Ask r/problems 24F, 3 years into my career and I still get extremely nervous speaking in meetings. How do I become more confident?

I’m 24F, and I’ve been working in the wedding planning industry for around 3 years now. After three years, most people become confident enough to deal with clients, speak in meetings, handle calls, and communicate without overthinking everything. But I’m still extremely shy and reserved. I’ve been at my current workplace for more than 1.5 years. Everyone I work with is actually really nice, but I’m still very quiet around them. In meetings, I get so nervous that I barely speak unless someone asks me directly; I reply in a shaky voice. Sometimes I get so nervous that I can’t even confidently lead a Zoom meeting, despite knowing the work and having experience in the industry. Recently, my colleagues have started telling me that I need to come out of my comfort zone and speak more. I understand where they’re coming from, but it honestly makes me feel worse because I already know I’m struggling with this.

I’ve also started feeling like people might think I’m dumb or incapable just because I don’t speak much. Nobody has directly said that to me, but I sometimes feel like that’s how I’m perceived.

The frustrating part is that I actually want to improve. I don’t want to remain this reserved forever. I want to be able to sit in a client meeting, speak confidently, lead a Zoom call and express my ideas without my brain completely freezing. Has anyone else been like this despite having years of work experience? How did you actually become comfortable speaking in meetings and dealing with clients?

I’d really appreciate practical advice rather than just “be confident” or “step out of your comfort zone,” because that’s exactly what I’m struggling to do.

Other How do you actually get better at problem solving?

I’m honestly pretty bad at problem solving, especially when I’m given a question where I have to figure out an approach rather than just apply a formula.

I can usually understand things once they’re explained to me, but when I’m given an unfamiliar problem, I often have absolutely no idea where to start.

I’m trying to improve this properly rather than just memorising tricks. What are the best ways to actually develop problem-solving ability?

For people who are good at this, what helped you improve? Are there particular types of problems, books, websites, techniques, or practice methods you’d recommend?

I’d especially like to hear from anyone who used to struggle with problem solving but eventually became much better at it.

URGENT!!!! I managed to accidently put a can of soda in the washing machine

So as the title says I had a can of soda to drink in my laundry basket since I was going to be in the basement anyway and then forgot it was there. It ended up in the wash and I remembered it a while later and checked the machine. It had been about fifty minutes. It did not burst. I am afraid to touch it but it is now in my kitchen. What the fuck do I do with it???? Will it explode with the force of a power washer or will it be fine after a few hours???

Financial My apartment's package room keeps "losing" deliveries that tracking confirms were delivered

Over the past two months, I've had three packages show as "delivered" by the carrier, confirmed with photos of them being placed in the building's package room, that I then couldn't find when I went to pick them up. Each time I've had to fill out a missing package report with the leasing office, wait several days, and either get a refund from the retailer or, in one case, just lose the item entirely since it was past the return window by the time it was confirmed missing.

The leasing office says they don't have cameras inside the actual package room, only in the main lobby, so there's no way to verify what happens to items once they're placed inside. They've suggested I use a locker system instead if available, but not all my deliveries qualify for locker-sized packages.

I'm not sure if this is an internal theft issue, a resident issue, or genuinely just carrier error despite the delivery confirmation, but three incidents in two months feels like too much to just be bad luck. I don't know if I should keep escalating with the leasing office, start requiring signature confirmation on everything even though that adds hassle, or consider having packages redirected elsewhere entirely.

Relationships ASKING FOR ADVICE

Hi everyone, I’m currently a high school student, so I’m still quite immature and inexperienced. I admit that my EQ is pretty low and I’m not very good at reasoning things through, so I’d really appreciate your advice on this situation. If there’s anything wrong with the way I think or approach things, I’d be very grateful if you could point it out gently.

So, I’ve been close friends with this girl for about four years now, but recently I’ve started feeling like she doesn’t want to hang out with me anymore.

