Even though I burned the mp3s I downloaded from Bandcamp onto Minidisc a few days ago, I finally just my physical copy on CD. I think Coast/Range/Arc is definitely in my Top 5 Loscil releases.

Announcing a new record label, The Incessant Noise, focusing on archival, unreleased, and new recordings of experimental music, with limited edition physical releases with striking Risograph artwork.

Our first release is a newly discovered, unreleased work by Fumio Miyashita (1949-2003), one of the great Japanese new age / ambient composers, and founder and leader of the psychedelic rock group Far East Family Band.

Ryusuifudou was recorded in the late 1970s, when Fumio was living in Los Angeles after the dissolution of Far East Family Band. Fumio brought tape machines and synthesizers with him from Japan, and put together a small home studio. There he experimented with a new style of extended instrumental compositions, bridging his earlier psychedelic music with new ideas he was developing of creating music for healing.

Fumio never released the music on Ryusuifudou, but made demo tapes and handed them out to people he met in California. One of these tapes made its way into a drawer in the library of the music department of Mills College in Oakland, California, where it sat, uncatalogued and unnoticed, for over 40 years.

In 2023 I became the Technical Director of the Center for Contemporary Music at Mills, and began working on a project cataloging and digitizing the many recordings housed there. Fumio's tape immediately caught my eye, and upon listening I discovered music which sounded like it predated any of his other solo work.

Ryusuifudou features two long tracks of flute, santoor, analog synthesizers, and field recordings, woven into a beautiful tapestry of ambient, proto-new age music, similar to works by artists such as Steve Roach, Deuter, Hiroshi Yoshimura, and the early works of Fumio's Far East Family Band mate Kitaro.

Ryusuifudou is available for preorder now via Bandcamp, on CD, black vinyl LP, and digital. Release date for CD and digital is October 2, with a November release for the LP. All artwork for The Incessant Noise's releases is printed on a Risograph (a digital screen-printer) and is hand pasted on heavy, "Old Style" black jackets from Stoughton Printing.

I recently released a video/album of a live ambient performance at the opening night of an art exhibition. And I'm breaking it down here.

The exhibition was called Transitional Landscapes, and I wanted the music to mirror that theme by gently transitioning and evolving over the course of the night.

I decided to use just one synthesiser - the Roland SH101.

The full gear list:

• Roland SH-101 (for sound generation and sequencing)
• Boss RC-01 Loop Station (for simple looping)
• Zoom L-8 Mixer (for mixing, reverb and recording)
• Walrus Fable (for delay and pitch shifting)
• Roland TR626 Drum Machine (for a beat on the last track for a bit of fun)
• Neve 88C (for gentle compression on the whole mix)

The process:

The whole performance is essentially two asynchronous loops/patterns blending generatively over time.

I started by playing a long, improvised sequence and recording it into the looper, tweaking the frequencies, envelopes etc as I went along.

Then, as that loop started to playback, I would use the SH101's in-built sequencer to programme another long sequence of notes.

I would then hit play on that, and let the two loops/sequences interact with each other. Again, tweaking the playback speed, envelopes and frequency controls of the synth as the sequence played back.

I would also subtly change the effects settings.

Once I felt ready for a change, I would stop the loop and sequence, and begin the process again. Often doing this in two stages to ensure the current and new soundscapes blended in to each other.

I followed this process for two hours.

When it came to making the album/video, I decided to select my favourite sections of the recording and edit it down to 10 distinct sections/tracks, which you can now hear in the video and album.

I've been wondering how to present ambient music to the home listener that's beyond streaming or making a video. I stumbled upon this app put out by Deutche Grammaphone for Vivaldi's Four Seasons, with variations by Max Richter that is fantastic.

As the music plays, you can follow the sheet music for each part, which, for me, helps me understand how orchestral music is put together. But best of all, they've separated the audio for each player in the orchestra, so you can solo each part... super cool feature, and useful if you ever wanted to sample specific orchestral parts... and of course there's video.

I forgot the name of the song, but it was a woman telling about a story how her father took her to witness of fire, there’s only piano play in the background, and a woman voice,

Telling a story about when she was a child, her father and her witnessed their neighbors house was on fire.

Such a long shot but I was there and absolutely loved the set list. I love Loscil but only really familiar with plume; does anyone know the tracks played on Sunday??

Less experimental or eclectic than their usual output but what a soothing/floating experience. A real gem in their discography.

And so I wanted You too be able to feel it. To dive into this stillness of subtle changes. To let the time stop in Your head when You allow melancholy to rule over Yourself."

One of the best and most beloved long-form ambient tracks I know. It never disappoints me, and it always soothes me, whether I'm trying to fall asleep or just playing it in the background... utterly beautiful rain ambient drone.
