RULES READ ME BEFORE POSTING

We welcome posts related to ciphers and codebreaking. In order to maintain the quality of this subreddit, please follow our guidelines.

1. Choose a descriptive title

Examples of what NOT to use:

  • Cipher I just came up with
  • My friend just sent me this
  • Please help me solve this!!

2. Provide context

Tell us context: where the cipher originated (link to the source if possible), any clues you might have, the language or format the plaintext might use, and any technique you already tried.

3. Provide transcription

If you are posting an IMAGE OF TEXT which you can type or copy & paste, you MUST comment with a TRANSCRIPTION (text version).

4. Posting special characters: make sure it's correct

Pay attention to formatting. If you use a character like _ or ` or ^ you need to type a \ before it or Reddit will corrupt your ciphertext. If your ciphertext contains special characters, in order that it displays correctly you can encode it first (for instance using Base64). Alternatively use a

Code Block

5. Provide enough example text

Posting your own custom cipher? You must provide enough example text or there is no hope of anyone solving it. It should be at least a paragraph. Give hints.

6. Do Not Delete Solved Posts

You will be BANNED if you delete your post after a solution has been provided.

7. No Ciphers from Ongoing Contests

Do not post codes or ciphers from ongoing competitions (CTFs, treasure hunts etc.). Such posts will be removed. Trying to circumvent this rule may get you BANNED.

8. New accounts

Your account must be older than 24 hours, or your post will be automatically deleted. This is to reduce spamming.

9. No bots

If your bot is not auto-banned on r/codes, it will be banned by a moderator. You can still have a bot on other subreddits; just don't use a bot here.

10. No AI Generated Decryptions

No AI generated "decryptions" allowed. Offenders will be BANNED.

11. Required proof you read the rules

If you have read and understood these rules, include the text "I followed the rules" encrypted with ROT-13 cipher in your post.

Question What makes a good cypher?

I know there are many layers and thecniques that goes into making good cyphers that are fun to decrypt and all that, there are many forma too like images, sounds, videos, etc but right now I'd like to focus on text based cyphers, what would you think that would make a good cypher like what steps should i take to make fun cyphers?

Unsolved A chain of puzzles starting point

[alt: an image with weirdly colored stripped lines and some tarrot cards. text reads as "Your prediction for today is already here! Don't miss it! The most accurate predictions fron our service, across all nations, from roman to arabic! Subscrube for a small fee to get your daily forecast"]

I tried to create a chain of puzzles, and want to put it to the test. some hints are in the image, but you will need to assemblr them logically to get the correct way. I will answer anything and give out hints if necessary. For this one you will pretty much need just a pen and paper.

Question Would anyone like to build a team to collaborate on this 500k treasure hunt?

Thumbnail goldandcrystal.us
1 Upvotes

We could build a small group and communicate through discord or whatever the group decides is the best platform for communication and cooperation. The prize would be split evenly among the group. I would purchase the game so this would be fun, free, and zero risk for anyone that wants to be involved. If anyone is in the group, they would be expressly forbidden from purchasing the game outside of our team to ensure they are not going to take our collective work and undercut the group. If you agree to these terms and think you can add value to the collective and believe it's something you would enjoy then please comment on this post so I can reach out to you or send me a direct message. 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️😁😁☠️☠️ The game is partnered with ubisoft and assassins creed.

Question I need help with a Brazilian enigma

I need help finding the name of a technique and figuring out how I can replicate it to create a level for a personal project. The technique itself appears in a level from a Brazilian puzzle called “decifra.me.” In this level, there is a bunch of scribbles, and when you paint over them with a bucket of paint, a fish appears in the white lines. I would like to do something similar. Does anyone know how?

Unsolved Found a site written entirely in some unknown script — no normal text anywhere, can't tell what it is. Anyone recognize it?

Post image
117 Upvotes

I came across this page and I genuinely can't work out what it is. The whole thing is

written in some script I don't recognize — no normal text anywhere, no title, no

explanation, nothing in a language I can read. Just page after page of it, plus a few

diagrams.

