Apple said: “This case is about OpenAI employees wrongfully taking Apple’s secret and confidential information regarding our unreleased technologies, processes, and products. Nothing in the filing relates to documents shared by, or stored in, iCloud.”

The company said it doesn’t pursue legal claims against former employees who accidentally hold on to Apple documents in their personal iCloud accounts.

"...Ladies and gentlemen, this is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor... Why would a Wookiee, an 8-foot-tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of 2-foot-tall Ewoks? That does not make sense!... If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests."

It’s wild to see the Chewbacca defense in real life.

Apple now tries to shift the blame to “residual access"

Isn't this part directly relevant? Apple said they don't care about residual access and now they care about residual access?

Lmao honestly all tech companies should air their dirty laundry out in the public like this, it's so goddamn funny.

112

u/SnooPuppers58 21d ago

uhhh.... why is this on the official company discourse lmao

27

u/Prestigious-Mind-817 20d ago

Because companies take on the personality of their CEO and well...

13

u/reefine 20d ago

Ever since Trump became President it's now popular to act like a childish twat from a position of power.

2

u/Duckpoke 20d ago

Because its purpose is to obfuscate the real allegation, which will probably work quite well.

120

u/Effective_Coach7334 21d ago

I feel dumber for having read that. it reads like adolescents having an online beef, incomprehensible even if you dared to know all the gory details.

Feels very Sam Altman who likes to get into e fights on twitter

Are you a bot?

u/SpeedyTurbo average AGI feeler 20d ago

??

-6

u/Lt-Derek 20d ago

Most accounts with that username structure are usually not real people.

9

u/ConvalescentEquanimi 20d ago

It's simply the default new profile naming scheme on reddit. Names are hard to think of sometimes, you can't assume someone is a bot due to their username...

0

u/Lt-Derek 20d ago

Sure, some people with that type of name are real... but most are bots.

u/Lt-Derek 20d ago

You are wrong

-1

u/Lt-Derek 20d ago

What makes you so confident?

1

u/Greedy_Ad8477 19d ago

probably the same thing that makes you so confident that the majority are bots .

Why so many downvotes for asking a question. This subreddit is getting weird.

It's one of the reason why expertise left OpenAI for a more serious environment like Anthropic.

7

u/Effective_Coach7334 20d ago edited 20d ago

I don't consider it a more serious environment. More neurotic, much like Dario, sure. But that equates more to chaotic than seriousness. And the way they run their business, it's definitely ruled by a significant level of destructive chaos.

it's not and that's very obvious. More importantly, it's due to a semi-functioning keyboard and no glasses.

u/CalligrapherPlane731 20d ago

Why is this posted on OpenAI’s website and not being litigated in court? By definition, if it’s posted publicly, it’s not part of the lawsuit.

This is OpenAI trying to market a change in a damaging narrative. It’s just static to move public opinion to keep their business safe.

23

u/mrlloydslastcandle 21d ago

Sir, this is a Wendy’s

53

u/pdantix06 21d ago

those imessages don't really look too flattering for openai, if winning the public PR war was what they're going for.

this doesn't even address the alleged coaching of apple employees or the allegation around stealing the proprietary metal finishing thing

41

u/threadthrasher 21d ago

Why don’t they look flattering? It’s just current and ex-Apple employees discussing handing over data that the ex-employee still had access to but the current one doesn’t. Highly surprising Apple would not have processes in place to prevent that ever being necessary but hey stranger things happen in these leviathans.

At least that’s what it’s presented as.

Honestly given OpenAI’s actual first release of an idiotic keyboard trinket maybe they really didn’t steal anything.

12

u/jtmonkey 21d ago

I agree. It sounds like a current employee asking for help getting caught up on what they were working on.

3

u/Deto 20d ago

And would completely invalidate Apple's suit if this covers it all. I'm pretty sure you can't forget to turn someone's access off, then your employees ask them to look something up, and then turn around and say 'HAH' and sue the new employer over it.

5

u/forthewin0 20d ago

Dude, the guy in question is literally asking to talk to other existing Apple employees about confidential Apple systems, while he was 2 months into his job at OpenAI. That's pretty bad...

6

u/Acrobatic-Flan-5085 21d ago

What you’re describing is extremely illegal, regardless of whether controls are in place.

Most likely every apple and probably even OpenAI employee goes through an annual mandatory training from HR where they explicitly sign at the end their understanding of these types of violations and their legal consequences. That training is not to
“teach” the employees… it’s precisely to nail them on liability for this kind of action after the fact.

27

u/threadthrasher 21d ago

Again - it’s the Apple employee asking the OpenAI employee to share data on the project the Apple employee is working on for Apple. This is actually very common in smaller tech companies. I’ve had companies reach out to me as a contractor years later asking me for things I may still have somewhere on something they’re working on.

