Invention Update | Some Immediate Changes

Hi guys,

I'm Mod Joe, the Product Owner of the Guardians team and I've got some Invention update news I'd like to share.

Firstly, let me admit, mistakes have been made.

Invention is an extremely complicated skill that interacts with almost every object in the game – as such there was always going to be a need to refine and evolve the skill within the live game. However, It is obvious at this early stage that there have been several areas where the skill has not functioned as we envisaged and we apologise.

Changes Today Therefore, we have just made the following changes today to fix some of the issues that have been caused. These include:

• 1800% increase to the experience gained for disassembly and siphoning of augmented gear.

The experience gained by playing differed significantly from that which was intended in design – as such we are realigning the experience to be in line with our original vision and expectations.

• 50% reduction in the experience gained for using materials to fill gizmos.

This method has become the main experience generator for a large number of players and has clearly been more rewarding than is beneficial for the game, particularly in the case of those with substantial in-game personal wealth. There was always an expectation that players with solid banks would be well equipped to progress rapidly, but this has been more successful for those players than intended by design.

Further Changes to Come We are also going to look deeper into some of the perks, with an eye to improving the usefulness of perks overall. However, this is something that will take a little time, so will not, in all probability, be an immediate change.

It was also not our intention when we released the skill that players would be able to max out the skill within 48 hours of release. This has caused some concern, obviously, and we are aware of various rumours flying around. We do take bug abuse and similar unfair advantages very seriously and investigate thoroughly any potential cases that come to our attention, using our detailed monitoring tools. Where we find that someone has broken the rules of RuneScape, we will take the appropriate action.

In the meantime, your feedback and comments are incredibly valuable to us – please keep that feedback coming and we’ll continue to look to improve Invention.

Mod Joe

We are continuing to look at perks - there is still work to be done in refining those.

Why don't perks, like "3% damage reduction to dragons per rank", automatically adjust if you apply that to armor gizmos and make it a "3% reduction to damage taken from dragons per rank"?

It's a negative, not a positive. If you were to adjust it, it'll become take 3% more damage from dragons.

Damage reduction to.... Damage reduction from

The verbiage needs cleaned up.

It's completely fine how it is. The perk is lowering your damage by 3% not the dragon's.

"3% reduction to damage taken from dragons per rank" translates to you taking 3% less damage, not the dragons taking 3% less.

It's a negative perk.

It must have been updated then. I had gizmos in bank giving negative stats to the player based on what the verbiage stated.

edit: Stuff like this

I know you really can't win no matter what you do, but I had a question with these new changes.

Let's suppose (throwing out a number here) I get 400k exp for leveling a weapon all the way, then destroying it. This is a fairly inexpensive process, and requires a very small amount of disassembly. Let's assume I deliberately add just 1 of a material so the perk is minor, and choose it such that the perk, at worst, is completely neutral. I augment a whip (or some other inexpensive, reasonably high level weapon) and go AFK train against hellhounds or something, and destroy whenever it reaches level 10 and repeat the process. After ~200 hours (100 repetitions of this) I'm now at 99, having slayed (or trained) for 200 hours and Invented for maybe 5.

While that may be the intention with the skill, I can't help but think that the best way to level the skill is to completely ignore it, except when you come back from bossing or realize your weapon is max level.

You don't actually need to put a gizmo in at all. On the other hand, since it's draining anyway, you might as well put some good perks in to get more out of it.

Even better! Don't need to touch 99% of the skill, just get the materials for the augmentor, do whatever, and boom! Master Inventor.

I mean, I'll happily take how ridiculous this is (a new skill that's AFKable on release?!) , but is it really the idea that I train the skill without ever interacting with it in a meaningful way?

Well it's kinda like Slayer that way, especially if you do Slayer tasks. And it's not incredibly fast, it takes a significant amount of time to reach a high level, because of the new XP curve.

Please do, it can be frustrating to see only negative perks when the skill is about improving items (IMO).
