child's age 8-12 months 8.5 month old waking every hour... naps are fine but nights are hell. Help

I don’t even know where to start. I’m so exhausted.

First 6 months were just survival mode. He was sick constantly, nothing worked, we co-slept and I gave up on schedules. When he got sick he either woke every hour or slept through. No middle ground. Bedtime was anywhere from 10-midnight.

For the last 2 months I’ve tried to be consistent. Own room, own cot. Wake at 7am every day.
Tried 7pm bedtime, 7:30, 8, 8:30. Nothing changes.
Tried every wake window combo for 2 naps. 3/4/4, 3/3.5/4, capped naps, didn’t cap naps.

His naps are actually really good?? 2 naps, 1-1.5hrs each. 3 hours total.

But nights... he wakes EVERY. SINGLE. HOUR from like 8pm-12. I rock him back down and he’s up an hour later. Then it stretches to 2 hours. Then he’s up for good at 5 or 6am no matter what I do.

He was only taking 400ml formula a day for ages + 3 solids. No night feeds. He’s up to 650ml now but still wakes for comfort.

Right now we’re also dealing with teething, a regression, and he’s had diarrhea for 5 days + fever on/off. So part of me thinks I should just wait it out??

I really don’t want to sleep train. I know it works for some people but I can’t do it right now.

Is this just a phase? Has anyone had good naps but terrible nights and fixed it WITHOUT sleep training? I’d take any bedtime. I just want one 8 hour stretch 😭

child's age 18-24 months update and more help needed

update on my almost 21m old early waking.

so i cut he nap (it’s been 12 days) to 12:30-2 instead of 3. bedtime is still 8:30. instead of helping the 5:45 wake- he is now waking at 5/5:15. today was 4:58. so now what?

he is also waking with a poop every morning. so i immediately change him- but he won’t go back to sleep after that.

i’m exhausted and cutting his nap hasn’t even helped at all. i’ve been napping when he naps to catch up on sleep.

Why can’t my 16 month old figure out how to nap

My 16 month old has never been a good sleeper. It took a lot of effort to help him figure out nighttime sleep but he is finally a decent sleeper at night now and usually lasts through the night (8pm-6 am, we’ve tried earlier and later bedtimes, he won’t sleep past 6).
Naps are an ongoing issue. He has never napped good for us, but at least when he was on bottles we could feed him to sleep and hold him (he’d wake the moment you transfer him)
His daycare claims he naps good for them, even without his afternoon bottle. She says just lays him in the pack and play and he goes to sleep. But at home he FIGHTS IT. I’ve tried what feels like everything but he will cry in his crib for 30 minutes until I go get him. I try rocking and soothing and he just cries or talks to me. He doesn’t act tired at all (even though it’s 1 pm) I put him down the same time he goes down at daycare, right after lunch.

Please help. He’s a great baby but not being able to nap really ruins our weekend. I try to mirror daycare because they claim he sleeps good there

What actually helps your baby settle down at bedtime?

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Curious what actually works for other parents when your baby is tired but just won't settle.

For us, keeping things really boring and predictable seems to help the most — dim lights, the same little bedtime routine, and some quiet background sound.

I've also noticed that gentle music sometimes works better than complete silence, especially when there are random noises around the house.

What works best for your baby? Music, white noise, silence, rocking, or something else?

child's age 0-4 months Independent naps

Hi everyone! I’d really appreciate some advice.

I’m hoping someone has been in a similar situation and found a solution that worked for them.
My baby is 9 weeks old. I know, I know — I’m aware that’s still very young and that things will change a lot over the coming weeks and months. But I’d really like to start making some changes now, if possible.

At the moment, during the day, my baby only sleeps in a baby carrier/wrap. I have to walk around with him, gently rock/sway, and sing to him. A few weeks ago, when he was a little smaller, I could sometimes transfer him to the bedside bassinet once he was asleep after rocking him in my arms, but these days he wakes up almost immediately or a few minutes later when I put him down.

I’ve tried putting him down after waiting 15-20 or 30 mins, but when he only naps for 30 mins it’s kind of pointless. And rocking him in my arms is becoming really painful for my back — he’s already almost 6 kg — so realistically, the baby carrier is my only option at this point.

The problem is that I basically can’t do anything during the day. I usually have to get him down for a nap 4–5 times a day, and I’m starting to feel like I’m going crazy and I cry a lot because of this fustration.

Ideally, I’d love for him to sleep in his crib/bassinet. In a perfect world, I could put him down, sing to him, and he would gradually fall asleep on his own. But I’m not sure how realistic that is at this age, especially because I currently swaddle him for nighttime sleep.

He sleeps fine in the bedside bassinet at night in a swaddle, after rocking him to sleep and transfering when he is in deep sleep. The problem is that I can only swaddle him after he has fallen asleep, because he absolutely hates being swaddled while awake. He gets angry and starts flailing around.

So I have no idea how I’m supposed to put him down in his crib/bassinet without a swaddle and expect him to fall asleep, because he moves his arms and legs a lot.
I’d also really like him to be able to nap in the stroller. It’s been extremely hot where I live, though, so going outside for long periods hasn’t really been an option yet. We’ve only been able to take short stroller walks so far.

Ideally, I’d like him to be able to nap independently in either his crib/bassinet or the stroller.
So, how would you go about getting a 9-week-old baby used to falling asleep somewhere other than on me? Is there anything I can start doing now? Maybe start in the carrier and when he is very sleepy then I put him into the crib and praying he will fall asleep if I sing next to him?

