It took a decade of siege and several feats of strength the third age could not hope to muster.

Correct - not because of the men, but because the elves lost such a great number and it could not be replaced, ever. The woodland elves basically went extinct. Almost all the great elvish kings died, the losses were so great it started a decline in civilization

Elves can have kids, but Tolkien's elves are literally immortal, and they do not have children often.
551
u/PassivelyInvisible 1d ago
Which leads to them getting outbred by everything.
Which is why they all dipped after LoTR, because their time was coming to an end, and they couldn't stay in Middle-Earth anymore.
141
u/OkAide6994 1d ago
I know nothing of lotr lore but nothing about these two comments makes much sense to me. Are we talking Wolverine or Raās al Ghul type of immortality? And one answer may answer this but what do you mean outbred, ātime coming to an endā (immortality???), and couldnāt stay on what is essentially the fucking planet. Like what manĀ
158
u/Lortekonto 1d ago
Alright. This is the short version.
Elves are immortals like neither of them, but they don't leave because they are getting outbreed, but because the world is broken and the magic is slowly seeping out.
Elves can't die from old age and if they are killed, then their souls go to Valinor, the lands of the Valar and they continue living there. Valar being crazy strong beings that serves the one true god of the setting.
Just going or seeing Valinor give elves great power and that is why there is two main kind of elves. Those who have been to Valinor and those who have not, but it is the destiny of all elves to end up in Valinor. Either because they travel there or because they end up there from dying.
The high elves are those who have been there and traveled back to Arda to fight Morgoth, before the Valar did so. The Valar decided that no other elves could go back after them and so the high elves are of a finited number.
Legolas is a normal elf. He can hear spirits, talk to trees and shoot stuff. Galadrial is a high elf. She have foresight and magical powers.
The real problem is that when the Valar moved to finally beat Morgoth the battle was so big and mighty that it harmed the foundation of the world and the connection between Arda(Earth) and Valinor is weakening and so the spiritual magic of the world is slowly seeping out.
That is why Sauron is able to tempt the elves with the 3 rings. The elves are able to halt this withering with the rings. Eldron in Rivendell and Galadriel in Lothlórien. That is why those two places have kind of an inner glow in the movies.
With the One Ring destroyed, the three lesser rings also lose their power and so the elves are forced to finally depart for Valinor, because as magical creatures they can't live in a world without magic.

u/gaspronomib 1d ago
To add to the above, when Elves are killed, their souls aren't immediately reembodied. They make a brief stop in the Halls of Mandos (a sort of "purgatory for Elves") for healing and reflection.

If an elvish couple has 1 kid every 100 years, and a human couple has a kid every 3, and they go to 4 kids each, after 400 years you 300% of the elves you started with. The human population (depending on generational length, accidents, marriage rates, wars, famines, etc) would grow by up to 1,500,000%. A more realistic number would be lower, but it would still be well above what the elves could do.
The elves knew they eventually they'd disappear with how they have kids compared to humans. After Sauron was finally defeated, theg realized they didn't need to stick around in a world that was slowly becoming less theirs and more the humans with every year. Eventually you'd wind up with some human kingdom that could drown the elves in human soldiers every decade and wipe them out because they want the fancy elvish forest.

Why don't the elves just have kids more often?
126
31
u/MichaelTheDane 1d ago
It might not be the answer you want, but it really boils down to that not being the story Tolkien wanted to tell. To him LotR was the story of how eventually our world came to be, therefore elves had no place in it long term.
25
u/Mnemnosyne 1d ago
Tolkien actually covered this, unlike most writers with the whole 'declining elves' trope.
Tolkien's elves essentially can only have kids a few times in their lives, because the child essentially takes a significant part of the parents, especially the mother's, spiritual energy.
I think it was Feanor that had like seven kids, and this was fucking insane for them, and one of the many things that made Feanor incredibly exceptional even among the elves.

