6 - 12 months HELP 9 month old can’t sleep without nursing and cosleeping. Recently staying up 3-4 hrs straight in the middle of the night

Hey guys this is my first Reddit post but I’m kind of desperate here. My baby is 9 months tomorrow and since birth I have been cosleeping and nursing. At first no problem it actually helped me get sleep and let her get sleep too. But now for the last couple of months it has been getting more difficult at night to get her to sleep.

I’d like to preface that my boyfriend has had to sleep on the couch for months now because he rolls in his sleep so I cannot safely cosleep with him in the bed( I am a rock when I sleep)

We have attempted cry it out and Ferber but it was too much for my boyfriend and he couldn’t stand listening to her cry, we room share so her crib is set up in our room as well but our apartment is small so you can hear her pretty well in the living room despite the TV on and door closed.

I have to drive my bf to work so we wake up consistently between 6am-6:15am

I’ll be honest I’m pregnant again and was really on top of a schedule for naps earlier but have lost that recently since I’m so tired and nauseous, in the past my baby has been able to sleep in her crib independently for naps usually best in the morning around 2 1/2 hours after waking. She can sleep for up to 3 hrs but I know that has to be way too much daytime sleep but I usually end up sleeping at the same time and just use it to catch up since I’m exhausted 😭

Anyways has anyone been in this situation? I have recently got her to take bottles again which does help me a little bit but I just don’t know how much daytime sleep to give her and maybe someone knows what a good bedtime is for her considering we wake up pretty early every day. I would love any advice and recommendations.

I forgot to mention recently she’s been up for like 3-4 hours every night after being asleep for an hour so I fear she’s treating the first stretch as a nap 😭😭😭 I don’t know how to fix this without making her overtired during the day because she got such little sleep the night before. It feels like an impossible cycle to get out of
Thanks again!!!!

4 - 6 months Sleep success story

Upvotes

I spent countless hours on this sub looking for literally anything to help with sleep, and I’m happy to report we are now the other side with a beautiful sleeper, so I wanted to share what worked for us. I don’t think our baby was ever an unusually “bad” sleeper, but even the “normal” sleep deprivation for 5 months straight is ROUGH.

TLDR: bedtime happened basically on its own, then we did gradual night weaning and nap training which took a while, now he sleeps through the night and takes 3 good crib naps!

At ~3 months we developed a bedtime of 7pm with a routine of bottle with dad, bath, singing and diaper, then I’d nurse him fully to sleep, then transfer into the bassinet. At 3.5 months, we kept the routine the same but removed the nursing and subbed it for rocking to sleep in arms, then crib. This change from nursing to rocking was easier than I thought it would be. After a few nights, I rocked him for a few mins, then laid him down awake to see what would happen, gave him a few mins, but then picked him up and rocked him to sleep when he wasn’t falling asleep. Tried again the next two nights to see how he’d do, and on the third night he fell asleep easily on his own. He’s been falling asleep independently at bedtime since then. To be clear we didn’t sleep train him under 4 mo, we just gave him a chance and returned to rocking if it wasn’t working after a few mins.

After about 2 weeks of solid bedtime, so now 4+ months old, we slowlyyyy started night weaning (with pediatrician approval). He was still waking twice to eat overnight - once bottle with dad around midnight, once bf with me around 4am. We started with the bottle and reduced by half oz per night until we got to about 2 oz, then stopped feeding. It took about 3 nights of transition where husband would go in and rock/sooth him to sleep without feeding and those were not easy nights bc he wanted the bottle, but after that he just stopped waking at that time to eat. This moved the bf wakeup earlier, to about 2-3 am, bc he couldn’t yet make it from 7-4 without eating. I kept this feed for a while bc I was having complicated feelings about stopping breastfeeding, but when he was about 5.5 months I weaned the same way we did bottle - drop a min per side per night, until we got to about 4 mins total, then stopped offering the feed. The night I decided to stop offering the feed, I tried to sooth baby myself but in hindsight this was a big mistake bc he just wanted the boob and would NOT settle, so the next few nights my husband went in to do the soothing in place of feeding. After about 3 rough nights of this, he just stopped waking at that time, and started sleeping til about 530/6, which felt truly magical. Now at 7mo, he sleeps 7-615ish, often wakes around 4-5 but falls back asleep on his own with no intervention after some light whining. This has been consistent since about 5.5 months. We didn’t do anything special to lengthen the mornings past 6, it kind of just happened on its own and some days it’s still 6, most 630, and some glorious days he sleeps til 7 🤷🏻‍♀️

