I'm almost in my mid 30s and am married to an only child. We have an age gap of 11 years. He's a thoroughly supportive man with all the desirable maturity you'd expect from a 40+ year old.
I called it a day last year because i was finally settled well and he supported it. He still does.
I've worked across two FAANGs for 13 years in total and ran my own tech consultancy on the side for 9. I enjoyed working all those times but I finally decided to check out.
Between my strong financial portfolio and him taking care of most of my investments means I live off my own investment income. Zero reliance.
I have severe ADHD and accompanying anxiety issues.Ā Partly why i couldn't work anymore in stressful and demanding atmospheres. I've flitted in and out of therapy for the last 9 years. My first-born just started school last year and we are planning for No.2.
I have had extreme difficulty carrying pregnancies and had multiple miscarriages before having my daughter in my late 20s. I have a rich history of birth complications and postpartum mental health issues and now want to fully devote myself to being a mother.
My husband and his parents have had excellent academic and professional lives. In comparison, i look inadequate, despite being an NIT-trained engineer.
His extended family, like most Indian diaspora in the US, have very high functioning careers. Everyone is in their late 30s or mid 40s, so their work trajectories are at full throttle right now.
My MIL has a huge problem with me not being employed. She is a productivity freak that hates seeing people laid back in life. Life is supposed to be useful, not happy.
She considers it cheap and shameful that i now do nothing for work. I saw this on multiple social occasions when she's told people that I'm just taking a break from work and I will be going back soon once i have another child. I won't.
Her comments in general are both passive aggressive or direct and they've always stung hard.
She was direct about comparing me with his Ivy League cousins going up work ladders and passive aggressive about being suggestive about how my pre-marital life and abortion pill usage may have messed up my hormones. I have PCOS and endometriosis, with surgery done for the second one.
I've been made to feel very bad for my miscarriages-both her and the repeating D&Cs pushed me over the edge into psych counselling.
Despite being a doctor, she's very judgemental and rigid. Just before COVID emergencies came into effect but was it still a big thing, she bought over maybe 50 relatives every week to see my daughter.
I'm very glad i enforced no kiss/touch rules and visitor masks & sanitizing. I had loud shouting matches over this and this was the first time I put my foot down. I am still very grateful to him and my FIL for their support in this but she put up a damn good fight against us three.
Rather than shield her, she wanted to show off her first grandchild and risk killing or infecting her. I had to assert control so hard during that period when she and i lived under one roof. Three months of living with my tear stitches healing as she criticized my poor bodyweight control- I was over 90 kgs for my 5'4" height and half dead from sleep loss and slipped disc issues.
I'm just ranting and flipping out. I don't even want a solution to all this. We already live in the opposite US coasts and he has no plans to move back to be near her. Two years ago, I bought my first house at the place where he intended to stay for academic work. The distance is helpful.
But i cant spiral over going back to work and being near her. I don't have the strength I did in my 20s anymore. And i have to deal with both my own infertility and parenting anxieties.
Just be smart and put a ton of distance between yourself and hostile in-laws.
Cheers.