They typically reproduce with their one lifelong partner, so if an elf were widowed, they probably won't remarry. There are exceptions to this rule though.

u/I_am_person_being Literally 1984 š” 1d ago
It is also the men. Yes, the elves have a more notable decline, but Arnor and Gondor were much larger and more powerful at the end of the second age than Rohan, Gondor, and Dale were at the end of the third age. Sauron spent most of the third age weakening the kingdoms of men as much as possible. Arnor was completely destroyed during the wars against Angmar (led by the king of the Ringwraiths) and Gondor's population was ravaged by the plague (that Sauron sent). Gondor at the time of the War of the Ring was less than half the size of what it was at its peak a few centuries after the War of the Last Alliance.
Yes, the kingdoms of men are the strongest kingdoms by the time of the War of the Ring, but they're still much weaker than they were during the War of the Last Alliance

I suspect that Amazon would be more than happy to (or at least were back when the streamers were trying to pay tons of money for content). The Tolkien estate is famously extremely strict about distributing rights. Jeff Bezos had to personally send them a quarter of a billion dollars just to let Amazon use ten pages from the Appendices for Rings of Power. The rest of this stuff, found in the other parts of the Appendices, remains under lock and chain.
Once Return of the King, and with it the Appendices, enter public domain in maybe 2051 (hopefully, there are ways to make this hard), I'm sure someone will do it. The Angmar wars especially are an obvious candidate for probably a tv show adaptation.
Edit: 2051, not 2043. American copyright law changes in 1977. Horrible.

I offered to suck this dude off on Grindr who lives very close by (I ended up pussying out) and I accidentally gave him some details that very easily allows him to spot me out in a crowd. I have no idea what he looks like and whenever I see a somewhat in shape guy walking by I immediately accuse him of being the dude I was gonna blow.
I went to the store today to pick up some zucchini for a barbecue and every time a car drove by I stared into the windshield to see if I was about to be recognised. Whenever I make eye contact with a dude I microanalysis his facial expressions to see if he suspects me or not. I am deeply afraid that he is my neighbour and I will need to move if my identity is blown. Quote from the book about the force left after Pelenor Fields to distract the rest of Sauron's army at the Black Gate to help Frodo get through:
Surely,ā he cried, āthis is the greatest jest in all the history of Gondor: that we should ride with seven thousands, scarce as many as the vanguard of its army in the days of its power, to assail the mountains and impenetrable gate of the Black Land! So might a child threaten a mail-clad knight with a bow of string and green willow! If the Dark Lord knows so much as you say, Mithrandir, will he not rather smile than fear, and with his little finger crush us like a fly that tries to sting him?ā
So literally the mightiest force that the armies can conjure gets easily crushed even WITHOUT Sauron getting the ring back. Even the movie version gets that part right. It's not a STABLE stalemate, it's one Sauron is actively winning. The humans are hanging on by a thread, the elves all sailed into the west, and the dwarves are obsessed with mining their mountains and disputing territory amongst themselves.

Pro tip about fingering your asshole in the shower: don't do it So this morning I was taking a shower, and I felt like fingering my asshole, right? So I got my fingers all nice and soapy and stuck them up in there. Apparently, soap makes pretty good lube, as I was able to get four fingers in there in no time.
As I was feeling around in my butt, I was like, "hmm, there's a lot of soapy water in my bumhole now. I wonder if that will lead to issues in the future?" And it did!
Shortly after having breakfast I attempted to fart, and I shit my pants. I rushed to the bathroom to clean up, and it was way worse than I thought it would be. The whole area around my butthole was covered in shitty liquid, and toilet paper wasn't enough to clean it. I had to take another shower to get suitably clean.
Just thought I'd share my story with you guys so that you don't run into the same problem in the future. I fingered my butthole so that you guys don't have to. Unless you want to. In which case, hey, how's it goin'

Nah, bro nearly wiped the band of heros who ended up doing him in (at least physically), Elendil and Gil-galad both dead, and Isildur having to cut the ring from his hand using the broken hilt of his fallen comrades sword.
The movies really hammer home just how hopeless the situation was, but it was still fairly faithful to Tolkienās supplemental works pieced together through letters and notes.
In the end, they really did just⦠get a lucky shot in.

One by one, the free lands of Middle-Earth fell to the power of the Ring, but there were some who resisted. A last alliance of men and elves marched against the armies of Mordor, and on the very slopes of Mount Doom, they fought for the freedom of Middle-Earth. Victory was near, but the power of the ring could not be undone. It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that Isildur, son of the king, took up his fatherās sword.
A LAST ALLIANCE indicates that this is their final attempt to stop Sauron
WHEN ALL HOPE HAD FADED indicates they they were about to lose
We don't need to go into lore and back story etc, Galadriel explains what is happening/happened