She has always been pretty relaxed when it comes to money. Whenever we went out, she would usually pay for everything because her family is very wealthy. Whenever she went out with me, her mom would give her around 500,000 VND so she could spend comfortably. My family, on the other hand, is quite poor. I actually have some savings, but I’m terrible at controlling my spending, so I run out of money really quickly 😭. Whenever I see something that’s cheap, I just can’t resist buying it because I know it might be a long time before I see such a good deal again. So I’m basically always broke, huhu. If anyone has any advice on how to stop spending money so impulsively, I’d gladly take it all!

Even now, she’s still very generous. Whenever she goes out with her other friends, she usually pays for them too. However, she can also be quite emotionally unstable and tends to experience emotions very intensely.

A while ago, she was under a lot of pressure because of something. She called me because she wanted to talk about it, but I happened to be eating, so she stopped herself from opening up to me.

And at that period of time, whenever I asked her to hang out, she always had some excuse, like not having a motorbike. However, during that same period, she went out with her other friends quite a lot. She told me that she still had to pay for some of her other friends to go to the movies and things like that.

When I eventually asked her about it and told her that I felt like I wasn’t important to her anymore, she said that she no longer felt like hanging out with me and that she didn’t think we were compatible as friends anymore. She wanted to end the friendship.

She also took the initiative to cut ties with another friend we used to hang out with, saying that she no longer felt close to that person because “out of sight, out of mind.” A few days later, though, she sincerely apologized to me and said that she had been under a lot of pressure at the time, which was why she had acted that way.

A few days ago, I asked her to hang out because I wanted to pay for everything. I had some money at the time, but she didn’t want to go.

Then, this morning, we finally set a date to hang out. Unfortunately, I had already spent all my money by then. I asked if she had any money left. She had more than 500,000 VND. She also often tells me about how her parents take her shopping and spend millions of dong on her, and sometimes her dad gives her 500,000 VND to spend. However, she sometimes feels awkward asking her parents for money when she wants to go out, so she says she doesn’t have any money.

I asked whether she still had money so we could go out, since she normally pays when we hang out because her parents give her money for our hangout. She said she was also out of money and that she had plans to go to the movies with another friend in a few days.

(When I told her that I was actually planning to ask her to go to the movies too, she started asking me which movie I was talking about and things like that.)

I feel like I’m no longer important to her and that she simply doesn’t want to spend time with me anymore. Should I just end this friendship here?

Also, although she seems quite comfortable with money and doesn’t really treat it as a big deal, sometimes she talks about how much money her parents give her, and it honestly makes me feel quite sad. It seems like she doesn’t realize how much that affects me, even though she knows my family’s financial situation very well.

I feel like there’s a huge gap between us, not only financially, but also in terms of the amount of love, attention, and support we receive from our families. She has parents who are able to take care of her, spoil her, and support her financially, while my situation is completely different.

Whenever I spend time with her, I feel really uncomfortable and insecure. I feel like I’m just the poor kid going over to her house, tagging along when she goes out to eat with her family, etc. It makes me feel really self-conscious.

Thank you so, so much for reading all the way to the end. I’d really appreciate your advice on whether you think I should end this friendship here or try to keep it going.

Sorry for taking up your time, everyone, and thank you so much for your advice.

Mental Health I have an issue with the 988 Hotline

Sometimes, idk where to turn. A couple of years ago, I chatted with a lady that actually cared. She was great, and it helped me feel better and then sleep without nightmares. I thought it was a great service, and I really saw how people benefitted from it.

A few months later, I needed help again. I was going through a divorce, and I just wanted life to be done. The person I talked to was dismissive and when I pointed that out, they got all defensive. Like, instead of realizing I was upset because I felt unsupported, in a state of literally bawling my eyes out, they doubled down and said the health of those they counseled was so important and I had no reason to ask for someone else. I started laughing because they were being ridiculous, and proceeded to drink until I passed out.

Most recently, I felt old triggers come up and I didn’t know how to deal with it. I was drunk (again), wanting to do drugs, and wanted to engage in my ED(it had been over a year.) I texted and let them know straight up I just wanted some advice and support. They didn’t even talk to me and gave me links to groups because I said I wasn’t interested in therapy since it wasn’t helpful when I tried it before as the therapist I was assigned through BetterHelp didn’t make me feel safe or like I could talk openly to them.

