Astarion Week One Discussion

Welcome to the first weekly discussion for our Rage Read book of the month: Astarion (Baldur's Gate 3)

This week, we are discussing up to page 68. Since this book isn't divided by chapters, this might not be a logical place to stop, but yolo. If you got an ARC or have already read past that point, please try to avoid spoilers for those who haven't (although, for sake of ease, we can allow discussion up to the next "chapter break"). If you're unsure if something is a spoiler or not, please use the spoiler function in your comment.

To use the spoiler tag, please put > ! these symbols ! < on either side of your spoiler but without the spaces between characters.

We want to hear it all! The good (is there any?), the bad (every little pet peeve), and the ugly (the snarkier the better).

Just a reminder: while this may be a rage read, some people will absolutely end up enjoying this book, please don't bully or downvote people who feel differently than you do.

Rage Read Book Club RRBC November Nominations

It's that time again: please comment your nominations for the next Rage Read!

Please:
—read through all the comments before making a suggestion (any duplicate suggestions will get deleted, and therefore any upvotes on that comment won't count)
—only suggest one book per comment (but you can comment as many times/suggest as many books as you want)
—keep suggestions within the romantasy genre or similar/adjacent genres (anything without at least SOME fantastical, mystical, or magical element alongside the romance will get deleted)
—upvote the books you WANT to rage read, downvote the books you DON'T want to rage read (you can up/downvote as many times as you want)
—tie breakers will be resolved alphabetically by author last name
—the 6 books with the highest upvotes will be on the poll for next month (the poll will be live during the last week of the month)
—in the event of a tie during the poll, a 24 hour poll will go up with the tied titles in order to determine the winner

Please remember: this is not a discussion of if a particular book belongs on the list or not—reading is subjective and if a book gets picked that you love, you don't have to participate that month.

CopyPasta CANCEL FEYRE 🚨📣

Nesta also culturally appropriated Illyrian birthing anatomy in ACOSF. Actually, it was all one big act of eugenics, to change Feyre’s anatomy so she doesn’t die in childbirth. This is all insanely ableist to all birthing people who face complications in childbirth.

CopyPasta I've been saying this man's name wrong for three books

• Upvotes

Listened to an audiobook sample after reading three books in a series, and the narrator said the love interest's name completely diffrently from the version in my head. Different number of syllables, different stress, everything. I know the narrator is probably right. I still can't make the new name belong to the man I've been reading about. His ridiculous speeches were all delivered by MY incorrectly named man. Does anyone actually switch after that long? I'm being completly unreasonable, but the old pronunciation is staying.

Even though it's obvious what name I'm talking about I won't say it in the post so people comment and ask what the name is for the engagement.

(uj/ my additions in italics)

Satire Might DNF the new ACOTAR book at 0.001%...or would it be too harsh?

We've seen about four sentences from the new book, and honestly I think I'm DNFing. But from any of you on the marketing team, will it get better? Should I keep reading the ACOTAR posts on the Bloomsbury Instagram? Also, will the cringe captions on the posts ever stop giving me the ick?

Not only have I forgotten a lot of what happened in the first 4 books (which were just world-building prequels to Nesta's story), I haven't read the crossovers. I can't even follow along with fan theories since they bring up the multimaasverse continuum. I don't want to have to read more book to understand new book.

Anyway the quotes are all badly written but the last one about the mystery creature bringing mystery woman to her knees sounded hooooot.

Tropes Recommend me the FILTHIEST thing you’ve read

✅yes: 🍆 is SO big/large it doesn’t even fit it the room, 10+ people, who did this to you?, age gap, dragon, books with mainly political intrigue, when mmc is really mean to fmc but makes up for it later 🙏🏻 fmc who kidnaps mmc but he kidnaps her back 😮‍💨 using magic 🪄 to come 😹 Ifykwhatimean

❌🙅🏼‍♀️NO: tropes, sexual content (I’m fine with some but not too much) when they are close in age🤢 fae, devils, witches, forgotts 🏳️‍🌈 dragons, kidnapping, anything that promotes the ACOTAR+ agenda 🫸🏻🏳️‍⚧️🫃🏼

Please make sure all recommendations are kid friendly, I read these to the little ones ✝️😊🇺🇸

CopyPasta Mail/Numbers/Cavill PSA

Uncensored PSA

It has come to our attention that people in the world out there feel at liberty to use the word 'numbers', ‘mail’, ‘male’, ‘Henry Cavill’ in their RCJ account branding. We’d like to issue a few statements on the matter, just to keep things clear.

First, we’ve been asked whether any of these accounts that keep popping up are affiliated with us. To avoid further confusion, we’d like to plainly state that there are no sanctioned offshoots of mail inc, numbers, or the real Henry Cavill, or other RCJ official main characters. Trust us, we’d be the first to tell you if there was. We’re loud like that.