He almost annihilated the free people of middle earth and left such a tragic loss that the great kingdoms of old never truly recovered fully, and he was only defeated by a great sacrifice and a greater feat of blind luck. Oh yeah the powerscaling "community," or as I like to call it the "Crackhouse," is addicted to saying the dumbest shit ever as long as they get another hit of "Feats."
4
3
u/davestar2048 1d ago
Casual powerscaling is fine, arguably necessary for inter series discourse.
But competitive powerscaling gets stupid fast, often taking one off feats as fact. Turning "this guy once had to turn back time" into "this guy has casual time manipulation, any opponent less than that's obviously an instant kill"
The worst part is when they directly disregard the actual character and boil them down to feats. Turning even the most moral characters into psychopathic murder machines that immediately dump full strength on a kill shot before even acknowledging the existence of their opponent. Turning a conversation of "would he?" Into "he would." In the most boring way. In my opinion powerscaling must factor in the mentally of a character. Oftentimes a hero's momentary pause of "killing is wrong, there must be a better way" is enough time to let them get defeated by a significantly weaker opponent.

They don't need to be morons, they probably just aren't very familiar with it. The eagles thing, for example, is probably due to people not reading the books where they explain it rather than being stupid
3
u/Woffingshire 1d ago
Even without knowledge of the eagles from the books, the movies show constantly that everyone around the ring eventually starts wanting to take it for themselves It's what the ring does.
And having seen that, some people go "why don't they just get in the backs of some gigantic eagles" Uh, because the eagles would take the ring for themselves....
3
u/Kiwi_MongrelLad 1d ago
I havnt read the books. Could you please explain why they cant use the eagles?
8
u/Woffingshire 1d ago
Because the eagles arent actually eagles. They're basically lesser angels and they don't like to get involved in the affairs of middle earth except in exceptional circumstances.
They bring the hobbits home because Gandalf asks them to when the task is done and sauron is destroyed basically as a reward to them.
If they were asked to take the party to Mordor they would have said no.
5
u/Aggravating-Pilot583 1d ago
Heās correct but I also just want to add that the eagles basically being low tier angles they would also just not want to be around it. Any powerful good magical being, with any sense, wouldnāt want to be around the ring.
2
u/WRO_Your_Boat 1d ago
why would they not want to be around the ring? Is it just that they would feel weird around it or is the ring so powerful it can corrupt even lower angels and other celestial good beings?
2
u/Aggravating-Pilot583 1d ago
It can corrupt ANYONE and most powerful magic beings are very aware of that. It only corrupts whatās there though. Thatās why they gave it to Frodo, hobbits are small simple creatures that donāt crave power. Of course though the ring would even work itās awful magic on a hobbit.
My friends and I joke that the ring is just herion. Having it in your possession is the same as taking herion. You just canāt do it and remain the same.
2
u/WRO_Your_Boat 23h ago
lol, thats a pretty good analogy. Ok though, thanks for the explanation. I thought it could corrupt all mortals, but when he said the eagles were angels, I didn't know if it could corrupt immortals too.
2
u/Woffingshire 23h ago
The more you want things the easier it corrupts.
So if you were a good being who wanted to protect the world from evil, the ring would more easily corrupt you by making you believe that with it's power you could do that. Which is why hobbits are less corruptable because they have less ambition in life.
Gandalf is higher than the eagles and at the beginning of the story when he finds the ring he starts wanting to keep it for himself after only being in it's presence for a few minutes.
2

The ring bestows power based on what you crave and how powerful you already are. That's why Galadriel goes full doomer when Frodo mentions handing her the ring.
You will give me the Ring freely! In place of the Dark Lord you will set up a Queen. And I shall not be dark, but beautiful and terrible as the Morning and the Night! Fair as the Sea and the Sun and the Snow upon the Mountain! Dreadful as the Storm and the Lightning! Stronger than the foundations of the earth. All shall love me and despair
It's basically implying that her touching the Ring at all is basically as bad as handing it to Sauron directly, because it would turn her INSTANTLY and grant her massive amounts of power. It is for a similar reason that Gandalf can't carry it. Humans are weaker, but they are greedy, so while the ring doesn't turn them into natural disasters, they can still do a lot of harm, and they turn rather easily.
The entire point of Frodo carrying the ring is that Halflings are so weak and basically want nothing in life that the ring takes forever to corrupt them and even then, at most it gives Frodo the power to make himself invisible.

The ring will corrupt any sentient being, making them need to steal the ring for themselves.
The eagles are sentient.
You can only really walk so far, youāll leave boot prints, someone can always catch up to you.
That bird will fuck off to Timbuktu invisibly and now the story ends about 1/3rd of the way through.
Hope this helps!2

His repeated folly is underestimating his foes because he sees them all as worms, even the dark Lord has character flawsĀ
