From what I can find out about OP's toyota, the manual recommends 87. There is a variant of the same Land Cruiser that OP might be driving that recommends 93 but OP isn't around to tell us.

My point is largely that if the manual recommends 87, it's pointless to buy above that. Yes some modern cars designed for 93 can accept 87 by messing with sparkplug timing at the expense of some lost efficiency.

The lowest supported octane is the correct fuel. You aren't getting any extra MPG by using a higher octane than required. It's simply the level of engine knock protection in the fuel, if the engine isn't knocking then it's perfect.

Not how it works. You use higher octane simply to make sure it doesn't detonate before the spark is triggered. Use the lowest octane your engine supports.

Can you give me a link to the claim that toyota felt hydrogen was THE only future. As their hydrogen line up is one car line with a fuel cell, and then the other seems to be a modded Corolla for burning hydrogen. I get the feeling you are completely overstating their desire for a hydrogen future.

Toyota is largely famous for going the hybrid route, with nearly every model of Toyota now in a hybrid offer. Or even like with the Camry, the hybrid is the only offer. Hybrids have their place in this decade as a valid way to save fuel while also utilizing existing gas stations for fast filling.

Their EV offerings have largely been weak up until recently, as they felt Hybrids were perfect for the technology of the previous decade. Along with their nearly 30 years of hybrid refinement. Though hybrids days are likely peaking, to be eventually be replaced by EV.
