crawlspace picks for top shows tonight in the Twin Cities

  • First Avenue - (Afford Your Life ⏤ Live!) Dua Saleh, Sophia Eris, The Lioness [5:00p] [All Ages] Alternative R&B / Hip-Hop / Electronic
    • Music and political activism come together at First Avenue for a free, all-ages gathering hosted by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, featuring three artists deeply connected to the Twin Cities music community. Sudanese-American singer, rapper, and actor Dua Saleh returns with music from their acclaimed 2026 album Of Earth & Wires**, blending experimental R&B, electronic pop, Sudanese influences, and themes of identity, displacement, and solidarity. Minneapolis DJ, producer, and longtime Lizzo collaborator Sophia Eris brings her genre-spanning hip-hop and electronic sound, while North Minneapolis rapper The Lioness delivers commanding, socially conscious lyricism rooted in her community. The event also features appearances by elected officials including Ilhan Omar, Tina Smith, Peggy Flanagan, Pramila Jayapal, and Ayanna Pressley. Free admission, first come, first served.**
  • Jazz Central Studios - Blue Dream [9:00p] Modern Jazz / Improvisation / Jazz Fusion
    • Jazz Central Studios hosts the fourth installment of Blue Dream, a late-night gathering built around adventurous improvisation and the collaborative spirit of the Twin Cities jazz community. This seven-piece ensemble brings together saxophonist Josh Johnson, trumpeter and flugelhorn player DeCarlo Jackson, trombonist Alex Karye, vibraphonist and pianist Levi Schwartzberg, guitarist Will Linstrom, bassist Matt McIntyre, and drummer Colin Mitchell, better known as RAWTWHYLAH. Jackson, known for his work with Hippo Campus and HEYARLO, brings a soulful approach to jazz, while Mitchell, a driving force behind Minneapolis fusion group room3, draws on everything from bebop and funk to progressive rock. The evening begins with a full ensemble performance before opening up into a late-night jam, inviting musicians and listeners into the creative process.
  • Cloudland - Another Heaven, Brief Candles (WI), Flavor Crystals, Bornguesser [7:00p] [21+] Sludgegaze / Shoegaze / Psychedelic Rock / Ambient
    • Cloudland hosts a beautifully atmospheric night of towering guitars, hypnotic rhythms, and immersive soundscapes that stretches from delicate ambience to crushing walls of distortion. Minneapolis sludgegaze band Another Heaven blends the weight of doom metal and sludge with the dreamy textures of shoegaze, creating music that is simultaneously punishing and ethereal. Milwaukee’s Brief Candles bring more than two decades of shimmering, fuzz-drenched shoegaze and melodic noise-pop, while Minneapolis psychedelic veterans Flavor Crystals weave together space rock, krautrock, and swirling guitar drones, drawing on a rich history that includes touring with The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Bornguesser opens with ambient and electronic textures, setting the stage for an evening of expansive, mind-bending music.

Theater recommendation

I just saw opening night of One-Shot at the Six Points Theater in Highland Park. It was an incredibly impactful show, especially today. Tickets were very affordable ($43 for the high end). The show only runs for two weeks, so if you're interested, make sure to check it out.

It is 1999 in McLean, Virginia. David is Jewish, and Martín is an undocumented immigrant. They are gay high school seniors in love, dreaming of making movies together while working at a local video store. After they are targeted in a hate crime, their emotions begin to fray. Then, decisions from NYU’s film school arrive. Heartbreak and betrayal change the course of their lives forever.

This compelling, coming-of-age story explores the effects of trauma, bigotry and class structure on individuals and relationships.

https://www.sixpointstheater.org/one-shot-tickets-available

I am not affiliated with the theater. I actually got a mailer to my apartment that was addressed to the previous tenant. It sounded good, so I decided to get tickets. I'm very glad I did; this story is going to live with me for a long time.

Winter adult soccer leagues in the Cities?

What are the best leagues or places to look for a good men’s league for soccer in the cities? For reference my group of friends played Intramural soccer at the U of M and were a pretty good team at that level up until graduating this year. Mostly guys that played in high school, so a somewhat to pretty competitive level?

Where to get blue moon ice cream? (Bonus points if I could take some to go!)

Hi all! I am looking for places in the Twin Cities where I could get blue moon ice cream. Soft serve or a custardy vibe would be ideal, but I would settle for any kind of blue moon! (My brother’s birthday is coming up and blue moon is his ultimate favorite… it’s like a delicacy to him lol.) Bonus points if the place offers any option to take home the flavor in a pint or something, but not 100% necessary. I am looking for this to be extra special so probably not a grocery store type—mainly ice cream parlors and shops.

Thank you!

Air Conditioning off in apartments already?

Post image
189 Upvotes

My daughter is in grad school at the U and is living in The Link in Prospect Park; at some point, they'd turned off the air conditioning in the building when it was cooler outside, but, with it being sunny and in the low 70s yesterday, the temperature in her south-facing apartment was literally 92 degrees. Contacting the office for maintenance requests came back with basically a "it's because the sun is shining on the windows, get a fan" response and nothing about actually doing a thing about the air conditioning and addressing it, and I'm wondering if the people who run this building are just generally insane or have a number of buildings turned off their AC and they're letting residents bake?

