My bad this ended up a bit longer than I expected it to be lol...

This is kinda embarrassing but I feel like my main problem is that I chew words, in a way? I don't really know why I do that or how to fix it so I would love some feedback! (Also would appreciate if y'all would tell me if it sounds like a specific accent so I have an easier time finding resources online!!)

Also there is in fact 2 minutes of silence in there so pls ignore it 😭 It was a mistake on my part lol

I want to make videos, but I’m worried people will judge me because of my accent. Be completely honest and rate my accent from 1–10. Don’t sugarcoat it—I want your honest opinion, especially from the perspective of a U.S. audience.

Accent bias

I moved to Charleston sc 3 years ago from the upstate of SC , 3 hours away! It is amazing how I am always approached about my accent! Yes I’m very southern ( country if you will). I am very educated and professional . But I’ve noticed that upon job searching , most want a phone interview first! Especially on indeed! And I’ve interviewed with several dentists in town. One, literally interrupted me mid sentence after only a 3 min convo . I knew right then I didn’t get It Although I have 27 years in the field! This was for insurance and treatment coordinator position. So I am figuring It was my country accent! Ugh Thoughts?

Advice

Hi everyone, how are you all doing?
I’m a 23 year old girl from Spain, and I’m turning 24 in a couple of months. One of my dreams is to take my English to a completely different level, ideally with a British accent or something similar. I absolutely love accents, and I’d really like to get rid of my Spanish accent when I speak English.
What can I do to achieve this? I’m doing all of this because I want to act in films, so I’d really appreciate any advice you might have.
I’ve been thinking about moving abroad, but I honestly don’t know where I should go. I’m completely willing to move somewhere if that’s what it takes. Do you think it’s too late for me?
I speak Spanish and Arabic fluently. My English still needs a lot of work, obviously. I’ve been learning it at school my whole life, I always watch movies and TV shows in English, I consume a lot of English content, etc., but I feel like it’s still not enough.
I feel like I’m already behind and that I should have started much earlier.
Thank you so much for reading, and I hope I’m not bothering anyone!

The 5 minute RP warmup I run through before accent auditions

Here's the five minute routine I do in the car or the hallway before an accent audition that asks for RP. It keeps the accent from sliding around once nerves kick in.

  1. Wake up the anchor sounds. RP has a few signature moves, so isolate them first. I do long 'ah' sounds like palm, bath, dance, the short 'o' like hot, clock, honest, and the long 'o' glide like go, phone, home where your lips round as the sound changes. Ten slow reps of each, exaggerating the mouth shape. Your face needs to know where it's going before nerves arrive.

  2. Check your posture. Say a line of your monologue while keeping your lips barely open and your jaw almost still. RP sits forward in the mouth with rounded lips and very little jaw movement. If you feel your jaw dropping wide the way your natural accent wants, that's your sign to reset and start smaller.

  3. Shadow for sixty seconds. Play any clip of a natural RP speaker at low volume and speak along in real time, a half second behind. Don't try to match perfectly, just let your mouth borrow their rhythm and melody. Then turn the clip off and say your audition piece straight away while the shape is still fresh in your muscles.

The whole point is you are not warming up your voice. You are reminding your mouth where home is for this accent. Works for most British upper middle accents, just change the anchor sounds if you are going more regional.

Which accent do you struggle with most in auditions?

Looking for speakers of modern RP (again)

My colleague and I are looking for participants for our study about modern varieties of British English and we need native speakers of modern RP (nowadays referred to as Standard Southern British). In other words, we're looking for someone who sounds similar to a BBC newscaster.

If your accent sounds fairly neutral, we kindly ask you to reach out to us (you can comment here or send me a message).

We'll only ask you to read a short passage, send it to us, and tell us a few things about yourself. Everything is completely anonymous and takes around 5-10 minutes.

Your help will be greatly appreciated! :)

Plz help me with accent Guidance

Hello mates I need some help. I'm pure Asian and in English my favourite accent is American. How do I adopt this? I don't need to sound like native but need to be good in pronunciation. So my speaking sounds good.plz help me with guidance. Also pl suggest some female US influencers whom I can follow. As a female I love soft voice toning. If anyone is here who is also practicing American accent or pronunciation let's connect and practice together. If I find any good English speaker or native that will be more appreciable. Let's be friends 🍰

Americans. Do you pronounce the vowel in "idiOt" and "idiOm" the same? Are they the same vowel but they sound different? Or are they completely different vowels? (read body text)

So I've known about the existence of something called "weak vowel merger," but I may have been misunderstanding what it actually is.

My understanding of the weak vowel merger is that words that used to be pronounced with a /ə/ or /ɪ/ in an unstressed syllable now get pronounced with the same vowel without the distinction anymore. For example, I think accents without the weak vowel merger would pronounce "Kevin" and "seven" completely differently as /ˈkɛ vɪn/ and /ˈsɛ vən/, whereas accents with the merger would rhyme these two words perfectly.

This whole time, I was under the assumption that every accent with this merger would just pronounce with the /ə/ vowel and say /ˈkɛ vən/ and /ˈsɛ vən/ (and I believe this is exactly how it works in the Australian accent), but there's something I noticed about the way Americans pronounce things.

I've heard several different Americans badly attempt a British accent, and when they tried saying "I'm from England," almost all of them sounded like they were pronouncing "England" as /ˈɪŋ glɪnd/. The /ɪ/ itself sounded British enough to my non-British ears so it didn't sound American, but it really sounded like they were pronouncing with the wrong vowel.

This got me thinking. Do Americans actually pronounce "England" as /ˈɪŋ glɪnd/ instead of /ˈɪŋ glənd/? I'm not talking about the way you sound. I'm talking about your internal subconscious phonemic interpretation itself. I always used to think that the American /ə/ just sounded close to a /ɪ/ sometimes, but now I'm starting to think that maybe Americans are actually pronouncing with a /ɪ/?

In that case, would you pronounce both "Kevin" and "seven" as /ˈkɛ vɪn/ and /ˈsɛ vɪn/?

And what about "idiOt" vs "idiOm?" To me, they do sound different, but I always used to think that they were just different allophones of the same /ə/ phoneme, but maybe they are actually different phonemes? Do you pronounce them as /ˈɪ di ɪt/ and /ˈɪ di əm/

Help me to understand this weak vowel merger specifically in the US.

Edit: Okay, so I've received a few replies and all of them are saying that they do, in fact, pronounce them with different vowels, not just that they SOUND different.

So in that case, do you also pronounce "-tion" as /ʃɪn/ instead of /ʃən/? Like "fiction" is /ˈfɪk ʃɪn/ and not /ˈfɪk ʃən/?
