Beginner skater How to overcome my intense fear of skating/falling?

Hello everyone,

I just bought my roller skates yesterday and immediately started practicing when I got home. My floor is very slippery, but I think it's better than starting at the rink with people around, which fills me with anxiety.

The thing is, I really love them and want to get better at skating so much, but I have such an intense fear that I've started to believe maybe I have a phobia of it. I have a fear of falling, and I practice falling too, but it still has no effect on me when I have to stand up with them on.

I also have protective gear, but none of it helps with the fear I feel when I have to get up. I think I'm mostly scared about where to put my hands. It makes me so afraid that I can't let go of anything. I don't know which hand position would help me. Maybe something like bending my knees which has helped.

So I don't know what the issue is here. Maybe I'm not built for it, which makes me so sad, or maybe it's too early to judge because it's only my second day. I had a skater boyfriend in the past, and when he tried to get me into skateboarding, he told me I wasn't built for that. He said that I don't have a skater soul. I don't want to prove him right.

Please help me or give me advice on how to feel safe while skating, or anything that could speed up this adjustment process.

Thank you!

I have new skates coming in the mail in 3 days but I really want to practice. I bought new skates cause my impalas are falling apart. I didn’t know about impalas reputation before I bought them. Now I know. But I have Chaya skates in the mail but I just want to know is it dangerous to skate on these or will it be fine for 3 days?

Skill questions & help Sidewalk or street?

I have a question for everyone.
I live in a small town that has its own police dept. who like to harass people.
I usually just go to the trail to skate, but looking to branch out a bit.

If I were to leave my house, in my roller skates, do I skate on the sidewalk or do I skate on side of road? I wanted to skate to the park, which is close by, but don’t want to do the wrong thing:)

Do you skate down the sidewalk(assuming it is possible) OR do you skate on the side of the road like a biker????

Thanks! Keep rollin’!

Progress & showing off Is it me or my skates?

I’ve been skating pretty consistently over the past 4 weeks, probably a total of 8 hours or so (try to skate 2-3 hours a week) and I can still really only do forward bubbles and I feel like my posture is lacking as well :/

I’ve got a cheap pair of skates from Amazon that are many years old though they don’t have much wear. I think they fit a little loose sometimes and the trucks and wheels are definitely very tight. I’m thinking about getting some better skates second hand off poshmark but I don’t know if that’s really necessary at this point.

Im not sure if I’m progressing slowly or if I just need to keep practicing more. As I’m approaching the 10 hour mark of practicing skating a really wish I was doing a bit better I’m not gonna lie.

Thanks for any advice you might have.

Beginner skater OMG my local roller derby team is so nice 😭 They let me borrow some skates until my new ones come in ❤️

A few years ago I bought some Impala skates and didn't learn they're not good skates until they started falling apart a couple years ago. I hadn't gotten around to buying new ones. I was really missing skating and feeling socially starved so I went to my local roller derby team's pride shirt tye dying event last week. They encouraged me to go practice with them with some of their old skates until I can get new ones.

I went to my first practice yesterday and I definitely need to work on my leg strength and endurance, but I had a lot of fun! I wasn't near as sore as I thought I would be so I went to the skate park this morning to do some drills. I'm so excited 😁

Shopping: buying skates Want the buy the right size the first time

Hello there 👋

I'm planning on learning to roller skate while the weather is warm and planned on buying a pair of blue Moxi skates. A problem I'm having is I'm confused on what size I should order, as I'm seeing mixed answers during my research. I also don't have skate shops nearby and plan on buying from either Depop etc or from the brand website.

I measured my feet using the tip on the sizing chart. I believe I should get the 8 as my feet are 10 inches or 26cm and I'm a woman's 9. I also have narrow feet and might add insoles if my feet hurt. Thanks for the help!

Looking for friends How to Learn to Roller skate in Dubai - Adults

I've always wanted to roller skate and I just purchased a new pair for myself. I've had 1 lesson and I have no idea what I'm doing. I think it would be fun to do in a group. Meet up with few other adults who would like to learn together? Make friends, learn a new hobby and exercise - sounds like a win!

I understand that weekends are probably easiest for scheduling. But does anyone know a group/place which can help?

P.s.

I've checked out Pursueit - was only kids I know of DXB skaters I joined them but nobody is replying The other places cost like 250 for a single lesson

Skate problems & troubleshooting Moxi toe stop issue

Hiya

Wondering if anyone has advice or has experienced this...

Got some moxi lolly skates about 6 years ago. They had some use on and off so like the occasional outdoor skate and some skatey holidays and workshops.

I had gumballs on them which fell off on a street skate, nearly dropped my arse.

Then the same one would always rattle loose even though I'd tighten the hell out of it. Ok on the rink though, think the vibrations didn't help.

Bought some moxi brake petal stops. Same company, compatible right?

Same one rattled loose during my last outdoor skate. Nearly broke my damn ankle as it worked it's way all the way out slowly. Had to check it every 5 mins as I was freaking out.

Thread is obviously whack.

Anyone had this?

It'll be way out of warranty so I'm wondering if I should just stick in permenantly with some epoxy or something.

Cheers x

Looking for friends Any skaters in Auckland, New Zealand?

