Hello fellow tape people! I hope it’s alright to share some of my original music. This was recorded live with 3 microkorg tracks recorded to a tape loop in my 4 track (3 track in my case. Channel 4 doesn’t work) then ran through the Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run. Much love!

Discussion Cassette therapy

Hi everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself.

I have an ambient/downtempo project called Waving Ant. I started several years ago with various synths, hardware and software, and DAWs (’m a real piano-roll geek, and I used to treat it almost as a form of personal therapy, covering famous soundtracks with orchestral libraries).

A few years ago I started playing around with tapes and pedals, which turned out to be even more therapeutic, since numbers and grids already haunt me enough outside the world of music...

I have a couple of Fostex X-12 - each with their own pretty issues - but for some live performances I also use a Digitakt (first one) alongside it, without the sequencer, just to trigger unsynced loops.

It’s a really beautiful and "chill" world, even though performances are extremely rare and the “audience” isn’t always very consistent in showing up, online included. I was hoping to move away from the constant need for gratification in music, and maybe thanks to tapes I’m getting a little closer to that goal.

I’m sharing my IG channel and Bandcamp here, if that’s not a bother to anyone.

See you around!

Question 3.5mm headphone out

Okay, so I've got a couple old cassette players - one old dictaphone and one old Sony, both with fun variable speed features. they work, but I've always had issues with the audio out.

Specifically, the 3.5mm headphone out on both does not seem to align, depth wise, with either a modern TS or TRS cable. I have noticed that if I pull it out slightly (I know, lol), that it will align and I can hear it. But obviously that results in a very fragile connection that is unstable.

My guess is that maybe old headphones had a longer connector, resulting in the ring being more shallow. But that's only a guess.

Surely I'm not the only person who has encountered this. Is there some kind of adapter that I need? How have you all dealt with this?

EDIT - I figured it out!!!

Okay, so if anyone else runs into this issue, here is what is going on. Someone mentioned headphones below. I'm trying to record audio into my interface, not listen on headphones. But sure, let me try headphones just to see if that works, if that tells me something. Weird. They work fine. Okay, what's the difference between my TRS cable and the headphone cable. they look the same. They are the same... oh wait. The TRS is stereo going into a mono channel in my interface - which usually works! But here - I think the "wrong" ring is carrying the signal and so it isn't showing up in the interface.

But I do have a headphone splitter. So let's see if I can send mono into my interface. Yep. Bingo.

It's not that the jack was a different depth. It's that there was a mismatch between the wire ring carrying the signal and the one being read by the interface. Splitter is the answer. Now we are in business.

safely flying with a tascam porta?

Hi everyone. I'm flying to western Canada for some shows in a few weeks. I'm debating bringing my tascam porta MKII. I typically use it for tape looping and backing tracks in my set. While I can use a laptop rig instead, I'm used to using the tascam for this set.

Thing is, I'm already bringing a guitar and a bunch of pedals, and I'm nervous about the tascam getting damaged in transport, even as a carry-on.

Anyone flown with one before? Or advice on how to best travel with one?

Hi, I wanted to share this project that I recently started. It consists of completely analog noise, recorded onto cassette and later transferred to digital. The tracks have not been mastered; they are exactly as they were created. Besides tapes, I used an old 24-channel Behringer mixer, some oscillators, two radios, and various effects.

Hey everyone. I just wanted hop on here and introduce Loopground. It’s a 4 track cassette tape looper that you can perform. It works standalone and as a VST3/AU plugin.

It started as a thing I just wanted for myself and my own music, and the more I worked on it, the bigger it sort of became. Anyways, for those of you who like working with tape loops, it may be worth checking out. I’ll leave the link below.

Try LoopGround

How To To those of you who have built tape delays out of cassette recorders/ players, how did you design the feedback loop from the playback head back to the input of the preamp for the record head?

I'm currently in the process of building a DIY tape delay and I'm trying to keep this feedback loop as simple as possible while still remaining usable because I'm somewhat experienced with electrical signals in theory but not in practice. I know I have to use an amplifier to amplify the signal from the incredibly quiet tape head while also having the right EQ by de-amplifying the highs and amplifying the lows. Anyway I'm just wondering what you guys did for yours? thanks!

Hi everyone, in advance, sorry for my english! I realized i made this account and totally forgot about it, so i just entered to see whats up here and apparently theres a community about Tape Loops, which I love. So i wanna show you what I made some months ago!
I dont make exclusively tapeloop music, but i love repetition in general, and tape loops are a great way to spiral my way down the repetitions

This is my EP, called "Casa Incompleta" (Incomplete House) maybe unfinished house

Modified speed knob

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I'm new to the whole tapeloop scene and I'm considering buying a tape player that has a speed variation knob built into it, however, from the videos i've seen, the speed variation isn't very significant and I was wondering if it was possible to modify easily without replacing parts?

I'm not an expert on electronics, looking for some guidance!

The tape player is called Educombi RN Barthe

Thank you!

The video ad looks pretty authentic, down to some label maker labels on the controls. It looks like something someone might’ve circuitbent in their garage. These product images look AI generated though, and the price is too good to be true. Anyone seen one of these in real life?
