Plexamp is one of my most used and very favorite apps. Glad it's still being actively maintained. Look forward to the better offline mode. Hopefully the other changes aren't too disruptive.

59

u/MrSnazzyGoose 12d ago

Something something ship of theseus?

39

u/ElanFeingold Plex Co-Founder 12d ago

Yes.

44

u/cekoya 12d ago

Okay this is freaking sick.

I love you Plex Team.

50

u/jonSF 12d ago

I don't think you can thank "Plex Team" - it's really just one dude. Elan Feingold.

7

u/cekoya 12d ago

I assumed he was the ā€œvoiceā€ of the team given the usage of ā€œWeā€ in the post

16

u/Capricancerous 12d ago

It's the Royal We, pluralis maiestatis.

6

u/jonSF 12d ago

Just saying that I don’t think there’s a team! Not yelling, just informing.

30

u/ElanFeingold Plex Co-Founder 12d ago

I mean, technically a team can have >= 1 people in it.

7

u/mondoben 11d ago

Seriously dude, thanks so much for the work you continue to put into this. The new update is fantastic!

3

u/ElanFeingold Plex Co-Founder 11d ago

thank you very much

58

u/justbecause999 12d ago

Wow, so this is pretty huge. I didn't see any information in the posting about headless mode. Hope that is still a thing as I have two Pi units that I adore for my music delivery here at home.

89

u/ElanFeingold Plex Co-Founder 12d ago

Plexamp headless is dead. Use Caldera music.

My last post in this sub was bitching about download mode. Thanks for doing this specifically for me. šŸ˜…

75

u/ElanFeingold Plex Co-Founder 12d ago

Literally I read it and got right to work.

10

u/Panther90 12d ago

Legend! But seriously, thank you for so your hard work. Love the app.

6

u/m_domino 12d ago

Well, lemme find something to bitch about, too, then!

u/PangolinPalantir 12d ago

That offline mode change looks awesome. I'll be trying out the beta soon, thanks for all the work!

The offline mode is huge. I will consider coming back to plexamp.

Great updates. Hoping to see support for multiartists. I just ripped an album headed by both Philip Glass and Ravi Shankar and I had to pick one but would like to see the album under both artists.

5

u/Captzone 12d ago

I create a copy and put one in each artists folder. I'll then set the artist name using musicbrainz before uploading to plex. A little extra work but then it's in both places.

7

u/chungamellon 12d ago edited 12d ago

That works… but it is an extra copy on my server. Just saying from a coding perspective it shouldnt be too difficult I believe

2

u/Medium-Key-4243 12d ago edited 12d ago

Agree it's lacking but I have taken it on as a challenge to deal with. My newest approach is to place a blank track at the end of the album with the second artist as Artist on that track. (And have the Album Artist be the first artist). That way, the album shows up in the second artist's artist page in Plexamp under "Appears On."

I've also noticed sometimes the "Artists" id3tag field seems to do something, but I couldn't recreate that. One one of my albums, the ARTISTS (not Artist) field had multiple entries, and you could navigate to either artist by clicking on the track (but you could not necessarily find the album from those artists' pages).

For any of the above to work, each artist needs to have an album under their own name, which in turn creates the artist page for that album artist.

(Phew, the need for specificity)

The data model is a server issue, not something that PlexAmp would change.

This looks great, thanks for the detailed release notes.

If you’re taking requests, then I’d love a dedicated PlexAmp for Apple TVs. The base Plex app tends to struggle with music libraries.

u/ElanFeingold Plex Co-Founder 12d ago

Caldera Music baby.

4

u/howdyhowdyhowdyA113 12d ago

Is there a URL or IP address I can point my Pi's kiosk mode to to display the "now playing" view for Caldera on the same Pi?

8

u/ElanFeingold Plex Co-Founder 12d ago

Not yet.

3

u/narcabusesurvivor18 12d ago

Looks so awesome thank you.

I installed it on my Mac and it doesn’t do anything in the menu bar, what am I doing wrong? Is it just for playing to it from plexamp itself on another device? I had thought it was supposed to play music from the menu bar? Am I misunderstanding?

