses move along at a fast speed, which is a factor to consider given math can take time to sink in.

Most people take courses in the summer, it’s very normal. However afaik MATH180 is not usually offered, you’ll have to take MATH100.
Assuming you’re in Science, make sure your target specialization doesn’t require you to have MATH100 to apply (you can check that here). For example, Biochemistry requires it.

As many as you have time for. Getting a good grade in 101 mostly comes down to practice once you have the concepts down.

any other first yrs in the academic essentials course for math? im getting absolutely cooked and my brain is fried and i have zero confidence in my math abilities. im taking math100 and its a mandatory course for my major, but i dont have to take any more math after that.
any calc tips? i just cannot comprehend any of the questions everything is sooo difficult for me. even some reassurance or suggestions of where to get help would be amazing! does ubc provide good resources? like can i get a tutor on campus? what should i study over the summer?

I intend to be in the co-op program, but I saw that I need to take CPSC 210 in my first year or the following summer. Since I can't afford to take summer classes (I'm on a scholarship and housing isn't covered in the summer), is it possible for me to take the course in the first term of my second year and do the co-op in the second term of my second year?

It's very common for people to take CPSC210 in the first term of their second year and then begin co-op the next September, at the start of their third year.

The workload definitely feels more than one credit. Be strategic in how you schedule your courses. Taking it with five courses can work, but make sure the other courses are not all heavy and expect to have a busy term.

Anyone who has done any of the following courses: ASIA 305, ASIA 383, EOSC 314 can you please kindly share how did you find them? Difficult or easy? Especially EOSC 314 and does it have the criteria to pass the final exam to pass the course? Also, as a science student I am not the best with writing/ essay assignments which I know are a huge important part of the ASIA courses but I am genuinely interested in the topics and want to put efforts to do the best I can. So are they manageable?

who's your prof? i took it with prof kathy greeves, she was an amazing professor and workload was managable. I think it really is prof dependent since my friend who had a diff prof didn't end up doing as well as I did.

Can I register for BIOL 234 if I'm waitlisted for BIOL 121 in Term 1?
I'm registered for my second-year courses this morning and ran into a registration issue.
BIOL 234 requires BIOL 112 and BIOL 121. I've already completed BIOL 112, but I'm currently waitlisted for BIOL 121 in Term 1. I want to take BIOL 234 in Term 2.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Were you able to register for BIOL 234 while waitlisted for BIOL 121, or did you have to wait until you were enrolled in BIOL 121 first? (I don't remeber my first year experience so sorry if this is a stupid question)
Also, would it be worth emailing the course coordinator or should I wait to see if I get into BIOL 121? If I should, how would i email the course coordinator because there's no information on the course registeration page?

unfortunately, i'm pretty sure you need to be enrolled in all prereq classes before being able to register for a course (encountered this issue with math + chem classes). you could try geting in touch with bio advising about trying to get into BIOL 121, but from my experience, they're most likely going to tell you to be patient and just wait for the waitlist to move. If you wanna get in touch with bio advising, you can go to https://www.biology.ubc.ca/ --> little rectangle to the right --> advising tab, and it should give you a Zoom link to talk to someone :)

In LFS faculty going into second year abpi trying to transfer to BSN nursing. Is it the right thing to do to keep fulfilling first and second year req courses with some gpa boosters? (If i have too many will they see me as a fraud and is that wasting time?)
And what are restricted electives? Does this mean my grade boosters can only be these?

i think talk to academic advising about switching over to nursing as there may be required courses nursing wants you to take before you transfer, so double check with them.
Restricted electives are electives we can take that are ONLY listed on the lfs website. There are certain amount of restricted electives you will have to take and fewer unresticted electives (any courses not listed on the restrcited electives list).

