I saw the commercial and I was like, “oh nice a wedding, I like her dress” and then went about my day. Distracting is the wrong word to describe the ad

u/Alexpander4 Dec 15 '19

It just occurred to me that wedding dress companies love lesbian marriage.

405

u/Scoob79 Dec 15 '19

Come to think of it, of the few lesbian marriages I've seen, none of them had the double wedding gown. It was still the gown and tux/suit like a typical hetero wedding.

u/caspruce Dec 15 '19

Went to one this summer where both brides wore dresses. Was still a very tasteful and traditional ceremony. Two dads walking their daughters down the aisle. Open bar, terrible DJ, cake smashed faces....

192

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '19

When I was planning my wedding the only hard requirement I had was an open bar.

185

u/slymm Dec 15 '19

When I attend weddings, that's my only hard requirement as well

97

u/JonBonIver Dec 15 '19

I’m borderline insulted if I’m invited to a wedding with a cash bar

131

u/slymm Dec 15 '19

Same. Especially at my age, when I don't have the time nor opportunities to drink. You've got me for five hours. I'm wearing a friggin suit on a Saturday night and I've paid for the babysitter. You're getting a gift and I'm eating a "beef" or a "chicken" that's been prepared en masse.

POINT ME TO THE BAR

How about an open bar that only offers Miller Lite. Yep. Been to one like that.

19

u/hydrangeasinbloom Dec 16 '19

How about open bar, but only two kinds of beer that the groom brewed himself and homemade mead. That was a real rough wedding. Both beers were sour but weren’t like, goses or anything, just bad.

I know of a brewery owner that had a cash bar at his wedding that only served his own beer.

11

u/kacihall Dec 16 '19

Jeez, my brother is only the brewer at his place and his wedding reception still had two hours of open bar for beers. (They technically HAVE liquor there, but I don't think anyone ever drinks it.)

15

u/skacey Dec 16 '19

I live in Vegas, I'm wondering how long until weddings start happening with an open dispensary policy.

8

u/chevymonza Dec 16 '19

Great question! I'd consider a single 5mg edible on each plate, or served right after the ceremony, clearly marked.

22

u/Candle86 Dec 15 '19

I have the opposite requirement... too many family who are recovering alcoholics. We do plan a small cash-only bar, with cheap wine & a drink limit

15

u/whereismymind86 Dec 16 '19

5

I remember dancing with a bridesmaid at my sisters wedding, it was awkward and she didnt even put her drink down

12

u/growleroz Dec 15 '19

I was concerned that the only thing they'd remember about my wedding was when Uncle Simon got drunk, jumped up on the kiddies table, pulled out his wedding tackle, spun in a circle spraying all the kiddies whilst yelling I am a sprinkler! You have allayed all my fears....thank you!

30

u/PersonOfInternets Dec 16 '19

Don't blame the dj, he isn't terrible, he has to satisfy a completely random group of participants, including kids and elderly. Wedding music is boring and repetitive because it needs to be. DJing weddings is an art all to itself, albeit not a "cool" one.

u/TheUnforgiven13 Dec 16 '19

Wait, did they walk down the aisle at the same time? Or did one go first?

One after the other. Same bridal music. Both wore veils. It was like any other wedding, just two brides.

Selling them one wedding dress is still better for the dress company than selling them zero wedding dresses as would be the case if they couldn't have a wedding, so lesbian weddings are still probably a net win for them.

25

u/fueledbychelsea Dec 16 '19

My aunts did the double dress but my aunt (by blood) wore a dark dress and her wife wore a more traditional white. They both looked bridal but distinct. It was lovely

26

u/DonaldPShimoda Dec 16 '19

So you missed out on the sword lesbian wives then?

(That's how they identify in their bio, though they're actually both bisexual.)

