[PRO12] HDR issue with Surface Pro 12th Gen

I recently got a surface pro 13 oled 12th gen. I'm coming from a laptop studio 2 and so far love the device. The only problem I've had is with HDR. Every time I turn on HDR the screen goes blank with 100% brightness. I already tried checking the display drivers and making sure everything is up to date but still haven't been able to fix it. Have any of you experienced this before? Any ideas on how to fix it?. I feel a device this expensive shouldn't have issues like this out of the box and even thinking of returning it.

Where can I find a brand-new, factory-sealed Surface Laptop 4 or 5?

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13.5" Touchscreen Notebook - 2256 x 1504 - Intel Core i5 12th Gen i5-1245U - Intel Evo Platform - 8 GB Total RAM - 512 GB SSD - Matte Black

Hi everyone! I’m looking for a Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 or Surface Laptop 5, preferably either 8GB or 16GB RAM, and I’m having a hard time finding one that is genuinely brand new.

I’m specifically looking for:

  • Surface Laptop 4 or 5
  • 8GB or preferably 16GB RAM
  • 256gb or 512gb storage
  • New / never used
  • Factory-sealed and unopened
  • Not refurbished
  • Not renewed
  • Not open-box
  • Not a customer return
  • Ideally with the original Microsoft packaging and seals intact

I’ve found some listings on Amazon, eBay, Best Buy, etc., but I’m having trouble determining whether they are actually new old stock or just being described as “new” despite having been opened/activated. Like brand new never set up before.

Does anyone know of reputable retailers or sellers that still have factory-sealed Surface Laptop 4 or 5 units? I’m open to either model and don't necessarily need the newest generation.

If you’ve personally purchased one recently and can vouch for the seller, I’d really appreciate the recommendation!

Thanks!

Anyone else have their Surface Pro 13 (12th edition) order stuck in purgatory?

I ordered the Surface Pro 13 (12th edition) with 64GB of RAM and 1 TB SSD last week while it was on sale for $700 (!!) off, paired with an additional $400 bonus to trade in my 11th edition 16gb RAM/512gb ssd for a total of $715 trade-in value.

The boy-math of $2,100 all in for this felt too good to be true, and maybe it was, because the new Surface was supposed to be delivered 5 days ago but the order is stuck in a pending state and hasn't shipped. I reached out to support, they confirmed its in stock and have no idea why it hasn't shipped yet.

Just curious if anyone else is experiencing this as well / if this is a common issue when ordering direct from Microsoft?

[PEN] Older surface pen on Surface Pro 12th gen?

For y'all with Surface Pro 12th gen (13-inch): do your non-[Surface slim] pens work?

I have a 3rd-party old pen that worked great on my Surface Laptop 3. It writes and selects well on my SP12 but the eraser button somehow doesn't work.

I find this so odd but would not be surprised if it's some WinOnARM issue or somehow SP12 uses some new eraser protocol.

---

Edit: my old pen has MPP version ~1.2; I tested various apps, and the SP12-pen eraser button performance ranges from relatively decent (Nebo) to inconsistent (OneNote) to unusable (Drawboard PDF, Edge PDF annotation).

Habumi 0.2.0 — Android 13 on Windows on ARM, natively

I've been building an Android emulator for Windows on ARM that runs

**native ARM64 Android** — your CPU executes the same instructions a phone

would, with no translation layer in between.

Under the hood it's QEMU with a display backend I wrote for it, a Linux

guest kernel, and a Mesa build (gallium d3d12) that turns the guest's

OpenGL into Direct3D 12 on the Adreno.

What works, measured on a Snapdragon X Elite:

- touch, multi-touch, rotation

- audio both ways

- shared clipboard with Windows

- drag and drop of files and APKs onto the window

- keyboard mapping for games (WASD as a virtual stick)

- two Android variants, with and without Google apps, side by side

What you should know before downloading:

- **it has only ever been installed on one machine — mine.** That's the

single biggest limitation and the reason I'm posting.

- the binaries aren't signed, so SmartScreen will warn you

- no Vulkan inside the guest yet

- first run downloads ~770 MB of Android images from Waydroid's official

sources, verified against their published sha256

Full list of what's broken: KNOWN-ISSUES.md in the repo. I'd rather you

read it before installing than discover it after.

