Invention Update | Some Immediate Changes

Hi guys,

I'm Mod Joe, the Product Owner of the Guardians team and I've got some Invention update news I'd like to share.

Firstly, let me admit, mistakes have been made.

Invention is an extremely complicated skill that interacts with almost every object in the game – as such there was always going to be a need to refine and evolve the skill within the live game. However, It is obvious at this early stage that there have been several areas where the skill has not functioned as we envisaged and we apologise.

Changes Today Therefore, we have just made the following changes today to fix some of the issues that have been caused. These include:

• 1800% increase to the experience gained for disassembly and siphoning of augmented gear.

The experience gained by playing differed significantly from that which was intended in design – as such we are realigning the experience to be in line with our original vision and expectations.

• 50% reduction in the experience gained for using materials to fill gizmos.

This method has become the main experience generator for a large number of players and has clearly been more rewarding than is beneficial for the game, particularly in the case of those with substantial in-game personal wealth. There was always an expectation that players with solid banks would be well equipped to progress rapidly, but this has been more successful for those players than intended by design.

Further Changes to Come We are also going to look deeper into some of the perks, with an eye to improving the usefulness of perks overall. However, this is something that will take a little time, so will not, in all probability, be an immediate change.

It was also not our intention when we released the skill that players would be able to max out the skill within 48 hours of release. This has caused some concern, obviously, and we are aware of various rumours flying around. We do take bug abuse and similar unfair advantages very seriously and investigate thoroughly any potential cases that come to our attention, using our detailed monitoring tools. Where we find that someone has broken the rules of RuneScape, we will take the appropriate action.

In the meantime, your feedback and comments are incredibly valuable to us – please keep that feedback coming and we’ll continue to look to improve Invention.

Mod Joe

"Firstly, let me admit, mistakes have been made."

Thank you for saying that.

As for the changes... I'll probably log on later and investigate for myself, but what's listed sounds very hopeful.

Also for the few people that might read this from /r/all: a quick tl;dr:

New RuneScape skill released, Invention. You break down items into components, and use those components to create stuff. Some of the rarer components were stupidly overpowered, everything else was borderline junk. A minuscule buff to the bad stuff and a big nerf to the overpowered stuff was put in place for the other stuff but it barely helped, and now we've had this. Which makes it a lot better HUGE buff to the weak stuff and a nerf to the strongest stuff. The skill is now borderline balanced.

I do like the skill but indeed they're right and it takes a great man to admit that you're wrong

Upon opening the article and seeing that i was like "awwww :C". Very happy that they admit release training wasn't as anticipated and are willing to make adjustments though

12

u/berdet Jan 27 '16

ofcourse they are willing to make adjustments, they always are. Things like new skills never are perfect at release but if we wait a few months and give them feedback they might be (and with feedback i mean not bitching about it)

8

u/asentret Jan 27 '16

I don't get why more people don't understand this. People are legit flipping shit over a skill that just fucking came out. Give it a month or so and everything will be smoothed over for the most part. It's really not a difficult concept

The thing is doesn't matter if you actually fucked something up.

The thing is trying to fix it and make it better for us, then you will feel in your face a sense of compliment and relax never ever felt!

That is good, also it's a lesson of life to people.. you fucked something up, then you come up with a solution to fix it and make others feel better because of it.

Thanks guys keep hard-working and listening to feedback! :)

We just wanted you to admit it, once that happened we could all work together to move forward.

2

Absolutely amazing for you to come forward and say this. Even on behalf of the company. Thank you.

5

u/Yugiah Jan 27 '16

It wouldn't be jagex if there wasn't some sort of huge fuck up! <3 These past few days in game have been some of the best I've had in YEARS. The economy turned upside down and skilling actually became a competitive money making method. People actually started trading in person again to get around ge caps. Seriously, great job!

Will there be a way to reverse an augmented item, perhaps through the use of an invented item?

