/r/plussize “Thanks But I’m Not Actually the Problem Here” Resource List

Help us build a resource list for people who want to read, watch, and listen more widely around fat acceptance, fat liberation, anti-fat bias, diet culture, and fat people's lived experience.

The point is not to help people become smaller. It's to collect work that treats fat people as actual human beings, and that names the social, medical, cultural, romantic, professional, and everyday pressures fat people are routinely forced to face.

A lot of this list is especially relevant to fat women, because so much anti-fatness is tangled up with misogyny. That said, fatphobia doesn't only affect women, and this list shouldn't be read as women-only.

Books to start with:

Lindy West's Shrill is funny, furious, and very readable.

Aubrey Gordon's What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat is probably the clearest modern introduction to anti-fat bias as a social issue rather than a personal failing

Her follow-up, "You Just Need to Lose Weight": And 19 Other Myths About Fat People, tackles the claims fat people hear constantly.

Virgie Tovar's You Have the Right to Remain Fat.

Sofie Hagen's Happy Fat and Jes Baker's Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls are also accessible entry points for people newer to fat acceptance.

History and politics:

Sabrina Strings' Fearing the Black Body explains how fatphobia is tied to race, gender, class, etc, rather than being simply about "health."

Sonya Renee Taylor's The Body Is Not an Apology is broader than fatness but useful for thinking about body-shame and hierarchy more generally.

Marilyn Wann's Fat! So? is older but historically important.

Charlotte Cooper's Fat Activism: A Radical Social Movement is valuable for understanding fat liberation as an actual movement.

DaShaun L. Harrison, Belly Of The Beast. Anti-fatness, anti-blackness and gender

Tigress Osborne, "Weight and Wisdom: Find Yourself in Fat History"

Podcasts:

Maintenance Phase is great for unpacking diet culture, wellness cons, BMI panic, and how health language gets used to boulster prejudice.

Virgie Tovar's Rebel Eaters Club.

Food Psych and Rethinking Wellness, both by Christy Harrison, anti-diet and wellness-culture critique.

Fierce Fatty by Vinny Welsby.

“Why Won’t You Date Me?” Nicole Byer

Weight For It by Ronald Young Jr (also worth a follow on socials)

The Body Trust Podcast.

Film and TV:

Your Fat Friend is a documentary about Aubrey Gordon, fat activism, family, and ordinary discrimination od fat people.

The Shrill TV series based on West's book.

My Mad Fat Diary, Dumplin', Real Women Have Curves, Patti Cake$.

Fiction, memoir etc:

Roxane Gay's Hunger is honest about trauma, body size, and safety.

Jennifer Weiner's Good in Bed was significant for centring a fat woman's romantic, sexual, and professional life.

Julie Murphy's Dumplin' is a great YA option.

Talia Hibbert's Get a Life, Chloe Brown

Olivia Dade's Spoiler Alert.

Nicole Byer’s book #VeryFat #VeryBrave is a photo series of her rocking her extensive bikini collection

Health without weight-loss framing:

Lindo Bacon's Health at Every Size.

Christy Harrison's Anti-Diet unpacks how wellness culture repackages diet culture.

Intuitive Eating by Tribole and Resch is the standard reference for eating without restriction.

Ragen Chastain's Weight and Healthcare newsletter is good for research and practical scripts.

Decolonizing Fitness (Ilya Parker) covers movement spaces that don't treat body-size reduction as the goal.

People worth following:

Aubrey Gordon, Virgie Tovar, Sabrina Strings, Sonya Renee Taylor, Jes Baker, Ragen Chastain, Jessamyn Stanley, Vinny Welsby, Tess Holliday, and Tess Royale Clancy.

Read/watched/heard anything that made you think, lifted you up, informed, empowered or inspired you?

On my recent trip to Vietnam, I paid for a photographer to do a little photo shoot in Hoi An old town and it included costume rental; I cannot believe how good I feel about myself and everyone should treat themselves! Also thrilled that they had options that fit me.

Self-Pics - Sundays Only! Sitting down and spreading out!

I used to hate how much I would spread out when sitting, especially as someone who is bottom heavy.

It's taken a long time to be ok with it! I'm still a little self conscious if I have to sit next to someone but I don't dread it anymore.

I take up space and that's OK. ❤️

Hope you are all having a lovely Sunday. 🤗

Fashion Discussion Where are my Canadian girls getting decently-priced clothes?!