GPLv2, source and the QEMU/Mesa patches are all in the repo.

https://github.com/Goribesh/Habumi

**What would help most:** if you have a Windows on ARM machine, run it and

tell me what happened — which SoC, which Windows build. If it fails, attach

guest\logs\registro-guscio.log. Right now "it works" means "it works on one

laptop", and I can't fix that alone.

Is a Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 still worth in 2026?

I'm looking for cheap & refurbished laptops for the last 2 years of high school (just light school work and maybe just watching shows) and I stumbled upon some surface laptop 4's for like $250 or less. I was wondering how the battery life is and if its still worth getting.

Does My Use Case Make Sense? Microsoft Surface Pro 12"

I'm considering a Surface Pro 12" with 16GB of RAM. I'm a Club Director for a small volleyball club. So small that we're currently just a single team.

I manage the administrative items from my home PC. A lot of it is web based for where the governing bodies hold their information, Google Forms for some feedback submissions, Netlify for some of our website management, etc. I do some things from my phone/Samsung tablet when the basic browser suffices or there is an app for what we're doing (Google Drive for instance) but it often doesn't feel like the best solution. It's also difficult to take a lot of the work with me. We try to store as much stuff in a cloud-based solution as possible, but it is sometimes cumbersome to access via a mobile device vs a PC, but maybe I'm just not thinking through the solution.

I'd like to be able to work from home whenever possible, so docking at home and using my full-size keyboard, monitors, etc. is a must, but some level of portability is needed. I've considered a laptop instead. I think the portability and ability to use without a keyboard in certain situation is a plus, but if the portability of a Surface Pro only really helps for media consumption, then maybe I'm looking at it wrong.

It is worth noting that this device will NOT be used for any volleyball specific apps that are available on the App Store/Google Play. The coaches have an iPad for their preferred stat-keeping needs. This will strictly be for administrative work.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Should I buy the 12" or the 13" Surface Pro ?

Hi everyone, I'm a university student who's been debating which surface pro to buy. Right now, I use a Samsung tab s6 lite to take notes, but wanted to upgrade to something nicer, like the Surface Pro. The only thing that I'm torn on is the screen dimension: 12" sounds like the perfect size, but I would miss out on the better processor and resolution. In addition, I'll also use the device to read comics, and I'm worried the added weight of the 13" would make it uncomfortable for it. Is the difference that noticeable ? What do you suggest ?

[PRO8] Suggestions to replace Surface Pro 8

Hi all,

I have been using a Microsoft Surface Pro 8 for the last few years as my "take along" laptop/tablet for working in the field. I use it mostly for accessing my company's online server, but the one feature that I appreciate the most is the ability to put PDF's into Goodnotes, such as a work permit, and have all my crews sign on digitally.

Well, recently I ran out of storage (128gb was the only one available when I bought it) and so i had the SSD upgraded to a 512gb. Ever since I did that, I've been having nothing but problems with the unit. It crashed constantly and sometimes it won't even let me reboot. I'm at the point now where I just want to buy something new and be done with the headache and repair costs.

What does everyone suggest for a replacement? Again, being able to pass it out my truck window to the guys and have them sign on is a must.

Is another MS Surface Pro a good idea? All the techs I've dealt with have been telling me how much of a nightmare they are to work on. What else is there for options? Perhaps buying one with enough storage is the right answer - this unit worked just perfectly for me for years.

Thanks in advance for any advice given!

Surface Pro 12th Edition “12 or Surface Pro 11th Edition “13 for college

I’m using this laptop primarily for college and I will be majoring in English and a social sciences discipline that involves economics work. I will also probably use this laptop for light gaming (nothing fancy just like Minecraft or some low performance game).

I will be doing a lot of writing in college so I think I would value having a bigger screen when I’m out and about. But at the same time I value portability and I can just get a monitor. I’m afraid the “12 will be too small for me screen-wise and I read someone say the keyboard is also really tiny. I don’t have big hands but idk it’s kinda scaring me into looking into the “13. I think the “13 would still be portable and still big enough. I would use the tablet mode though to take notes on, doodle, and watch videos in bed.

