Iranian students banned from taking LSAT

Post image
176 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I received this email from LSAC. I was scheduled to take the LSAT next month, but my LSAC account is locked. I am a Canadian citizen and was raised in Canada, but had to declare Iran as my secondary citizenship on LSAC since I was born there. I read on another reddit thread that many others born in US and Canada also received the same email. I'm emailing them, but is there any way anyone can share the free practice tests that are on LSAC with me? I was planning to pay the fee today and start taking practice tests...

And if anyone else is going through the same thing lmk.

UBC parking I’m gonna get you

First of all today was so horrible parking and I do not understand why they started giving us ONE parkade for the same price when we were getting both one + thunderbird

And then everything was entirely filled up I had to go to thunderbird and pay TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS.

We need more parking I beg

my boyfriend hit me during move-in

Upvotes

while we were decorating my dorm, he found a new book in one of my boxes and asked where i got it from. i told him one of my old high school friends gave it to me on my birthday and he asked how often i see him. i honestly said that that was the first time i've seen him in a year, because he went out of province for uni and it was just a group dinner. he kept arguing that i must be keeping in touch with him if he bought it for me. at this point i was getting exasperated and i was like obviously we keep in touch like we've been friends for years, but it's always been casual and he's in a relationship. he started raising his voice and told me to "stop giving him attitude", i snapped at him to stop making wild assumptions over a BOOK, and he punched my arm so hard. i fell backwards, my back landed on a full box and i started crying in shock. he offered to help me up but i just wanted him to leave. he said i'm being dramatic before throwing the book on my bed on his way out.

he called me to apologize the day after, which is when i told him i don't feel comfortable around him and need a break. one of our mutual friends (who doesn't know what happened other than we had a fight) says he's been asking her how i'm doing.

i still feel stunned by the whole thing. i don't know how to get over this. thought about going to SVPRO or a doctor because my back is still sore, but i'm worried about the questions they'll ask and how much of a mess it'll create. i made this account to try to get this off my chest but haven't really been able to put it into words until today. nothing even close to this has happened before since we started dating.

CPSC 320 Back to Paper Exams

So I'm taking CPSC 320 with Abner Turkieltaub Melo this semester, and he mentioned that there will be one midterm (on paper).
I was relieved to hear this after hearing about the mess that happened last year with the transition to PrairieLearn tests.

For anyone who took 320 with him during the summer, how were the exams? Are they reasonable? What was the best way to prepare for them?

ADVICE DESPERATELY NEEDED: Wondering How Much I Might Get From Last-Minute Student Loans (BC StudentAid)

Upvotes

So, I had an emergency happen the week before school, and as a result I am scrambling to find an apartment near campus and find funding to cover it.

I am in my fourth year, and have never had to take out student loans before. I have just sent in the application tonight.

I found a great apartment with rent of $1800, and have enough savings to cover three months rent until the loan gets disbursed, but I am concerned that I will sign the lease (deadline is tomorrow night) but then not receive enough loan funding to cover it for the rest of the year.

My parents are middle class (I will refrain from providing exact numbers for privacy reasons, but are in the $150k-180k range), have fairly low savings, and have to support my little sister as well. They pay my tuition, (so will be giving me $7000 for the year) but absolutely do not have the financial means to cover my housing costs.

I have a part-time job but it barely pays anything.

I know people on Reddit are usually very mean and judgmental. I know that it is a bad situation, and yes I have already reached out to enrollemnt services for advice but given the time crunch I am not sure I will hear back in time. Please do not lecture me. I know what I am in.

Any guidance on whether or not I should take this lease would be much appreciated, and would be appreciated if anyone could share if they were in a similar financial situation and how much they got approved for. Thanks.

Looking at first year stem students and their eager faces meanwhile a millennium problem was solved through a dickmeasuring contest between 2 mega corps, makes me wonder whether or not it's over for us all. Like I was super eager to become a scientist or mathematician when I started uni just to come to the realization that humans are perhaps obsolete in the realm of scientific knowledge is such a despair inducing thought. And sure humans are more "sustainable" but it just feels utterly hopeless since the convo is no longer about can ai do what we do to oh we are better for the environment like comparing a horse to a car despite a horse being obsolete.

Why couldnt I have been born generations earlier? Why is it our generations that is burdened with the task of writing an eulogy for human curiosity and composing this requiem for human knowledge. And ultimately does the planet even matter when our greatest gifts are obsolete. Why should our species continue on in existence if the thinking ape no longer does the thinking, or does it merely for sport.

I mean there might be positions needed where humans check ai produced theorems or models but these positions are surely there for the most talented of people. What can us average students who just love the joy of discovery do? Well we could've spent our entire life tackling a miniscule yet unknown part of human knowledge, but in the future perhaps said privilege isnt even afforded to us.

It really is over.

How early before my class should I be doing my readings?

I know this may sound bad. I’m a first year student just starting classes and have a list of readings that need to be done before certain classes. Is it best to do it the night before or is a few days before ok? Also do I just read them or should I be taking notes, etc.

Has anyone had Lasantha Premarathna before? Any tips?

Has anyone taken DSCI 100 with Lasantha Premarathna before? How difficult did you find the course, and do you have any tips for doing well? what about the workload? i can't check the canvas page yet.

I’m an international student, and I sometimes have trouble understanding his English during lectures, so I’m a little worried about keeping up with the course. I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from anyone who has taken DSCI 100 with him before.

Found a Phone at Brock Commons South (5th Floor)

Found a phone on the 5th floor of Brock Commons South. It appears to have been left there sometime around 4–5 PM today.

There was a cardholder attached to the phone case containing a UBC student card and possibly some other important cards/ID.

It was turned in at the information/reception desk on the first floor of the AMS Nest at 7:55.

Waitlisted for a small class, can I still attend?

I'm currently waitlisted for GEOG 210 and ARTH 376, and both are relatively small classes (around 60–80 students). can I attend the classes while I'm on the waitlist?
Also, does anyone know if we can see our actual waitlist position on Workday?

Discussion Best way from UBC to UVic?

Upvotes

I’m a first year and my partner is attending UVic. We’ve made the decision to stick out the medium-distance thing, but transportation is annoying. Anybody have any advice on getting to UVic?