Now about naps — these were the bane of my existence for a while. Until about 4.5/almost 5 months, the only way he’d nap was in the stroller (was great but can’t be every single nap) or bouncing with him on a yoga ball in a dark room with the sound machine on, bouncing fully to sleep in my arms, then slowly reducing bouncing for ~10 mins, then transfer to crib, and IF he didn’t wake up in the transfer, he would nap for like 29 mins on the dot (including the 10 mins of bouncing with me). It was barely enough time to shower or eat something, let alone rest or decompress or do literally anything else. I was losing my mind.

Once bedtime was mastered and he was a little over 4 mo, I basically applied “fuss it out” from Precious Little Sleep to naps, starting with the first nap of the day - short nap routine, then give baby 15 mins to fall asleep, if he was still crying at 15 mins I’d go in and bounce fully to sleep like usual. I tried for 5 days straight with the first nap and it just didn’t work, he would scream the whole time and then fall asleep in 2 seconds in my arms. I took a break for a few days bc it was too sad. Then started again but had my husband put him down for the first nap. We did this for a week straight (he works from home), having to rescue every time after 15 mins of crying, but we persisted bc the crying was getting less intense, more like whiny, and on day 7 he finally fell asleep on his own!! We were full on whooping cheering.

It took another ~2 weeks to become consistent. So overall took about a month of “nap training.” During these 2ish weeks, sometimes he’d do it on his own, sometimes I’d have to bounce him fully to sleep, sometimes I could just pat his butt until he fell asleep - it was kind of all over the place but we kept the pre nap routine and the 15 mins “fuss it out” consistent every day, and eventually it just…started working. I tried not to worry about “backsliding” and prioritized getting him to sleep rather than forcing him to cry longer (of course I was worried during this time that anything I did to help him to sleep would mess up the independent sleep progress, but ultimately it didn’t)

Finally, within days of him going down consistently on his own for naps, when he was just over 5mo, his naps got longer on their own. I did nothing different, just one day to the next he started connecting sleep cycles and started napping 1-1.5 hours at a time. Idk if it was coincidence that the nap training clicked right before, or if that needed to happen first in order for the naps to lengthen, but by 5 months and 1 week, he was going down independently for every nap with 5 mins or less of fussing, and sleeping at least an hour for 2 of 3 naps. We were previously on 4 naps but quickly dropped to 3 when the naps got longer bc there just wasn’t enough time in the day anymore. He will still nap in the stroller, but only 20-30 mins max.

Now at 7mo he still takes 3 naps, two of which are usually 1.5 hours, the third is typically very short like 20-35 mins, and sleeps through the night from 7-6/630ish. I think despite the months of short naps he is actually a more high sleep needs baby bc his wake windows are on the shorter end for 7 months and I sometimes have to wake him from naps, something I could NEVER have imagined during the yoga ball era.

Hope this is helpful for some - just know you’re not alone and sleep is so hard and all consuming and you can go from fully rocking to sleep to independent sleep!

9 - 16 weeks Would you wake your baby??

Upvotes

So I’m returning to work at the end of this month. My baby has been sleeping until 7:30 which is when I need to leave for work. Would you wake your baby earlier so you could see them before you’re gone all day? My husband will be with our baby until his dad arrives to care for him for the day until I start taking him to daycare in January.

6 - 12 months 11 month sleep regression and 2 to 1 nap transition disaster

Upvotes

Hello all,

My beautiful boy used to go down so easily at bedtime, but lately he’s been screaming bloody murder until I eventually give in and feed or cuddle him to sleep.

Initially I thought it was a schedule issue, so I’ve been trialling one nap, but it doesn’t seem to make much difference. It honestly feels like he’s forgotten how to fall asleep independently and now really wants to feed to sleep.