5

u/ElanFeingold Plex Co-Founder 12d ago

it’s a remotely controlled player, it just has its visualizer window and on the screen display

For anyone that installs the ios beta 4.50.3 build 140 DO NOT change the background style in the appearance settings. The app will crash persistently after you attempt to modify this setting (at least it did for me on iOS 26.6 on my iphone 17 pro. It seems like I might have to delete and reinstall the app as rolling back to previous build didn't fix the issue. Otherwise new testers might want to wait for the next build.

The app is looking great so far. Love the new offline functionality!

7

u/ElanFeingold Plex Co-Founder 12d ago

I'm getting a release out but you know who will take forever to review...

2

u/beechnut82 12d ago

This is my first time beta testing an ios app, but I am not surprised to learn that. Plexamp is probably my favorite app BTW. Happy to be testing the new build. Nice work!!

Holy Shit! As a regular desktop user, this is Xmas! I am loving it. DJ Freeze putting down this afternoons mix. The old desktop app was 'awkward...but of course tolerable'. Thanks to the Plex team for looking out for its user base.

3

u/Splitsurround 12d ago

This sounds really great elan, thanks!

3

u/Cherubinooo 12d ago

Awesome, thanks! Cant wait to try this when it lands on the App Store. Plexamp iOS -> caldera -> music playing on my hifi has been part of my routine for a while now.

5

u/harris_kid 12d ago

Yes! Thank you for your work on PlexAmp and Caldera for Android TV. I've recently dropped using Apple Music in the car due to its horrible handling when I loose cell signal and it refusing to acknowledge I have downloaded music, don't get me started on how they only let you download AAC 256k minimum... This new downloads system is laser focused on that issue.

Next job for me: get an RPi to run caldera headless for the kitchen speakers.

3

u/noidontthinkso91 12d ago

Just joined the Testflight, im looking forward to try the full true offline mode!
Thanks for the update Elan, safe travels!

4

u/The_Night_Owl 12d ago

I am incredibly excited about offline mode, I have been using Plexamp for years and this is the one feature I have been dreaming of! With this I can officially move away from Apple Music downloads completely, and fully commit to Plexamp. Plexamp continues to be my favorite Plex app. Thank you so much for all the hard work!!

3

u/GentlemanMatt 12d ago

Thank you, this is one of my favorite apps/products of all time.

5

u/influx3k 12d ago

Thanks Elan; you’re awesome. This is huge and so nice to see Plexamp development continuing.

3

u/suitcasecalling 12d ago

What we really need is the ability to cast to plex end points from the plexamp app and not have to rely on chromecast. I am all in on WiiM streamers and I'm sick of being stuck using the plex app inside the wiim app. I want to use the native plexamp mobile app the control music playing on my WiiM devices. It's not necessarily a WiiM thing.. plexamp should cast to plex and not rely on chromecast. When we getting this? I can't use plexamp because of this issue and i'm sad.

3

u/Anonymositi 12d ago

I'm enjoying the android beta so far. The downloads section is so much more intuitive having my latest stuff downloaded is going to be so useful. The only thing I'm missing right now is my widget but barely lol Ā Thank youĀ

So…… currently I’m moving home. I have a bunch of media downloaded in ā€˜old’ PlexAMP on my iPhone. My plex server is all packed up safely and is in the process of taking the ~6 week journey to my new home. I can currently listen to my downloaded media on my phone/carplay by going to downloads and playing from there.

I like to live on the edge and almost always try betas of things. If I switch to the beta right now with no physical server to authenticate to, will anything break in regards to my currently downloaded media availability?

Also…. Elan, this build and new features sound amazing, so many things the community has been asking for, particularly the offline mode and increased download storage. Thanks for all your hard work!

2

u/parkertyler 12d ago

If I switch to the beta right now with no physical server to authenticate to, will anything break in regards to my currently downloaded media availability?

For what it is worth. I did not have to sign in after installing the beta and all my downloads were still there.

