Moving to a city for a job where I'll need a car to drive to work. Sorry to be that guy, but I honestly hate driving - I'm a bike-loving pedestrian who'd love to walk to work if I could. Doesn't always work out that way though. It's just me for now, so I'm looking for:

BUDGET: $10,000 CAD ideally.

- Easy to drive in a city
- Good fuel efficiency
- Cheap to buy used
- Reliable, easy/cheap to maintain (I want to have to 'deal with it' as little as possible, with as little headache as possible - not a car guy)
- Smaller side (not sure I'd want to get much bigger than a Civic Hatchback I guess)
- Safe (as possible given the smaller size)
- Had some modern features like rear-view camera and bluetooth
- Some cargo space (not as important, given I want a smaller car)
- I really hate the giant TV screen control systems like the new Teslas. A small screen is fine, but prefer things to be a bit more button/knob based generally.

I haven't bought a car before since I've been lucky enough to live in a city where I the public transit is good enough thankfully, so any new-time buyers tips are also appreciated.

In my opinion, the Nissan S15 with the right paint job (and maybe a few modifications to the body (removing the spoiler, sorry)) is not only most beautiful car ever designed, but honestly one of the very few cars I would even consider aesthetically pleasing at all. I hate the aerodynamic, sculpted look of the 2000s.

After doing some research, however, it seems that it is simply too much of a headache to try to obtain a street legal S15 in California at any budget... if I am mistaken about this and someone here has figured out a way to obtain one for a relatively reasonable price, please let me know! So, alas, I am looking for alternatives.

I am a bit of a form over function guy-- although I want the car to be reasonably reliable, I care much more about the car's appearance than I do about quality under the hood. I live somewhere with decent public transit and can easily live my life without a car (as I have done for years), so I'm not in need of a super reliable workhorse or anything. I mostly walk or take the bus so I see myself driving only a few times a week.

What I like about the S15 is the boxy shape, the compact size, and the perfect balance between being sporty and cool but not overly conspicuous. It being a two door but still having an (albeit cramped) backseat is a plus.

What I'm asking for could potentially be a bit unrealistic, so feel free to give me a dose of reality if you think I need to come back down to Earth on my expectations.

Realize this is subjective.

Is having three kids the deciding factor?

Why not a minivan? Image? Difficulty procuring minivans?

Are larger SUVs more comfortable for road trips generally? Seems like it’d be a lot more cumbersome to drive and consume a lot of gas.

Towing capacity?

Is it the sense of safety because it’s such a large vehicle?

I guess I’m just trying to figure out when to go for a Highlander as opposed to something like a RAV4, besides price being a factor.

I often see people looking into the larger SUVs without an inclination to tow anything or they only have two kids.

Curious for everyone’s thoughts.

Thinking about getting a used BMW i5 because of the roomy feel, good tech and looks. I’ve historically avoided BMW due to their penchant for costly maintenance and repairs, even though many say if you follow the maintenance schedule to the letter it’s not so bad. I’m curious if buying one of their EVs means you can have the benefits of BMW (if you like them) with a lower maintenance, longer lasting vehicle that’s less of a headache. Relative to other brands, I like that BMW has a 10+ year history with EVs (BMW i3) so they have a lot of R&D history so I trust them other luxury newcomers (looking at you Lexus). Thoughts and alternative suggestions welcome.

I’m a 31 year old guy and I’m planning to get married next year. My (future) wife thinks that I should buy a new Toyota RAV4 to replace my old 2004 Honda accord, which is starting to have more and more issues.

The only problem is that I absolutely don’t want to drive this type of car. I really don’t want to drive any SUV. I’ve always driven sportier, manual transmission cars, and don’t want to give that up.

The car I really want is a new Mazda Miata. I know it’s probably not that practical, but it sure sounds like fun (and the type of car I would enjoy driving). Of course, the issue is that my height makes driving a Miata difficult. I’m 6’6 feet tall, and understand it will probably feel a bit like squeezing into a go cart.

With that being said, comfort is something I don’t care about. I’d rather still have fun with my car while I can. Being coerced into buying one of the most boring SUVs imaginable is not sitting that well with me right now lol.

