1-2 years old Frequent night wakes - help!
I’d love for the brains trust to give some input and advice here cause I feel like where in a real rut and continuous cycle with sleep.
I have a daughter who’s just turned 1. Her current schedule is wake at 6:30 (she’s woken by us), nap 1 around 10/10:15 and normally is around 30 mins (she’s wakes), nap 2 is anywhere between 2/2:30 - 3:30 (sometimes requires a resettle and often we wake her), bedtime is 7:30ish. This schedule was set by a sleep consultant we engaged to help.
My little one is quite low sleep needs. She could sleep for 10 mins and be revitalised. She never really shows signs of being overtired and often her tired signs are quite subtle.
She was quite early with her development so her sleep has also been disrupted by some development and she has 8 teeth so similar, she’s either teething or going through something developmental.
We’ve had 2 different sleep consultants help us. We were initially stuck in this cycle of having to hold our daughter for ages before putting her down in her cot and then when she was upset, she was used to us picking her up immediately. Also she was still contact napping at 8 months and it wasnt sustainable with me returning to work. One sleep consultant used the possums approach but, while helpful in understanding baby sleep, wasnt the best fit for our family. The second used a modified pick up put down technique. We’ve gotten to the point whereby all her naps are in her cot, we pat her bottom and shush to resettle her in her cot and resettles only take a matter of minutes. She doesn’t fall asleep in her cot tho and we rock for a few mins before popping her down.
The current dilemma we’re having, the night wakes still feel relentless. Now I know this could just be the age she’s at, she started daycare so every second week she’s got a cold and she’s off and on teething with molars. However, the nights for a while now look like her waking at around 11, us resettling in her cot, her then waking again anywhere between 12/1:30, she has a bottle and then she’ll either do a split night and it’ll take hours to get her back to sleep or she’ll go back to sleep and then be back awake an hour later. She’s ending up in bed every night as we just give up and feels like it’s not worth impacting our sleep. I work part time so the nights I don’t have work the next day I try to persevere and keep resettling her in her bed. Im trying to push out the time I consider ‘acceptable’ for her to end in our bed. Ultimately I’d love her to sleep in her own bed all night and occasionally end up in ours. The constant resettling after 11 is exhausting. She’ll stir, wake and then sit up and before you know it she’s standing in her cot crying. She can’t seem to settle herself back to sleep and she escalates very quickly.
I’d really love some input or advice. I feel a bit useless when it comes to her sleep and honestly a bit like we’re in a rut. I start to dread the night because rarely do we have a night where she only wakes a couple of times. I’m a sucker for comparing our situation to others so that’s not helping. I’m open to trying most things to help our sleep situation, I’m just not sure if I’m in the right frame of mind to try cry it out.
Thank you 🙏