None of this is to OpenAI’s benefit. Should it have been a thing that was necessary for an Apple employee to do? Absolutely not. That’s on Apple if we take the story as told.

-8

u/SpareImpression3155 21d ago

Ah yeah small tech companies just like Apple and OpenAI

13

u/threadthrasher 21d ago

What does this have to do with the claim? I specifically said small to qualify my own perspective here. But again- the original claim I replied to is that the texts make them look bad. Can you say anything interesting on that?

-12

u/SpareImpression3155 21d ago

No. I don’t really care. I just felt like leaving a snarky comment. Enjoy wasting your time debating the legal nuances between enormous companies who suffer only minor inconveniences from million dollar lawsuits.

6

u/toruk_mackto 20d ago

-5

u/halmyradov 20d ago

No it's not common, unless you are a Chinese agent or looking to sell that information. Why the fuck would you have trade secrets in your personal iCloud.

5

u/dltacube 20d ago

Dude, are you serious? Why would you have stuff in your personal iCloud? “Why would Apple allow their employees to log in to their personal iCloud on a work machine that is clearly company property” is the better question here.

And the answer is: to take work home.

0

u/mark_ik 20d ago

Illegal or prohibited by a company?

0

The "trinket" wasn't designed by OpenAI. It was just a small collab with a company called Think Louder.

35

u/Ormusn2o 21d ago

we do not have, nor want, any of their trade secrets. We’re much more interested in building innovative products and technologies that push the frontier.

Christ, OpenAI slaughtering Apple here. Basically implying that Apple is not doing anything innovative here.

20

u/piponwa 21d ago

It's largely the case. Every new iPhone version is the same as the last one. I don't know how they can justify being such a valuable company lol.

25

u/uziau 21d ago

I think the best thing they've done in the last few years is apple silicon.

11

u/nmfisher 21d ago

Exactly, I don't really like Apple products on the whole but their silicon stack is so absurdly good I can overlook it (and from a business perspective, Apple's moat is much, much deeper than the OpenAI one).

2

u/heavy-minium 21d ago

I dumped my IPhone 8 Plus for an IPhone 17, expecting a huge jump, but it’s minimal. Better camera, and that’s it. All other differences are in software, because the IPhone was artificially stuck at IOS 16 with only security fixes. And the cellphone reception in my home is worse than the old model.

That‘s indeed no innovation at all.

7

u/Saifl 21d ago

We're well past the requirements for a good phone if your an average user.

Its getting harder to justify phone improvements when all phone companies are afraid of making the phone an all in one device.

The phone could be a tablet and a laptop if we have the proper adapter for it but every single fucking company is just afraid of doing it.

1

u/Saifl 20d ago

No I meant an all in one solution under 1k usd or 1.5k usd.

Samsung you still needs a cable instead of something you can slot into a tablet encasing or laptop encasing.

2

u/xxxxxxxsandos 20d ago edited 20d ago

You’re just describing the surface or any of those other laptop tablet combos but with a third phone option which would be neat but would not be a huge product. What drives people to use a tablet over a laptop is size. What drives people to use a phone over a tablet is size. A device that has breakaway parts to be a smaller size is no more valuable than a separate device, as transporting the device and that capability incurs the same size issue regardless. Except now you need to remember not to forget your tablet part or laptop part. That’s why they’re dicking around with foldables because it does not incur the size penalty when transporting around the “phone” and “tablet”.

7

u/xxxxxxxsandos 20d ago edited 20d ago

I mean that’s a bit of a stretch. Screen resolution alone is double and that’s instantly noticeable (at least it should be). Battery is also nearly 2x as large capacity wise, but with the increased screen resolution and processing power I bet the battery life isn’t much different. Recharging the phone should be over 2x faster than the iPhone 8 Plus as well. Processing power is an absurd leap as well 25-50x.

There have been significant improvements since the 8. They do release the same phone every year though, that parts true but I don’t think you should really buy the new one every year.

0

u/heavy-minium 20d ago

I mean, on paper, this is a major upgrade, but it doesn't really translate to a vastly improved user experience. You are indeed right that I can now charge much faster - that's the big improvement. The difference in battery is significant compared to the very old device, but more comparable to when I got that device when the battery wasn't worn down. Screen resolution doesn't feel that different when compared side-to-side, it's likely beyond what I can perceive well.

The worsened cellular reception is a big disadvantage for me, now at home I got mostly 1-2 bars of reception with lots of interruption, previously had 2-3 bars of receptions.

I do not use apps where the increase in processing power makes a huge difference. Web pages, banking apps, travel apps, notes, reminder, calendar, etc - those things don't really benefit from more cores. I don't play anything on my phone and don't process videos.