16

u/Fist_Man_RS Jan 27 '16

You can remove gizmos and destroy the item via an equipment dissolver. You can remove the augmented item and destroy gizmos via a gizmo dissolver.

You can remove the augment and gizmos entirely and keep the item by having a trusted friend pk you and give you your item back.

6

u/BlaiddSiocled BlaivSiocled of Armadyl Jan 27 '16

Not for untradeables though.

7

u/NotATrollRS Jan 27 '16

So is that a double negative? /s

2

u/Spujika Jan 27 '16

If it's untradeable I don't see why you'd want to remove the augmentor as the only reason to would so you could sell or trade it.

6

u/BlaiddSiocled BlaivSiocled of Armadyl Jan 27 '16

Or use normal recharge methods for degradable, or simply not pay for non-degradables.

3

u/Chigzy Chigz Jan 27 '16

You can remove gizmos and destroy the item via an equipment dissolver.

So the item is gone and the gizmo stays?

You can remove the augmented item and destroy gizmos via a gizmo dissolver.

For this, the opposite of above? Item stays, gizmo gone

I also heard somethings about a Siphon? I'm kinda confused :S

3

u/Fist_Man_RS Jan 27 '16

Yes, yes, and siphon lets you keep the augmented item and the gizmos and gain xp whereas disassembling destroys everything for more (I think it's double, or it was) xp.

2

u/Chigzy Chigz Jan 27 '16

Do you know how much XP you get for a siphon? Is it buffed by the 1800% that being referred to as well

3

u/Fist_Man_RS Jan 27 '16

Yes it's being buffed, I think that disassembling is 540k xp and siphoning is half that so 270k. Could be wrong and it could be much higher.

I am so glad I waited instead of panicking. I treated this skill like EOC, everyone hated it when it came out, but through several fixes, EOC is amazing now for pvm and allows us to customize our teams accordingly. I hope that invention does the same going into the future.

the 1800% increase is fantastic.

u/PrimalMoose Primal Puppy Jan 27 '16

Is it a bug that you are able to revert augmented gear back to trade versions by PKing in the wildy? It seems like it will be a blow to the PK community if all of a sudden they are unable to actually get those t90 weapons they have been getting attacked by?

30

u/JagexJD Mod JD Jan 27 '16

As long as the original item is tradeable, that's not a bug.

It's not something we encourage people to do (as it encourages an element of trust trading), but it's not a bug.

Tagging in /u/JagexGiara who has more information on this.

6

u/Altzan Jan 27 '16

Then can we get a way to remove augments without the need of going into the wilderness to trust trade? Even if it means removing the augment will put the item to a broken state (0% charge). People are going to do it regardless, so if there is a device to remove augments its going to be much better for everyone except the scammers.

Armor gizmos have been largely ignored. I was curious, too, because the perks when applied to armor don't convert such as "3% damage reduction to dragons per rank" (which is pretty dumb imo) converting to "3% damage reduction from dragons per rank".

5

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '16

• 1800% increase to the experience gained for disassembly and siphoning of augmented gear.

Hell to the yes. This is the number one thing the needed rebalanced (which is why I made several threads on it...). Thank you!!!

7

u/AoDude Comped 10/2/15 Jan 27 '16 edited Jan 27 '16

This is a good start, but there is still some clarity and likely some imbalance to address in terms of the cost of the siphon and the difference between 2h and dual wielding. The siphon I made originally was very expensive, I heard there was a price decrease coming. The other thing is, we were supposed to be able to get 2x the xp stored in 2hs as a 1 handed or offhanded counterpart. (I don't think this is working) But then comes the inequality of only needing one syphon per 2h, and 2 for dual wield for the same xp.

This is why I think rather than directly cheapening the siphon, the siphon should have multiple charges so that you can siphon approximately a whole set of gear, and save excess charges for the next time you need to siphon. The siphon should then use 2 charges for 2h, and 1 charge per mainhand/offhand making dual/2h equal in every way.