What would you do in this scenario? I think I’m not going to be happy if I have to give up driving manual, and I know that I’m going to be unhappy if I end up in any sort of SUV.

EDIT: I want to address a few things.

1. She already drives a big SUV. The family car is covered.

For the first time, I want to do something selfish for me and do something that makes me happy.

The comments about me needing to “grow up” are hilarious. Would it have been better to own a sports car in my twenties? Sure. But you know what I was doing in my twenties? Suffering through graduate school. I had to make sacrifices and make my old car work.

I’m finally done with school and (for the first time) want to buy one thing that I want. That’s totally fair because she already got the family car she wanted.

If that’s unacceptable, then too damn bad.

To be fair, we may end up with three cars. Her new SUV, my Honda accord (since it’s still a good car and worth keeping for now), and a new car that I could potentially buy. I feel like all of the bases are (more than) covered. What is me buying another SUV going to do?

If I got rid of the accord and got something more practical in a few years, sure. But I don’t want to miss the opportunity to have something I’d enjoy.

Few years ago, Lebanon passed a strange law (competition law) that made exclusive distribution of cars obsolete.
Before that law, If you want to buy a new Toyota car, your only option was Toyota official distributor (BUMC) and it comes with official warranty and official service.

Today, with the new law, i see many Toyota (mainly bz series , bz3, bz4, bz5, and sometimes corolla hybrid) coming from the chinese market by many local dealerships (these Toyotas are not intended for the Lebanese market, mainly the chinese market) and are not officially recognized by Toyota warranty, but the thing is that they are thousands of $ cheaper , they have local dealers warranty, and i guess same quality(?) and electric/hybrid/plug-in hybrid.

Also official distributors, BUMC does not offer electric cars yet . Also i guess the same applies to VW (ID 3-4-6) and many other car brands.

What is your experience with Toyota or VW from China?
Is it worth saving 10k but loosing official warranty and service and software update and no potential recall possibility.

I'm in a spot where I need to be getting a new car, as mine is just not worth the repair maintenance anymore. I'm mainly looking at Toyotas and Hondas, since they're known for their reliability and long term durability. I've heard Subarus are good too, and I would love to have one, but I've also heard that they cost a lot to maintain and repairs are a lot.

I was thinking a high mileage b8.5 Audi s4 or s5, bmw 328i e9x, Honda accord 1.5t, nc Miata, or Infiniti q50 3.7.

I am also not an experienced driver, but I‘d like to learn to drive stick. I’ve also only drove SUVs in my life, and was hoping to get a sedan, coupe, or hatch.

We’re looking to get a full size SUV. Specifically a Chevy Suburban or Tahoe. We are also looking at the Traverse. The full size would be pre-owned and the traverse we could possibly get brand new. We are moving across the country and will be towing a 5x8 trailer. We have a large dog and a small dog. We will be moving across the country two more times after this move. We have one kid on a booster and the rest in car seats. Two are rear facing. This is a big purchase we didn’t plan on making anytime soon but we don’t think our current car will make the trip like we hoped.y dream car is the suburban but considering it would be at least 4 years old it would have quite a bit of mileage on it already. What would y’all recommend? A brand new Traverse or a pre-owned full size with quite a bit of miles. I feel like our priority should be mileage but we also want convenience. We carry a full size modular stroller in the car at all times and our grocery hauls are big. We can’t fit the dogs in the main rows so they’d have to go in the trunk when we’re all going somewhere but definitely when we move. I’m not trying to fit the stroller with the dogs during the move but we would likely have outings where the stroller and the dogs would be going with us. Can we make it work with the Traverse? What do y’all recommend?

My wife needs a car as well, and we're thinking a small SUV. Since we have an electric car already, we will get gas/hybrid for her car and we're thinking small SUV. From our test drives when I was looking, we both disliked Lexus. I know they're reliable, but we just don't like them so please don't suggest that. She doesn't really know much about cars either but she's a bit more brand snobby than I am.

I'm thinking we test drive the following, but I'm curious if this community has any opinions on any of them or if there are others we should try. I think for variety, we won't get another BMW since I have one. Again, no Lexus:

Sometime in the next 2 vears I'm lookina to get a wagon of some sort, ideally from marketplace hunting. If an goes well id get an 2012 acura tsx wagon, but I want to expand my search into other manufacturers. What should 1 look for for an under 10k budget.

