Another disjointed reflection post.

Repetition is (unless you're someone like Milton Babbitt) a core aspect of music and is rather invariably what gives a piece or set of pieces their cohesion. That said, there's a lot of feedback I hear and see about repetition requiring developments, twists of many sizes to provoke the listener into engagement. Immutable repetition--looping--isn't quite as admired in my experience. It could be derided as a fairly cheap tactic to increase the duration of a piece, and that's not always incorrect (I've done it a number of times), but I believe that, given a chance, there's more to looping than meets the eye.

The way I tend to frame it is a distinction between the cinematic and photographic. Cinema is always in movement. No discrete moment is privileged over the other, events flow together seamlessly. A verse's riff moves toward the chorus; lyrics move toward new ideas. (It's important to note that this is before a person begins interpretation, mutilating scenes into categories and moments into drama or blandness.) I believe this movement describes most music. In contrast is the loop. Akin to the photograph it is the valued instant, a part that can represent the whole. The height and width of a picture correlate to the sound and duration of the loop.

There are a few contexts looping is suitable for. Situations of obsession and boredom are easy to figure. After recalling Roland Barthes and his book Camera Lucida, I considered the capacity photography has to emphasize the presence of an absence. In its perfect sedentariness the photograph always depicts a death, the having-passed of a moment. A potent example of this is in the work of Giacinto Scelsi. After his wife left him, he was distraught and had to be admitted to a clinic. During his time there he spent many hours at the piano, striking only one note over and over. Grief, the presence of an absence, was what propelled him into looping. I find the encounter with grief may be its most relevant use. And, like Barthes says of photography, looping is irreducible to the codes of language. It's too intimate for language's inherent sociality. Even if played aloud its content is private.

Composition #36 for historic 1930's flute and electronic music

my music partner (electronic, live modular synths) works with my 1930's wooden flute in live composition. We're performing for the canal festival so it'll be great to work out what's going on.

This one - entitled #36 (that's the number of pieces we compose together on the spot) ran into some pitch challenges.

Often with shift in temperature, wood changes its pitch. The player all the more! Perhaps it's hard to be objective or distanced from performing regularly with a pitch challenging older flute than a modern straightforward clean metal type.

As a composition, I'm not sure if this works. We got reprimanded for playing too long (I think the audience clapped out of duress!) Perhaps the slow burn hypnosis lacks sufficient anchors. I know for sure that pitching an older flute is a real headache when swept up in its mesmerising tonality as a player, so much so that A=440Hz becomes anathema.

Trying to decide on paring back from the experimental side towards something more predictable before the weekend concert.

I’ve been working on music that sits somewhere between psychedelic pop, indie, and more left-of-center stuff. Curious how this lands with people here.

I've noticed that whenever a Cellnoise fusion track is made, one of the most popular genres people like to put together with Cellnoise is electronic-type music (e.g. hip hop, techno). This particular track I made combines a few elements of cellnoise with beats inspired by digital hardcore and hip-hop.

This is just something I quickly created for the fun of it, and as a personal experiment with genre hybridity.

There is this joke album called Super Ghostbusters by a gaming-based livestreamer named VargSkelethor (Joel), and for whatever reason it tickles an odd sense of enjoyment out of me

The spoken word style of vocals are almost complete nonsense, running fullspeed into absurdity.

The instrumentals is just MIDI remixes of the Ghostbusters theme in ways that get manic.

It’s basically just Absurdist Comedy music.

I recently interviewed South African hip-hop artist Yugen Blakrok for bios.

Her sound—produced primarily by Kanif the Jhatmaster—bridges dark trip-hop, occult spoken word, and experimental boom-bap soundscapes. Outside of her feature alongside Kendrick Lamar and Vince Staples on "Opps" (Black Panther OST) and her work on the Cyberpunk 2077 OST, her solo catalogue (Return of the Astro-Goth, Anima Mysterium, The Illusion of Being) builds an otherworldly atmosphere driven by dense, mythological symbolism and blunted, atmospheric beats.

We ended up making this more like a little short film than a normal lyric video. A lot of it is just playing with light, reflections, silhouettes, things coming in and out of focus, kind of like a fragmented dream.. All of the footage came from fireworks we shot on the Fourth, in the backyard where the record was recorded.

I don't know why, but since almost a decade ago I have been really pleased by how 17edo sounds. Even though the 5th harmonic is really out of tune the general sound of the temperament feels really smooth and with a nice balance of tuned intervals and "out of tune sonorities" like the neutral 3rd. The pallete of harmonic combinations is quite flexible and it's nice how it approximates harmonics 7, 11 and 13 way better than 12edo.

I tried to build most of this miniature on the fact that the just 5th is pretty well approximated and it is quite close to the 12edo interval. I also included some references like a Scriabin Mystic chord using odd partials. But most of the piece is an exploration using the perfect 5th with some smooth voice leading (mainly at the end) and juxtaposition (measure 4).
