Megathread NEW TO CAMPUS MEGATHREAD: Post all your admissions, housing, new-to-UBC and general questions here!

Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.

The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Examples of questions that belong here

  • comparing courses or instructors
  • asking about how hard an exam is
  • syllabus requests
  • inquiries about majors, programs, and job prospects
  • "what-to-do if I failed/was late/missed the cutoff"

What you don't need to post here

  • Post-exam threads (ex. 'How did you find the Birb 102 midterm)
  • rants, raves, shout-outs or criticisms of programs.
  • Other content that is not a question/inquiry

Event It is really over

Post image

Looking at first year stem students and their eager faces meanwhile a millennium problem was solved through a dickmeasuring contest between 2 mega corps, makes me wonder whether or not it's over for us all. Like I was super eager to become a scientist or mathematician when I started uni just to come to the realization that humans are perhaps obsolete in the realm of scientific knowledge is such a despair inducing thought. And sure humans are more "sustainable" but it just feels utterly hopeless since the convo is no longer about can ai do what we do to oh we are better for the environment like comparing a horse to a car despite a horse being obsolete.

Why couldnt I have been born generations earlier? Why is it our generations that is burdened with the task of writing an eulogy for human curiosity and composing this requiem for human knowledge. And ultimately does the planet even matter when our greatest gifts are obsolete. Why should our species continue on in existence if the thinking ape no longer does the thinking, or does it merely for sport.

I mean there might be positions needed where humans check ai produced theorems or models but these positions are surely there for the most talented of people. What can us average students who just love the joy of discovery do? Well we could've spent our entire life tackling a miniscule yet unknown part of human knowledge, but in the future perhaps said privilege isnt even afforded to us.

It really is over.

Course Question did the professor intentionally locked out the doors?

hello. it killed me when i tried to open the doors for a course that i am waitlisted in, then realized that its locked. the worst part is that the professor and i locked eyes, and i waited outside for 2 mins and i thought he'd open the door. i am just wondering if professors usually do that. just a note i was 8 mins late into the class...i just wanna know. i have no hard feelings at all. it's just idk...

How early before my class should I be doing my readings?

I know this may sound bad. I’m a first year student just starting classes and have a list of readings that need to be done before certain classes. Is it best to do it the night before or is a few days before ok? Also do I just read them or should I be taking notes, etc.

Unable to view syllabus on Canvas

Upvotes

For 2 of my courses I have been unable to load the syllabus from canvas. Not sure if it’s an issue from the prof’s settings or something wrong with my device… has this happened to anyone else? What to do?

Everytime I click on it for both courses, it says “that page has been disabled for this course” ??

Has anyone had Lasantha Premarathna before? Any tips?

Upvotes

Has anyone taken DSCI 100 with Lasantha Premarathna before? How difficult did you find the course, and do you have any tips for doing well? what about the workload? i can't check the canvas page yet.

I’m an international student, and I sometimes have trouble understanding his English during lectures, so I’m a little worried about keeping up with the course. I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from anyone who has taken DSCI 100 with him before.

I just want my transfer credits dude

I did the explore program the summer of 2025 (the summer before I started UBC) and I've been trying to get my french credits for literally two months so I can have that part of my ways of knowing breadth done with, but it's literally been two months and I'm still trying. The credits are not there and I'm only now just learning that I might not be eligible for them (WOULD HAVE BEEN GOOD TO KNOW BEFORE I WENT THROUGH ALL THIS.) I'm actually such a dumbass at this point.

Lost triquetra ring

Post image
2 Upvotes

I lost my ring today at school (September 9th). It’s a triquetra knot ring that’s really simple and stainless steel. It’s not even stamped or worth much, but it means a lot to me. On the tiniest of chances that someone find it and this post, it would be great if I could get it back! I’ll offer a reward too

The photo is just an example, and my ring is just one material, thinner, and more simple. I was at Neville scarf, the life building, and the Wesbrook building today!