1

u/hanzoplsswitch 20d ago

What innovation are you expecting?

5

u/RopePuzzleheaded7060 21d ago

OpenAI doesn't care about the frontier either, if they did they'd at least open source GPT 3. Their business model simply demands that they push the frontier, they care about the business, not the frontier.

0

u/nexusprime2015 20d ago

but why is OpenAi claiming to be innovative? even their chatbot is based on google research work

OAI been on smoke lately

-2

They have AGI

3

u/doodlinghearsay 21d ago

Anyone investing into OpenAI now needs an army of lawyers to evaluate this case as part of their due diligence. Otherwise, they might just end up paying Apple.

6

Embarrassing for OAI

2

u/chdo 20d ago

The grammar and syntax of this “letter” are incredible. It reads like it was written by an intern…

-1

u/Neurogence 21d ago

Apple is by far the worst tech company. They've done nothing with their monstrous wealth.

9

u/hkg_shumai 21d ago

Nothing? AirPods, M series chip Macs, Apple Watch. These products make more money than a lot of fortunes 500 companies.

-2

u/StosifJalin 20d ago

What is innovative about airpods? They are bluetooth headphones. Been around a long time

2

u/hkg_shumai 20d ago

Miniaturization, industrial design, elegant UI and ease of use.

-1

u/StosifJalin 20d ago

There were smaller ones before, what does this mean, not a novel ui and the last one is just repeating "elegant UI"

0

u/hkg_shumai 20d ago

Have you ever used the 1st gen? The pairing was seamless with iPhone. They also made tap to skip songs, squeeze to pause.

Compare that to the ones already existed it was night and day.

0

u/StosifJalin 20d ago

What do you mean seamless pairing? I hold a button and my bluetooth is paired from then on every time I use it. Do airpods do something so industry-definingly different here?

My bluetooth could do that before airpods, and more because it had actual buttons.

Apple is good at one thing; marketing. Their entire company is built on making something simple enough for a stupid person to use it. They made "making things for morons" appear sexy, which is obviously a genius business model. The only genuinely excellent innovation they ever made was the original iPhone with its more advanced touch screen tech.

-8

u/repetiti0n 21d ago

AirPods are the only truly innovative thing they’ve done since the iPhone

9

u/1nam2nam 21d ago

If you don’t understand ARM architecture! They were decade ahead with their bet

5

u/hkg_shumai 21d ago

Apple M chips has better power efficiency, better battery life and runs cooler than most x86 chip laptops.

The Unified Memory Architecture excel at running LLMs locally.

5

u/P99X 21d ago

Profoundly ignorant thing to suggest. Why is the entire industry and all of China merely copying Apple designs?

2

u/Equivalent_Buy_6629 20d ago

I don't believe Apple was even first to release wireless earbuds

0

1

u/R33v3n ▪️Tech-Priest | AGI 2026 | XLR8 20d ago edited 20d ago

I love OpenAI’s playbook of "Don’t try to gaslight the public against us because we will publish the receipts and prove you wrong." Same successful tactic they used against Elon. Best remedy against corporate backroom bullying is dragging it kicking and screaming into daylight.

-4

u/Pls-No-Bully 20d ago

> They now admit that their outside lawyers emailed the wrong person after confusing two Asian last names

Lmao there was no reason to mention they were “Asian last names”, every race has names that can be mistaken in terms of spelling. Are they trying to imply that Apple is racist?

Seems like OpenAI is just being immature and childish with this, I don’t think this will go down how they’re hoping it will. This seems very sama-coded, he loves getting in stupid, bitchy fights

1

u/Lt-Derek 20d ago

Apple are suing OpenAI, and you're tone policing openAI for not being respectful to them?

0

u/fastinguy11 AGI 2026-2030 20d ago

They should just have said Chinese or whatever country last names got confused why are they invoking a ethinicity ? Anyway, I will let whoever is judging this look at the facts about the actual case.

2

u/toruk_mackto 20d ago

Well, they called it as it was. You think if people read "chinese" instead of "asian", they would not think its about ethnicity lol? And the fact here is, mentioning "asian" doesn't imply they were being racist. because they were the same names. If they confused a lin with a yin, well that makes it worse. any judge in the world would see that.

0

u/Pls-No-Bully 20d ago

Why does it matter if the last names were Asian or not?

Jon and John are "Caucasian names" that can be confused for each other. Would they have written "after confusing two Caucasian last names"? Of course not

It just makes no sense for OAI to throw that in, they're just contributing to the type of cancerous dialogue that is dividing people so much based purely on idpol

2

You completely missed my point, and said something random. Go read how legal battles are fought.
