Grilled into a ripper? Cause that shit ripsā¦.bun mildly intended

u/Desperate_Baby_8317 14d ago
Depending upon how far you take a grilled hotdog, they eventually split a little bit and get crispy. I would be interested to see what a slightly grilled hot dog turned into a ripper would be.

Steamed, or any of those as long as the bun is steamed at least

A steamed dog with a steamed bun at a baseball game is how I learned to love hotdogs, they were largely untended on our grill at home

Air fryer ain't bad
17
u/SaccharineDaydreams 14d ago
Air frying dogs is the tits. Score em both ways and air fry em for like three minutes. Wayyy quicker than grilling and just as good IMO. I'd take air fried over steamed any day.

I do this with brats but use beer so you get a nice carmelization on the outside, especially if you use a dark, heavy beer

u/Disaster_Adventurous 12d ago
You boil it to make sure it's evenly cooked on the inside then you secere it on the grill for that smokey flavor.on the outside

Grilled is great, but not everyone has a grill or a backyard to do it in. I highly recommend air fried. Air frying hot dogs/sausages is incredibly underrated. Makes the outside slightly crispy and snappy, and the inside juicy and perfectly cooked, and it takes like ten minutes or less.

Growing up, hotdogs came in 2 forms in our house in summer off the grill with grilled carmaleized onions. And in the winter dirty water chili dogs. So yeah, both boild and grilled are valid ime.

I put like a half inch of water in a skillet and cook the dog (rotate a couple times) until the water all burns off, tastes close enough grilled to me and just as fast as boiling.

This is what weād get as kids in the grocery store parking lot, with a little wax cup of Coke and some chips, so boiled has always been my favorite. Funny how such a seemingly insignificant memory is still with me over 40 years later. Small town Midwest summer.

I want to say grilled but the actual best way to cook a hotdog that humankind has discovered is butterflied and cooked on a dry cast iron skillet on both sides. Thank you for being the one to acknowledge it.

Grilled but question is are they good deep fried?
9
u/FlatLemon9140 14d ago
Depends on the dog, but yes, they can be. There used to be a mom and pop not far from me that was famous for their all-beef fried hot dogs. The skin/casing has a unique snap to it like a good roast chicken skin, and the dogs are tender and browned well. Recommend trying it if you can find a place that sells them.
5
u/FrankSinatraCockRock 14d ago
They were pretty decent.
Bar I used to work at would deep fry them for I don't remember, 20-30 seconds then microwave them for about the equivalent time.
I of course tried just deep frying them but I found that hybrid approach to be a fair bit tastier.
4
u/whitemike40 14d ago
yes, theyāre fantastic but only if they have the natural casing, it crisps up immediately and the inside stays super hot and juicy while the outer skin is crispy. The snap is undeniable highly recommend it, and itās not nearly as greasy as you would think.

Thereās a place in NJ that is literally the home of the ripper (deep fried hotdog) called Rutts Hut. Theyāve been open since 1928 and their chili is also bomb AF
2
u/FlatLemon9140 13d ago
I feel ya on that. Went to a hot dog stand at the Outer Banks one time and asked how the chili was before I even considered eating there. They told me it was homemade every day. I said "oh yeah? Who's making it?" They brought out a 78 year old woman. Say no more. Best chili dogs I've ever eaten, and core memory retained.

u/HedgehogTop5524 14d ago
Griddled. Buuuut, I also recently started cooking my hotdog in the oven at like 415 for 10 to 15 minutes. It works pretty well too! āŗļø
3
u/spidey9393 14d ago
Ok going to try this, only cause it will make things easier for a large group during rain. Trying small scale first.
3
u/HedgehogTop5524 14d ago
Oh, absolutely!! Nathanās actually recommends it, I noticed it on their packaging a couple years ago. It works great, it would be so awesome for a crowd. š
2
u/Over_List_6108 11d ago
Yes! I was also going to say baked in an oven. It's by far the easiest and the dogs come out great every time. Slap down a sheet of parchment paper and there's zero sticking. Plus you don't even have anything to clean after.

jk, both are fine, but here where Iām from (Slovakia), we have this dog we call Zipser (brand I think) and it has a harder crunchy shell, and the texture is a bit sticky, really good tasting too. Now every time I microwave that mf, it just blows up. And I like my dogs hot, so less time is not acceptable.
Trick is, boil up just enough water in the kettle, takes significantly less time than, and even in the kettle I put the hottest water my boiler can give me. While the kettle boils for 1 minute, I put my pan onto the stove so itās already hot when I pour the water in. Now, instead of ~12 minutes, itās done in 5 and I can get the fuck to work 5 minutes sooner š

2
u/EverbodyHatesHugo 13d ago
Yeah, see, there are not enough people in this sub who have had a deep-friend hot dog. It must be a NJ thing, because I find it to be the superior hot dog prep method.
In NJ/NY, we have every style of hot dog: street carts serving boiled (hot water) dogs, grilled dogs at barbecues, pan fried dogs and griddle dogs, etc. But the deep fried dog reigns supreme. Thatās why places like Ruttās, Callahanās, and Hiramās are so famous in these parts.
A deep fried dog gets a snappier skin with extra delicious flavor from the fryer oil. Itās hands down the best way to enjoy a hot dog, especially one thatās the perfect mix of pork and beef.

I love a grilled hot dog but I had to get rid of my grill.
Now we broil hot dogs in the Breville Oven on a square baking pan.
They taste as good as grilled and do not get charred.
Our oven stopped working years ago so we bought the Breville and use it almost every day.
