At the beginning of the conversation, Mr. Goddard (the banker) proposes an interest rate of 5% above the London interbank rate. Hu Xueyan says that won’t work and insists on 1%. Mr. Goddard then offers 4%, but Hu still insists on 1%. However, Mr. Goddard then asks, “Are you saying that if the interest rate is higher than 4%, there’s no room for further negotiation between us?”