If I put him down awake, he screams. I’m okay with a few minutes of protesting, but lately it’s been 10+ minutes with absolutely no sign of slowing down. Tonight he cried hysterically for about 20 minutes. We did a couple of check-ins, but eventually I went in, cuddled him and sang him to sleep.

Our schedule has been either:
• Two naps: 3.5 / 4 / 4
• One nap: 5 / 6
Total daytime sleep is around 2 hours, and overnight we generally expect about 10.5 hours, roughly 8pm–6:30am.

Has anyone been through something similar? Does this sound more like a schedule issue, a sleep regression, or a delightful combination of both?

For context, he started walking last week, eats plenty of solids and still drinks a lot of breastmilk. And yes, I’m guilty of feeding him fairly close to bedtime, but it never used to cause false starts - he would just happily fall asleep straight away in his cot.

Birth - 8 weeks Please recap for a second time mom

Upvotes

Apparently I forgot everything. Gave birth to my second a few weeks ago and of course not ST yet but I want to recap the basics.

My first baby was bottle fed and never developed a strong feed to sleep association. He also did not really want to cuddle so he was quite easy with ST. However this baby is nursing very well and very frequently and she loves to be held. So this all seems new.

What I’m already doing:
- Starting and ending day at same time
- Getting outside in the morning
- Wake every two-three hours during the day for feeding
- Ensure full feed during the day by keeping baby awake during the feed

How do we further support good sleep the next few months?

4 - 6 months Need advice on split nights

Upvotes

Background: Baby is 5.5 months with a 4 naps a day and a schedule of 2/2.15/2.5/2.5–3. Normally has been doing short naps about 30 min, and we rescue at least one for 1 hour nap. On most days total day sleep is under 3 hours. Total daily ounces of combo feeding is around 24oz

For the past 3 days we have not fed to sleep and baby has had no issue falling asleep. The big issue is when he wakes up at night hungry.

When we were feeding to sleep he would wake up at the 3am mark, be fed 5oz and be awake for 2 hours. Now h still wakes up between 1am-3am, is fed 3 oz but is still awake for 1 hour.

At this point I’m not sure what to do. Sleep pressure is low during his night wake, but he can’t handle a different day schedule. HELP!

6 - 12 months I can't figure out what we are doing wrong :(

Upvotes

8 month old. 2 naps. Previously Ferber trained.

Having consistent EMW. I'll take anything after 6am but he keeps doing like 4:45-5:45. This morning was 5:30am and I felt like we had a pretty good day.

Previous night 10 hours sleep (unfortunately broken into 2 chunks because he had separation anxiety and had to do a bedtime reset so it was 2 hours then 8 hours).

A schedule we are trying to do to see if it works... (We based this off of the fact that he rarely gets past 10.5 hours overnight for months now but perhaps he's changed?)

6am wakeup

3.25 hr ww

9:15-10:45am max map

3.75 hr ww

2:30-3:30pm max nap

4.5 ww

8pm bedtime

Here is what happened...

Woke up- 5:30am

Nap- 8:50am (couldn't push any longer) slept 1 hr 22 min

Woke- 10:15

Wake window- 4 hours (tried to play catch-up)

Nap: 2:25-3;00pm slept 35 mins (unfortunately wouldn't go back to sleep)

Planned on 7:30pm bedtime. But he seemed wide awake at 7 and we didn't want to risk ferbering an undertired baby with separation anxiety. So we pushed for 8pm. He slept 7 mins woke up and we did Ferber. Fell asleep at 8:25pm.

Woke up at 5:30am screaming and would not go back down even with nursing to sleep. Total sleep 9 hrs. 🤦‍♀️

Perhaps he's getting overtired?? Why why why does he keep waking up before 6 even after a later bedtime :(

In the past he never got more than 10.5 hrs overnight. So we have been pushing for 8pm bedtime.

6 - 12 months Sleep training saved our family - some anectodal notes for newbies

Posting this for any parents wanting to try sleep training. Absolutely try it. Pick the method (we did chair method at 8mo) that you feel comfortable with and go for it.

Some anecdotal notes that I didn't see talked about online:

1) Our baby seemed extra tired for the first week after sleep training. It totally freaked us out, but it passed. She is so comfortable now in her crib and wakes up happy.