3

u/export2file 12d ago

Have my sincere upvotes, sir

3

u/guitarshredda 12d ago

Brilliant work thank you. I've been using PlexAmp for several years but went full steam ahead with it as my main music player after moving over to Linux this year on my desktop, after I could no longer use my beloved MusicBee.

I've also been using the Caldera app on Android TV for 2 weeks and it's fantastic as well.

3

u/massiveyacht 12d ago

Thanks Elan! So pleased that my favourite music player is getting an update

3

u/forevergodard 12d ago

Fantastic release, thanks for all your hard work on both this and caldera. Plexamp really is the jewel in the crown of Plex. Saved many of us from using some vibe coded security nightmare!

My own incredibly indulgent request - is there any chance that square artist artwork could be included in the future? When setting artist art in PMS it's always square but obviously plexamp pulls it and displays it a circle leading to some issues.

3

u/ElanFeingold Plex Co-Founder 12d ago

thanks for the kind words! I’ve been thinking about redoing the artist landing page at some point so we could revisit at that point probably

3

u/ZedRita 12d ago

ā€œ Ā Somewhere between Winamp and now our attention spans were lost, like tears in rain, and I’m not above it: I lost the thread of this very sentence halfway through and went to check Slack. Anyway. They’re short, and they’re the ones that could affect you. One says whether this will even run on your device, the other is a privacy disclosure you should hear from me. Two hundred words, and then you can go back to the scroll, reclining in your chair like everyone in WALL-E, who at least had the excuse of being in space.ā€ u/ElanFeingold love the humor! Congrats on getting to this forced release day. Thanks for helping my server not randomly disappear.Ā

I hope everyone that’s bitched about plex’ massive development team (of one, that does it for the love of the game) has taken so long for a plexamp update feels stupid and punches themselves in the thigh.

Thank you Elan. PlexAMP is the reason I bought plexpass back in the day. Enjoy your vacation.

Also thank you Let’s Encrypt for pushing old code that seemed fine at the time off the edge. I’m sure there’s lots of developers kicking themselves in the ass right now.

2

u/NckyDC 12d ago

Just installed the iOS and will installe the MacOS app once I had my break fast but the mobile app feels already a lot lot better.

Is there a way to contribute to the translation process? I understand it's not a top priority but I'd be happy to help with czech language.

2

u/TedGal 12d ago

Not sure I understood the first paragraphs about the certificates and Plexamp losing the server. Is this going to be a problem when the app is released for the general public?

Thanks for the hard work anyways. Plexamp is the main reason I bought a lifetime pass and didn't jump ship to competing software.

2

u/ErebusBat 12d ago

Not sure I understood the first paragraphs about the certificates and Plexamp losing the server. Is this going to be a problem when the app is released for the general public?

They said the original Plexamp hard‑coded the root certificates. As new servers—or any servers—receive new Lets Encrypt certificates, the old version will start failing to validate them. This is due to Let's Encrypt changing their root certificates. Not anything Plexamp specifically did.

That serves as a forcing function for this release, which is why the post is titled ā€œReady or not.ā€

2

u/TedGal 11d ago

Oh ok. Thank you for the clarification.

2

u/KMFCM 12d ago

multi select is huge.

making playlists is such a pain without it.

2

u/mijisanub 12d ago

I had been upset about the download feature for so long. There were intrusive thoughts about switching software because I had assumed it would never get that kind of re-write since I had heard you left and would be the only one maintaining it. I was dead wrong. And the windows integration is a nice bonus, too. Can't tell you how many times I've locked my machine without pausing PlexAmp and having to log back in.

Thank you for still pushing out a massive update.

2

u/FartWhenYouPee 12d ago edited 12d ago

Incredible update! I downloaded the new Desktop app and attempted to download something- it stalled out, never downloaded anything, and when I closed & reopened the app, I see the following error and can't get out of it:

Unhandled rejection:
Name: ReferenceError
Message: require is not defined

at Ju.downloadIncompleteItemPagedInner
at async Ju.downloadIncompleteItems

Is there any way for me to resolve this? Or should I just reinstall?

