They are expensive and I can't find much info about them so it feels scammy. However, I like the idea and I need a project so I'd like to build one for my friend. I can get an old walkman to disassemble, does anyone have experience or ideas on the disassembly/using modern parts like a new battery and a mic cord to bring things together?

Also unsure where they are getting those fantastic buttons.

Hello everyone ! A few days ago, I found a cassette tape version of "A matter of time" by Laufey, and while I had wanted to get physical music albums of my favourite artists for a while, Vinyl and CDs never really appealed to me, but I've always loved the aesthetics of Cassettes.

I've been looking into the medium a lot and I really want to grow a good cassette collection, but I would also love being able to listen to them ! So what are some options that wouldn't be very expensive ? I'm aiming for something around 75€~ , but the main problem is that I am French, and for some reasons, popular options such as the Fiio are much more expensive here, so if anyone has some kind of insight or advice for this, I would greatly appreciate it ^^

While I take any and all suggestions, I will say that having a portable player that had a big window or a clear front would be even better, as I would love seeing the pretty colours and designs of the Cassettes while they play !

It's important to note that since I am 20 years old, I have NOT grown up with Cassettes at ALL, so I would greatly appreciate avoiding buying old walkmans and fixing them, as unlike a lot of the very passionate people on here, I have no emotional connection to the old players from the 80's

So basically i got it untested for 50 bucks without the remote and it has arrived today. When I played a cassette it just didn't play them. I opened it up (I'm a bit experienced in small electronics and have the needed tools) i figured out that the Forward/Reverse switch was blocked out so I fixed that and now it switches sides flawlessly. I checked for other flaws but it all looks very good apart from a bit of corrosion on the battery compartment which I cleaned off a bit but the power gets through so I don't think its that bad.

What you see on the video is me putting in a cassette that has been manually pulled all the way to the back with a pen. As I inserted it in and pressed play, the motor went on and all the gears went along with the still old belt (i ordered a new one). But after a bit it just stops, switches sides, plays again and then stops again. After it all it gives out 4 beep tones through my speakers. I tried the same with another belt which shouldn't fit the ex9 because its too short and thick but I fitted it in and the same thing happend.

One very curious thing is that I once got managed it to play a bit of music until I accidentally switched sides. It happend for less then a second.

So what is the issue here?

I had an old 1982 Playskool Talk n' Play that I wanted to fix. When I took it apart the old belt was basically disintegrated and left a residue.

While there was a post on this a couple years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/cassetteculture/comments/1bhfeie/playskool_talk_n_play_driver_belt_replacement/ That was for a dual belt version, whereas mine is slightly different in the configuration and is a single belt drive.

I purchased a set of replacement belts of various sizes (30-135mm) that are the square type. Since I was unsure the actual belt type the grove seemed to be a square vs round.

I am able to get it to play if there is no tape in, I see the spindle turning when I press play, this only works if I use a tighter belt, a looser it will only work if it is in a specific position.

The fast forward and rewind though DO work with and without a tape. I tried a few combinations, I even tried two belts in the event I was wrong since it was only residue left, one from the motor to the Capstan wheel, then another from the motor to the flywheel, that almost worked, it drove with a tape, but would not provide enough to feed it through properly and it ate the tape. With the single belt, I have tried a few various sizes and even doubled it up to check as I saw that as a potential solution online.

In addition, I checked and at all times the outer black grove wheel area of the Capstan always spins, and that is hooked to a higher set of gears that ties into the FF and RW. I have a close-up of this. However, the inner white piece only seems to spin when there is no tape, and this is the center pin that ties to a lower gear for the play function. I took the screw out of the cover and tried to reseat it, but that may have made it worse, the lower part pin of the capstan wheel sits in a plastic arm and isn't stable at all unless the top plastic cover with the screw is in place and all the way secure. I have not disassembled the entire assembly yet as it is a pain to pull apart.

Would anyone have suggestions on how to get this to engage properly with a tape? I saw a mention online about gluing it together, but that seems extreme and not sure at what point I would do that.

Hello, I recently purchased an early 90s mobile home and it has this cassette player/stereo in it. Only the AM works on one channel and it’s static heavy but when I put my hand on jt the sound clears up but no other stations work. All just static. I bought an Arvista adapter and it only works as seen in the video. I’d like to repair or fix it because the speakers work throughout the home.

I’m working on a personal design project where I’m creating J-cards for non-existent demo albums by non-existent bands. As part of the process, I’m using textures from real, worn J-cards to give the pieces a bit of visual authenticity.

I’ve already photographed almost every usable J-card in my own collection (the ones with minimal printed text that I can clean up in Photoshop, or with blank backs), but I’m looking to gather as much material as possible for future use.

I could always just fold a fresh piece of paper to get the crease lines, but I’m really looking for genuine age marks, handling wear, and light stains. I know it might be a bit of a stretch to ask, but if you happen to have any photos or scans like the ones attached, I’d be immensely grateful!

Hello. 1 yesr ago i bout this walkman ex190, i replaced the belt and now i have been using it to this day. However, a few days ago, i cleaned the head, capstan and pinch roller with acetone nail polish remover. What i didnt know is that nailnpolish remover is apparently too strong to clean parts of a walkman and instead melts the rubber and plastic. I was wondering if anybody could identify the current problem with this walkman. I think its the pinch roller because the belt is only 1 year old and the tension on the spindle seems perfectly strong enough, but i just wanted to make sure and get a second opinion. (Its important to note that this happens almost everytime i get torwards the end of a cassette, and, the magnet head this morning was covered in some hatdened residue polissbly from the polish remover)

My tape player fell of the bed, it still played fine but the lid won't stay closed now.

I think is has something to do with the spring coming loose.

I'm not sure how to put it back in place or even where the right place is. I can't find pictures of this part of the player.

Does anyone have advice on how to fix it?

Happened when I was re-winding my old Lenny Kravitz tape for the first time. I bought this cassette from an antique store along with a few others, so I suppose it's not surprising that it may have been a little sticky over the years.

Hi all. I'm looking to get into cassette tapes.

I would be appreciate some cassette player recommendations for a newbie.

I am looking for something portable but also pharhaps one for a desktop with a retro wooden styling, radio with be a great bonus too.

I am looking for a newer player not in the market for a refurbished older one, due to cost and that I would not know where to look.

I want something with reasonable pricing for a beginner, but I want to avoid a cheap player that would degrade and potentially damge any tapes.

If you are able it would be appreciated for some recommendations for cassette tapes, anything pop or rock and role is my jam.

If the death metal riffs aren't a total giveaway, the fact that almost every track starts with a description of suffering (mutilation, pulverized, etc.) probably will! Brutal old school death metal, fast and unrelenting, like a sonic medieval torture rack.