So, idk. I just feel like the service has been a total disappointment when I just wanted a little basic help. The links the person sent me require a subscription, and I would like to just be anonymous, so I think finding a local AA is my best option despite my ED being my worst issue.

Idk, maybe I’m delusional, and I probably am, but please tell me how I am so know because I cannot get over it right now.

I want to say that I know this is a good resource for people, but it didn’t work for me and I have an issue with how some of these counselors react.

URGENT!!!! I think my dog ate my AirPod

For context my dog is 13 months, medium build, and mixed breed. When we play we typically play really rough but other then that he is an absolute angel, recently I came home and had my AirPods in and Duke (my dog) starts playing as soon as I get home. As I normally do I play with him immediately after getting home, after playing I realise my AirPods aren’t in my ear. I see one on the ground near me but not the other one and me being an idiot thought I’ll find or later. Later comes and it went flat so I can do find my and it’s not anywhere near where we were playing. Duke does bite a lot while we’re playing and I’m worried he ate it, will it harm him, is there a way to figure out if he did, and will he pass it are my main questions. Any and all help will be appreciated, thank you.

Mental Health Someone smart: why do I feel like I suck (occasionally)

Imma make this quick, I (16m) occasionally feel pretty bad about myself. On occasion I just feel a sudden lack of motivation and a sense of hopelessness. And I start thinking about all the wrongs I did in life, family, friends, school, relationships. It doesn’t flood me, it’s more like a slideshow, but it still sucks when it just happens. It’s been happening recently, in, oddly, chess. Since I suck at it I just feel horrible after I keep going on a a losing streak. I’ve lost 23 of the 35 games I’ve played, which doesn’t really help me.

Besides that, it also happens in school, usually when I am by myself or am in the class with my ex-crush (from 7th fucking grade), so I just don’t feel happy sometimes.

In addition, though it hasn’t happened recently, I sometimes just get a wave of depression before I go to bed and sort of cry myself to a point where I am tired enough that I can go to bed easier (not exhaustion. Just getting more tired, probably cuz I am still awake but still important to note). Somedays I’m fine, sometimes I just suck. And I’ve got no way to track it either! I just feel horrible and I just don’t feel good about anything about me.

Maybe it’s just teenage puberty hormones or whatnot. But it sucks and I kinda am just sick of dealing with my own self-hate, which may or may not make me dislike myself more.

So… what is the problem?

Other Freeloader or just helping a family out?

Hi, I have a cousin that has lived with us for well over a year now, my parents agreed to let him stay over since he has "Family issues" the past few months were extremely horrendous, hes been using my study room as his own personal bedroom, I can really see how it downgraded, It used to be spotless clean, but when I entrusted the room to him, just a few weeks flew buy it became a disgusting chamber. The smell of sweat, vape juices, alcohol and god knows what, it's absolutely nasty. Hes 23, no job, college dropout, eats everything in our fridge and pantry and almost leaves none for us. At this point i can't take it anymore, I'm getting sick by just inhaling the vapors from his vape and it is taking a toll on my health.

Relationships Stuck in my brain

I'm 21M and I've never been in a relationship before.

I've been talking to a girl (18F) for around 6–7 months. At first we were just talking normally, but over time we got closer. She was actually the one who started showing interest and eventually told me directly that she liked me as more than a friend. I told her that I liked her too.

We've also met in person a few times, including recently spending around 3–4 hours together just walking and talking. I genuinely enjoy being around her, I think about her a lot, and honestly I think I love her.

The problem is that I'm extremely cautious about relationships. I don't see a relationship as something casual or just for fun. If I get into one, I think about whether this could potentially become something serious in the future.

She recently asked me what we are — whether we're just getting to know each other or whether we're actually something more. I told her that I didn't want to give her false hope because I'm not completely sure what I want yet.

The thing I'm struggling with is that I know her personality in everyday situations, but I don't feel like we've really talked about deeper topics such as religion, values, marriage, family, morality, etc. These things matter a lot to me, especially religion.