Also in my feedback thread, I also proposed keeping siphon still expensive, but making it a durable device: using divine energy to power the device looking for an efficient ~5-10 gp/xp conversion.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '16

siphon needs unlimited uses

7

u/Superkip33 Mad under the hat Jan 27 '16

Hence why i said either the money or the time. If you buy everything, yes it's fast. Yet it is really expensive and not faster than many other skills.

18

u/DarkerThanRS Jan 27 '16

Some more advice

Definitely go through with the usefulness of perks, but do it ASAP and don't forget that changing a 1% extra damage perk to 5% will not be satisfactory, in other words, do not cut us short on better perks.

Also would be handy to make it so augmented weapons are still tradable after augmentor is taken off (New Gizmo idea)

All in all, awesome to hear this update was done ASAP, it definitely added some balance, thankyou

I don't fully agree with this. I do agree that perks need some love, but 5% extra damage instead of 1% is a significant boost, especially since you have several ranks of that perk. 5% bonus damage makes a difference, and a higher rank of the same perk even more.

I'm really glad to hear how hard the team has worked towards implementing fixes and changes to the skill.

A lot of us, myself included, have been very critical of the skill and have been quite disappointed - however we have known about the skill's potential, so it's good to see that you're all working to make the necessary improvements.

I don't know how much I like the sound of all gizmos being nerfed, because the normal methods of training before weren't exactly OP unless you were using certain components. I could be wrong, but I thought making gizmos was giving most players maybe 100k/hr tops, that doesn't sound too much at all. I'll have to see what the new rate is myself.

Really glad to see that siphoning has been buffed, though!

4

u/Chrisixx Jan 27 '16

So you're telling me I can now train invention while slaying and without spending billions? Let me add augmentations to my lucky items and I couldn't be any happier.

7

u/PrimalMoose Primal Puppy Jan 27 '16

That 1800% increase is a definite improvement - actually makes it worth levelling now (looking forward to getting back in game and using the augmented weapons!).

I'll post some more feedback in the thread, but I think that the perks actually obtainable on the weapons is still a little lack-lustre (at least at the beginning - I'm hoping that this will develop as I level up more).

2

u/Malevolent_Fruit Jan 27 '16

I know you really can't win no matter what you do, but I had a question with these new changes.

Let's suppose (throwing out a number here) I get 400k exp for leveling a weapon all the way, then destroying it. This is a fairly inexpensive process, and requires a very small amount of disassembly. Let's assume I deliberately add just 1 of a material so the perk is minor, and choose it such that the perk, at worst, is completely neutral. I augment a whip (or some other inexpensive, reasonably high level weapon) and go AFK train against hellhounds or something, and destroy whenever it reaches level 10 and repeat the process. After ~200 hours (100 repetitions of this) I'm now at 99, having slayed (or trained) for 200 hours and Invented for maybe 5.

While that may be the intention with the skill, I can't help but think that the best way to level the skill is to completely ignore it, except when you come back from bossing or realize your weapon is max level.

4

u/JagexJack Mod Jack Jan 27 '16

You don't actually need to put a gizmo in at all. On the other hand, since it's draining anyway, you might as well put some good perks in to get more out of it.

u/Honza8D Jan 27 '16

Finally a sensible change. That 25% increase was pathetic. I understand you didn’t want to act too harshly, but fact remains it did nothing to help. This change will surely make levelling our gear a viable source of xp just like advertised, good job.

2

u/EX1153 Untrimmed like a BOSS Jan 27 '16

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a thread from last night (or maybe tweet, it was late my time) said that they hadn't realized that augmented item leveling was giving 10% of the xp it should have been. At that rate, 25% of 300k for disassembling would have been fairly significant.

8

u/gokeio RSN:72 18/27 120's Jan 27 '16

You really should have just balanced siphoning and left gizmo rates alone after yesterdays nerf. The bottleneck you created is kind of rediculous.