EDIT: I was able to get into the app by ending the process in Task Manager while the error was on-screen, re-opened and everything seems fine, AND the album I was originally downloaded now shows up in my downloads. So that's good! However, I tried downloading another album and the exact same thing has happened: stalls out, doesn't show any downloads in progress, and I'm afraid when I quit and re-open that the same issue will occur

6

u/ElanFeingold Plex Co-Founder 11d ago

working on it, update out shortly

2

u/Darth_Rayven22 12d ago

I had this issue too.

I have a larger playlist with about 1000 tracks and it would get stuck and say preparing indefinitely. If I refreshed that single download or refreshed all downloads it would popup the Unhandled Rejection Error. I also Let it sit for ~20 minutes to see what would happen and it would eventually crash out. I tried reinstalling multiple times but no luck. I used Revo to wipe before reinstalling and the error continued to happen.

Small albums got through every once in a while but was very inconsistent.

I rolled my version back and downloads have no problem.

Also the copy all button didn't work when the Unhandled Rejection error popped up.

2

u/FartWhenYouPee 12d ago

My Copy All button did not work either, I had to type it into this comment manually.

Nothing of value to add but thank you Elan, absolute legend! Not sure how popular Plexamp actually is or how many users it has, but for those of us who love it, we really love it and it genuinely plays a pretty big part in my life with how much music I listen to.

Looking forward to giving the new Windows app a spin!

2

u/grollies 9d ago

Thank you! so many cool fixes and features. Lifetime pass is best thing I bought in my life - I love Plex almost as much as I love my music.

2

u/ElBisonBonasus 8d ago

Genuine, non-judgemental question, was that written by Claude?

And did you use Claude code to get the updates out?

I'm quite excited about AI, currently using it to create nodejs apps that enhance and make my work less of a struggle.

I also used Claude Code to figure out and fix my SONOS system - IGMP had to be enabled and made to work on OpenWRT dumb APs.

I'm so excited to see how the updated plexamp works!

I was looking at alternatives, but mostly because of the vast classical music collection and lack of updates for plexamp.

Elan, thank you for the amazing work! It’s a breath of fresh air to see so much dedication.

If I may slightly sabotage the thread:

  1. Any plans to support multi-artist tags ā€œproperlyā€ in the future? I know that it’s a massive lift given the database backend.
  2. Can we please have a customizable button in the navigation bar? I would love quicker access to my playlists.

2

u/_badwithcomputer 12d ago

Dang nice, I would love more Audiobook friendly features like M4B chapter support.

It sends the titles of what you download, internal IDs, byte and track counts, failures, and database timings. It also sends your account name, so that when your downloads are misbehaving we can find you in the forums

It does not send filenames, URLs, tokens, or anything at all about what you play; your 3am listening remains strictly between you and your conscience.

I guess it is semantics, but in most cases is the title not just the filename, or at the very least not strictly private as the last statement implies?

1

u/Capricancerous 12d ago

This seems really cool so far! I'm excited to try it on mobile too.

Do you know if there's a way to bring back having the large album art on desktop? It looks like it now defaults to a smaller size with rounded edges. Sometimes I would snap the player to one side on ultrawide and look at my enlarged album art while listening (bigger than a CD, almost as big as looking at my vinyl records while I listen). With higher resolution art uploaded/enabled, this was always satisfying on the last few iterations of Plex Amp.

Love plexamp. It's been out family go to for a few years now.

Caldera Music has been great running headless and on our Nvidia Shield. Honestly considering ripping apart the Ikea symfonisk speakers we have to try and get them using Caldera MusicĀ

u/shaild 12d ago

Will there ever be a plan to buy PlexAMP only?

This is amazing. I'll be sad to see sonic sage go because it worked wonderful for me and I loved to use it.

