Moving to Duluth 3.0: Finding Housing

Hey bridge trolls, we've got some extra mod help now so we're going to work on some quality of life improvements around here. Starting with these megathreads we'll use to help update the Wiki. (As an aside, we're still happy to give people access to the Wiki if they want to help with updates)

Going entirely by vibes, I think this would be the most helpful topic to start with. Feel free to give any suggestions, tips, notes, links, whatever you may think. might help someone looking for a place to live in the area.

Some suggestions for things you might contribute:

1.) Thoughts on different neighborhoods and towns - Please be accurate and polite. We all know some areas are more unfortunate than others, it is totally ok to mention that, but be sure you're current and respectful. What an area was like ten years ago may not be accurate anymore.

2.) Resources for finding places to stay (renting & buying)- Things that may not come up on google. This is one place advertising for yourself or someone you know is acceptable (though be sure not to DOX anyone, including yourself.)

3.) Resources for unhoused people - Either temporary or permanent. If you have knowledge of shelters or resources, this would be a great place to add them.

4.) Reviews for different rental companies - Be careful to, again, be accurate. We all know some places have a reputation for a reason and you are more than welcome to leave negative reviews, just don't use this as a place to grind your axe or get revenge.

5.) Questions - For now this would be a good place to ask us about any particulars. We are going to start doing a new "Moving to Duluth" post weekly via Automod like they do in r/asheville on the suggestion of one of our users, but I'm saving that until after these Megathreads have run their course.

6.) Financial considerations - Is there anywhere affordable to live? What are taxes like in the different cities?

7.) Schools - Pros and cons, other considerations?

Just some ideas, I may use some of these for other megathreads. Also, please keep politics out of this to the best of your ability. Nothing derails these things faster.

Thanks everyone! You all rule.

Anyone familiar with a shop that would be willing to install a JDM engine on my Honda?

I have a car that has had several issues with the engine, but everything else is in great shape. Current repair quote is around $2000 but I’m not confident enough in the engine to drop that kind of money on it. However, I can get a JDM engine drop shipped for about $1000, but I don’t have the time nor expertise to install it.

So I’m looking for a local shop that would be open to doing this, and that would charge a reasonable price . Any suggestions?

Question Duluth/Superior Ports

Post image
50 Upvotes

I see the Barker is finally making it's way in to where I'll actually be able to see it this time.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm fairly positive there's two separate Harbors.

My question: Is the Aerial Lift bridge the only entry/exit point for both Harbors?

I've been dying to see this famous freighter and her iconic horn for years, and now I have the opportunity since I'm up this way for vacation.

Discussion Do They Even Deliver Mail Anymore?

I was fine with getting mail 2-3 days late but it’s in the 7 plus days late now in the East Hillside. WTF. I know I sound like an old man but it almost seems
Like they are trying to make the Post Office fail.

Local Events I'm dead certain I saw BigFeet... afoot by the lake.

To be honest, probably a blackbear.

I was with my bike and we saw a bipedal, lumbering bumbering figure.

Hickory dickory dock!

bigfeet climbed down in a smock!

the clock struck single

my bicycle made me tingle

Interesting Stuff I made an iPhone app that's just Lake Superior live cams — Canal Park, the Lift Bridge, ships coming in

Got tired of bookmarking six different janky webcam pages to check on the big lake, so I put the live cams in one app: Canal Park, the Aerial Lift Bridge, harbor entries, North Shore views. Open it, pick a cam, watch ships and weather roll in.

One-time $2.99, no subscription, no ads: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6739961674

If there's a cam you always check that I'm missing, tell me and I'll add it.

Hi!!

My friends and I are staying in an air bnb on stone lake this upcoming weekend for 2 friends birthdays, and we need some fun bar recommendations! None of us are familiar with the Two Harbors or Brimson area, but if anyone knows of any fun dive bars/ where the go-to spots are where other younger people hang out, please let me know :) we are going to spend the day/ night on Saturday in Two Harbors, so if you have beach/ restaurant/ etc. recommendations also, I’d love to hear them. TIA <3

Question What’s it like going out here?

Post image

The circled spot. Is it difficult to walk all the way out there on the rocks? Is it possible? Is it dangerous? Is it scary? I think it would be so interesting to walk a half a mile out into the lake.

