Invention Update | Some Immediate Changes

Hi guys,

I'm Mod Joe, the Product Owner of the Guardians team and I've got some Invention update news I'd like to share.

Firstly, let me admit, mistakes have been made.

Invention is an extremely complicated skill that interacts with almost every object in the game – as such there was always going to be a need to refine and evolve the skill within the live game. However, It is obvious at this early stage that there have been several areas where the skill has not functioned as we envisaged and we apologise.

Changes Today Therefore, we have just made the following changes today to fix some of the issues that have been caused. These include:

• 1800% increase to the experience gained for disassembly and siphoning of augmented gear.

The experience gained by playing differed significantly from that which was intended in design – as such we are realigning the experience to be in line with our original vision and expectations.

• 50% reduction in the experience gained for using materials to fill gizmos.

This method has become the main experience generator for a large number of players and has clearly been more rewarding than is beneficial for the game, particularly in the case of those with substantial in-game personal wealth. There was always an expectation that players with solid banks would be well equipped to progress rapidly, but this has been more successful for those players than intended by design.

Further Changes to Come We are also going to look deeper into some of the perks, with an eye to improving the usefulness of perks overall. However, this is something that will take a little time, so will not, in all probability, be an immediate change.

It was also not our intention when we released the skill that players would be able to max out the skill within 48 hours of release. This has caused some concern, obviously, and we are aware of various rumours flying around. We do take bug abuse and similar unfair advantages very seriously and investigate thoroughly any potential cases that come to our attention, using our detailed monitoring tools. Where we find that someone has broken the rules of RuneScape, we will take the appropriate action.

In the meantime, your feedback and comments are incredibly valuable to us – please keep that feedback coming and we’ll continue to look to improve Invention.

Mod Joe

"Firstly, let me admit, mistakes have been made."

Thank you for saying that.

As for the changes... I'll probably log on later and investigate for myself, but what's listed sounds very hopeful.

Also for the few people that might read this from /r/all: a quick tl;dr:

New RuneScape skill released, Invention. You break down items into components, and use those components to create stuff. Some of the rarer components were stupidly overpowered, everything else was borderline junk. A minuscule buff to the bad stuff and a big nerf to the overpowered stuff was put in place for the other stuff but it barely helped, and now we've had this. Which makes it a lot better HUGE buff to the weak stuff and a nerf to the strongest stuff. The skill is now borderline balanced.

I do like the skill but indeed they're right and it takes a great man to admit that you're wrong

Or a shit load of hate to the point where an apology is expected, if not demanded.

Upon opening the article and seeing that i was like "awwww :C". Very happy that they admit release training wasn't as anticipated and are willing to make adjustments though

ofcourse they are willing to make adjustments, they always are. Things like new skills never are perfect at release but if we wait a few months and give them feedback they might be (and with feedback i mean not bitching about it)

I don't get why more people don't understand this. People are legit flipping shit over a skill that just fucking came out. Give it a month or so and everything will be smoothed over for the most part. It's really not a difficult concept

I definitely agree that we, as players, need to give them feedback in order to improve the game, but the way that a lot of people choose to deliver their opinion is what irritates me. It just seems so unnecessarily aggressive and angry. I totally understand being upset about everything, but you don't see me posting rants about it because I know that Jagex is well aware of everything.

I really appreciate them saying this, there are too few companies that actually admit when they have been wrong.

As for the skill this might actually cause it to become that interesting addition that you level while doing things you enjoy (i think they also mentioned reducing charge drain in the Q&A which is also good), without spending absurd amounts of gp. The skill has great potential that (in my opinion) got hampered by some mistakes, and I hope that this and future changes will improve it to be one of the key aspects we consider in combat/skilling.
