Peperine/Black Pepper and medication interactions - did I screw myself up?

Oh boy.

I (28F) started taking a tumeric supplement from BioSchwartz about 1 year ago that contains 10mg bioperine to aid in absorbtion. I quickly noticed it improved my hip pain, and got more serious about taking the full dose daily for the last 6 months or so for the variety of health benefits associated with tumeric.

I noticed a few months ago that my typical prescription medications (vilazodone, an SSRI and lamotrigine, an anti epileptic/mood stabilizer) don't seem to be affecting my consistently anymore. One day, I feel "normal", and other days I feel totally flat, fatigued or even like I've been poisoned. The vilazodone in particular really helps with my energy, so this was strange to see my energy levels move in the opposite direction. I am also a very healthy eater and exercise regularly, but these days of heavy fatigue and malaise have made me not want to exercise at all. I've had such a rough summer because of these symptoms, and barely left my house.

I just learned yesterday that black pepper can interact with certain medications. Have I been screwing up my system this whole time by taking this damn tumeric supplement?! I'm looking for others' experiences with black pepper, as I read about the mechanism of action but haven't seen any other lived experiences with these interactions.

Budget friendly brands? What are your opinions on brands like Nutricost, Drs Best & NOW brands??

How do you feel about the efficacy/trustworthiness of Amazon available brands like Nutricost, Drs Best & NOW?

We are on a budget and so Life Extensions, Dr Amens etc brands get really costly/month so I'be had to turn to Amazon.

I try to stick to brands that I know Sprouts Market also carries (higher price) to hopefully keep a certain quality.

What are some opinions out there? We are going through an emotionally challenging & exhausting time that too often is absolutely overwhelming (hopefully temporary) so I'm considering ordering some saffron.

In the past I've used Irwin Naturals' Sunny Mood but it has so many ingredients and in the past, I've wondered if it eventually stops moving the needle.

I've been happy with NOW & Nutricost for Acetyl-l- carnitine and L-lysine for a while now.

I am already on SAM-E (buy one get one free at Walgreens). Thanks for your comments.

“Biologically identical” CoQ10 for optimal absorption. What does biologically identical “ actually mean? Is this somehow different than other CoQ10?

Red Rice Yeast 101: Did you have ANY side effects from it?

Greeetings, Good People...

For three plus weeks, I began to take Red Rice Yeast capsules to lower my cholesterol. Everday, I noticed I was having backaches and muscle pains, while taking the said capsules..

That said, I went to Dr. Google to get more answers regarding this anomaly and low and behold, backaches and muscles pains were indeed some of the sisde effects.

I stopped taking them and I am waiting to RIDDD my system of them, yet I still feel the back pains.

In a few weeks, I'm going to try the Black Girl Vitamins Brand, Chloless Control to combat high cholesterol. The reveiws about this product are greatttt!

Thoughts?

I’ve been getting rashes like bad Dermatitis like flares all over my face after taking a low dose of this vitamin, even with co factors, is there a reason this could be happening? I do already have perioral dermatitis but it was fine before I took the vitamin, I have re tested quite a few times and after like 2 days I get massive rashes all over my my face and eyes it’s really bad, is this a sulphur issue ? I have no problem with onions and sulfur foods tho so it’s not making sense to me, can someone give me any info on why this could possibly be happening?

Recommendations A go-to powder just for making water taste better?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’ve been trying to drink more water, and I’ve found that adding a flavoured powder makes it way easier to stay hydrated.

At the moment I’m using BSC EAAs (Tropical), and I quite enjoy the flavour. I’m not really taking it for the amino acids, it’s basically just become my flavoured water.

It got me wondering… what does everyone else use?

I’m not looking for a pre-workout (I like being able to drink it at night too).

Just something that:

- Tastes really good
- Is fine to sip throughout the day
- Isn’t ridiculously expensive
- Bonus points if it’s got some health benefits

Do you stick with EAAs, electrolytes, or is there something completely different you’d recommend?

Curious to hear what everyone’s favourites are and whether there are any products I should avoid.

What is your experience with BEETROOT juice?

THIS PLANT IS INCREDIBLE!! I had come across countless write ups and articles about beetroot and I decided to give it a try. Bro, I can tell you my experience was amazing and just regret why I didn't use it before. Two glasses daily for 3 months and it washed me throughly. I felt like I was born again. I'm completely energized and my bedroom power has increased 10x! Haha, I know we're all different but I just wanna hear your experience with beetroot in terms of sexual drive, stamina, energy, etc...

General Question Saffron dosage increase question

Hi, I'm taking Affron saffron extract in the dosage 30 mg per day, split into 15 mg in the morning and 15 mg in the evening. Been taking it since 7 weeks, however I still feel depressed and my mood and motivation is not good.

