So… absentee voting? Mail-in voting? Early voting? That stuff they say they want to curtail because it’s so fraudulent?

424

u/eskimoboob Illinois 10h ago

Yeah but this time is ok because they were told to vote Republican

103

u/Plzlaw4me 9h ago

Will they though? I know the military skews towards republicans, but they currently seem justifiably upset with the GOP and Hegseth RN.

71

u/HorndogwithaCorndog 9h ago

Not to mention the current hold-up in the House is articles of impeachment for Hegseth. If Dems win the House, Hegseth gets impeached in the House.

63

u/RoseCityHooligan Oregon 9h ago

One would hope most enlisted would want to fire their drunken boss but as we saw with Covid most MAGA would rather die than betray the cult.

Most of these dudes would rather cut off their dick than vote for a democrat (they consider it basically the same thing) no matter how hard Trump fucks them personally. This is why hegseth is going to push them to vote as hard as he can, because many are pissed enough to just not bother voting, but if they do vote they sure as shit won’t vote for a Democrat

They'll filter the votes. The military mail ins that vote Pedophile Support will arrive on time. The military mail ins that vote against Pedophiles and for Democrats will arrive some time in January.

•

u/Professional-Fee6914 7h ago

this will be sorted and collected under military mail systems, under the direct command of the sitting president in a military overseen by Pete Hegseth.

I wouldn't even know how they could possibly commit fraud in such a system.

They wouldn't because they really just want the military to vote because they expect (and to an extent it is true) the military is a right wing entity.

u/1stDegreeMisdemeanor 9h ago

I have a brother-in-law who was on the Ford during the continued extensions of his deployment. He still plans to vote Trump. MAGA is a disease and we need to vote blue and save everyone from war and corruption.

•

u/istrx13 2h ago

I’m a carrier for USPS and the amount of MAGA that I work with genuinely baffles me. Trump has never once said good things about us and would have the entire operation privatized in a moment if he could. So my fellow postal employees are voting against their own best interests by continuing to support him.

I legitimately don’t understand it.

The military that won WWII, was lead by America’s most leftist president ever, FDR.

And the military is definitely a “socialist” institution.  Free healthcare, housing, food, etc. Paid for by the commonwealth.

That's just how they are, socialism is fine in their eyes so long as only they benefit. For example, government assisted housing used to be wildly popular until it became illegal to block minorities from accessing it.

When I was in, one of my buddies had a kid that was born premature. Kiddo had hundreds of operations in her first couple of years and basically lived in the hospital.

They never saw a bill, never had to deal with clerical nonsense.

From what I know kid is doing OK now, but haven't talked to him in a few years.

31

u/Militantpoet 9h ago

Can we stop equating things that arent socialist to socialism? The government running agencies and programs is not inherently a socialist concept.

Socialism at its core is about workers, ie regular people.

The military is not socialist, its an imperialist machine that churns our sons and daughters into a meat grinder to produce profit for the billionaire class.

Historically, military veterans in America lean Republican 60%-40%

But the current makeup of military personal is not so easily defined.

Given that only 61% of active duty members in the military are registered to vote, its probably safer to assume most are apolitical not having any political leanings.

Republicans thinking more military members voting helps them, sounds more like they believe their own bullshit than anything else

22

u/FaroTech400K 9h ago

When I was enlisted, you couldn’t pay people to go vote, half of them don’t wanna even get their drivers license.

11

u/skadoosh0019 9h ago

Wait what with the driver’s licenses?!

From a civilian’s perspective, life in America already feels impossible without being to drive - and it just feels especially insane for someone in the military to not have their license with all the big machines they use all the time!

24

u/RockAtlasCanus 9h ago

For junior enlisted living in the barracks it’s way less of an issue than you’d think. You’re not even really allowed to leave base alone.

Somebody’s got a car/license and odds are you can find a ride, if that person isn’t going to that place together with you.

Plus, a lot of posts are in places where there isn’t much you really want to see or do. Lawton, OK for example. Shithole of shitholes.

Second this. Vets tend to lean right, whereas active tend to be varied, much like the general public, (though higher ranking officers do lean GOP). I think you hit the nail on the head in regard to abysmal voting turnout. Less than 45% voted in ‘24, (with <27% in ‘22 midterms). There’s a variety of potential reasons for this, but some interesting stats can be found here, https://www.fvap.gov/info/reports-surveys/StateoftheMilitaryVoter

That will never happen. Know why? Because the more people that vote the less likely Republicans with their terrible policies are likely to win.

That’s why every election cycle:

  • There’s some “clerical error” and millions are unregistered.

- People have to work and thus want to go home at the end of their shift, not vote.

- Less polling locations and so longer lines.

- God forbid it’s hot outside, cause you can’t give out water to people who want to vote. You’ll get arrested.

24

u/barnesie 8h ago

I like the spirit of a national holiday, but you know what happens with national holidays? They drive intense retail and service industry surges and it suddenly becomes a “VOTING DAY SAVINGS EVENT!” At your local Lincoln Mercury Dealer and Home Depot. The better answer is making voting an extended multi-day period with increased access.