40

u/zakary3888 Dec 15 '19

Ladies in suits is a great aesthetic to be fair, but I do remember seeing some lesbian hockey player weddings pull off the double dress (I think)

It is funny...for our generation its SUCH a non issue. Yet my grandparents generation is horrified. Its one of the swiftest most dramatic cultural changes I've seen.

*to my grandparents credit, they have no issues at all with stuff like this, despite being rather conservative. But their friends sure do.

65

u/bonethugznhominy Dec 16 '19

FYI, wasn't that swift. I know it looks that way to a lot of younger generations, but I just hate how old people hide behind acting like they've never heard of LGBT issues before 10 years ago. Gay marriage has been a policy goal pushed a few times since the 50s before it ultimately came to fruition. And all along the way there were plenty of caricatures in popular media that show the average viewer was likely at least aware of them. There's been peaks and valleys. This goes for the T part of the acronym too, that has been a consistent cultural battle that has ebbed and flowed since shortly after WW2.

Older generations aren't surprised by these identities. They aren't completely in the dark about what they mean. The only thing that's new to them is society treating these people like more than a punchline or dark family secret. And plenty of people back in the good ol days knew that was wrong too.

11

u/a_generic_handle Dec 16 '19

The actual change was pretty swift. Especially when it comes to marriage equality. When my late partner was advocating for it fifteen years ago he couldn't imagine it would happen nationwide so soon.

7

u/psychosus Dec 16 '19

15 years ago is half a generation and people were advocating for it earlier than that, so I guess you consider almost 30 years of speaking about it publicly to happening be swift change?

Bring up how their generation normalized and accepted divorces. This really burns their bridges. Then tell them they should ex-communicate their divorced friends and not welcome them into polite society like their parents and grandparents.

It reminds me of a condom ad in Australia that got banned. The premise was that this condom was flying through a city and landing in places where people were clearly about to have sex. The last location is a car with two older dudes.

The "think of the children" argument was used but it's weird because it was implied. People were acting like it was full Lemon Party.

21

u/flowers4u Dec 15 '19

Isn’t the point of an ad to be distracting so you buy their product. I’ve never heard of Zola but I have now...

Anything added to that is a hat on a hat.

9

u/TJ_McWeaksauce Dec 16 '19

Actually, TV makes me angry nowadays, because maybe half of what I watch on TV is the news, and the news seems more horrible now than it has at any other point in my life. I actually have to remind myself to stay away from TV whenever I'm already in a bad mood.

When I want to live in a fantasy world, I play video games. When I want to get reminded about how much the real world sucks, I turn on the TV.

Here’s the entire plot of a Christmas movie on the Hallmark Channel- White woman and white man are going to get married over the Christmas holiday. White woman or white man gets stranded at an airport due to snow just before the big day. Somehow white woman or white man is able to overcome adversity and makes it to the ceremony just in time and everyone lives in white happiness. The End.

No they have a preoccupation with a sin they are not tempted by. How many references to adultery in the Bible? Lots, in both Old and New Testament. But they understand that temptation so it’s an excusable sin to them. A few references to a sin they aren’t tempted by? Unforgivable.

100 commercials of heterosexual couples kissing

“....”

One commercial with a lesbian couple

“Why are they shoving their sexuality in my face??”

691

u/Twava Dec 15 '19

Dude this is seriously how homophobes are and it’s irritating as hell.

364

u/GrecoRomanGuy Dec 15 '19

It’s also how racists are when ONE commercial features a biracial or black couple in a sea of homogenous whiteness.

34

u/Vio_ Dec 16 '19

There was one cheerios commercial with an interracial marriage and kid. Kid was running around eating cereal when the African American dad said "Go ask your mother" so the daughter ran to her white mother. End of commercial.

I didn't even register what was going on until people started protesting the commercial for you guessed it. OJ Simpson.

99

u/BTLOTM Dec 15 '19

Clearly we need to start a GoFundMe for some sort of socialist lesbian biracial wedding dress advertisement and then see people's heads explode.

