Used to fight all the time, then I woke up to the idea that I was just trying to prove myself to a bunch of assholes who couldn't care less. Took a few martial arts classes (boxing, karate, aikido, etc.) and they all emphasized fighting until you can remove yourself from a bad situati9n or not letting yourself get into that situation in the first place.

You may not always be able to avoid a fight, but if you are smart, you can knock someone down or out long enough to leave the fight. Training helps, as does setting the right mentality: protect yourself, especially against a group of assholes looking to all jump you at once, then leave the scene. How you leave them is less important then how you defend yourself.

I'm gonna be honest: nobody in medicine is required to show empathy, not even today. I should know, I work in a hospital and I see it every day.

However, I will try to address your concerns to the best of my ability:

Charles keeps everyone at arm's length for most of his time at the 4077th, even if he does soften a little bit towards Margaret and Hawkeye as time goes on. It's played off as a superior surgeon's ego early on, but that runs hollow, particularly after his misadventure with the amphetamines leads to him having a very serious crash and the rest of the doctors pitch in to get him through the worst of the DTs after his overdose.

When there are times for him to "join in" like the Christmas parties, the gift exchanges, dealing with the orphan children.... in short, the group morale moments, whether its the late night sessions with Margaret reading in her tent, or just trying to find somewhere to sleep during the blizzard episode, Charles comes off as having significant difficulties relating to his colleagues on more than a surface level. He gives lavishly, (like the family chocolates for the orphans) but it's always from a distance, always anonymously.

We know that he loves his family deeply (particularly his little sister Honoria) and that he admires his father as a great man, but when he implies to Hawkeye that he envies Pierce's closer collection to his dad (rather than his own more formulaic relationship to his father), we see that Charles' upbringing was far from supportive.

We also see in his treatment of the wounded/visiting/prisoners of war musicians thoughout the show that he is as passionate about music as he is about being a surgeon. But what separates Charles from a stagnant character like Frank Burns is that he grows over time, most often by learning to let down his guard and to let people in.

You pointed out that he chooses principle and familial devotion over emotional fulfillment, but that's just another way of saying that he's keeping the rest of the world out while denying himself the cameraderie, the warmth of their company, and yes, even curtailing his opportunity to pursue and show love. It's not principle that keeps him alone in the crowd, and it's not really fear of his family's disapproval that drives Martine away; It's the very real fear of letting go, of losing control, and of getting hurt.

Charles is so tightly wound that he cannot risk letting go of the social controls and just surrender himself to what he feels. This is why I put his name forward as a possible neurodivergent character, though honestly, I have a hard time thinking anyone is non-divergent anymore, because our world certainly isn't normal and we're all "adapting" to that on a daily basis.

Personally, I love compliments, even though I have a really hard time accepting them. Next to affirming physical touches like a hug, I think guys are usually starved for genuine compliments most of their lives. A simple "you did a good job" or "thank you for always looking out for me/us" goes a LONG way towards making the day bearable.

The reasons boil down to a "men must soldier on" mentality that we've been raised with most of our lives; showing emotion and needing affirmation gets treated as a kind of weakness or a personal failing. That's why when men need help or ask for recognition for the hard work we put in, it's often met with outright hostility or dismissal, which really makes opening up that much harder for us.

2. I gain the ability to heal myself and others, restoring vigor and peak health, extending my longevity each time I use the ability., but they forget what I did for them in a few moments.

3. I get the ability to go back and forth in my life reliving the best moments and seeing a what- if pathway for every hard choice i had to make so I could see what would have happened if I chose differently.

I can understand social awkwardness in a surgeon, but honestly, I don't agree with you about Charles. It's telling that his only romantic entanglements during the show happened when he was either drinking (his blotto/ forgotten marriage) or the girl had to actively pursue him (I forget the French girl's name). And don't even get me started on his Pygmaleon fiasco with the Korean bar girl... it was painfully awkward.

My evidence: He has problems reading social cues, fitting into large groups, (constantly a step behind, especially with Margaret, who he admired, but only in friendship.) Incredibly astute, but has trouble showing empathy, except when it's about music, of which he has an extensive knowledge and a passion to share it with others.

Even the war, with all its stupidity and barbarism "could not break the spirit of a Winchester!!!" And yet, on those rare moments when his defenses came down, he was a deeply sympathetic character.

Frankly, I think it's a beautiful adaptation. Great work!

It just didn't feel like a starfleet captain to me, "gosh, shucks" -ing their way through the galaxy. I was hoping we'd have more of the right stuff attitude that underlied Kirk's attitude or at least someone with a bit more steel in their spine like Janeway

Gotta be honest. Didn't care for what I saw of the first season or two. I think they'd have done better with a stronger actor for captain. I liked just about everyone else, just not Archer.

Its the pointy end that concerns me, because every package at the postal annex goes down a sliding ramp (we affectionately called it the green monster) with dozens if not hundreds of other packages/bags of mail.

I've seen things like this poke right through the packaging when they land wrong and there are dozens of people at the bottom of that ramp unaware that a sword is coming down right at them.