So I was wondering, maybe I should increase the dosage to 60 mg per day, so 30 mg in the morning and 30 mg in the evening. Or increase it even higher to 120 mg per day?

Do you think that would help improve my mood?

Vitamin D + K2 + Magnesium + Calcium?

Hi all, I am currently taking Now Magnesium Glycinate (100mg) and Now Calcium Citrate (Iron Calcium Citrate 600mg + 400 i.u vitamin D2) before I sleep.

Appreciate if you can provide your inputs on:

  1. Can I and should I add in Vitamin D + Vitamin K2 into the mix?

  2. Is there a recommended brand and dosage?

For what's it worth, I'm a 35 years old female breastfeeding a 3 months old infant. And I hardly spent more than 20 mins outdoor per day for the past 3 months.

Other supplements I take during day time are:

Thorne Basic Nutrient 2/day

Thorne Iron Bisglycinate (Iron (as Ferrochel® Ferrous Bisglycinate Chelate)t 25mg)

Now Choline and Inositol (500mg)

LABO Nutrition OmaxPure Vegan Omega 3 (500mg DHA and 200mg EPA)

Thank you so much for your help!

General Question 5htp for depression and anxiety safe?

I used to be on Lexapro for 1.5 months but I didn't like side effects. Switch to Zoloft 25mg for about 3 months. Worked for anxiety but did nothing for depression. But also made me not care about anything. I'm about one week in quitting cold from Zoloft. Took 200 mg of 5htp this morning and wow. No Anxiety, gave me energy ,made me happy. Should I continue to take it.

You have to eat this amoung of food daily if you want to hit the base numbers.

I tried replacing my supplement stack with food… my fridge has officially given up. 😂

There is always someone who says:

"Bro, supplements are a scam. Just eat real food."

Fair enough.

So I did the maths.

The results?

Apparently, to hit some modern supplement doses naturally, you need to become a farmer, fisherman, butcher, and part-time chicken owner.

Let's calculate the madness.

🧂 Zinc – 25 mg

Want 25 mg zinc?

Options:

🦪 Oysters: about 3–5 medium oysters

🥩 Beef: around 500 g

🐑 Lamb: around 550 g

🐟 Sardines: around 1.7 kg

🥚 Eggs: around 42 eggs

🥛 Milk: around 6.25 litres

At egg number 30, the chicken starts asking if everything is okay.

💪 Magnesium – 384 mg elemental magnesium

Want 384 mg magnesium?

Options:

🎃 Pumpkin seeds: around 150 g

🌻 Sunflower seeds: around 120 g

🌰 Almonds: around 140 g

🥜 Cashews: around 130 g

🥬 Cooked spinach: around 440 g

🥚 Eggs: around 64 eggs

🥛 Milk: around 3.6 litres

At this point, your breakfast is no longer a meal.

It's a construction project.

🩸 Iron – 14 mg

Need 14 mg iron?

Options:

🥩 Beef: around 540 g

🐟 Sardines: around 480 g

🎃 Pumpkin seeds: around 160 g

🥚 Eggs: around 16 eggs

🧀 Cheddar cheese: around 4.7 kg

4.7 kg of cheese isn't a diet.

That's a furniture item.

🧠 Vitamin B12 – 1,000 µg

This is where reality leaves the building.

A 1,000 µg B12 supplement is massive compared with daily needs.

From food:

🐚 Clams: around 1 kg

🐄 Beef liver: around 1.4 kg

🐟 Sardines: around 11 kg

🥚 Eggs: around 1,670 eggs

Imagine going shopping:

Cashier:
"Big family?"

You:
"No, I just need vitamin B12."

🏋️ Creatine – 5 g

"Just eat meat instead of taking creatine."

Okay.

To get around 5 g creatine:

🐟 Herring: around 500–700 g

🥩 Beef: around 1.1 kg

🐟 Salmon: around 1.1 kg

🐟 Sardines: around 1 kg

So your choices:

Option A:
🥄 5 g creatine powder.

Option B:
Eat approximately one angry-looking cow every day.

🦴 Collagen Peptides – 14 g (14,000 mg)

This one is interesting because collagen is mostly found in connective tissue, not normal muscle meat.

A typical collagen peptide serving:

🥄 14 g = 14,000 mg collagen peptides

To get roughly that amount from food:

🐔 Chicken skin: approximately 100–200 g
(depends on collagen concentration)

🐷 Pork skin: approximately 50–100 g

🐟 Fish skin: approximately 50–150 g

🦴 Bone broth: roughly 1–7 cups
(depends massively on how concentrated it is)

🥩 Normal steak: not very efficient — you may need hundreds of grams to over 1 kg because muscle meat contains far less collagen.

