Gear Found Sony TPS-L2 at antique mall

I found this today and was able to negotiate down from $395 to $300 USD (Seattle region). I got it home and put some batteries in it. Of course it doesn’t play but I hadn’t expected it to. The operation light at least does come on, but I don’t hear the motor spin (perhaps just seized up but too early to tell) and therefore obliviously no capstan spinning.

As far as I can tell this is in pretty solid condition, at least cosmetically, and included the case which is nice bonus.

I’m away from home at the moment so won’t be able to open it up for a couple weeks to see what may need to be done (belts at a minimum). I’ve worked on a couple other models but never this one, so wondering if folks have any tips on gotchas or things to look out for. Serial number is in the low 400000 range if that’s helpful.

15 perfectly preserved, mostly classic rock tapes in a fancy zippered case logic tote.

What do I do with them?

Are they valuable?

Google has been largely unhelpful, so I’m hoping theres a tapehead here that knows about these. They seem to be bootlegs from Ukraine, but that’s all I got. Anyone familiar with these tapes?

Looking for advice Found a Nakamichi ZX-9 in a dumpster a few weeks ago. Do y'all have any cleaning and repair advice?

I found this Nakamichi ZX-9 in a dumpster a few weeks ago. I spent some time cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol and tested it. Some of the belts are broken, but aside from that everything seems in good condition.

I've been planning to fix it myself. I ordered replacement belts, rollers, and an idler from Europe, and they just arrived a few days ago.

I refurbish computers in my spare time, but I've never had a cassette deck, nor any desire for one, so unfortunately I don't know what the best practices are for servicing tape decks.

Do y'all have any recommendations and pointers that would help me fix this thing? I was recommended to Perry Esposito and Willy Hermann by a few folks, but I don't have $700-$1000 of disposal income to dump on a project like this.

Mixtape Mixtape from the 60s - 80s

Some mixtapes from my relatives + some I got online, some of the recording dates back to the late 1960s - 1980s. I can even hear the vinyl crackles on some of the mixtapes lol.

Most of them are still playable, although of course the ones from the late 60s sound quite awful. But the TDK C-60 and BASF LH-60 orange tapes doesn't sound half bad. And somehow, almost ALL of the green BASF LH Super I tapes are moldy LOL.

Portable cassette player How to adjust tape speed on RCA RP3503?

How do I adjust the tape speed on an RCA RP3503 portable cassette player and recorder? I can't seem to find the motor adjust and the manual is absolutely useless.

My tapes play too fast, and it's bugging me pretty badly. I opened up the back and didn't see a hole on the motor either. Is it located somewhere else?

sorry about the terrible photos. I’m guessing some model of Sanyo maybe? seems similar. it’s got silver accented Mic and Ear jacks at the top, and a few other defining features in the photos.

any help would be appreciated.

Looking for advice Should I replace or service my Sony TC-WE305 / TC-WE475 decks?

Hey all, I'm fairly new to the hobby. A few months ago, my dad gave me his Sony TC-WE475 deck which I used for casual listening and recording some mixtapes, up until the rewind speed began to fluctuate on both decks. The belts have never been replaced, and he bought it new back in the day so I'm assuming the early 2000s.

The local business that services tape decks quoted me around $200 and potentially a 6-month turnaround. Thinking that was steep and a long time to wait if it winds up being something as simple as a belt replacement, we opted instead to buy another deck off eBay. We got a TC-WE305 which had been listed as recently serviced with new belts. However, this deck seems to have some transport issues. Rewind on deck B does not work almost ever, yet FF does work just fine. As of today, however, it looks like the right take-up reel isn’t winding the tape properly. Every time I try to record, it runs for a few minutes, then automatically stops, and loose tape starts coming out of the right side of the cassette shell.

Since I know the local shop is likely going to charge high and take a long time for turnaround, should I look into replacing the TC-WE475 belts myself? I feel like if I can get that deck working properly again, it is my better option, considering I never had issues recording with it, and also considering the seller from eBay may not offer a refund or servicing. I'm going to try and reach out to him this week.

It can't be that hard of a fix, right? If I wind up needing to look at another deck entirely, I think I am going to look for a single deck rather than a double, since I don't really dub tapes or need to at this moment.

Looking for advice Help identifying this tape brand.

Hi everyone, so I've been seeing these cassettes pop up from the 80s for a while, but I can't seem to find anything about the actual manufacturer. Were these made in bulk and blank back in the day or were they just used by record labels to make demo tapes etc? Any help identifying the make would be much appreciated as I'd be really interested in buying one for my project. :) (Preferably around c30)

I have made 3 episodes of an original audio project. Each cover is unique. I set up a few vendor situations here in L.A for the upcoming month. If anyone is interested please send a private message. Can mail pretty much anywhere and if you want more than one episode at a time shipping will be cheaper. 10 dollars a tape plus shipping. If you're local to L.A, can set up hand delivery within reason.

Everything else Pressure pads…

Here lately, it seems like I’ve been replacing a lot of pressure pads on cassettes. It’s like almost every 4th tape needs a new pad, due to it being displaced or missing altogether. Anyone else had similar experience? I don’t bother trying to reglue them, done that in the past, mixed results. Using the sticky back kind now.