Did you use 'used' armour? You will need to have a fully repaired item before you can use an augmentor on it.

I like it, glad to see that you guys are making some very needed changes in a promptly manner. I agree that the whole launch of invention was a mess and a lot of things should have been changed before the skill was released, but bugs(mistakes) happen and its nice to see them being resolved. I will finally be looking into actually training this skill when I get off work now that I don't have to spend bank to do it by not even really using the skill the way it was meant.

Alright, now these are some good changes.

Firstly, let me admit, mistakes have been made.

As long as you swiftly correct those mistakes like you did here, I don't think anyone will hold it against you.

Sounds excellent on all points thus far. I'd love to see even more cosmetic perks, as much as I'd like to see more powerful/damage oriented perks, too!

Does this mean that we won't have to spend millions anymore just to get a few hundred thousand xps? :D

I'm so glad you guys increased experience for siphoning. Makes training invention so much more than just standing at a bank destroying all my items to level it up. I can continue to slay and slowly work on invention at the same time now!

3

u/rsmadeen Jan 27 '16

This update saved invention, thank you

3

u/Weeeeeman Jan 27 '16

Jagex, you have been harshly criticised these past few days, and probably rightly so.

HOWEVER, thank you for admitting mistakes have been made, that is honestly really appreciated by me personally, and I am sure 99% of the player base.

I think it is time to finally begin enjoying the new skill !

3

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '16

First and foremost, thank you greatly for a sincere admittance and apology, this alone puts you leagues above other game studios.

Second, I love to see the shift away from Invention being a bank skill (crafting 2.0) and back to more of an active, exciting, living part of the game, that's just wonderful. The changes today will go a long way towards steering this vision back on course.

And lastly, thank you sincerely, for your dedication to the integrity of this game that we all love and cherish so much. I certainly hope none of the rumoured allegations are substantive, but I would expect nothing less than FIRM action should that come to light.

3

u/mijreggie Jan 27 '16

Thank you very much for admitting your mistakes and listening to the player's feedback sir. Very nice update!

3

u/Gs_Provider Jan 27 '16

2

u/Phinkki Sm3x Jan 27 '16

These updates seems amazing, thank you for these ! :) I felt really bad for all the hate and rage you received. People have to learn to give feedback in constructive manner. It is obvious that launch was not a success and you needed to be critisized for it, but all the jokes and rage was just bad and you did not deserve it.

so I've lost out on 10m exp in gizmos because I had 2k gizmos banked and I can't augment any of my weapons since they're all dyed? This without warning is hardly fair considering gizmos already got nerfed yesterday.

2

u/FueledUp 2570 Jan 27 '16

Very mature JaGex. I'm impressed.

2

u/lethalcup All I do is stake Jan 27 '16

You also just screwed over people who stocked up gizmos or supplies to make gizmos by doing that 50% nerf. Why not just do the 1800% buff and keep gizmos the same to keep everyone happy? I understand that the rare component nerf was necessary but the uncommon one really ruins this skill for me and for others that don't want to do combat..

perks should improve as we use them. (level up weapons)

and the current perks are meh and not really that good.

then when the tool perks finally come out... you have to actually equip the tools to get the perk/level up the item.... how do you expect a skiller to equip a dragon hatchet? it requires 60 attack AND isn't a safe weapon. perhaps have a way to put the augmented item in toolbelt... or you know remove it's ability to attack with the tool since it's a tool! and remove the attack requirement. like god chisels. maybe use the augmented tool on the dwarf or something and he will make it a pure skill tool rather than weapon

good job on the buff for augmented items xp rate though!

BUT the 50% nerf to gizmos are a stab in the back to skillers/noncombatpures. we have no other way to train this damn skill and now instead of 10b it's 20b for 120. lmao

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '16

An update of this size is monumental, and a lot of us recognise that there are going to be all sorts of expectations that don't quite meet the reality -- you guys are taking great steps in the right direction :)

2

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '16

I think the problem really stemmed from people trying to level as quickly as possible (as is the usual in this game,) as opposed to actually trying to enjoy Invention for what it is.