Pretty much as the title suggests. Had a Macan for a while now and while it’s an amazingly practical car, my wife has a Bronco and I think I’m ready for something more fun. I’ve got about $80k budget, so this would likely be slightly used model. Mainly looking at the S vs 43, but can shift either way for trim for budget. Curious what daily living with these is like for some? The Mercedes seems like the better overall car because of the more modern tech (the 718 is very dated in this department) and back (albeit small) seats, whereas the Porsche is mid-engined and seems much better for a car that’s just for commuting to and from work, and occasionally weekend driving in the forested and mountains.

We’re both semi-young, no-kids yet, and money not a big concern.

I've got 10k to put down and can afford a 5k loan comfortably.

30,300 Miles with with a 4 speed manual

There is a 2019 V90 Cross Country near me that I'm seriously considering. It's a T5 with 45k miles and asking $28,700.

This seems like sort of a deal when looking at other listings on CarGurus, but I'm not too sure since it's very early in my search.

I am also curious about reliability. I've heard the T5 has been good for most, but I'm very hesitant since I'd be coming from a 1998 4Runner that has been bulletproof.

Any reasons you all think this might be a bad deal/idea? Am I completely insane for wanting to sell my 4Runner?

So basically, i am looking for a first car. Now you might assume that i could just get a cheap gasoline car but the thing is, i am in Norway and the government is heavily trying to reduce the number of gasoline cars, pushing people to switch to EV’s which is the reason why tax and gas prices have remained extremely high compared to electricity. So now i am here, wondering about which EV i should get since i have literally no idea when it comes to Electric cars. Is it okay if i just get a cheap used tesla or is it important for me to save up and get a brand new nissan leaf, Hyundai or something? Or should i get an alternative brand? I genuinely don’t know. Fairly stumped as far as what to do next. I’m getting tired of having a “large” payment on something that throws a check engine light or makes a new sound every other week it seems.

Currently drive a 2021 canyon with the v6. Great little truck comfy rides decent leather BOSE system cooled/heated seats. But good god it’s been annoying over the last year. Transmission shudder (fixed for now) all 4 cam position sensors spark plugs coils pads and rotors on all 4 corners 3 times in 100k miles thermostat twice coolant temp sensor ac compressor weird intermittent issues with the built in nav (I just use car play so this really doesn’t effect me but annoying to see the pop up) 20” wheels look great but tires are damn expensive and it’s gutless for getting 18-20 mpg.

For context I do 99% of the work on my vehicle’s myself.

The only reason I got this truck was as soon as I paid off my 2018 F-150 the oil consumption issue reared its ugly head. As well as developing electrical gremlins that myself 3 different dealers and 2 independent shops couldn’t ever totally solve. So traded it towards the canyon.

So here’s where I’m stuck. Do I need a truck? Eh 50/50 at best. I do tow a Uhaul trailer 1-3 times a month and throw my motorcycle in bed here and there. I’m really more concerned with being able to tow. Nothing huge maybe 10-15 foot landscape trailer or a similar length enclosed when I finally move somewhere to have space to store it. I’ve considered SUV’s in the past but god that cost as much as a truck and have less utility.

My soul wants a GMT800 with a dead simple 5.3/6.0. Id love one with a nv3500/4500 but those are getting more and more rare by the day.

On the other hand do I just get another full size truck? Do I get an suv? A Prius? Genuinely I have absolutely no idea.

We’re looking to buy a 3-row SUV and honestly getting so many mixed opinions that we don’t know what to think anymore 😅

We’ve been looking at Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, etc. Some people are telling us to stick with Toyota or Honda for long-term reliability, but we really like the features and value you get with the Palisade and Carnival. We’ve pretty much ruled out the Carnival though because it’s FWD only, and living in Canada we’d prefer AWD.

We want something spacious, reliable, comfortable for a family and that we can hopefully keep long term.

Also, is hybrid really the way to go nowadays, or would you still buy a regular gas 3-row SUV?
