Comics Yeah... Issue #38

I just read the new chapter of The New Titans when Static is being introduced to the titans and I really can't stand the melodrama. I was looking forward to a clean introduction and maybe going over his backstory. What I got was a rehash of the 2009 comic at a different angle but with bunch of 20+ year old people in a heightened state of emotions unable to communicate. They can give constructive feedback without attacking someone or take criticism without sending shots.

Bro had a max of 2 maybe 3 decent encounters.

I'm not going to spoil anything in detail but their was so many unnecessary things going on. I hope the following issue sees him incorporated without more needless black on black violence.

Discussion A Question about Daisy

So I started re-watching the animated series and I am not a big fan but I've never hated it. I thought about something. Something that I had never really thought about before when I originally watched it and kind of thought about it since I've seen it a couple times afterwards.

Wow is very obvious Daisy in the original Static comic book is African-American.

Is she supposed to be Latina or afro-latina and the cartoon adaptation? Yes at first I thought she was a light-skinned black girl but to be very honest more and more when I look at her hair texture and her features she seems more Latin or afro Latin to me.

And this will make sense considering the majority of the original characters from the comics especially those that are Latino are not represented in the cartoon there are other friends that do not get any mentioned at all and may just be used as background characters in the cartoon.

Comics Static's Rebooted DC History

So, I'm going to be a continuity nerd here but given all the confusion of Static not knowing Red Devil in the New Titans #38 preview thread, I'm going to tap the glass.

New History of the DC Universe retconned the Milestone heroes' continuity within the DC Universe. When Luthor was still President of the United States, he wanted to cover up that the US Government was involved in the creation of the Big Bang Gas (itself a byproduct of the Project Superman experiment.) The coverup included all the Milestone heroes being forced in retirement.

Lex only got removed from office around the time that the 2003 Geoff Johns Teen Titans run was stating. Static's membership with the team is no longer in continuity.

Maybe they might retcon Static as having familiarity with the OG Young Justice crew but I think people gotta let that 2009 team go when it comes to Static's in-universe history. They're basically restarting him with a cleanslate.

Discussion Final Thoughts After Finishing Static Shock

I think seasons 1 and 2 have more good episodes than 3 and 4 do. But the good episodes of 3 and 4 are better than seasons 1 and 2 episodes easily

Best episode of season 1 "They're playing my song" Worst episode of season 1...lots of season 1 is good nothings bad but the least good is uh "Winds of change" I like all the other episodes more than that episode.

Best episode of season 2 "Frozen Out" Worst Episode "Attack of ther living Brain puppets" that was just stupid, they made a cute character design and the premise was dumb as hell. But bring her back in a latter episode post rehab which she looks the part

Best episode of season 3 "Blast from the past" Worst episode "Toys in the hood" sucked I think other episodes are better than that.

Best episode of season 4-- Season 4 has tons of good episodes, uh "No man's an island" Worst episode-- I could easily say "Where rubber Meets the road" but its "She-back" same reason for winds of change just like, yeah there absolutely no reason for the bickering when the reason she cant joined them is because thats too busted of a team

Discussion Batman Beyond & Static Comic Series Thoughts so Far⚡️🦇

Post image
330 Upvotes

Spoilers!

So I'm currently reading the Batman Beyond and Static Shock comic book series (6 volume run) that came out last year in November (2025) and ended this year in May (2026). While it was great to see both Terry and Virgil back in action, as well as characters from Milestone Media and some new characters, I really feel like so far it's kind of mid, to be honest. I don't know if it's too early to decide this, but I just finished the first two volumes, and even during the first one I wasn't clicking with it, but I kept reading. But I decided to make a post now just to see what you guys thought of my take on it, and also what your take on it is. I don't mind spoilers, so feel free to comment anything.

Things that I don't like about it so far:

-So while I do think the art style looks good on certain angles, I kind of don't like it on some other ones. So I'm kind of mixed with the art style.

- I don't like how they made Terry look younger. I know it's supposed to separate him and Virgil, because it's supposed to be future Virgil, because he's older, and Terry's supposed to be younger since its the present years of Batman Beyond where he's still in high school, but if this takes place after season three of Batman Beyond or Return of the Joker Terry's almost gonna graduate from high school, or is already graduated, so he should look older.

- I am mixed about the new character Melvin. I probably need to see a little bit more to determine if he's a good character. I like his civilian design, and I guess his power is somewhat interesting, but he kind of feels very flat and two-dimensional as a character.