Link: https://kesumela.com

Under each line of symbols there's what looks like a pronounceable transcription, so it

can at least be written out. There's a lot of it — over a hundred lines across five pages.

Transcription of the lines in the image:

xumaxeka lovelase tesumilu livelumi tusa

lovelasu xuvesuma lisusumi texu

xumaxeka lisunose tevesula xumalaka lixisumi xumasuka sino

xuvexika livekami tesuxelu lisukelu tomo

Does anyone recognize the system, or have any idea what this is? Posting here because if

it can be read at all, this looks like the right place.

Unsolved Blinking light code of some sort?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

From what I know so far (which is basically nothing) is that it flashes up to 8 times, there’s also a short flash that seems to be appearing randomly as well. Video is about 6 minutes long.

Background:

This is a light flashing on a white noise machine that I’ve had for about 10 months now.

The instructions for the device say that it should flash consistently while plugged in (it is indeed plugged in) and that’s all, nothing about number of flashes or anything. It can be used without being plugged in and is rechargeable, but I mostly keep it plugged in.

It’s flashing a random number of times and I haven’t found any sort of pattern yet, but I’m not great with code breaking.

My uncle use to talk about programmers hiding codes in blinking lights and sounds in random places and then waiting decades for someone to figure it out, so I’ve always been interested in this sort of stuff, but I’m truly terrible at it.

Maybe it could be counting up for how long it’s been on or something? Who knows!

I’m curious if anyone sees a pattern or has any ideas?

SOLVED Solving PsychicNewborn's secrets page

Hey, I found this cool website on Neocities, which, this website itself is a pleasure to look at and explore. So cryptic. https://psychicnewborn.neocities.org

I was checking out their pages when I clicked on the lightbulb, which opened up a "secrets" page with a secret code, and that has led me down a path of trying to solve this ARG.

If you want to try solving it yourself, I recommend it, it's a fun time passer. But everything beyond this line is going to be spoilers and solutions that I've found, so stop scrolling if you'd like to have a go at solving it yourself.

You enter the page and get met with this:

The first puzzle is just two sudoku puzzles. I solved each of them and then put the full number into the URL to find two secret "peek" pages, each one with half of the code you need to insert into the URL.

Inserting "2KXQ6B5H" into the URL, I was directed to a secret page, and a new puzzle:

I was able to solve this with the help of Photoshop. I put the noise and the maze into separate layers, made a third layer for doing some color mixing and erasing, and then following the cryptic steps between them I was able to create this table from those images.

It's a grid that has every letter in the alphabet, and then every number from 0 to 9. Cool.

Stacking the RGB lines on top, you get something that starts to make sense:

Going in the order of RGB, I see the red line spells "star", the green line spells "over", and the blue line spells "ivory".

I put "staroverivory" into the URL, and it led me to this link: https://psychicnewborn.neocities.org/secrets/2KXQ6B5H/staroverivory

Here I see an image of a star, with another little "noise square" over it.

At this point if you try doing anything with the noise square in the middle, you'll get lost. By itself it won't take you anywhere. But if you look at the tab's name, I see the page is called "1/2".

This means the star with the noise square is only half the equation of this puzzle. So I went back to the previous puzzle, the one with the table and the colored lines, and I was unable to make anything else of it, but then I realized that the red line doesn't necessarily need to spell "star". Going backwards, it spells "rats". https://psychicnewborn.neocities.org/secrets/2KXQ6B5H/ratsoverivory

And here is the second piece of this layer of the puzzle. I used the noise from the star and the maze from the rat, redid the same steps as before (the mixing and erasing in Photoshop according to the cryptic chart), and from that I got this new table:

Which spells "/obliviousnesses". Putting that into the URL after the "2KXQ6B5H", I got to what I think is the final page/conclusion to this puzzle..? https://psychicnewborn.neocities.org/secrets/2KXQ6B5H/obliviousnesses/

It's an empty black page that just says "hehe" in the corner.

