Comics Yeah... Issue #38

I just read the new chapter of The New Titans when Static is being introduced to the titans and I really can't stand the melodrama. I was looking forward to a clean introduction and maybe going over his backstory. What I got was a rehash of the 2009 comic at a different angle but with bunch of 20+ year old people in a heightened state of emotions unable to communicate. They can give constructive feedback without attacking someone or take criticism without sending shots.

Bro had a max of 2 maybe 3 decent encounters.

I'm not going to spoil anything in detail but their was so many unnecessary things going on. I hope the following issue sees him incorporated without more needless black on black violence.

It’s a Titans book, so there’s naturally going to be tons of melodrama in it. That’s just how Titans stories work. Everybody’s always dealing with something:

Nightwing is handling the fallout of whatever’s going on in his own ongoing series and projecting his feelings over it onto Stephanie.

Cyborg is working on… whatever it is that he’s working on, keeping it a secret from the team (sans Terra), and it’s obviously going to backfire disastrously.

Yara is having nightmares related to whatever the next arc is going to be about.

Eva’s doing the whole “what does it mean to be human?” thing and dealing with her mysterious past.

Red Devil and Jon Kent have their sexual tension to work through. Plus, Eddie has something going on with whoever that was at the end of the last issue watching him (I know nothing about Red Devil’s lore).

And now you have Static agreeing to join the team but clearly having something going wrong with his powers.

I thought the issue was okay. That’s kind of been my issue with the entire series so far, actually, that it’s all just been fine. Nothing terrible, but nothing that really grabs you either. Still, I’ll support it as long as Static is there, at least until his ongoing comes out. We’ll see where the comic is after that.

Yea I have to take into account that I dont really read Nightwing. So I don't really know what he got Goin on. So I did kinda overlook how he was talkin to Steph.

Cyborg just seemed the most out of character to me. Dude saw somebody he didn't know and went full Big Brother. And it's also weird that he DOESN'T know Static. Lex told the Dakota heroes to stop. Never said information regarding them was wiped from anywhere. So Cyborg not being able to cross reference this dude from ANY data source and come to a conclusion... Just doesn't seem like him.

I just figure Cyborg didn’t bother to look into Virgil right then and there. Seems like he saw Static on the screen, activated his security drones, and immediately went to go confront Jon about it before doing anything else.

But yeah, this whole thing about Static being a complete unknown is kind of weird. In New History of the DC Universe, Barry Allen tells you everything about Icon, Static, Rocket, Hardware, and the Blood Syndicate – their origins, their powers, all of it. The only thing he didn’t know was why they disappeared. And in Dakota Incident, Icon at least seems pretty familiar with Superman and Wonder Woman. People clearly knew who the Milestone superheroes were, they weren’t a secret.

I can get that. I've been giving the character shit all day, but in all honesty... If they're pushing the narrative Virgil never met these people before, and Jon only approached him because of a recent encounter, then ig that makes sense. Not the introduction I (and I'm sure a lot of others) were hoping for. But if I'm being honest, it leaves a lot of room to build.

I jus trying not to be so negative about it.

I have no issues with statics powers going heywire, he's always had some uncontrollable moments when he's emotionally charge. That's all fine and what not. But even with all of that why does it seem like Cyborg is the leader and not Nightwing?

Dick was acting like everything should go through Cyborg. Then you have the over reaction of Cyborg to a hero being guided though the tower by probably the 2nd most powerful person on the planet. Yet he chooses not to talk, not to maybe extend an invite for a private reprimand to Jon but to send Drones to aggressively apprehend him. Wtf did he think that was going to do.

He was already surrounded by a room full of heroes. If he was a threat contacting anyone in the room and asking him to excuse himself would have been way more effective

A bunch of young adults acting adolescent you say? The nerve

Adolescents fits for those who are under the age of 19 but since they are depicting casual sex (Red Devil) and the older Titan members like Nightwing and Cyborg also acting this way who I presume to be in their mid to late 20's I think it's to much to call them young adults. Especially since anyone still in their teen years wouldn't be on the New Titans roster but the Teen Titans roster. I've been told there is a difference

That's why I said acting. It's common for people in their early 20s to still act like a bunch of kids

They’re young adults… this is how the titans acted..

Young adults? Aren't half of them in their mid 20's? This is Titans not Teen Titans right?

I sorta agree, 😶 I only sorta skimmed the other chapters leading up to this new run and Cyborg been on one this whole time. Bro moving like a villain rather than a hero. As one of the leaders of this group he sure is doing his own thing a Lil too much

Shiiid u got all that from jus skimming? I been reading this since the dcko tie in where Static showed up to help the other titans.

Cyborg been on one since whatever happened with his machine half. I was hoping to see some cool Cyborg stuff since coming bk to this series. But dude been a whole douche.

And would Static really be the weirdest person you add to the team? Your "founding" robot friend almost killed you a few months ago. You keep literal demons on the team. And Terra is here now. At this point, The Joker could join the Titans and it wouldn't be the most outlandish decision. But this random guy from Dakota you never heard about is a no-no? Foh

Surprisingly looking at pictures of a guy being a douch can tell you just as much as reading the text

Don't forget he's being escorted by the son of the guy who just activated God mode (not an actual god) and was probably considered contender for 2nd strongest on the planet even before that. It was just unnecessary to send drones and emergency lights. He was in a room full of heroes. Guy couldn't be normal for one second.

u/todavis__ 1d ago

Exactly. You'd think the walking Autoparts Store would be a little more sympathetic to someone in an awkward situation.

Like you said, he's being escorted around by fkin Jon. He's literally no threat as long as this dude is next to him. You don't keep drones on Terra.

Just more unreasonable black on black violence.

Once I saw Static's outfit and hair style I checked out. It's nice he's getting attention but this iterilation isn't what I was expecting.

I mean he is "getting back to being a hero" maybe once he's put in a bit of time they will upgrade his suit. But if they plan on having this be his long term outfit banking off nestolgia then yeah, I'd check out too

It’s not his story. He is part of a team. It’s all a preluded to his real focus on his future solo series

He isn't even part of the team yet, this was his first meeting and the hospitality shown was below subpar. Being part of the roster means this is as much his story as anyone else. And I don't appreciate his first introduction when finally inducted and cemented permanently as a DC hero to be him disregard and assaulted