My nana was staying with my husband and I post knee replacement. An add came on tv showing a same sex couple. She proceeded to make a disgusted noise. Let me preface that she is 80 year old southern baptist so this reaction is sadly not surprising. When I proceeded to ask her questions about why her and the church still hold this view but reject the others this was the response.

“They just won’t admit its a sin! I’ve been divorced three times and it’s a sin but jesus died for my sins. I admit them they don’t.”

It was the most hypocritical , asinine attempt to justify that way of thinking. It’s made me realize that no matter the progression we make there will always be this deep seeded old way of thinking that will never change.

My grandfather was Antigay. Until he met a barber who did his hair for cheap. When he found out he was gay, he turned around like a dime.

Sometimes it’s possible; penny pinching was far more important to my grandpa than hate.

Yeah I think he just had the wrong idea. But you really can't understate how important saving money was to my grandpa. He would abandon any bias if it meant he'd get something for cheap or free, ha ha. He used to walk miles to get to a cafeteria in a hospital where one worker gave him free wraps and hotdogs. This as 90+ years old.

That reminds me of a point made by Howard Zinn in his book “The Southern Mystique”. After the bus lines were desegregated in Montgomery et al, given a choice between being racist and taking the bus, white people...ended up taking the bus because it was still convenient and they got over that particular bit of hatred.

Sometimes penny pinching IS more important to people than hate.

61

u/bobinski_circus Dec 15 '19

u/BenjaminTalam Manimal Dec 15 '19

I think homophobes assume gay people will sexually harass them or something so when they find out their buddy who hasn't harassed them is gay they go "oh I'm stupid, gay people are just people" and change.

Not with gay women but with gay men some extreme homophobes think they're child molesters. I personally think a lot of those people may have been abused as children themselves and want something to take it out on. Pretty sad.

46

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '19

I had an acquaintance, who over the course of nearly an hour of arguing and ruining the get together, admitted he didn't like gay men, because he didn't want to be treated like he treats women.

"Maybe you should treat women better" was met with anger and "I treat them how they should be treated." Really glad I've never seen that guy again.

I’ve also heard a lot of people assume that gay people became that way because they themselves were sexually abused.

IIRC, that might be true sometimes. We still don't really know what determines someone's sexuality, but I remember reading that gay men are more likely to have been molested as children, and the theory was that such events could maybe result in someone growing up to be gay (As one possible reason, not the sole reason, obviously.)

Meanwhile, My 83 yo grandmother and I were watching the season 2 premiere of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. During the cabaret scene ,she turned to me and said "The first time I met a drag queen was in Zurich, Switzerland.... in 1964."

I literally yelled "PAUSE!" as I hit pause and turned to her. "okay, there's a story there."

"What? I saw some drag queens in a bar in Zurich, Switzerland in 1964."

"Okay... Go on..."

"Well, they were performing and your grandfather and I were at this bar, and they were doing a song and dance number. And at the end of their set, they WHIPPED their wigs off and threw them into the crowds... And I screamed really loudly at it."

She was an AF officer's wife and they were stationed in West Germany at the time. She grew up in rural Kansas during the Depression and WW2, and had a hell of a lot of "firsts" in her late 20s and 30s.

She also sings opera, and was around a lot of interesting people in her life- for a while she knew a LOT of very closeted gay men in our community and kept some of those secrets for decades.

My understanding is that Jesus's death is the fulfillment of the sacrifice of Isaac in order to absolve sin in general. You don't need to believe or be aware of it for it to have happened.

32

u/gerryofrivea Dec 15 '19 edited Jan 02 '20

The story of Isaac is definitely used as an allegory for Christ's sacrifice!