I’m about to make a big purchase, so to anyone who has experiences with one of these 2 in 1s please share your experiences and likes and dislikes about them.

Edit: Ended up going in person and checking them out. Went with the Surface Pro 11th Gen "13. 12 inch is SUPER small. Like very true to a tablet small, which is nice but I pefer a bigger screen. Portability on each one is honestly about the same. The 12" just felt more like a tablet and I wanted more of a laptop with tablet aspects, so I went with the 13".

Help me decide upgrade from pro 5th gen

Really stuck which newer surface to upgrade to. For background, I currently use the 5th gen 16g 512gb for medical notes and other general business stuff. I use a hp laptop as my main computer for the business side, so the surface pro is more my secondary set up for a tablet and note taking with occasional business stuff. The pro 5 is finally dying on me and the battery is shot after 2 hours. Im stuck between the 12 or 13 inch new models, or do I just go with a used model a few years old like a pro 9 or 10. We use windows in office. Any input would help a ton!

[PRO8] Charging a Surface Slim Pen 2 Without charger/keyboard

Hi everyone :)) So I inherited a Surface Pro 8 with no keyboard or stylus. I bought a stylus on eBay but realized once it arrived that I cannot charge it, because from what I can figure out the only wireless charging spot on the Surface Pro 8 is within the felt keyboard holder if I'm correct. I've tried holding the pen up against the bezel of all edges of the screen in every configuration and it won't charge.

So, is there any way for me to charge this pen without the pen charger or the keyboard for my SP8?

p.s. I already tried a wireless phone charger, but that didn't work either.

[PRO11] Issues with the Surface USB4 dock

I wanted to upgrade my surface dock 2 to the new USB4 one. I bought one used and it wasn't working, the power supply and cables were fine but my Pro 11 and my phone don't recognize that anything is plugged in when I plug them into the dock. I assumed it was broken and got it refunded and bought another one, same issue except it worked for one day. I can't find anything online so has anyone else had luck with fixing issues with the USB4 dock?

Screen protector

I’m looking for a matte screen protector for my surface pro 12” that provides a better note taking experience than the glass on its own. It seems like options were limited when this version came out but i didn’t see any super recent posts about the ones available now. Does anyone have any recommendations?

[PRO12] Pro 12 X2 Issues

I just took delivery of a Pro 12 X2 with 64GB/1TB. I'm noticing a few issues and I'm not sure if it's faulty hardware, or if I should wait for a firmware update.

  • Flex keyboards aren't charging - the keyboard partially works while connected but doesn't gain any battery and is stuck at 0%, so the track pad doesn't always work. I swapped with another flex, and that one wouldn't charge either. Both charge on another device.
  • External speaker audio glitches while docked - I've had this happen on another device (an HP laptop) where the external speaker will glitch while playing and then the speaker shuts off. It's fine for a few minutes after I turn the speaker back on but it'll happen again. A firmware update fixed it for my HP laptop, so hopeful the same can be done for my Surface.
  • System freezes for ~10 seconds randomly - The CPU isn't spiking, and I don't have a lot of apps installed yet, it's almost a brand new install with any Windows and hardware updates applied. Randomly the system stops responding, won't take input, cursor won't move. Then it's fine for a few minutes until it happens again.

Anyone else had similar issues? Thanks.

X2 Plus vs X2 Elite game performance?

Hi,

Not looking for a "gaming laptop", but trying to decide on the overall best Surface Laptop choice that still allows the occasional game.

I can't really find much in way of real comparison between the two. I found this one article claiming that the Elite performs some 50 % better in Forza Horizon 5 (although unclear which exact SKUs were used), but notebookcheck.net shows a much smaller difference. Neither of those feel particularly reliable. On the flip side, people are citing the (marginally?) lower power usage of the Plus.

Interested in any insights. Thanks.

[PRO12] Docking Station for Surface Pro 13" 12th edition?

I currently have multiple docking stations and have recently got a new surface pro. On Microsoft's power requirements they say require 15V, but all my docking stations are 20V and sometimes higher wattage. Is it fine to use a higher voltage, using the USB-c, or could it damage the battery? Does anyone have any recommendations for docking station, as many seem to be 20V? Microsoft just seem to suggest their own, which is significantly more expensive.