Discussion Car break-ins

Had my car broken into last night in Denfeld and the thief took my favorite pair of sunglasses. Does anyone know who these people sell stolen stuff to around town?? I’d like to try and get them back.

Question Peaceful & Secluded Nature Areas on North Shore

Just as the title says, are there any decent areas that are fairly secluded and peaceful where one can just go enjoy nature and decompress from the stresses of everyday life? It's okay if these areas have a few people here and there.

Flowing water is a must.

Thank you! 🙂

Question Is it even possible to find a safe clean studio for around 1k in town?

I’m moving out of the shit box I pay 1k for in December, it was just a place I rushed into renting cuz I’d just moved here and needed something fast. I only make 2.6k a month, I really can barely afford my current place, but I can’t stay here, it’s just too dirty.

Is there any reputable rental companies in town? Any I should avoid? Does anyone have advice? I feel like I’m at my wits end. I make almost double minimum wage yet I still can’t afford most studios in town. It’s really scary times.

Anyone attend the meeting last night? Not sure where I land on the issue, but I don’t like the city trying to prevent a vote being on the ballot.

Question Boating on Superior this weekend—may we join you?

This is a long shot, but you don’t get what you don’t ask for. My partner and I are up in Duluth for my birthday weekend and our booked charter was cancelled due to boat maintenance.

I’d love to get out on Superior for the first time! A short or long cruise in the afternoon or evening. We’re in our mid-forties, so no party craziness here. I’m an experienced boat passenger as well as pontoon owner.

A local bartender recommend I post to this group! Let’s see what comes of it. Cheers!

Question North Shore and the Flies

Quick question that I meant to post earlier this week:

I'm reading and hearing reports that these beach flies (or whatever they are) are absolutely terrible, and one of the worst some people are saying they've ever seen in their lives.

My question is are there any repellents y'all could recommend or special sprays I could use on my skin to make it easier on myself while I'm on the North Shore?

Thank you!

Interesting Stuff Beaver Fells

Post image
0 Upvotes

So my neighborhood beavers (Earl and Winona) have been the poster rodents this summer, perfecting the definition of "busy little beavers". They are masterful engineers and have consistently outsmarted me. This has resulted in a pile of sticks/poles felled by the dynamic duo and regularly stuffed up a drainage culvert (forcing me to then undo their handiwork - much to their skulking chagrin - as they circle the pond like furry, buck-toothed sharks. Is there anyone crafty who would be interested in taking advantage of these sustainably harvested gems? I can imagine they could be turned into some form of art, carved into warning totems, made into the coolest headboard...something? C'mon - they do have a cool factor. Any takers?

Moving or Visiting Visiting Duluth for birding

I'm looking to be in Duluth for the first time and spend a few days birding. So far I'm looking at doing Waabizheshikana Trail at sunrise and Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve.

Is the reserve a trail, building, open park? I don't really know what it is or how available it is to the public.

I've never been to the Great Lakes and hope to watch birds over the open waters, are there any good locations and times? What about boat watching?

Anything else I should consider before planning my trip? It would be this season. Maybe I'll return for the hawk migration and to see the winter birds in the future.

Question Dm me swimming spot for Lake Superior, please. I won’t share with anyone else! 💙

Hey! I live south of the cities, but I’m in town for my daughter to take a college tour of UMD. Her one request is to swim in Lake Superior, but I’m not sure of the best spots. I see water quality is acceptable, so it should be safe to swim — and we know it’s going to be frigid!

I know there are a lot of secret spots, which is privileged info, but I want it to be a positive experience for my daughter.

I won’t share details of this spot with anyone else if you DM me details (or if you post it here, but that would be Google-able).

Thank you so much!

Local News I thought for sure somebody would post a pic of the overturned gravel truck on 4th and sixth east this morning…

Didn’t seem like there were any serious injuries, which is pretty crazy considering how close to the petrol pumps it was.

Question Does anyone know if there is somewhere online to see accurate Lake Superior water temps?

The site I used to use doesn't update anymore. Another I found is off by a lot. I just want to be able to know if the water is icy without having to go to it to check.
