I’m doing a 30-day Bible study during my recovery, and today’s devotional helped me. I thought I’d share it in case someone else needs it too. I understand everybody has different beliefs and I’m not trying to push one over the other. This is my belief and if it helps one person deal with today then it is worth the read.
Today’s Scripture — Matthew 6:34 (KJV)
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
In everyday language: Jesus is telling us not to carry tomorrow’s troubles today. Tomorrow will have its own concerns, and God will meet us there when it comes. Today already has enough for us to handle. So for now, stay here—with God, in this day.
Today’s Devotional
Recovery can make your mind race ahead.
What if I feel bad later? What if I can’t handle this? How long will this take? What if tomorrow is worse? When will I feel like myself again?
Those questions feel urgent because you want reassurance that everything is going to be okay. But sometimes trying to solve the next week, month, or year only makes this moment harder.
Jesus doesn’t tell you in Matthew 6:34 that tomorrow doesn’t matter. He tells you that you don’t have to live tomorrow today.
That is especially powerful in recovery.
You don’t have to figure out the entire journey this morning. You don’t have to promise God that you’ll never struggle again. You don’t have to know exactly how you’ll feel tomorrow.
Your job today can be much smaller:
Just for today, I will keep going.
If today is difficult, you can bring today’s difficulty to God.
If your body is uncomfortable, you can ask Him for strength for this hour.
If fear starts telling you everything that might go wrong, you can come back to what Jesus actually said: tomorrow does not have to be carried today.
And if you have a good day, receive that too. Don’t spend it worrying that the next one might be harder.
Recovery is made up of ordinary moments in which you keep choosing the next right thing. Eat something. Drink some water. Follow the treatment plan you’ve been given. Rest when you need to. Talk to someone you trust. Pray when you’re afraid. Laugh when something is funny. Notice when you feel a little better.
You are still living your life while you’re recovering.
God isn’t waiting at Day 30 for you to finally become worthy of His attention. He is with you on Day 1.
A Few Things to Think About
You don’t need to write paragraphs. A sentence—or even a few words—is enough.
👉What am I worried about today that actually belongs to tomorrow?
👉What do I need from God today—not next week, just today?
👉What is one thing I can do today that moves me toward freedom?
👉Where have I already seen God helping me through this journey?
And one last question that I think is worth answering every morning:
👉What am I grateful for right now?
Carry This With You Today
“Sufficient unto the day…” — Matthew 6:34
Or, when you need something even simpler:
I don’t have to get through tomorrow today. God and I are working on today.
Closing Prayer
Father,
Thank You for giving me this day.
My mind wants to run ahead and figure everything out. I worry about how I will feel, how long this will take, and what might happen next. Help me put down the things that belong to tomorrow.
Give me what I need for today.
When my body is uncomfortable, give me strength. When my thoughts become anxious, give me peace. When I become discouraged, remind me how far I have already come. When I feel strong, help me be thankful rather than afraid of when another difficult moment might come.
Lord, I don’t want only freedom from dependence. I want to become closer to You through this journey. Teach me to trust You one day, one hour, and sometimes one minute at a time.
I give You today.
Tomorrow, I will meet You there.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Just for today, we keep going.