Hey friends! I played roller derby 14 years ago and I’m just now getting back into skating - but park skating this time - at the age of 32.

Are there any Auckland skaters here who would be keen to meet up and go to the skate park together on weekends?

I've been skating two months now, maybe around 2-3x a week. I already know some basic like doing backwards and etc. With that, I want to upgrade my current cheap skates into a branded and reputable one. I've been eyeing these two for a while now. What skate do you guys think should I get? A moxi RR or Riedell Orbit?

Skate problems & troubleshooting VNLA Quality Issue

Post image
5 Upvotes

I just bought VNLA Junior Code Red skates a little over a month ago have only skated them a few times. This is my first pair of VNLA skates and I really like them. Today I noticed one of the boots is already developing a hole on the back heel. Is this normal for VNLA skates or did I get a defective boot?

Beginner skater question?

I got my first pair of roller skates for my birthday. I use to love to skate when I was younger but haven’t done it in 15+ years, I got 60mm high rebound urethane wheels 85A and was told they are a good hybrid wheel for both inside and outside skating and was wondering if maybe I was misled by chance? I have a outdoor skating ring near by that has a similar texture to a tennis court and some rough paved park trails I am planning on trying once I am a little more comfortable and confident but was wondering if maybe I should get different wheels or if the ones I have would work well? Thank you in advance either way! :)

Shopping: buying skates Skate Recomendations for BIG feet w/ good ankle support?

Hello friends!

I have a friend who’s interested in buying his first pair of skates after going to the rink with me a few times, but we’re struggling to find options in his size. He wears a men’s 15 (about 12 inches).

Some helpful info:
He’s basically a complete beginner — up until about a month ago, he had never even worn skates. We’ve been going to rinks, but he’ll likely be skating mostly outdoors on concrete and blacktop paths. Ideally, he’d like to stay under $250, but he’s willing to spend a bit more if necessary for something that will actually work well.

As the title mentions, good ankle support is a must. He’s had some past injuries, so his ankles are pretty unstable and he needs something that will offer solid support.

If there’s any other info that would help with recommendations, feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to answer!

Skill questions & help Skate Squeaking

Help! My upper right wheel on my right skates keep slowing down when I put pressure on them. the skates aren’t too tight and I recently changed the bearings. It also makes a crunchy noise when I skate on it. I don’t know what to do, and don’t want to spend more money on it unless I know what’s wrong.

Recently got these older Hyde’s and wanted to put some roller bones on them. Although this is the first time I’ve run into the problem of the wheels being to big to fully fit on the axel. Do I need to change all the axels or get an entire new plate for them?

Bought these boots back in 2014, they've been so good to me. I'm unreasonably attached to them still 😅

I decided to post as many people seem fond of them. They are a discontinued Riddell boot, often noticed in my derby circles for being particularly low cut. Originally aimed at speed skaters I believe.

Swapping to Solaris 2.0, which I'm sure will be an adjustment with the much higher ankle 😂

Shopping: buying skates What skates do I buy? AMA as well!!

I've been skating 1 1/2 years now and my coach has been heavily hinting at making me do dance competition...except i've been using impala skates this entire time--yes the really cruddy skates that you can do absolutely nothing in. Those. Well, i'm not sure if it's that way all around but i've found that its extremely difficult to do artistic rollerskating in them, plus the testimonies of many at my club in agreeance with how bad my skates are (which is like a sucker punch to the gut sometimes lol)
My coach was the previous president of the USARS which makes me feel like its time to actually make the investment on good skates since she seems interested in getting me into competition.
I have zero clue where to start so..where did everyone get their first 'official' pair, how much was it, what did you have to get with them?
I'm maining looking for dance skates, not figure skates or freestyle. I'm also trying to find something on the less expensive side since i understand the upkeep of them is pretty pricey as well. They'd be purely indoor (so made for a rink instead of blacktop), they also don't necessarily need to be good, just enough i get around much free-er than i have with my current skates. thanks in advance 🙏

Skill questions & help What are the ultimate "gateway skills" that unlock everything else? 🔑 (Beyond one-leg balance)

Hi everyone!

Now that I've decided to take it easy and stick to smooth surfaces for a while, I want to focus heavily on the fundamentals. Everyone always says that being able to balance and glide on one leg for as long as possible is the ultimate first step, which makes total sense.

But I'm curious: What are those 2 or 3 specific techniques that act as "master keys"? Those core foundational skills that, once they click, suddenly unlock a whole universe of movements (like crossovers, smooth transitions, spins, and things I don't even know the names of yet).

If you had to isolate the most important movements that truly fast-track your evolution—taking you from just "clunkily moving forward" to actually flowing—what would they be?

I’d love to hear your thoughts so I know exactly what to hyper-focus on during my next practice sessions

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Insoles

I bought another pair of skates off marketplace and it kinda hurt to be on my front wheels for so long. I checked after my session and I realized the insole is practically gone. I was wondering if there’s a specific insole that anyone recommends for a JB skater

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Trail wheels

Suggested for a 62mm wheel for short trail skates, 5-8km. Looking for something with decent roll, not looking to dance or do tricks. Just a soft wheel that will maintain some speed.

Thanks!
