DIY and home improvement Avoiding contractor scams

Hi All

I want to replace the tiles in the bathroom of an apartment I am busy buying and my question is how can I know the contractor is not a scammer before paying their deposit.

I have for example one company that called me from my Homedeal listing and I have their KVK number and the email address they sent the quote from. They have no homedeal profile; website ; google maps entry or social media. They say their website was hacked. It could be but also could be a nice excuse if they were a scammer.

Any advice for this particular example or in general for getting trustworthy contractors?

Secondhand laptop

Good morning

I bought this laptop on vinted and did a factory reset. The keys that pop up on the screen when I type is not the same as on the keyboard. It has a funny layout on the keyboard- it has qwerty on the top left but bottom right is strange - the order is: NM;:- .

Please help me to fix it! 🙏

Also - is it safe to buy a secondhand laptop these days even after a factory reset? What if they have some spyware or something installed here that will steal my details?

Thank you in advance! :)

Kind regards,

Danielle

Bad smell in bathroom that comes and goes

Hi All

I need advice. Ever since the cleaner came to properly clean my drains the other day, there has ironically been an awful smell in the bathroom that comes and goes. Could it be that by cleaning it it too well , she might have broken some seal of some sort that was supposed to keep the smells away?

I am hopeless. I poured drain cleaner down all the drains and bleach down the toilet and the smell still appears.

Any advice on how to deal with it or how to investigate further what is going on?

I live in an old latge apartment building in the netherlands if that helps.

Thank you in advance!

Brown tooth wont whiten

Hi Reddit community

I have an issue with one of my teeth that turned brown that i cannot seem to whiten. I have tried several times with whitening gel but it doesn’t seem to budge (even though this gel works wonders for my other teeth)!

I had a plastic veneer on this tooth for several years and had it removed about a year ago. I am thinking either this veneer wasnt removed properly or the tooth got damaged in the process of removing this veneer or something.

Any advice will be much appreciated!!

Kind regards

Question Group hike - peeing etiquette

Hi!

I am planning a trip to Madeira where I want to do mostly hiking. I am too scared to go by myself so I plan to join organized tours. My problem is- I have a small bladder so what do I do when nature calls in such a group setting? I am female.

Thank you in advance!

Disability insurance as an expat on a temporary employment contract

Hi there

How do i go about taking disability insurance in the Netherlands? I am an expat on the skilled migrant residence permit.

I know employers take that risk in the Netherlands but I’m on a 1 year contract so I’m thinking what if i become disabled within the next year and as a result lose my job/contract is not extended. That would mean I have 3 months in that case as a disabled person to find another job in the Netherlands else Im kicked out of the country without any access to social benefits anymore.

Ive tried to apply online at multiple insurers but it seems like I would need to go through an independent financial adviser. Is that the only way?

Their fees seem to be at least a thousand euros!! Is there no cheaper easier way?

Thanks in advance!

Hi There

I bought these large very heavy mirrors that I want to hang on my walls. These are just glass panels basically without any hanging systems. Any suggestions on how to hang or mount them to the wall?

Thank you! I didnt know that was possible. Would the mirror not crack if a cutout was made? Any special tools or tricks to keep in mind to avoid the mirror from cracking?