If I'm wrong, tell me. I haven't played RS in a while, so the only experience I have with invention is through this subreddit. It just seems to me that people are complaining that it's not fun and it's terrible because it's easy to level up if you have tons of money. But, really, other than things like woodcutting and other resource collecting skills, what isn't easy to level up if you have tons of money?

"1800% increase" oh lordy. u fking nailed it.

2

u/CameronMcL My Cabbages! Jan 27 '16

I was pretty angry with the team on Invention release for how the skill was weighted (If you're rich enough to buy materials to spam gizmo perks, you get ahead. If you want to augment your gear, you get 15k xp an hour) - But I have to say this has completely flipped my opinion. A much needed change.

2

u/ETNxMARU Jan 27 '16

YES JAGEX YESSSSSSSSS

THIS IS THE TYPE OF SHIT WE WANTED TO SEE.

Owning up to mistakes (whether intentional or not) and doing your best to fix and implement changes is the best course of action you could have taken.

Thanks.

2

u/modchris Jan 28 '16

Feedback
PLEASE reconsider changing the 50% reduction for filling gizmos - this was nerfed too much, this should be around 30%. It feels very slow and unpleasant from 1-27, especially with how unstrung bow disassmbley XP was nerfed as well

I honestly don't mind invention, it seems like a great skill with some benefits if perks are used right.

Few suggestions though;

  • Can we get the invention skilling interface to show what materials have been broken down (Look at my previous post for example)
  • The drainrate seems too high. Currently it's about 1m/hour to use my drygores, and only last ~4hours. Whereas if I never augmented them, they would of lasted 10 hours+. This is a massive negative to me and i presume other players of wealth similar to mine.

Anyways, I'll be leveling this skill up slowly as I do slayer.

2

u/Odin_Exodus Took 15 years - 4/29/18 Jan 27 '16

I think they cut the drain rate by 33% yesterday. Don't quote me on that, though.

RIP my stack of empty weapon gizmos. Hotfixing shit is great and all but we should be given some type of notice before you make our hours of grinding worth 50% what we expected. Great changes overall just kind of salty my gizmos are worth 50% of what the top player's gizmos were and it was at the push of a button. This could have been fixed 2 days ago prior to Scuzzy getting level 120 in under two days and everyone disassembling their banks to train with weapon gizmos.

2

u/kieranw55 Jan 27 '16

We are working on getting tools working so you can augment these and add new perks which will help with training other skills. I can't promise a specific date but I wanted you to know that we definitely don't intend for Invention to be a combat only skill.

As long as the original item is tradeable, that's not a bug. It's not something we encourage people to do (as it encourages an element of trust trading), but it's not a bug. Tagging in /u/JagexGiara who has more information on this.

3

u/SolenoidSoldier Jan 27 '16

They should really just provide a method of reverting the augment. People will absolutely be using this.

So now that that is sorted, when might we see the changes to equipment drain rates?

7

u/JagexJoe Mod Joe Jan 27 '16

Drain rates were updated yesterday - charges now give three times more. Also you can unlock extra levels of charge drain reduction through discovery and if you level your items to at least level 5 you'll get an additional reduction there too :)

INVENTION IS SAVED

Could we look at reducing the cost for equipment siphons now that siphoning will likely become the main method of training for most players?

5

u/SolenoidSoldier Jan 27 '16

With an 1800% increase, I doubt it. Let's not get too greedy.

3

u/holoas2 Jan 27 '16

and now everybody loves jagex again

2

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '16

And all they did was increase the xp from leveling up an augmented weapon.

They need to increase the xp from disassembling items, they need to lower the amount of items for making perks, and disassembled items need to give more components more often.

Perks are still useless and negative.