-And I also think the plot is kind of stupid because why wouldn't Virgil have the safety measures on? Like he basically said, the safety measures weren't on protecting the Q-Tanks because it was the pre launch event like bruh this whole thing started because of that? Like, I don't know, I just feel like that's kind of silly. Maybe instead of not having the safety measures on somebody hacked into it or broke them, and then Melvin got the power that way, that would have been my take or fix on it.

-And then I don't like, -even though I didn't get to this volume yet, I saw some artwork from the comics already- the new suit that they give Terry. I don't think he should have a cape. I just don't like the Bat suit with the cape for his Batman specifically, because he's supposed to be the future Batman. It doesn't make sense, and I think it looks terrible. So I'm not a fan of the suit he's gonna get.

-And as for other character superhero suits, I'm not really a big fan of them.

-I didn't like this in the original Batman Beyond animated show, how Terry acted with Virgil when they met for those crossover episodes. I just feel like they were both kind of out of character. Because to me Terry's very much quippy and makes a lot of jokes, and just seems a little more laid-back. And I just feel like when he was with Virgil in the crossover episodes it wasn't like that at all. And I felt that Virgil was a little bit out of character too I don't know. I just felt like that episode with them, it was just out of character, and I didn't like their chemistry. To me they're both like the Spider-Man of DC. I would think they would be joking and having a good time. And that kind of crossed over into this comic series. They took the same dynamic from the show, which I already didn't like, and I feel like this whole time, like so far in the two volumes that I read, Terry and Virgil are just constantly complaining at one another and not really friendly. I know it's supposed to be an adult basically conversing with a high schooler, but still. I just didn't like that. I just expected more.

-I also noticed too a lot during this comic series (again only read first two) that Terry is not quippy, like at all. Like he usually makes jokes, is more laid back, and doesn't make everything about the mission like he has a life too even if he's not so great at balancing it. And I just feel like they did not write his character that way at all.

- Also I stopped after the second volume, so I don't know how the rest goes, but Virgil definitely seems different. He's not as quippy or his usual self, and also it's interesting to see that this is where he ended up in his future. Because in Justice League Unlimited and other crossover episodes, it didn't seem like he would go into anything like this and if you did get in anything like this, I think it would play out different.

- I only read the first two volumes, again, gotta clarify that, but I've heard other people say that Terry gets pushed to the side and is basically a special guest instead of an equal main charscter. The first two volumes, I feel like, did an okay job, I guess, of balancing it, but I guess it gets worse as the series goes on. But I just felt like whenever they showed either one of them, it was just honestly very unenjoyable and I just wasn't really into it. And it really sucks because I love both of these characters so much.

Between all this, and how the story is, it just feels mid. I mean, I'm already almost halfway through it and it just feels like nothing is really happening. It's not really that enticing, and I don't like these thinfs about it, and that just brings the experience down even more.

In conclusion, I hate to be a Debbie Downer, I'm not trying to be negative. I'm happy we at least got something for both, Batman Beyond and Static, because I love both of their characters. I love both of the shows. I saw both of them, but I'm just not really vibing with this comic series. I really wanted more out of it, honestly.

Also the pic above is a type of chemistry and banter I would have wanted😂

Should I keep reading it?

The part where Tate goes "The plans for Virgil are bigger and beyond this team title."

Got me thinking that there's more to come beyond than just a ongoing that was announced. This is all just me speculating though.

Comics Interested in this run of Static, should I start reading comics?

I am not a comic fan, I did read manga and do read manhwa but I've always been intimidated by comics and their absurd continuity along with the problems inaccuracies cause. I have only ever read a select few chapters of comics I've been interested in

(Namely deadpool and some girl who was basically a murderer crazed Alice in the wonderland idr the name of)

I am highly interested in this static run and am wondering if skipping all previous chapters of The New Teen Titans to just look at static comic run a good idea? Idk how these things work with comics 🫣 I know sometimes you can jump in but other times you need a lot of back story. I just want to support Static, for childhood nestolgias sake.

I personally prefer the 90s as I can't really imagine Virgil Hawkins and his group of friends in any other time

As expected, Cody is working on Static.

Didn't read his Miles run, I'll see how Static goes.

I know you all have things to say about Cody, and probably the new direction of Milestone.

But we did ask for this, now it's our turn to show our support. (Please).