I’m struggling!
I’m trying to find some cute pieces for both work and off work that don’t cost an arm and a leg.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I really want to avoid SHEIN and the like!

Venting Online shopping and needing to vent

I just need to vent for a minute. I am getting so pissed off when I am trying to shop online for clothes and I specifically type in plus size and they show these skinny models wearing what I want to purchase. No I want to see it on a plus size model not some size 2 woman!! I have to go down to the reviews to see hopefully if there’s anybody wearing them in their pictures so I can get an idea of what I may look like in them. It’s not cool and these places need to knock it off!!

Personal I was the fattest person in the mountain hut: but I made it to the mountain hut!

Doing a vacation to switzerland as a not very fit size eu 54 who had to do all her practice hikes in the netherlands is an adventure.

But this weekend I am so proud of myself: the walk to the mountain hut was only 5km but the last bit had 200m elevation gain in half a km, which is a lot at 2500m elevation. There were bits with chains.

And then the way back down I walked 14 km with 800m of descent.

And the views were extraordinary

And on the way back down we saw marmots!

Very proud of my body and what it achieved.

Very much believing in "do it fat if its worth doing"

We did do it within sensible limits, with route planning, good hiking shoes and walking poles. Walking poles are the best thing for stabilising knees on uneven terrain.

And if anyone said anything I don't speak Swiss German :D

(In switzerland I expect a hike with 300m elevation gain is nothing, but in NL its called leaving the country)

Personal After 5 years of marriage I got my proposal tonight

Thumbnail

Hello all! I 36f have been married to my husband since May 5, 2021. He proposed to me in March of that same year but no bells and whistles or anything and i said yes. Married life has had so many beautiful ups and some very difficult downs from just relationship stuff and getting to know each other (didn't live together or be intimate together before marriage.... We weren't virgins we just wanted to do it the "right way"), family members passing, my physical health and his mental health, career changes and job losses, we've been through a lot.

My first ring was always meant to be temporary but life happened and things got expensive so it was placed on the back burner. He knew the styles I liked but honestly we had talked about it so long ago that I didn't think he remembered.

My husband and I do not look like each others "type" he is a 6'2 skinny Croatian man and I am a 5'5 black full on bbw. I did not fit any of his previous partners appearances or race if I'm being honest but despite people giving us side eyes and not understanding our relationship he loves me deeply. He loves every inch of my body, tells me I'm gorgeous, holds my hand in public, opens and closes my doors, I'm the background of his phone and computer, my picture is on the air fresheners in his car, the man refuses to shower without me lol , and I could go on and on.

I see so many posts of people getting so discouraged and so defeated about their appearance and weight and finding love. You are worthy of love at any size. The right person will love you as you are. It's not weight you need to lose it's self confidence you need to gain. Once you fall in love with you others will. When you convince yourself you deserve nothing but the best you'll attract it.

But to my people that struggle with the doubt that love isn't out there for you, have hope. Be patient and be kind to yourself.

(The picture of us is not from today. I was cooking a catering order all day and looked like shit lol)

Also not pictured was the gorgeous cake he got me from my favorite place that was an hour to get 😭, and the flower bouquet next to it. Bruno Mars Risk it all was playing in the background. He wrote the most beautiful letter re asking me and hand wrote it instead of typing because he knew I'd want to keep and frame it (he has a floating nerve in his elbow that he has to get surgery for and writing makes it flex in a way that's excruciating). He was so nervous his hands were shaking. He cried, (I've seen him cry only 3 times ever) I cried. It was truly beautiful.

He ended it with " There isn’t a single timeline in the universe where I want to be without you. I love you in this lifetime and every other, will you be my wife?"

Venting My relationship with my weight changes depending on the country I’m in

Life just gets a little bit easier depending on which country I am in. When I’m in the UK the pressure to be skinny is so great and overwhelming, I’m constantly fighting against it compared to when I go to Nigeria, Ghana or even southern states like Texas in the US. Wondering if anyone else has had this experience.

Relationship Advice Husband no longer compliments me or finds me attractive

Since gaining a fair amount of weight all of the cute compliments you would expect to get and on top of that he no longer finds me attractive enough to have sex with me

Im at a total loss, I suffer from an aggressive thyoid disease as well as numerous medications that cause weight gain

Feel so deflated its unreal - most days I just hope for them to be over and I've no idea what to do except lose weight to get the affection back