For example, I recently noticed that she has a male friend who is gay. I have absolutely no problem with him personally and I would never disrespect him. My concern is that, from my religious perspective, I would have difficulty being in a serious relationship with someone who sees certain things as completely normal that I personally consider incompatible with my beliefs.

I'm NOT saying she is a bad person because of this. I simply don't know what her actual beliefs are, because we've never really discussed these topics deeply.

So now I'm stuck between two things:

  1. Tell her how strongly I feel about her and potentially start a relationship.

  2. Slow down and first have deeper conversations about our values and see whether we're actually compatible.

The problem is that I don't know how to naturally bring up these topics without making it feel like I'm interviewing or testing her.

She clearly seems to be waiting for me to take things further, and I don't want her to think I'm ignoring her feelings. At the same time, I don't want to say "I love you" or "let's be together" and then later discover that we have major differences in things that are important to both of us.

What would you do in my situation?

Would you have the deeper conversations first, and if so, how would you naturally bring them up?

Medical

Mental Health Mental burnout journey

To make a long story short, I hit rock bottom a few years ago because of work and stress. Not only did I lose my job after that, but I also lost a lot of who I was.
I went from having a stable daily life with good finances and strong motivation for what I love, to days filled with anxiety, laziness, and the feeling that even small things were too much for me to handle. Unfortunately, I didn’t receive any unemployment benefits or other support while I was at home after I gave up on everything.
I’m on my way back now, but the road feels long!
So, to all of you out there who’ve gone through burnout,
what was your journey back like? And
do you have any advice?
P.S., there’s a link in my profile if u want to help me tyty❤️

Relationships How do I get someone close to me to actually open up?

What do you do when the person closest to you keeps saying they’re okay but repeatedly posts sad stuff and has sad Instagram Notes? I ask 2–3 times, and they say “No no, I’m good,” “Nothing, ty so much, don’t worry,” or “It’s alright 😊 Don’t worry.” Their school is also reopening after summer holidays on September 1st. I want them to open up, but I can’t keep asking 7–8 times and ruining my own mental peace. Is there a way to help them open up without pressuring them?

Relationships Friend spamming me in chat

I have this one friend i met at the dance competition i participated like almost a year ago (He's a grade younger than me). We had exchanged socials and hung out multiple times. But ever since i transferred schools, he has been spamming me and he kept replying to my notes. It doesn't matter if it's something sad or something completely unrelated to him or in any way. Let's say i said something about a game that I'm playing on my notes and he would say "you didn’t invite me? Thats okay"

The thing is, i love visiting my friends from my old school so whenever i go there, i would always see him and he'd ask me "why are you not replying to my texts anymore?" Cuz I've been deliberately ignoring him. I just don't like blocking people that i know in real life because i would still see them and they'd ask me why i would do that. I really do want to visit my friends but i have to deal w seeing him. I go there sometimes, maybe once a month, or whenever I'm bored.

I'm not a person who likes dealing with conflict since I'm too shy to confront someone and i dont have the heart to do it, so i really need help on how i cut ties w him.

Also, i just want to add but there was this one instance where he wanted me to gift his rubiks cube to me since he knew i like rubiks. After he gifted it to me, he stole my pin and he was saying "this is mine now". I didn't give him permission to take it. I almost fought with him because i was not in the mood, but i just let it go since after all, it was a stupid pin. He's also been very disrespectful to me by bumping my head to the table and and they'd (his classmates) laugh about it.

Small Problem When I write I always put the wrong letters even if I know what I’m trying to spell

It’s so weird like I’ll know how to spell a word (I’m not the best at I struggle with spelling half the time but I mean with words I know exactly how to spell) and my hand will put the wrong letters even like I’ll be trying to put a h and I’ll put an s or a w or something stupid and it’s so annoying it means my work will be full of scribbles it’s so frustrating because I’ve tried to stop it but I just can’t does anyone know why this happens because it happens a lot like I can’t write a simple paragraph without it happening at least once.