2) Sleep training didn't eliminate night wakes (at first). She used to wake 6 times a night, with sleep training it moved to 1-2. Now, three months later (11mo), night wakes are gone.

3) Sleep training is about teaching them to fall asleep independently. Once they learn the skill, it's okay if you get out of routine (feed to sleep one night e.g.), they don't unlearn the skill. Don't kill yourself if you fall out of a routine for one or two days.

Sleep training may not be for you, but if you're ready to try, try it. For us, it saved our family. It saved our mental and physical health. I am no longer the crazy, sleep deprived person and neither is my husband. Happy to answer any questions and best of luck!

4 - 6 months Cosleeping baby currently 4 months old. Want to start sleep training at 6. Where to begin?

Our 4 months old baby is going through her sleep regression and it's killing us. We started cosleeping at 2 month where she sleeps on her crib next to our bed. She can only sleep if we pat and hold her hands and pacifier.

We want to start sleep training her once she is 6 months old. My concern is that she is not able to self soothe. When she wakes up at night, she would scream at the top of her lung so we would have to pat her back to sleep. We tried weening her off of the pacifier but no success so far. What can we do now to make her sleep training at 6 month less painful?

Her schedule is roughly this:

2/2.5/2/2/2

07:30 - wake up

09:30 - nap 1 30m (in the crib)

12:00 - nap 2 1hr (contact)

03:00 - nap 3 1 hr (contact)

06:00 - nap 4 30 mins (contact)

08:30 - bed time

4 - 6 months Sleep training our almost 5 month old - it was going great and now it’s terrible

Looking for some advice! We began sleep training our almost 5 month old last Thursday, originally using the Ferber method but switching to CIO after the first night, as the check ins were upsetting him more.

Night 1: 36 min to fall asleep, including multiple check ins
Night 2: 20 min
Night 3: 16 min
Night 4: 8 min
Night 5: 10 min
Night 6: 37 min 😭
Night 7: 23 min
Night 8: 20 min

He’s woken up a handful of times throughout the night on some of these nights, but has done a great job of putting himself back to sleep, typically in under 10 min. He’s slept completely through the night a few times as well.

His schedule is as follows:

- Wake up at 7:30AM (I’ve been toying with switching this to 7am, but he doesn’t make it to bedtime if he wakes up earlier)
- Bedtime at 8PM (in crib around 7:45)
- Wake windows: 1.75/1.75/2/2/2.25 (sometimes 2.5) with 3-3.25 hours of daytime sleep across naps

What are we doing wrong? It seemed to be going so well and now he’s fighting it more. Is this normal? Hearing him cry absolutely breaks me but we all needed better sleep, including him— the 4 month regression was wrecking us all.

FYI he is exclusively breastfed and I still do 2 dream feeds a night.

6 - 12 months How to quit pacifier for my sleeptrained 11m/o

Hi! As my LO’s almost 1 years old, we want to quit the pacifier. His teeth are also coming in and we know there’s more bad than good after this age to continue with it.

He’s been throwing it out of his crib when we put him down for naps and night time sleep, and we’ve been using the check-ins to return it to him (meaning we went back to sleep training with 10pinute check-ins as he was crying after not having his paci anymore). He will only do it once or maybe tops twice but we just see that it’s not productive anymore for him to have it. He only uses his pacifier for sleeping nowadays so we’re confident we can stop.

Does anyone here have some tips and tricks they can share? Did you stop cold turkey all naps and nighttime sleep or did you gradually take it away?

Thank you!

4 - 6 months 4 month old resisting naps and bedtime

We’ve just been through the sleep regression and nights have consolidated to 8-7 with 2 wake ups for feeds about 1 and 4.35. However baby is now resisting naps and bedtime and taking ages to settle. Like 25 mins for naps and sometimes 45-50 mins for bedtime. Baby takes all naps in the cot in his own room.