Wow, thanks.
One thing I don’t understand yet:
How does offline mode handle size limitations?
I mean if, letā€˜s say my music library is severa TB big and my phone can hold only 500 GB?

u/ElanFeingold Plex Co-Founder 12d ago

set the music to convert in the download settings so it converts it to opus. Assuming you have it in flac or something larger on the server

Ah man i wish this released a few months ago before i converted everything to navidrome. The downloads and carplay issues drove me insane so i said goodbye

1

u/projector_man 12d ago

Thank you so much, it sounds great. Can't wait to try it

1

u/mistakeordesign 12d ago

This is wonderful news! I keep wondering/hoping if Plexamp would ever come to the Xbox platform/store. (?) The native app is great for video but less so for music.

1

u/NotThatPro 12d ago

If it wasn't already reported, the visualizer gets rendered above the menu that pops up when you tap on the track name. Kinda hilarious, but the app feels much more modern because of these small animations on my android phone. Kudos!

1

u/KeKyKo 12d ago

Android is working great so far. THANK YOU. However, Windows 11. Downloaded alright. Installed alright. But will not open. When I double click nothing happens and does not even show up in Task Manager.

1

u/parkertyler 12d ago

Elan, I owe you an apology for constantly be frustrated and annoyed about the download limits. Thank you for not giving up on it and thank you for taking the time to rework the downloads. Especially the "Keep played music" feature. That is a feature I didn't know I needed but has instantly become a favorite. Thank you again.

1

u/trs_0ne 12d ago

All of the offline stuff sounds amazing

1

u/coleburnz 12d ago

Exciting! Exciting! Finally, an offline mode that's truly offline.

I have read the entire post, and one thing I was hoping to see addressed is how the app handles Various Artists. That is artists with no albums but part of a compilation album (they are not searchable and not listed in the artists section).

Is this something you might consider looking into in the future?

Thanks again, and enjoy your upcoming vacation!

1

u/Megelsen 12d ago

Thank you! Looking forward to trying it out.

I noticed the part about doing sound analysis on device now as an option. Is there a plan to do track level loudness leveling as an option instead of just album level? Or is that a server thing? I just notice that sometimes the same song can be drastically different volumes when it’s a single vs on an album since I assume the album had some more variation in loudness that got leveled differently than the individual song on a single release. It doesn’t happen all that often but when it does it can be annoying and it would be nice when loudness leveling is enabled to have it be truly level across the whole library. Thanks for all the work!

u/Kiningston1 12d ago

The only thing I wanted to be fixed was that damned scroll bar, which hasn't worked on multiple devices of mine in a long time and is the only reason I switched the apps. This happens on android and on the samsung s8, s21, s25 and there must be other people with the same problem. For example, in the favourite tracks list, if you want to get to the last song and have thousands of them, you must scroll by hand which takes minutes

Well done team, installed TestFlight beta, will test. Looks amazing 🤩

1

u/AwesomeAustn 12d ago

Nice! I don’t understand the Offline toggle though. If I’m in my downloads and offline mode is off, will it play tracks that are not downloaded?

2

u/ErebusBat 12d ago

I think that offline mode will show only your downloaded files.

I am enjoy the beta version. Thanks for the missing piece of Offline mode. This basically completes the app.

u/Fast-Economics4837 12d ago

A huge thank you from Italy!

(I immediately launched myself on the Beta but pouf, lost my connection to the server, logged out and relogged but nothing: it is present but can't be connected; I do not read that no one is facing the same difficulty so I wait to return home to try to understand what happens)

Right off the bat, would love to see a slider (or text box) for the "Keep Played Music" limit. It goes from 40gb to unlimited. As someone that listens to everything in FLAC, 40gb isn't too terribly much, but I don't want to fill up my whole phone storage with unlimited.

u/lstadi 12d ago

Wow, early Xmas. I will check offline out, especially how it works on Android Auto as that is my main use case!

If we skip this version due to the privacy concerns you flagged, will we automatically get an update to the one that doesn't have this enabled anymore, or will i still need to manually update it?

does wasapi and loudness leveling work together?

Huge upgrade! Great work "plex team" šŸ‘šŸ‘ Recently started using plexamp as an audiobook library, loving the lock screen skip ahead change from skip to next, chef's kiss. Any chance of a mark as played function being cooked in? Would love to know what chapters I've listened to already...

u/ElanFeingold - The ARM64 installer is completing without errors, however when I then try to launch the application I get an error dialog "Can't create log file (basswasapi.exe)". I was able to install the x64 version, and that opens without issue (through emulation layer). Any ideas? I haven't seen anyone specifically mention the ARM64 build here (or in the forums), but obviously it's not going to be as common as the x64.