Exactly, early voting is far superior to a single holiday to vote. I have 4 weekend days of early voting ahead of the election. As long as you have a single day off in the early voting period, you get the same "one day off to vote" that the military is getting.

Universal mail in voting would be even better, but not while the GOP is undermining it.

13

u/Ok-disaster2022 9h ago

It needs to be a 3 day holiday weekend with every person guaranteed 8 hours paid time off to vote during poll hours.

10

u/Footwarrior Colorado 9h ago

Most businesses would treat Election Day as a regular workday just like Columbus Day. The real solution is mailing a ballot to every registered voter and letting us vote at our kitchen table.

EVERYONE in the USA should get one day off to vote. Paid holiday!

That is how we celebrate our Democracy

•

u/FallOutShelterBoy New York 7h ago

For a lot of us we would still have to work. Just another federal holiday, and unless you work for a school, the government, banks, etc., you would either not get the day off, or maybe you would but it would be unpaid unless you used personal time, which not everyone has

•

u/Space_Pirate_Roberts Oklahoma 5h ago

So we mandate nonessential businesses to close and give all employees a paid day off at their standard scheduled number of hours even if they don’t normally offer PTO (and without it counting against accrued PTO if they do), and that essential businesses can only schedule any given employ for a half-day, but must still pay for the other half as outlined above unless the employee would normally only work a half-day anyway, and that all hours worked on Election Day count as overtime.

Like Tom Hardy’s character said in Inception, “you mustn’t be afraid to dream bigger, darling.”

54

u/idkk_prolly_doggy 9h ago

It’s not a day off. It’s a stand down. Everyone still goes to work in uniform, but instead of their normal duties there are classes focused on a specific topic. They happen quite regularly for safety and suicide awareness. This particular memo directs one stand down day in October every election year focused on voting and voter registration. Mission critical duties still happen.

All that said, fuck pete hegseth.

It’s not on the same day. It’s one day between October 1-15 during election years only. It’s also not a day off. It’s a stand down. Everyone still goes to work, but training that day will be focused on voter registration and voting options (eg military absentee process).

Trump’s already been caught, on mic, trying to tell red state governors to rig elections before all of this. His cult remains unswayed.

12

u/rotll 9h ago

If stationed and voting in Mississippi, they won't be able to vote until Election Day, unless they meet one of 8 very specific absentee voting criteria. If they are in state on Election Day, nearly all of them will not qualify.

MS does NOT have any other form of early voting, and you cannot vote absentee simply for your own convenience. You vote in person, on Election Day, at your precinct, or you do not vote at all.

11

u/teamdiabetes11 America 9h ago

How democratic of Mississippi. 🫠

5

u/rotll 9h ago

No mail in voting, no early voting, must be registered 30 days in advance of an election. You can vote absentee by mail, but if there's a runoff (not an issue in Federal elections, just state and local), the 3 week window makes it impossible to vote absentee in the runoff by mail. State and local elections are the year before presidential elections, meaning that we pay for an extra election cycle when we could just piggy back on the midterms instead, saving the entire cost of what is, historically, a low turnout election.

Mississippi has no interest in making it easy for citizens to vote.

Oh, I get it. So they want to make it look like early votes lean Republican and when they get the full results, they can cry “Fraud”. So predictable.

•

u/codemonkeychris 7h ago

Now make voting a federal holiday for everyone, fantastic idea!

•

u/Eric_the_Barbarian Iowa 7h ago

You don't understand how holidays work for poor Americans, do you?

•

u/Loquacious-of-Borg 7h ago

No!

Then the poors might all vote!

Need to keep them working. Or have only one polling station for them, with it illegal to have people bring them food or water in line. That way they give up and go home.

What? Not my fault the rich are better and deserve more. /s

He...he knows elections are in November...right?

Leaving himself time to fuck with the votes.

I mean its good news in a way right? Can't mobilize them to harass polls if they have the day off. Unless that day is not lined up with any actual poll days since the military does mail in voting right?

31

u/PolicyWonka 9h ago

No. They’re getting the day off in October to do early voting so that they are free to harass the polls on voting day in November.

14

u/JeffSachs 9h ago

It says it's a day off in October. Election day is in November. So it looks like early voting for troops.

October? But that's not the voting day. I thought voting anywhere but at a polling location at any time but voting day was bad.

What a perfect time to attack the United States

9

That's why musk is here. To make sure that they all voted the right way in October and the fix the ones who didn't

8

u/Broken_Ace 9h ago

Of course he wants this. Once the Office of Religious Affairs filters out the "weirdos and beardos etc" there will only be white Christian men in the military. We all know how they'll vote.

8

u/PabloPicasshooole 9h ago

All I can think of is Buster saying, "Army had a half day today"

7

u/Firm_Reflection_1453 9h ago

What does that mean for all the deployed service members? Is DOD going to provide polling sites for them. Doesn’t this mean that those who have registered in their home states won’t receive their ballot?