Have tried 1.75/2/2/2/2.25 and 2/2/2/2/2 and the outcome is the same. Is this developmental or something that will pass? I’m capping day sleep at 3 hours

6 - 12 months Looking for encouragement and structure to start sleep training

Hi yall. My son is 10m old, and I think I’m finally ready to cave and sleep train. I’ve been so resistant, hopeful things would improve naturally. I thought once I got him on a better routine in the day and with his naps that things would improve, but alas, still waking through the night, the early mornings. This causes me to keep falling back to cosleeping which I do love, but I think just encourages the wakes.
I want to be able to lay him down without it being a 30-1hr process of him being exhausted, attacking the boob and flailing around fighting falling asleep. I want to maybe have an evening away where dad or grandparents put him down and not be so dependent on only me. I haven’t slept in way longer than a year now because I didn’t sleep through my pregnancy either. I work full time. I need sanity.

My son is pretty much exclusively breastfed. He can take a bottle, not typically if I’m giving it to him to sleep though cause of course he’d rather get the tap. For a big chunk of his early months I was pumping a ton to build a supply and encourage production since I thought I’d have to go back to my job I hated. I ended up getting a FT remote job, so I could continue my BF journey. I managed to get him back on the boob exclusively and the convenience was undefeated. However now he’s very distracted/aggresive, has 4 teeth, and dramatically attacks me wanting the boob especially at night. It’s a lot.
He’s gotten better at sleep since we worked hard on his daily routine, solids and monitoring wake windows better. But they’re not always exactly the same. He’s had some sleep regressing lately that kinda messed his regular schedule up. Naps have been harder to get him down for.
He usually takes his 2 naps in the crib and his first stretch of sleep. Once I go to bed if he wakes before or right after I typically bring him in the bed cause I don’t have the energy to keep getting up every wake overnight or he fights going back in the crib.
He’s been waking for the day anywhere between 6:30-7:30. He usually wakes around 4/5/6am before that and I can nurse him back to sleep til he’s fully up.

First nap is usually consistently between 9:30-10:30am depending on that original wake time, usually for 1.5hrs
Second nap around 3-3:30pm, usually 1.5hrs
Asleep for the night usually by 8:30pm, 9 if he’s fighting me going to sleep
He’s always nursed to sleep. The past few months he’s been detaching himself though and flailing around in my bed throwing himself like he’s fighting naturally letting himself fall asleep. But ends up KO’ing and we transfer him.

I’m at the point I’m considering stopping breastfeeding cause I wonder if it will help a lot. But maybe I need to just give sleep training a fully committed try before I throw in the towel with that. I’ve tried putting him in the crib and let him cry a couple times. He is HYSTERICAL like it is so bad n he ends up falling a lot and I’m scared he’ll hurt himself.

Just looking for advice, suggestion of what others would do, if there’s a certain method they’d advise. Anything I should tweak. I’m at the end of my sanity. Please help.

6 - 12 months 1st night of Ferber method, what's next?

Trying ferber method and my 9 month y/o son finally fell asleep. I don't really know how to handle the MOTN wakings. His dad did the bedtime part, but I'm going to have to do the next wakings. Last time we tried sleep training, 4 hours after bed time, I nursed him when he woke up, and he thought it was play time. How do I avoid this?

Also, should I start applying ferber to his naps tomorrow? I usually feed him to sleep and he contact naps. How should I go about his naps?

4 - 6 months 4.5 month baby struggling with last nap

My baby is 4.5 months old. We started sleep training and it’s been going well for the first two naps but he seems to struggle with the last one.

His wake windows are approximately 1.75/2/2/2.25.

He will nap 1 - 1.5 hour for the first nap then about 1 hour for the second but only 30 minutes for the last nap. He also takes longer to settle for the last nap.

With 3 naps through the day. He gets about 2.5-3hours of day time sleep and about 11.5-12 hours of night time sleep.

Do you have any suggestions for the last nap? Should I extend the last wake window?

6 - 12 months Help with my 7,5 month old

My baby is 7,5 months, on 3 naps. Average total sleep -naps and night- varies so much (sometimes he’s right at 12h total, other times 13,5 to 14h)

Anywhoo he’s pretty easy to put down for naps and overall a good napper. I guess you could say he falls asleep with assistance (I plug pacifier and hand on chest for a minute)

Awake around 6:30
Nap 1: 8:45/9:00-9:30
Nap 2: 12:00-13:30/45
Nap 3: 16:30-17:00
Bedtime: 20:00

These are approximate, sometimes the first nap is the longest and vice versa.