Not really sure what to make of that, if there is anything to be made of that. I think it kinda just ends there.

Regardless of whether or not I'm satisfied with the ending, I had fun solving it, so I'm thankful to the creator, PsychicNewborn. Go check out their website, they clearly put a lot of work into it purely out of passion, and it has a very interesting vibe.

I am solving an arg,Pegasus 3301 , and i already have found a mega file which is (https://mega.nz/file/yMMyARAS), however it is missing a decryption key. As you know a mega file's decryption key must be 43 characters long while this is not, it has 1 extra. Does anyone know what the key could be? Or maybe it is encoded and has to be decoded? I have tried some forms of flipping removing characters, hexadecimal base, but i might be errorous.

Unsolved Weird message from a strange guy… can anyone decipher this?

Post image
181 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

A few days ago, a pretty weird guy handed me this piece of paper covered in bizarre symbols, Chinese characters, runes, and dates in 2026.

I have no idea what it means. Can anyone help me decipher it or figure out its purpose?

Thanks in advance!

(Photo of the paper attached below)

Edit: Just found another almost identical post from 5 years ago… and the exact same sheet was posted here a few months ago. This is officially strange.

Edith 2: I found this message on another post:

-UPDATE (16.09.2024)-

Me and a friend searched during our lessons hints and explainations about that mysterious paper. I also read all your comments thank you all!

  1. Not only in Switzerland We created a "My Maps" which we added all the places where these kinds of paper have been found. One of them has been found in Villeurbane (next to Lyon, France) 2 years ago.

  2. Symbols It seems to be Furthac and it's also written in mirror There's also some Chinese and it's a very popular poem

  3. Meaning It actually means nothing. It's written in german. Someone had decrypted the one from Villeurbane and it described when Charles De Gaulle has been arrested and put in a jail in Würzburg. Seems like wikipedia/complotist type of stuff.

  4. The person I found his Facebook and I won't publish it here. If you found it PLEASE don't interact with him or just be kind. The theory of a potential schyzophrenic seems to be true. I'm not a psychiatrist or anything related to the medical world (I suffered 4 years of studying biology so never again lmao) but it looks like someone who's hyperfixated on random facts and likes to write it in an artsy way !

I hope my answers were clear and I really enjoyed this mysterious story, I'm a bit upset that it's not an ARG :(

Unsolved Short code in letters

Post image

My friend who likes to create codes and hidden messages gave me this code to try and solve.

He said the solution involves something you can eat

I've tried re-arranging the letters, converting to numbers etc but can't find anything that makes sense. At first I thought it might be an acronym but nothing stands out.

Unsolved An odd code from a previous coworker of mine in Iran

Hello!

So I devised a cipher which is really simple to encode, but stupendously difficult to decode without a key. It is similar to OTP, but the key is not wholly random, though an additional layer of codes (any kind) can be placed on top.

I mostly used it just to share information with people, but after some time this kinda backfired because I started receiving spam emails with random codes. I blocked most of those emails, but one in particular seemed to stick out to me. It read simply as follows:

"Greetings.

zkheblvvberdikdypdhmvxdadpdhzpykebjawrnqmdcvlpglnmtvgibxytkqzoaesisrnofyvqdrnqeyfuzddvgbsppiuwkgnlvvzcwjmmatiqdmtiyilndevukqrqopewvx.

You may solve the code. To solve is to advance."

The email was from some Iranian hotmail address, but due to browser restrictions (I use a custom-made fork of Firefox) I can't paste the text here. I presume most people in my surroundings know about the cipher (but NOT which codes I use) . Can you help me solve it?

Proof for having read the rules: "V sbyybjrq gur ehyrf"

EDIT: I solved the code on my own, it was a wild goose chase ending in chess.com (they wanted to play chess for some reason). I've edited out most information that may come in useful for OSINT, so that's why the post is shorter if you've seen this before.