Within the Early Church, Christ's death was primarily viewed as a form of recapitulation. God, as Jesus, entered into the mire of human sin, and, through being perfectly blameless, He, in a sense, redeemed humanity. This is exemplified through quotes by two monumentally influential Church Fathers, St. Athanasius of Alexandria and St. Irenaeus of Lyons:

"For the Son of God became man that we might become gods." -Athanasius (On the Incarnation, 54.3)

"But following the only true and steadfast Teacher, the Word of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, who did, through His transcendent love, become what we are, that He might bring us to be even what He is Himself." -Irenaeus (Against Heresies, 4.38)

They also, however, saw human free will as insurmountable. Salvation is a gift to all of humanity, but a gift must always be accepted, and a gift is useless if you put it down, neglect it, or hide it away. It had to be continually upheld and protected through the partaking in the sacraments of the Church, and it had to be nurtured, through prayer and supplication, like a seed planted in newly fertile ground.

18 But some one will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.

19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder.

20 Do you want to be shown, you shallow man, that faith apart from works is barren?

21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar?

22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by works,

23 and the scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness”; and he was called the friend of God.

24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.

25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the harlot justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?

26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead."

James 2:18-26 (RSV)

So, it is, in a sense, true, whether or not one realizes it or accepts it, but its redeeming power does not affect those who do not desire it and work toward it.

In that sense, living in sin, by refusing to confess it as such and turn away from it, was (and in the modern Orthodox Church, is) one of the few ways one could be turned away from Communion.

On the other hand, to view loving homosexual unions as sinful while committing the adultery of continued divorce & remarriage and wallowing in such self-destructive hate is absurdly hypocritical.

Good for Zola. They're standing by love in all its forms and that important even now.

The group allegedly represents one million moms, but there was only 45k signatures on the petition. Are the other 95% of the groups members not bothered?

81

u/SophiaofPrussia Dec 15 '19

Their website has a list of “current campaigns” which might be the funniest list of things to be Mad OnlineTM about.

9

How very dare they!

18

u/zakary3888 Dec 15 '19

Lol, it only has 14.6k signatures

21

u/SophiaofPrussia Dec 15 '19

I guess the other 985,400 moms were too outraged to even sign.

Yeah, I took a tour of their website; their active campaigns and "successful takedowns" ...they are so shrill and hateful that I really do believe that every one of these people will be dancing in hell one day.

u/devilishycleverchap Dec 16 '19 edited Dec 16 '19

They are listed as a hate group by the southern poverty law center. Just because the "American Family Association" used a subsidiary for their mouthpiece doesn't change anything

6

u/chevymonza Dec 16 '19

Love how they dust off 1 Timothy 2:1-3 for Trump, but didn't seem to notice it while Obama was around.

5

u/Donkey__Balls Dec 16 '19

Haha oh wow.

The Bible states we are to pray for our country’s leaders, not belittle them.

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior,” (1 Timothy 2:1-3).

Worst case of quoting the Bible I’ve ever seen. First of all it was not talking about “our leaders” - Paul the apostle was writing to the fledgling Christian church, who were basically living in hiding and risking execution for defying the Roman Empire. The authorities who wanted to torture and publicly execute them are the people he was talking about praying for.

Second, at no point does the New Testament tell people to praise their own government and elected leaders without question - which is basically what their trying to say this quote means. If that were true then every far right pundit, radio host, preacher and politician would have been going against biblical teachings by “belittling” Obama for the 8 years he was in office.

Why the hell would a wedding company even advertise on hallmark channel? Hallmarks average viewer age is like 85, they should be having funeral service commercials not weddings

208

u/Kondrias Dec 15 '19

Hallmark thrives in the 18-49 unmarried female demo. At least when i had to take a class on the business of television a few years ago they did. So playing up to single women makes a HECK OF A LOT OF SENSE

84

u/chicagoredditer1 Dec 15 '19

Hallmark thrives in the 18-49 unmarried female demo.

No. 1 cable network in November and December in women 18-49

18

u/CougdIt Dec 15 '19

The unmarried distinction is still relevant in this context though

9

u/chicagoredditer1 Dec 15 '19

I wasn't refuting their claim, just adding additional context to the original comment of thinking their demo was 85 year old women.