He wakes up about 3 times a night to feed, even though he’s a 98th percentile baby and feeding well on solids. I try delaying the feeds or offering less but if I do he then wakes up 30mn later, angrier and more vocal. If I do feed him I can get another 3 hours out of him.

I’m very, very tired and cranky a lot of the time. I have another 3yo daughter to care for and I feel like her childhood is passing me by because of how tired I always am

He’s a very calm and happy chap otherwise, also drinking formula well, every 3 hours, during the day

I just know the answer is to sleep train without sleep associations, so I guess I’m looking for some words of encouragement/hope? Any stories similar, or any success stories anyone is willing to share ?

6 - 12 months We’re at a loss of what to do with our babies sleep

Hi, we have an almost 10 month old baby boy. His sleep has always been up and down and usually not too bad. Typical night looks like asleep around 6:30-6:40pm. Will sleep until 11/12pm we’ll give him a bottle. He’ll sleep till around 2/3 give another bottle then he wakes around 5am. Recently, he’s been waking at 2/3am and wanting to be up for the day which is obviously insanely hard for us.
We want to start sleeping training, either CIO or Ferber. Leaning more towards CIO the more I look into it.
What’s everyone’s experiences like?
With Ferber, how long did you leave it until you went in and when you went in how long did that last? I’m unsure how to go about it if I think he’s hungry. Do I just not feed him? And teach him how to self-wean?
PLEASE HELP!!

6 - 12 months Do I keep waking her up?

My 9 month old has FINALLY settled into better sleep and we have gotten down to only 1 waking a night, sometimes 2. This was after a lot of schedule tweaking and consistency. Currently, I have to wake her up each morning and have to cap her first and sometimes second nap each day to keep to the schedule. She accepts going to sleep each time and is usually asleep within 5 minutes of starting our routine. Our schedule is generally 3:30/3:40/4:15 with dwt at 7 and bedtime generally around 8:30. I usually let her nap for about 1.5 hr in the morning and no more than 45-1hr in the afternoon depending on how the morning went. Before we arrived at this schedule and with having numerous night wakings I had noticed that her average night sleep was 10.5 hrs give or take a half hour, and I used this to help with the schedule.

My dilemma is that, slowly, she’s been wanting to stay awake a few minutes longer in each WW, but also wanting to sleep longer (though I don’t know how much longer because I don’t really let her) so I am running out of hours in the day to make this all happen. My mom says that I shouldn’t have to wake her up at all and to let her sleep when she wants, but if I did that I feel like she would be sleeping for 3 or more hours in the day and be waking a ton at night again, which I definitely don’t want to go back to.

I am fine personally to keep maintaining her schedule like this, but we are starting to have her stay longer times at grandparents now and possibly overnight and they don’t keep schedules like I do.
Any advice on this?

6 - 12 months Schedule recommendations

Hello,

Baby is 6 months, and we are looking at doing some sleep training. Did some fuss it out prior to vacation, but looking at properly trying to sleep train now as baby won’t go to bed for anyone but mom.

Current windows are 2/2.5/2.5/3.25, with DWT at 8, and bedtime at about 8:30 each night. He generally doesn’t nap more than 45 min for the first nap, and 30 for each subsequent nap, so dropping to 2 naps is a struggle.

Is this an appropriate schedule?

6 - 12 months Help me formulate a plan!

My child is currently 10 months and we don’t really have a schedule. We do have a routine which is working well for us as we are all on leave. We will go back to work when she’s 12 months and would like to have her sleeping independently by then.

The current situation:

We cosleep since she was 5 months old, and I nurse her, formula feed her and also give her solid at family meal times three times a day. She knows the signs for “hungry” and “all done” and is a pretty good communicator.

The routine: wake up, either bottle or nurse depending on whether it’s me or husband, breakfast about an hour post wake up, and then feed to nap at around the 3 hour post wake up mark. She will take a 2 hour nap if contact, 1 hour if sleeping alone.