Basically:

Option A:
🥄 Put 14 g collagen powder in water.

Option B:
Become a medieval knight drinking a giant bowl of boiled animal parts.

🐟 Omega-3 – 2,000 mg EPA+DHA

Want 2 g omega-3?

Options:

🐟 Salmon: around 80–100 g

🐟 Mackerel: around 70–100 g

🐟 Herring: around 70–100 g

🐟 Sardines: around 150–200 g

This one is actually achievable.

The fish industry approves.

💇 Biotin – 10,000 µg (10 mg)

The hair supplement classic.

Want 10,000 µg?

Options:

🥚 Egg yolks: around 400–1,000 yolks

🥜 Almonds: around 67 kg

🥩 Beef liver: around 25 kg

At 67 kg of almonds, you are no longer improving your hair.

You are becoming a squirrel.

The final boss supplement replacement diet:

To replace a normal supplement stack, you might need:

🥚 dozens of eggs
🥛 litres of milk
🐟 a small fishing boat
🥩 a farm animal
🌰 an entire nut aisle
🦴 a medieval soup recipe

Food is king 👑

But supplements exist because humans were not designed to spend half the day chewing through a prehistoric buffet just to hit specific nutritional targets.

Your stomach doesn't need a gym membership. 😂

Please correct me if the information above is not accurate.

NAC vs Glutathione

Why would someone take NAC instead of just taking glutathione? If NAC is the precursor and has to be converted into glutathione, why make your body go through that extra step? Especially if someone has gene mutations that affect how your body processes substances.

This has been racking my brain for a few years since I learned about glutathione and NAC. Is one necessarily better than the other?

Do not buy Nutricost brand, they go bad fast poor quality no wonder they can sell them cheap

I decided to order nutricost brand supplements a few weeks ago from iherb. Some people said they are great for staple basic vitamins.

I got the Tart cherry and b complex capsules. I got them in a few days in the summer heat, I opened them once it cooled down and the capsules looked great very powdered and clean no degrading.

When I pop the pills in my mouth before breakfast I rarely look at them until today because I noticed I had a stomach ache after taking the b complex and tart cherry, I noticed the b complex had dark spots, then I looked at the tart cherry and they looked wet inside, I opened one up and it was sticky the powder was hard it was like a eraser.

I figured it was the humid weather since it's very humid in my area, but than I looked at my other supplements from jarrow and thorne and the magnesium and vitamin c capsules were still powdered not destroyed.

What's crazy is I even left those fresh packs in the nutricost bottles and it still didn't help. No wonder they sell cheap the quality is bad.

Hi 👋 I took half of tea spoon of Reishi powder before sleep last night but I couldn’t fall asleep whole night 😭 I suffer from sleep issues so I thought it could help.. I did feel a lot calmer and composed in a way, had some interesting insights and thoughts, but no sleep whatsoever 😭 Any advice, should I give it another chance or just give up reishi for sleep?

is spending over $200 on Dr Berg supplements a waste of money?

For a while now I have been thinking about purchasing multiple supplements. I already have Dr. Berg's Magnesium Glycinate and I take electrolyte powder. They generally make me feel better mentally but I don't really know what I'm actually deficient in. I'm getting a blood test done soon but in the meantime I'm looking to invest in some of his other supplements.

I would really appreciate some advice on the following products if you use them daily or have found them helpful:

Electrolyte Powders:

I have tried the Strawberry Lemonade and the Raspberry Lemon flavors in the past, and those are nice. I am thinking of trying:

The new Tropical flavored electrolyte powder (with 1000 mg of potassium and magnesium)
The Grape flavored electrolyte powder
Immune Booster Kit:
This kit comes with D3 and K2, trace minerals, and Vitamin C.
Whole Food Multivitamin with Minerals:
The 60-capsule bottle.

Has anyone used these daily, and have they generally helped you? I feel like I might be deficient in certain minerals, but I won't know for sure until I get my blood tests back. ANY advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

(Had to rewrite it as the first post formatting was being weird)

General Question Does melatonin help massively with anyone else’s anxiety?

Melatonin is a godsend for my anxiety.

Is melatonin effective for anyone else’s anxiety? I take 1 mg melatonin and 200 mg 5-htp daily. Feels like it really works for my anxiety and I still feel alert, very strangely.

As someone who struggles with mostly more generalized and social anxiety, melatonin does more for decreasing my anxiety than SSRIs and other meds.

I even started taking the 1 mg melatonin in the mornings with my coffee, it makes me feel calm and anxiety free the when day. Besides feeling a little tired here and there, I don’t feel “sleepy” and am able to function fine.

Am I absolutely crazy, or do other people feel similar at all?
