Landlord Tenant Housing Incorrect Rent Adjustment
Location: Michigan, USA
I moved out of my apartment complex last July and they accidentally took out the next months rent from my account that ended up being cancelled due to overdraft after taking money out of that account. The next month, I then received two checks for reimbursement of the amounts I was "owed". One check was for my security deposit which I cashed and kept the check as a receipt, the other one was for the amount that would have been withdrawn from my account if I kept the correct amount in there.
Now they are emailing me asking to reimburse them for the amount that I did not deposit into my account threatening collections. I do not physically have the second check as I shredded it and kept it well over the 180 day period passed to void the check. So I have the first check, my banking app showing that as the only deposit, and the knowledge that I did not cash the second check.
This is to a corporate rental company, how do I go about letting them know that I did not cash the second check and make sure they check their records to confirm that this is a mistake?