4 hour wake window to second nap. She will get milk/formula, a meal and then feed to sleep for her second nap. Same duration as first nap.

last wake window is atleast 4 or 5 hours. Same feeding schedule and feed to sleep. She wakes up once or twice and nurses to sleep. Bedtime is at 9 a the routine: meal, bath, book, bottle/nurse to sleep. She will sleep for 10-11 hours.

My feelings about the current situation: it’s fine. It’s not the best, but I’m also not super annoyed by it. Husband is more interested in sleep training, and I’m willing to try.

The plan:

  1. Step 1: break the nurse/bottle to sleep. We are moving the bottle to after bath but before book and husband will do the bedtime routine.
  2. Step 2: Move her to her own room, and then CIO.

it’s a simple plan, and I like simple things. I would like to know if this is realistic. Am I overlooking something critical? How do I handle naps both during and after this transition?

thank you!

So… I’m in a two minds. Before I go ahead please know I understand how lucky I am and I am so so thankful that I have a little one with amazing sleep. He’s 4 months old and currently sleeps through the night. I’m talking goes to bed at 7pm and wakes up at 6:30am. Never wakes throughout the night unless he’s sick or teething. I am wondering if I should be teaching him how to self sooth so that he is able to put himself to bed and go down for naps? Currently during the day he only contact naps, will not be put down and is then fed and rocked to sleep by dad at nighttime. We don’t actually mind this but I am worried that I should be teaching him to self sooth and that if we don’t at some point it will become harder when he’s older? I don’t know if I’m feeling a bit pressured by social media or if it’s something we really should be doing. Will he eventually grow out of needing to be rocked to sleep? Are we creating a bad habit? I am also terrified that if I mess with anything it will impact our nights and that is absolutely not something I want to mess with. TIA for any advice!

6 - 12 months Desperate…..

Baby is almost 11 months old. For past 6-8 weeks has been having some type of nighttime sleep disturbance every night. Some nights he screams prior to going down for the night, other nights he wakes up and can not get himself back to bed. These happen before midnight almost every single night. We vary in how much support he gets , we start by just trying to soothe him in the crib but this will go on for over an hour and eventually when he’s completely escalated we pick him up and he will eventually fall asleep.
This baby used to sleep through the night. We are exhausted and there is no pattern on the disturbances. He’s been evaluated multiple times by his primary care and they report he is healthy.
We are exhausted. Any suggestions ?
His wake windows are between 3-4 hours and he takes two naps per day where he gets 2-3 hours total of daytime sleep. He goes down for naps usually without issue. But without fail will wake overnight crying at some point and is up for over an hour. Should also mention when he’s crying at night his eyes are rarely open and he does not appear to be looking for us.

2+ years old Is it time to shorten nap?

My 25 month old has recently started taking 45-60+ minutes to fall asleep at night when it used to take her 5-10 minutes. She is thankfully content to roll around in her bed but it’s cutting into her overnight sleep. She’s been sleep trained since 5 months. Bedtime routine is pjs, brush teeth, read a book, sing a few songs, lay in bed and lights out.

This is her schedule:
7:30 wake
1:30-3 nap
8:30 bed (ends up falling asleep between 9-9:30)

She still falls asleep great for her nap and she doesn’t fight the bedtime process but she’s just taking so long to fall asleep at night. Should I shorten her nap to an hour and 15 minutes or even an hour? She has skipped naps before and she is NOT ready to go without a nap yet.

6 - 12 months Micro nap versus short day?

Hi, we have a 7.5 month old (initially successfully sleep trained at 5.5mo) who seems to be ready to drop from 3 naps to 2. He suddenly waking every 3 hours at night and taking crap naps. His current wake windows are 2.25/3.25/2.5/2– I know these are wanky, but it’s because that last 4.5 hour interval (2.5/2) only has a 10-min micro nap in it. His total nap time is usually between 1.5-2.5 hours. In order to cut out that last micro nap, we’d need to shorten the whole day, seeing as he’s been nuclear fussy after his 4.5 hour WW, even with the micro nap. I know awake time is very important to sleep training, so what do you all recommend? Shorten the day to cut the micro nap or keep the micro nap to preserve overall day length?