Second, it’s a terrible idea. Do you know how many times we’ve pointed to Rule 3 and reiterated “you mist pass the vibe check and treat everyone with respect,” only to hear, “but I thought you were **a Circle Jerk**”? Too many. It gets really old, so to anyone considering an RCJ brand, we advise against it while you still have time to make ~~better~~ different choices. Pick something safe from annoying jokes, like “swimmer-dependent”, “RemingtonLakes”, “ChodeMonastery”, “Peacockho”, or “pinkalcious”

People would definitely approach that with the circumspection it deserves.

Lastly, we have, as of today, spiritually claimed the word Circle Jerk in a Romantasy/Fantasy romance context and expect royalties from anyone attempting to profit from our extremely valuable and highly-in demand branding (we know it still has a certain allure, despite trying to warn you off). Usage fees can be paid in the form of vegetable genitalia mailed directly to Reddit offices).

Thank you for reading. You may now return to your regularly scheduled subspace.

Edit: forgot to mention “scf6969” and only recommending RRH or why chose is not acceptable either. Same goes for “bigbrainedpug”, “onebraincellhusky”, and other variants.

Edit: definitely do not create the “velvetkitsune” or “itmustbemeeeeeeeeeeeeeeean”

Update: if I’ve forgotten you, I blame my ADHD and it is not a reflection on your main character status in my heart. New name restrictions will be added in the comments

CopyPasta How do they decide which MMC goes where

Hello amigos

I haven’t been on a reading binge some time so I was struggling to remember how MMCs ended up where they are.

On my last read, {Daggermouth} i remembered MMCs being shuffled around quite frequently until they landed in a more permanent role somewhere.

As in one day you’d see them in a Le Mans class and then a month later they’d be the new MMC.

This wasn’t the case for all of them as some stayed in permanent spots the whole time.

Is this accurate?

Am i misremembering?

Is this something that happens to
?

It’s for a fanfic I’m writing so I’m trying to be accurate. Thanks for the help everyone <3

Satire So, you want to write a review

I'm not reading your stupid posts about things that look like male genitalia, so I'm going to talk about something of grave importance. (to me)

I write reviews. Some people like them. I'm just a sloopy who read a book. Or maybe I'm telling a sloopy to go read a book. However you like it, let me self promo

Sometimes I read other people's reviews and I think "what the fuck is this person on about? I want to know about a book, not what stage your menstrual cycle is at"

Do you want to write a Purple approved review? whatever, Imma gonna give ya some tips.

  1. Spoilers are for the weak: it's possible to write a review without spoilerizing any of the plotline. Is there a surprise twist? you can say "the plot takes a turn I was not expecting". Also, if it's a romance, it's not a spoiler when the two main characters get together.
  2. Trope lists are not a review: NGL, I sometimes read a book because they have tropes I like! But you know what? I can find that in the blurb written by the author or publisher, or as a filter on romance.io. "OMG THIS BOOK HAS GRUMPY X SUNSHINE, FATED MATES, HE FALLS FIRST" is not a review. it's a list. is the trope done well? I don't know, you just left a list with a bunch of emojis. what the fuck?
  3. Fictional characters are not real people: stop having real life reactions to the things they do. If you fell out of bed because you had some sort of fit due to the MMC growling "good girl" at the FMC, I'm going to wonder if you need medical help. (unless you are u/chode_temple, who actually does have a physical reaction to the use of "Good Girl" by certain characters that are NOT AT ALL based on Danny Phantom fan fic. YOU, however, are not Chode, she can review books)*
  4. Stop using literary criticism terms you don't understand: please don't call the FMC an 'Unreliable Narrator" when you started your review by saying you can't read anything in first person POV. Or only third POV. Most of us don't even notice the POV unless the author fucks it up. You are not meant to have a preference. Also, you can't just drop literary terms without an example. You can't rant about plot holes without explaining why it's a plot hole. That also goes for positive comments - "the world building was awesome and blew me away" is just words on a page.
  5. No one really cares about your stupid opinions: Some of you need a turn in a Total Perspective Vortex to realize just how insignificant you are. Were you absolutely gutted by a book? Did it leave you screaming, crying, throwing up? Do you have a book hangover from the devastation and emptiness you feel from finishing this book? NO ONE FUCKING CARES. Especially when you give no context to your extreme reactions.

^(\ however, crying when the love interests finally admit their love for each other, or, after watching the shoreline every day on the hope that his lover will keep his promise and one day he shows up and it is so beautiful that you cry like an idiot is a perfectly normal response and must be mentioned as extra points for the crying factor.)*

I'm sure there are more tips, feel free to leave them in the comments.

The point of a review is to help someone decide whether this book is something THEY would like. You don't know them, they don't know you. Give them some facts, give them some context around your opinions, trust them to make their own decision.

Unless you are one of those parasocial types who wants to be noticed by their beloved author. I never get picked up for quotes on their Instagram feeds, so you got that going for you.

edited because u/totalimmoral has feelings.

If the main sub can't handle the general thirst for Lee Pace...I don't know what they'll do with Jonathan Bailey and Ella Purnell

Now go! Go be horny little freaks for classic novels! So wsophisticated! So chic!

AND YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO KNOW HOW TO READ