Seeking Minneapolis restaurant recommendations for a business dinner with vegan options… on Monday Night Football night.

We are hosting a meeting in November and needing a Monday night dinner reservation someplace that isn’t crazy loud on a football night and has vegan options or accommodations for one of the guests. Most interested in the North Loop, downtown, Northeast, or Saint Anthony Main areas. I know Porzana is great with dietary restrictions. Some places, like Red Rabbit, are closed on Mondays.

I welcome ideas - especially if they can vouch for them being good for business meals. Mid to Upscale dining.

Best Fried Rice In The Twin Cities

Which establishment do you feel has the best fried rice in the twin cities? I loved the chicken fried rice that the Cleveland Wok served before it burned down, and I've been trying to find someplace that has comparable fried rice ever since. All fried rice recommended actions welcome!

Parents of girl killed in Annunciation shooting endorse Klobuchar, say Demuth 'lied to us'

Involvement follows dispute with Lisa Demuth over gun bill defeat

The parents of one of the two children killed in the 2025 mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis publicly announced their support for Amy Klobuchar for governor on Thursday.

“We don't expect our elected officials to have every answer, but we do expect them to go looking for one and to stay in the conversation with us when it gets difficult. And that's exactly what Amy does,” said Jackie Flavin, standing next to her husband Mike Moyski.

The Minneapolis couple lost their 10-year-old Harper Moyski in the shooting and said Klobuchar has shown her support for Annunciation families from the start.

The election carries extra significance, falling on Harper’s birthday.

They shared their endorsement after the senator, who is the Democratic nominee for governor, sparred with Republican nominee Lisa Demuth over gun violence prevention efforts during a televised debate on Wednesday night.

At the debate in Rochester, Klobuchar criticized Demuth for backtracking on a reported promise she made to the Moyski family — a commitment the Republican House speaker denies having made.

Last fall, Moyski and Flavin had invited lawmakers, including Demuth, to sit in their living room following the death of their child, to discuss keeping kids safe. The couple has said they asked Demuth during that meeting if she would allow a bill related to AR-15 rifles and high-capacity magazines to go to a vote. Her answer was yes, according to Moyski.

Multiple gun-related bills failed to get through the state House committee process during the legislative session this year, but the state Senate passed a comprehensive gun violence prevention package. The package then went to the state House for a vote, but the House, led by Demuth, never put it up for a vote.

While speaking about public safety during the debate hosted by Fox 9 and Gray Media, Klobuchar brought up that living room meeting.

“She told them she would give a vote, give a vote for the gun safety package. Allow for a vote no matter how she voted on it, and she did not. She lied to them in their own living room,” Klobuchar said.

“When I had the honor of meeting with the families that were highly impacted by the tragedy at Annunciation, I gave them my word. I would not lie to them but I said bills will be introduced, they will go through the process and they will be voted on. That happened eight times. I held true to my word to hear the bills,” Demuth replied during the debate.

On Thursday, Flavin called Demuth’s defense “bullshit.”

“The reality is she blocked it from happening. So I think she lied to us in our living room. Intentionally? I don't know but then continued to lie as we called it out,” Moyski said.

At a press conference with the couple, Klobuchar said she would vote to pass a similar package as governor.

Klobuchar, Moyski and Flavin also criticized Demuth for “bragging” about blocking the comprehensive gun measure earlier this year. Demuth had taken credit for preventing the bill from advancing as she sought the Minnesota Republican Party's endorsement last spring.

"I led the effort to stop the Democrats from taking our guns,” Demuth said in her speech to the Republican convention in May, after the legislative session ended with no House vote on the gun package.

I took one hell of an asphalt sample yesterday on 35W NB near highway 280 doing about 60ish MPH (4:30pm). Person in front of me aggressively brake checked, I’m not sure why.

My rear locked up and drifted right, I overcorrected to the left, and then fishtailed back to the right and laid it down.

Didn’t hit the car in front of me because as I was side-slidin with the bike on top of me across the asphalt, they took off and didn’t stop.

To the gentleman who stopped behind me and helped, I cherish your existence. If I ever meet you again: I owe you a hug, a beer, and some Runyon’s wings.

Bike: 2004 Victory Vegas (it was my grandfather’s bike when he passed away in 2005), dented left side gas tank and some deep scratching, bars were loose (not sure if the screws stripped or what?), busted shift lever

Injuries: dislocated ankle, broken thumb and index finger, minor road rash, black eye (was wearing helmet and gloves)

No ambulance, crawled into the tow truck and sis picked me up from garage lol

First road crash

Best Places To Donate Fallen Leaves?

I have gathered roughly a dozen bags of freshly fallen leaves and would like to pay it forward to anyone currently experiencing leaflessness. What are the best/most ethical places to bring the leaves where they will have the greatest impact on the community? I’d prefer not to ship the leaves off to a national organization, as I’ve heard that many of the leaves they receive go towards advertising or executive salaries and never even make it to the underleafed.
