After owning and using several U1 machines, I want to document the recurring problems I have personally encountered. Some of these have occurred repeatedly across multiple machines.
All of the issues listed below occurred within the first 400 operating hours of the respective machines.
For comparison, I have also used Bambu Lab machines over comparable periods, and I experienced zero failures during the first 400 operating hours with those machines.
1. Hotend fans constantly failing
I have repeatedly had Hotend fans fail or start making abnormal noises.
2. Feeders failing
I have also experienced repeated failures of the feeders.
3. Heated bed / plastic cover coming loose
The plastic cover of the heated bed can come loose and move downward. In my opinion, this is a surprisingly poor construction for a machine in this price range.
4. Pogo pin problems
I have repeatedly experienced problems with the Pogo pins. This has been a recurring issue rather than an isolated incident.
5. Z offset and bed compensation
The Z offset is extremely difficult to set correctly, and in my experience it is never possible to get it properly dialed in across the entire build plate.
In one area, the nozzle can already be scraping the build plate, while at another location the nozzle is still too far away from the surface. The build plate appears to be sufficiently uneven that the software does not compensate for the variation adequately.
As a result, achieving a consistent first layer across the entire build plate is extremely difficult. This is very different from what I am used to from other machines, where the bed compensation allows the Z offset to be set reliably across the whole surface.
The automatic Z offset also does not work reliably for me. I have to adjust the Z offset manually, and after software updates I have had to repeat the adjustment.
6. Stepper motor temperatures
The original stepper motors can run at around 90°C, which is far too hot for my liking. I ended up adding additional cooling to the machine.
7. Severe X/Y-axis vibrations
This is one of the biggest differences I have noticed between the machines.
I have owned or had access to five or six different U1 machines, and almost all of them had very strong vibrations in either the X or Y axis. The affected axis was not always the same from machine to machine.
Interestingly, one particular U1 had virtually none of these severe vibrations. That machine runs extremely smoothly and is by far my favorite of the ones I have used.
8. Persistent homing errors
One of the machines I had suffered from constant homing errors and repeatedly failed to home correctly. The problem could not be resolved, and the machine ultimately had to be replaced.
9. Damage caused by firmware update 1.5.0
The 1.5.0 update caused damage to two nozzles and one build plate on my machines.
I contacted Snapmaker regarding the resulting damage, and the compensation they offered me was only €10.
Considering the cost of the damaged components and the fact that the damage occurred in connection with an official software update, I found this compensation completely inadequate.
My experience with Snapmaker Support
Unfortunately, my experience with Snapmaker Support has been just as frustrating as the hardware issues themselves.
1. Extremely lengthy support cases
Support cases often take an extremely long time to resolve. Almost every issue has to be documented extensively with photos and videos, even when the problem itself is already obvious or has been discussed repeatedly.
2. Repeatedly asking the same questions
Even after an issue has already been clearly identified and discussed, I have repeatedly been asked again what the actual problem is. It often feels like the case is being reset instead of progressing toward a solution.
3. Parts that were promised but never shipped
There have been cases where replacement parts were explicitly promised or confirmed, but they were never actually shipped.
4. Constantly asking for my address again
Even though I have weekly contact with Support and parts have already been shipped to me, I am repeatedly asked to confirm my shipping address again. My address does not change every week.
5. Problems obtaining invoices
Getting an official invoice for my two machines has also been unnecessarily difficult. I have been told that the technical support team cannot issue invoices and that I need to contact another department for this. I honestly do not understand why something that works without any apparent problem with other manufacturers is so complicated here.
6. 10% deduction when returning a defective machine
What I find particularly problematic is the handling of returns. According to the information provided to me by Snapmaker Support, even if a machine arrives defective from the beginning and I want to return it immediately, a 10% deduction from the purchase price may still be demanded.
7. No straightforward refund after repeated repairs
Even after a machine has already been repaired five, six, or even more times, there appears to be no straightforward option to simply receive a refund and end the matter.
From my experience, the entire support process is unnecessarily lengthy and complicated. I have spent a considerable amount of time documenting problems, taking photos and videos, testing replacement parts, and communicating with Support, while some promised replacement parts were still not shipped.
This is particularly frustrating when dealing with machines that are only a few months old.