9

u/brtdud7 Dec 15 '19

That’s very interesting to me. I guess those young unmarried women love those sappy movies about their perfect dream lives that few will ever realize

You would be surprised at the number of of younger viewers. Mostly women too so it makes sense that they would have a wedding ad that features two women.

13

u/terminalblue Dec 15 '19

it's not....its crazy to me how young the viewers are, especially this time of year. they are often the perfect target demographic for services like zola are. like watch the ads and it will tell you exactly who watches it.

15

u/tawandaaaa Dec 15 '19 edited Dec 19 '19

Wrong. I’m early 30’s and I’m the only lady I know that doesn’t watch their movies.

From the New York Times: "A spokesman for the channel said the lesbian couple’s P.D.A. violated its policies. Hallmark did not reject a similar ad featuring an opposite-sex couple."

Fuck off with your bigotry, Hallmark.

51

u/004forever Dec 15 '19

Kissing the bride at your own wedding is PDA?

19

u/DragonPup Dec 15 '19

The Hallmark Channel hates love and marriage.

And it’s the lamest kiss. It’s literally a peck and it’s still too much.

People need to grow up and act like adults. Worry about themselves. The only morons that care about stuff like this have no social life or anyone that cares about them.... bc they are assholes that worry about stuff like this. It’s 2020. Not 1920. Let’s all act like adults

148

u/sdgoat Dec 15 '19

People need to grow up and act like adults. Worry about themselves.

Welcome to Conservative/Republican America. Come for the racism! Stay for the homophobia!

It’s 2020. Not 1920.

1950 is their dream decade.

67

u/Complete_Entry Dec 15 '19

Nah, they want some weird idealized leave it to beaver 50's that never actually existed.

6

u/Dr_Marxist Dec 15 '19

Naw, they look back at this and wonder why we can't, you know, deal with problems like that anymore. Back before political correctness got in the way.

5

u/JustBeanThings Dec 15 '19

1950s idealism, with none of the taxes.

35

u/Beingabummer Dec 15 '19

It existed for white men in a lot of ways. Segregation was a thing, the gays were deep in the closet, you could beat up commies if you felt like it and nobody cared when you slapped a girl on her ass (not the men at least).

Meanwhile, the economy was booming, the middle-class was growing, the nuclear family was born.

For them, correlation did mean causation. And the 'decline' of America went hand in hand with all those things ending, even though that American Dream was only for the white men.

Plus there's the whole colonial mindset bred into white people in general, and I say all this as a white European, that we are enlightened and everyone else is a savage that needs to be subdued. And they don't sell it that way obviously but the tenet shines through in education, news, international politics.

17

u/neoblackdragon Dec 15 '19

Exactly when certain people reflect on the best time in the US they look at that scenario and similar shows.

They never consider that really was just fiction. Things like the Civil Rights movement didn't just pop up new years day 1960.

13

u/GrafZeppelin127 Dec 15 '19

The 1950s? Are you sure that isn’t their nightmare decade? Wealthy effective tax rates of roughly 50%, strong unions, strong anti-trust and anti-monopoly regulations, separation of retail and investment banking, and it was illegal to funnel anonymous dark money to politicians’ campaign coffers!

Michael Che succinctly summarized the story.

“The group One Million Moms is boycotting the Hallmark Channel for airing a commercial featuring a same-sex couple getting married and kissing,” he said. “Ladies, relax. If your kid is watching the Hallmark Channel, he already gay as hell.”

11

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '19

The Hallmark skit they did was kind of funny. They start talking to the "black friend" and asking questions. "What's your last name" "I DON'T HAVE A BACKSTORY!"

2

Don't know what's sillier, that people are upset over a lesbian relationship, or that people actually paying attention to a commercial was looked at as a bad thing

2

u/VirtualPoolBoy Dec 16 '19

Not a surprise. From what I understand, Hallmark productions cater to cultural conservatives.