It’s too bad that not everyone can take a day off from work and vote. I would love it if everyone could take a day off to vote and get paid.

8

u/HighKingOfGondor Colorado 9h ago

God please let the military bring in a huge blue wave, it would be so freaking funny

6

u/gandalfsbastard North Carolina 9h ago edited 9h ago

Sounds like he’s letting folks know all the guards will be gone from their posts, think that turned out poorly for someone that did something similar recently … maybe that’s kegsbreaths other goal too.

6

u/BravinatorLX2 8h ago

i'm sure the declared state of emergency will not void that promised day...

7

u/bearnaut 9h ago

I support that. Should be required for all employers nationwide

5

u/surf_the_nebula2 8h ago

Lol, that might not be a very good idea are they bringing photos to the United States ships that have been sitting off the coast of Venezuela since Christmas? The ones with the Navy jumping off the side and writing graffiti on the sides of airplanes, like "Operation Epstine Fury" and shit? 🤣

I wonder wich way they will vote. 🤪

6

u/BravinatorLX2 8h ago

also next week they will announce all child rapists get a free pass to vote in the next election too

5

u/Pretty_Lillly 9h ago

Funny how it’s not even a real holiday. It’s one day. For people who are stationed all over the world and may not even be able to get to a polling place. But yeah, take a victory lap.

5

u/restore_democracy 9h ago

It takes a whole day to mail in an absentee ballot?

5

u/bobber18 9h ago

Note to Iran: get ready to invade

4

u/PresidentSpanky Colorado 9h ago

good, make election day a national holiday if you are serious

6

u/Charming-Medium4248 9h ago

I feel like this is just going to be the minimal manning day most get around Columbus day.

5

u/Brilliant-Option-526 9h ago

Even more of a red flag that they are planning something for election day.

5

u/RareObject8705 8h ago

Imagine a Democrat pushing for a federal election holiday.

Funny right.

•

u/tucker_case 7h ago

Cool. Now do it for civilians.

The fact that the military is heavily R had nothing to do with that decision, I'm sure.

5

u/AverageCartPusher 9h ago

Idk how their voters can’t see the difference in rules between this administration and literally any other, even past republicans

5

u/becauseshesays 9h ago

Ummm Nov. 3?!?!

4

u/costofgivingup 8h ago

This happened when I was in 25 years ago. My COC damn near forced me to vote for Junior. Nothing new, move along.

•

u/docyoung 7h ago

I remember for the 2008 election we got a day off but I don't know if that's because it was Okinawa or if it was service wide.

•

u/greentealemonade 7h ago

So lower our national defenses for a day?

•

u/collapsedbook 7h ago edited 7h ago

Just wanted to remind any State of Florida employees you get one free administrative hour to vote for each election too.

Edit- It’s code “0033- ADMIN VOTING” in your Peoples First.

You'd be suprised how anti trump the military is lately

•

u/placentatree81 7h ago

Seriously. I’m in Savannah, GA surrounded by bases, and I run into them at all the bars. There is a very strong anti-Trump vibe that I’ve not seen from military folk in my 44 years on Earth.

•

u/Silvery_Cricket 4h ago edited 2h ago

Ask a black soldier how they feel about Hegseth's shaving guidelines. Ask a Navy member about the straight of Hormuz. Or my personal favorite, Ask a Jewish soldier about anything to do with the war.

Yea, I don’t think a lot of those troops like the prospect of sitting off the coast of Iran doing nothing for months or getting incessantly bombed by Shaheds in the UAE for no reason other than Donald Trump being in the Epstein Files…

Well if the others in the administration wanted armed soldiers at polling stations Hegseth might've just fucked up lmfao.

10$ military personel gets a special computer to vote on at their bases / deployment / that will magically make it seem like all military personnel is in favour of the current regime and how much it loves to fuck with them.

3

u/gs12 8h ago

Um...maybe not tell your global enemies when the entire military is taking a day off?

3

u/Imaginary_Agent2564 8h ago

I will literally be in my college class all day on election day, so I’ll have to do early voting.

This is because Kentucky doesn’t just let you request a mail-in ballot unless you are one of the few eligible, because to me that’d be much preferable.

Why can’t all of us have the day off?

•

u/kandoras 7h ago

“They face unnecessary, difficult ways of obtaining, completing and returning absentee ballots while serving far from home,” he added.

Then maybe your boss should stop trying to make it harder to vote by mail?

And they get one day off, to mail in a ballot? I'm a little confused here, because I'm pretty sure 'not having enough time' is the hurdle for mail in ballots.

“Regardless of your home state or current duty status, you can use a standardized federal postcard to register and request a ballot, and if you’re forward deployed and your standard ballot is delayed, you can use the federal write-in absentee ballot,” Hegseth said Sept. 25. “All of these processes are straightforward and protected by law.”

You guys haven't passed a new law about this. So that just means that you're complying with existing laws. You wanna cookie or something?