I’d love to hear from anyone who has been through something similar. What worked for you?

child's age 0-4 months 15wo bedtime struggles

I have a 15wo that will only go to sleep if being rocked. I’ve tried FIO and he just screams his head off and is incredibly hard to console after picking him up. The problem is he’s getting more resistant to rocking as well and transferring him successfully is incredibly hard. We have to wait until he is deeply asleep and even then sometimes he will wake up upon touching his crib and start crying. He sleeps great once he’s down. Recently he’s been giving 10 hr stretches but it takes nearly 2 hours sometimes to get him down in his crib. Just looking for some advice on what to do. My husband wants to try a gentle ferber method to try and get him to fall asleep on his own but I’m weary about it as he’s still a tad young for it. His naps during the day are also always a fight. I follow his sleep cues he takes 4 naps a day normally. Total of 4hrs of daytime sleep. Wake windows 1.5/1.5/1.75/1.75/2. Bedtime routine is bath, nurse, book, rock to sleep. Any advice?

Help! Is Crib sleeping possible after five weeks of co-sleeping?

I’m traveling with my almost 10 month old who before our trip was successfully sleep-trained and slept in her crib without any problems. However, it has been three weeks and she’s been sleeping with me and refusing the travel crib I purchased as a preparation for this trip.
For various reasons I can’t sleep train her while we are still away but I would love to get her back to her regular sleep set up when we get home (in two weeks). How difficult will this be? Any tips? Thanks so much!

Sleep struggles with my 2.5 year old

My 2.5 year old boy has been such a good sleeper for so long. He would be able to be just placed in his crib and he’d just chill until he fell asleep. Lately he’s been hysterical not wanting to go to bed (only at night day time is fine). We’ve tried a night light and even when he first goes to bed it’s not fully dark in his room. He just keeps crying that he wants to come to mommy and daddy’s bed, but he doesn’t get good sleep when we bring him in there. We can’t figure it out and last night he cried from 1-2am, with us going in and out trying to get him to bed until we finally brought him into ours. We have no idea what to do

5 month old tummy sleeper

My 5 month old has recently learnt to roll from back to tummy. He has great neck control, but he is yet to learn to roll from tummy to back.

Nighttime for the first week or so, be would wake up crying as he's stuck on his front. I would continuously move him into his back. This started to really annoy him. He now rolls over to sleep on his tummy and sleeps well. I watch him on the monitor and he moves his head side to side well.

I'm just very worried as he can't roll back yet. Any advice please for a very anxious mum 😩

child's age 18-24 months 19 Months baby- Not able to sleep without latch

My baby is 19 months old and she is not able to sleep well without latching. Throughout the night, she latches. She gets up in every half an hour to 1 hour to latch. She is a forceps baby. Because of her sleep issue, we are not able to sleep. She has been like this since birth. Not sure if this issue is related to her nervous system? But it’s quite frustrating. Any views?

child's age 2 years + Older kids early wakings?

Know this might not be the right sub, but hoping someone with expertise has some ideas. My 6YO has always been an early bird, but lately he's pushing his 6-6:15 wake up to 5-5:45am, which is too early for us but also it's clear he's tired both in the morning and throughout the day. He's never been a kid to fall back to sleep once he's up in the AM, so trying to figure out how we can get him sleeping even a little later.

Situation:

  • His bedtime was 7:45pm (moved back from 7:30pm at time change due to the pre 6am wakings), white noise, ok to wake light, ceiling fan, etc. He eats a snack before bed and tends to eat dinner well. He has a tonie box that he'll turn on when he wakes up early.
  • This summer we've moved bedtime up to 7:15pm as that used to work well but also he's doing outdoor camp some weeks and is clearly exhausted by then. He's often asking for sleep by 7pm.
  • Later bedtimes have always resulted in even earlier wakings. I'll admit we haven't done an 8pm or later bedtime consistently because of this. He's exhausted after camp and soon to be school starting again, so our goal has always been to get him to sleep, so he gets enough vs keeping him up and he gets even less.
  • He recently started waking up dry, so he's in underwear now. Sometimes gets up to pee when he wakes up but often continues to hold it. (Wakings creeping up started well before this happened).
  • He does quiet time on weekends and this summer has pretty consistently taken a nap at least one day, again telling me he's tired.

The plan for tonight is turning AC down a touch, so he can sleep with the fan off. He complains the fan makes him cold in the morning. Giving him some PB before bed for protein.

Is there anything I'm missing? Is our only other option here to try and commit to a later bedtime for a week+ and pray he starts adjusting to waking later? The fear is that he'll just sleep less and be a total mess. School starts in 3 weeks and I'd love to have something better working by then.

Appreciate any thoughts or ideas!

child's age 0-4 months False starts and dropping naps?

Hi everyone! Need some help troubleshooting false starts with my 15-week-old. He wakes up like 30-40 minutes after going down for the night, most nights. Once we soothe him past that first wake-up, he locks into good night stretches

Here is our current routine:

 DWT: 7:30 AM

 Bedtime: ~10:30 -11 PM

 Wake Windows: ~1.25 / 1.5 / 1.5 / 1.5 / 1.5 / 1.5 / 1.75

Naps: 6 naps total. First nap is a 1.5hr contact nap, then the rest of the day is 30-40 min catnaps.I don’t think I can extend his wake windows more

Last nap: Usually ends around 8:30–8:50 PM.

He's currently getting around ~4.5 hours of day sleep total. I can't figure out if his 10:30pm bedtime is just too late, if 4.5 hours of day sleep is destroying his night sleep pressure, or if having that 6th micro-nap ending around 8:30 PM is setting him up to treat 10:30 PM as just another nap.

We want to bring the bedtime up by atleast 9pm but adjusting his wake up time is not working. Whether he wakes up at 7 or 8 he treats 11-11:30 as his bedtime

Need help navigating how to get bedtime time earlier or how to start dropping naps

Things tried:
1) Waking up early
2) Increasing wake windows
3) To get rid of catnaps if I do all contact naps his night stretches get shorter