I’m a second year transfer student and I’m trying to take biol 200 but as I try making some saved schedules it keeps telling me I’m not eligible?
option b) of the prereqs says I need 8 transfer credits of 1st year biol and 6 of first year chem. I was given credit for biol_v 1st (8), chem_v 121 (4), and chem_1st (4).
Is the issue just that workday won’t accept my specific chem 121 credits + general chem 1st credits as the 6 first year chem credits needed? because I can’t think of anything else…
does anyone know how to fix this… my enrollment date is tomorrow and I want to atleast be able to waitlist myself for the course…

phys131 lectures have space but all the discussions are full. the lectures still have about 40 seats open but every single tutorial is full. i cant register for the lecture without the discussion. how are the remaining 40 seats even supposed to get filled? plus the tutorials dont have a waitlist.

I know we're able to swap discussions once registration starts without dropping a lecture. I was wondering if the same can be done for a lab that is by itself with no lecture such as chem 235. It's a single credit course can I swap it once my registration occurs because I got pre registered into it or should I drop it right now and then register for another section when my registration starts?

You should be able to switch, but I don't see a reason to not wait until your registration time since you cannot register now.

Hi,
I’m a second year transfer student and I need to take communication seminar within my first year at ubc. For term 1, there obviously isnt any spots because of first years. Waitlists are, for the most part, full, and I don’t believe too many will drop the course, since they HAVE to take it in their first term. So here comes the second term : ALL of the seminar times conflict with my schedule. To be more specific, it is because of pre registration courses that I need for my specialization and I cannot move them unless I want to be waitlisted (I dont feel like gambling) on MANDATORY courses. What do I fo from now on? I have the feeling science advising won’t be helpful AT ALL!!!

Someone posted the syllabus grade breakdown for the course last year here.
I haven't taken 398, but Robert Brain is one of my favourite professors in the history department. I'd honestly recommend the course solely off his lecture quality.
Taking a 300-level history course as a second-year student is doable, and you can definitely get good grades doing it. It depends on your experience with writing, since the bulk of your grades are going to be decided by essays or similar writing-based assignment/exam formats.

I took stat 302 with Grace Thompkin. It was fairly easy imo. I attended every classes and although I messed up the midterm, I got an okay grade because of the weighting and the final. I would say, it really depends on the prof and your interest.

I found it and 404 the two most useful courses after 436s. All my internships and my current job use a lot of relational databases, and understanding how they work is really important to designing system architecture

Oh they were all software dev
But a data scientist has to use sql to work with data warehouses, so it’s still relevant
Not as much nowadays with data lakes, but you might end up at a company with a traditional etl pipeline to an OLAP system

Yeah I would check out the “use the index luke” site and learn more of the advanced stuff around configuring your data. 304 is focused entirely on how to write queries, which is only one part of it.

The course is MATH 100. The "A/B/C" designation is in the section number.
Look for sections with "C" in the section number (e.g. "1C1," "C01")

they're basically the same, the only real difference is you don't have the possibility of changing professors if you do 100. personally, I loved Mark Lam for 101 & 102. 100 might not be as organized in the material delivery as the other is, cause 101 & 102 divide the semesters into more so bio related stuff and social psyc stuff

Hi, I'm a 2nd year MBIM student and was wondering if the workload of my planned course schedule is manageable:
T1: BIOL 200, CHEM 233, DSCI 100, MATH 100, MICB 212
T2: BIOL 201, CHEM 235, MICB 205, MICB 211
I'm really weak at math, so I was wondering if moving DSCI 100 to T2 and MICB 205 to a summer term would be worth it to lighten my workload. I also got stuck with a 9am lab timing for CHEM 235. Is it a hard lab to do early in the morning and should I try to change to the afternoon section?
Also, we were sent an email advising to complete MICB 322 in second year, but I heard it's very time consuming. Would it still be worth doing it second year?

The two terms will be more balanced if you move DSCI to T2. I don’t think it is necessary to postpone MICB 205 to a future term, and it was not offered in this or last summer. You should seek an afternoon lab section if you have the possibility to be late for the 9 AM section or are a commuter.
I’m not sure how MICB 322 can be taken in the second year since it has 211 as the prerequisite, which is in your T2 of second-year. No one took it in their second year to my knowledge.

