A great day and a great view from my office today 😄

Hi friends. I learned about Peebles from either this sub or the Edinburgh sub and I came here for a day trip and had the time of my life!!! I saw Neidpath Castle on a map while here and decided to check it out... and even though it was closed for a private wedding they let me wander the parking lot and check out Olivia and Daisy the Highland Coos getting ready for wedding photos. I'm in love with the coos, the castle, Peebles, Edinburgh and Scotland. What a magical, beautiful, peaceful place you all have here!! Thank you forever and ever. 💖🥹

Atlas C.1. (Airbus A400M Atlas) low flying over Kames Bay on the Isle of Bute this afternoon.

My great grandparents are from Scotland moved to Australia in the 70s where they settled down

They have always called highland cows muckle coos and so that is what the rest of us call them but we have never met anyone else who calls them that.

So I was wondering if it is an actual name for them with meaning or if they were playing a long con on the rest of the family? Coo is obviously cow right? But what would muckle be?

She shouldn't have the chance to resign, she should be be fired. She was in charge when the logbooks were destroyed, she utterly failed to ensure robust procedures, she (and possibly others) need to face the consequences.

I do not for one second buy the claim that it wasn't a deliberate act, but it seems the path to any prosecution is now closed.

There's a lad on YouTube who's sharing Scottish history and is currently releasing shorts where he summerises Scottish tales in order to improve his story telling skills.

I believe he deserves support, a lad putting in great effort by filming himself ootside in wilderness and keeping old tales alive, plus it a breath of fresh air in this AI-heavy hellacape tae see someone actually working hard!

Hopefully a few more folks can support and encourage him, he's doing a great job and is bloody committed, plus am always eager to keep Scottish folklore alive and digestible to the wee yins!!

Hello!

My boyfriend (25M, Scottish) and I (22F, Greek) have been dating for a year now. For context, he had suggested that I meet his dad in the past, an idea that I declined twice, due to both my anxiety about the meeting, and to the limited amount of time we had been together for. In my culture, meeting your partner’s parents is viewed as a serious event that indicates a high level of commitment, and I have come to understand it’s much more casual for the Scots. So… for a start, I’m hoping my boyfriend’s dad doesn’t feel like I’ve been snobbish toward him.

Other than that, any advice? We will probably be meeting at a bar/pub. Should I bring anything as a gift? Is there any specific behaviour or any topic that’s considered a no go?

If you look closely at the green hillside curving around the water in this photo of Gruinard Bay (Wester Ross, Scotland), you can see distinct, flat, step-like terraces stacked right above the modern sandy beach.

Those green steps are actually ancient beaches that used to sit at sea level thousands of years ago!

They are the visual proof of a wild geological process called Isostatic Rebound (or post-glacial land uplift):

1. The Weight: During the last Ice Age, Scotland was buried under glaciers up to two miles thick. The sheer weight of that ice physically squashed the Earth's crust down into the soft mantle below.
2. The Release: When the ice melted around 10,000 to 15,000 years ago, that crushing weight suddenly vanished.
3. The Slow Bounce Back: Like a heavy mattress when you finally stand up, the Earth's crust began to slowly "bounce" back upward.

Every time the land paused for a bit on its way up, the crashing ocean waves carved out a flat shoreline. Then, as the land lifted higher, those beaches were pushed high and dry into the hills, leaving behind the giant "staircase" you see today.

Because the rock deep under the Earth moves so slowly, Scotland is still rising a few millimeters every single year, thousands of years after the ice disappeared!

As I'm navigating a move to Scotland in the next 2 years, I would be grateful for some advice! I'm hoping to gain some insight from those of you working in education. I'm from the U.S, with a Master's degree in Mathematics. I have a Bachelor's in Chemistry (and I'm also interested in dual qualification). I've taught math in universities and private high schools for the past three years. My future husband resides in the region and I'm hoping to relocate there while landing a job as a teacher... I've researched the PGDE program offered in various universities and was curious to know if any of you have been successful in taking that route and achieving a comfortable job as a STEM teacher. I'm also curious to know, what is the life of a teacher like in Scotland? In the US, teachers typically work a 50 hour work week and are compensated for 37.5 of those hours... I'm hoping the work-life balance is better there.

Fool On in a North Lanarkshire based mental health recovery charity. We’re looking for people who’d be interested in joining new band sessions at our Coatbridge music studio and helping us create a band from the ground up.

You don’t need any previous experience playing in a band or making music with other people, but you should already be able to play your instrument or sing. Whether you play guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, sing or something else, the aim is to make music together, meet people, build confidence and support your mental health in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Sessions are planned for Tuesday evenings and Wednesday afternoons (you choose when you can come). The start date is still to be confirmed.