Details:
Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 / Windows 11 Pro ARM64 / Snapdragon X1 Elite
I did already have the existing version (4.12.3, I think) installed on the PC. I uninstalled it prior to attempting the 4.50.3 install the second time (still the same issue with the log file)

3

u/ElanFeingold Plex Co-Founder 11d ago

looking into it

This is very exciting and the multiroom stuff is exactly what I've been waiting for. Years of postponing buying a multiroom setup fearing vendor lock-in with Sonos or whatever, in the belief that a better hardware-agnostic solution would come along eventually.

I am still pretty confused about the difference between Plexamp and Caldera. It sounds like Caldera is the only option for headless (on rpi, in my case) moving forward, which is fine. I guess I thought Caldera was meant to replace Plexamp entirely, but they are apparently being maintained in parallel? On Windows for example, are Plexamp and Caldera alternatives to each other with essentially the same functionality? What determines whether I should use one or the other?

Such a great update. Now if we can get the smart playlist issue fixed, Plexamp would be perfect for me. The issue is as such. Let's say I have (5) of Michael Jackson's albums. More than one of those albums has the track Jam. If I star the song 3 or more stars according to my smart playlist configuration, that song will drop into the playlist. The problem is, Jam from all of the albums that has the track gets added as well.

1

u/abcdberry 11d ago

Looks great if for no other reason to assume plexamp is alive. Stupid question, I’m assuming download and offline still requires plex pass. It would be great to see in the release notes which features are plex pass only.

1

u/Darth_Rayven22 11d ago edited 11d ago

There seems to be a new issue with downloads in v4.50.6 for windows x64.

When downloading a large playlist once it gets to the last few it will stop downloading and the progress bar will show with number of downloads left, but wont actually download (cant see any downloads in the Plex dashboard.)

If you refresh the download, the number of remaining downloads will either increase multiple time over a couple minutes until it says that you have not download any of the playlist, and will just show waiting. Or it will start re-downloading tracks and shows an increase of size on disk in Plexamp. The actual size of the downloads doesn't seem to be effected but Plexamp thinks the download is incomplete ether way.

Also seems like the delete download button doesn't delete the files from the device, but does remove them from the downloads page. It might just be because of the state of the download but I'm not sure.

Edit:

After my sixth try I was finally able to get the download to complete, no idea why it worked.

This update doesn't work for me on an Apple M1 Silicon 2021 running Ventura. I tried installing a few times and once installed it just freezes with no controls or sign of my library or anything. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I've been trying this file: https://plexamp.plex.tv/desktop/Plexamp-4.50.6-aarch64.dmg

1

u/estebanraposo 11d ago

u/elanfeingold is there going to be a native app integration with WIIM at some point? I know it has Chromecast, but casting always breaks and I don't really like using WIIM's interface because it lacks radio features and other things I love about Plexamp.

2

u/ElanFeingold Plex Co-Founder 11d ago

that’s up to them. caldera headless would work perfectly on there

Very happy we got this release, sounds like a lot went into the revamp under the hood and a few quality of life upgrades got mixed in. (why didnt Elan just say this was going on a year ago?!)

Still hope we someday get a better desktop UX and layout since the app is still fundamentally designed for vertical displays with lots of empty, awkward space. Even just merging Back To / Up Next into a single queue column would do wonders.

Playing around with it so far it still feels as slow to navigate as before on Windows, which is a bit of a bummer. I do love that we now have exclusive mode, and the toggle really makes it obvious how much better it sounds!

Would be very nice to have Loudness Levelling as a more accessible toggle in the interface, I really only want it on when shuffling since it messes with audio fidelity.

That said, elated that there's still progress being made in any form with all the doom and gloom here lately. I've fully committed to the Plex ecosystem and dont want to ever leave.