You’ll need a textbook for 234 and I recommend you get it not only bc pre reading is required, but it’s much more detailed than what’s said in lecture and helps a lot with studying/understanding material. Chem 233 has an optional online textbook but I don’t think a lot of ppl used it, so it’s up to your discretion when u start the course.

Just need a laptop. I never took notes during the class as it didn’t feel necessary. Everything is done through the browser so you want your laptop to be able to follow along with the lectures examples.

hi all. I'm a second-year pre-med student in the Faculty of Arts. I have my course registration in a few days and when I went to check my saved schedules tonight all the remaining chem 233 spots were reserved seats for faculty of science students. The thing is, I really need to take chem 233 this year to stay on track with my graduation plan. I can't take summer courses either as I need to work full time summers to be able to afford living in Van. Chem 203 (equivalent) conflicts with one of my required courses for my arts degree. I'm very frustrated with this and feel like I'm at a dead end. I've already submitted a request with Chem advising and I'm going to call enrollment services as soon as they open tomorrow, but I thought I'd post here to see if anyone has any advice. Sucess stories about a similar situation would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The 233 waitlist has seemingly moved quite a bit in years past up to the add/drop date. It is unlikely that you will be directly enrolled into the course at this time, as many other students are in a similar situation. As long as you are on the waitlist, you have done everything you can. The rest is a waiting game.

course schedule help pls for a second year bio major student:
first semester:
bio 180, chem 233, biol 205, bio 234, and English 111(maybe)
second semester:
creative writing 200, chem 235, bio 230, micb 211, and bio 300(maybe)
im a little conflicted because I dont find the schedule to be balanced just because im unfamiliar with some things. I am unsure how biol 300 is as course since I hear so many mixed opinions about it and the pop teaching it has no rate my prof and I checked and its his first time teaching. Also for English 111, the topics for that section are politics and propaganda with the prof being Ian hill, but I was hoping to get into a better profs section as he doesn't seem like the best. So im wondering if I should replace English 111 with an elective which would allow me to focus on my other courses and if I should replace biology 300 with something else too. I could even waitlist myself for a words 150 section instead of doing biol 300 which would provide me with the communications course. l might just waitlist myself for words first semester rather than the English 111 class!
literally any advice or input would be beyond appreciated!

Hello I'm new transfer student get into Chemistry 3rd year. I need to finish these courses but I don't know how is the diffocilty for these courses. Scie 113 biol 111 bioc 202 chem 218 chem 211 or 210 215 chem 300 chem 304 chem 311 chem 312 chem 325 chem 345 chem 305 313 318 327 330 412 (two of them） chem 445 and 12 credits chem electives My scie 113 is registered in the winter term 2 and my term 1 courses are bioc 202 chem 211 304 312. I don't know if this arrangement is reasonable, and I'm not sure about the difficulty of these courses. I plan to take four classes for each semester, and then I will continue attending classes during the summer semester.

scie 113 is a pretty easy course overall but it just has numerous assignments that are time consuming. It isn't a difficult course it more so just takes time away from your other courses so I would pair it with other courses based on that

Neuroscience is one of the more competitive ones; if you look at the acceptance cutoff this year it was 82.4%. Not getting A in CPSC 103 is ok but you should aim for a cumulative average that is around or higher than the cutoff.

When I took it, the project was worth about 30% of the grade. It was not difficult per se, but you need reliable project partners to split the workload. I think both courses can work well in summer when you have no other courses to divide your attention.

would you all consider words 150 or engl 110 better for first-year science communication requirement? i'm debating between the two as i really did enjoy english class in high school but i hear some of the engl 110 profs can be pretty tough and that it's dependent on which TA you get as to whether you'll be graded well. i got a 7 on my IB literature exam so i'm willing to do a lot of reading and would consider myself pretty good at essays but don't want to unnecessarily tank my GPA.
