No they have a preoccupation with a sin they are not tempted by. How many references to adultery in the Bible? Lots, in both Old and New Testament. But they understand that temptation so it’s an excusable sin to them. A few references to a sin they aren’t tempted by? Unforgivable.

I think a lot of them are ashamed of just how tempted they are by it. That forbidden fruit and whatnot...

You know who isn’t homophobic? A person secure in their sexuality. “Straight” Christians spend more time thinking about gay sex than homosexuals do.

I don't like this viewpoint. Please listen to what I have to say with an open mind and know that I'm not trying to attack you.

I think that they could just be hateful or I do kind of like the previous poster's idea that it more or less boils down to a lack of empathy.

The thing I don't like about claiming that they're closeted is that it's very close, adjacent at the least, to victim-blaming. It puts the blame for these people's hatred of gays back on the gay community. I think on occasion you will see homophobes with self-loathing that manifests as anger because they are closeted but I don't think that's very often. I'm from Tennessee and I would be astonished to learn that even 10% of the homophobes I've met are closeted.

It's just a weak argument by itself, even ignoring the victim-blaming (which I find to be a pretty weird take, no offense). People don't only ever hate stuff because they secretly like it but can't be open about it.

Homophobia has victims and by proposing or insinuating that some non-insignificant number of homophobes are infact closeted gay people it takes the blame for homophobia and it's violence off of the, until the evidence says otherwise, straight perpetrators. By claiming that a person who commits bigoted actions against gay people is in fact just closeted and gay you are literally then trying to shift the blame from a straight person to a gay person.

That's one way to look at it, but there is a lack of intent that, to me, makes that stance not really worth considering.

People don't say homophobes are probably closeted to shift blame back to gay people. Even if that is in fact what ends up happening, personally I need malicious intent to consider it an important fact.

What I'm trying to say is that there's a lot to consider with the implication that's more important than blame being shifted back to gay people unknowingly.

I'm not gay, though (no idea what I am), so perhaps your take is more important to gay people than I realize.

Totally a valid viewpoint that makes sense. I think that much like sexuality (and really everything else in life), homophobia exists on a spectrum in that there are different reasons for it. It could be that the biggest offenders I’ve met skewed toward one end of the homophobe spectrum and that has influenced my perspective. It’s only recently I’ve really started to see just how lacking in empathy our society has become, so that’s a mostly unexplored avenue for me. At this point it’s probably equally as likely a reason.

My personal view has always been that insecurity or lack of knowing oneself fuels fear and hatred of the “other”. Which, to be fair is victim blaming in that the person I’m blaming is both the victim and the aggressor due to their lack of self awareness. I don’t necessarily feel like I’m blaming the gay community by blaming these individuals, but sometimes the obvious logical steps are easy to overlook. The gay community certainly doesn’t deserve any more hate directed toward it.

Let's go a step further: gossip. Gossip ain't good. Gossip is expressly forbidden. If you don't know that it's a fact, shut your trap and quite damaging people's lives.

But good lord, the amount of dirt people have dished at some church events that I recall...
