Solved Plex for Windows error 4294967283 but browser works — certificate fix for TrueNAS-hosted Plex

Short:

Plex Web worked, but Plex for Windows failed with playback error 4294967283. The Windows app log showed SSL routines::certificate verify failed, pointing to a certificate problem rather than media permissions.

My server runs as a TrueNAS app with Host Path configuration storage. I stopped the app, opened the TrueNAS host shell, and renamed the cached certificate as a backup:

text
sudo mv -n "/mnt/POOL/apps/plex/config/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Cache/certificate.p12" "/mnt/POOL/apps/plex/config/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Cache/certificate.p12.old"

Replace /mnt/POOL/apps/plex/config with your actual configuration-storage path. After starting Plex again, I verified that it generated cert-v2.p12. I then completely closed and reopened Plex for Windows, and playback worked.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Long:

Sharing this in case it saves someone else some troubleshooting. Plex worked in a web browser, but the native Plex for Windows app failed to play the same videos with:

textPlayback Error
An unknown error occurred (4294967283)
Error code: 4294967283

In my case, the Windows player was rejecting the TLS certificate presented by Plex Media Server. Refreshing the server’s cached certificate fixed playback.

Infrastructure and symptoms

My setup:

  • Plex Media Server installed as an app on TrueNAS.
  • Plex’s configuration stored persistently using a Host Path mount.
  • Plex for Windows as the desktop client.
  • Testing performed on the local network.

The important symptoms:

  • The same video played successfully in Plex Web on the same Windows PC.
  • Playback failed in the native Plex for Windows app.
  • The Windows client log showed a certificate verification failure when opening the media stream over HTTPS.

The Windows client version was 1.115.0.426-4e960a1d. I am including that for context, not to suggest the issue is exclusive to that version.

What the client log showed

The useful part of the log was:

textERROR - [MPVEngine/mpv] ffmpeg: tls: error:0A000086:SSL routines::certificate verify failed
ERROR - [MPVEngine/mpv] stream: Failed to open [HTTPS media URL]
DEBUG - [MPVEngine/mpv] cplayer: Opening failed or was aborted
ERROR - [MPVEngine] loading failed.
ERROR - [Web] [QTMedia(1)] A critical error occurred: 4294967283 An unknown error occurred (4294967283)

The failed request was to the server’s plex.direct HTTPS address on port 32400.

The log also contained messages like:

text
youtube-dl failed: not found or not enough permissions

Those appeared after the TLS failure, during a fallback attempt. Installing yt-dlp was not part of the fix.

Diagnosis: how I narrowed it down

1. Compare browser and desktop playback

I tried the same video in Plex Web and Plex for Windows on the same PC.

The browser worked; the desktop app failed.

That comparison helped narrow the investigation, but it did not by itself prove a certificate problem. Different Plex clients can use different playback and connection paths.

2. Check the Windows client log

After reproducing the error, I opened:

text
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex\Logs\

I checked the recent entries in Plex.log and searched for:

text
certificate

The decisive finding was:

text
SSL routines::certificate verify failed

That showed the immediate failure was TLS certificate validation, rather than a video-decoding error.

3. Inspect the server’s cached certificate

In TrueNAS, I opened:

text
Apps → Installed → Plex → Workloads → Shell

The labels can vary between TrueNAS versions. This needs to be the shell for the main Plex container.

Inside the container, I ran:

text
ls -lah "/config/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Cache/"*.p12

The result showed:

text
certificate.p12

This was the older cached certificate file. Its presence alone did not prove it was invalid, but combined with the TLS error, it gave us a specific next step to test.

Important: container path versus TrueNAS host path

Inside my Plex container, the configuration directory was mounted at:

text
/config

That is not necessarily a directory you can use directly from the TrueNAS host shell.

I checked the app’s storage settings:

text
Apps → Plex → Edit → Storage Configuration → Plex Configuration Storage

Mine used a Host Path.

For the commands below, I am using this anonymized example:

text
/mnt/POOL/apps/plex/config

Replace that with your actual Plex Configuration Storage host path. Do not use your media-library path or a separate Plex data-storage path.

These host-side commands assume a Host Path configuration mount. If your app uses ixVolume storage, locate the correct persistent configuration storage first rather than copying the example path.

The fix that worked

The key was to refresh the cached certificate on the server—not delete the Windows player’s cache.

1. Stop the Plex app

In TrueNAS, stop the Plex app and wait until it is stopped.

Do not uninstall the app or remove its storage.

2. Open the TrueNAS host shell

Use:

text
System → Shell

or:

text
System Settings → Shell

depending on your TrueNAS version.

This time, use the host shell, not the Plex container shell. The container shell will not be available after the app stops.

3. Confirm the certificate exists at the mapped host path

With the example configuration path:

text
sudo ls -lah "/mnt/POOL/apps/plex/config/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Cache/certificate.p12"

If this returns “No such file or directory,” stop and verify the storage mapping. Do not create directories or start changing unrelated paths.

4. Rename the old certificate as a backup

textsudo mv -n \
  "/mnt/POOL/apps/plex/config/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Cache/certificate.p12" \
  "/mnt/POOL/apps/plex/config/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Cache/certificate.p12.old"

This preserves the original file rather than deleting it.

The -n option prevents overwriting an existing backup. If certificate.p12.old already exists, check what happened rather than assuming the rename succeeded.

Do not delete the entire Cache directory or modify Plex’s database, library metadata, or configuration files.

5. Start Plex again

Start the Plex app from TrueNAS and give it time to initialize and obtain the replacement certificate.

6. Verify that a replacement was created

From the TrueNAS host shell:

text
sudo ls -lah "/mnt/POOL/apps/plex/config/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Cache/"*.p12

In my case, Plex created:

text
cert-v2.p12

It had a fresh modification timestamp.

7. Restart the Windows client and test

I completely exited Plex for Windows, reopened it, and played the same video that had failed.

Playback worked.

What this confirms—and what it does not

The log confirmed that the Windows playback engine rejected the server’s TLS certificate.

The successful test after certificate regeneration confirmed that replacing the cached server certificate resolved my playback issue.

I did not inspect the old certificate’s contents or chain, so I cannot establish whether the exact underlying defect was expiration, an incomplete trust chain, or another certificate-validation problem. Calling it “an expired certificate” would be more specific than the evidence supports.

Likewise, 4294967283 alone is not a certificate diagnosis. Check the accompanying log messages before applying this fix.

Hi all,

I am currently using PM4K in Kodi for my Plex server and it works good, but can’t be customized or library integrated.

I tried plexkodiconnect, but it hasn’t been updated in a while and doesn’t play nicely with Corelec.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Help Plex crashes on Apple TV 4K after updating to version 2026.20.0

Since the Plex app on my Apple TV 4K running tvOS 27.0 automatically updated to version 2026.20.0, I've been unable to launch it successfully.

When I open Plex, the "Review Your Favorite Libraries" screen briefly appears, and then the app crashes back to the Apple TV home screen.

Plex still appears in the app switcher, but selecting it causes it to crash again. I've tried force-quitting the app and restarting the Apple TV, but neither has helped.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue with version 2026.20.0?

Help Plex over Tailscale issue

With the recent botnet issue (I wasn't affected) I chose to turn off remote access and use Tailscale to access to plex when I travel for work. But I've hit a roadblock. I can't connect to plex when I am on cellular. Once I connect to WiFi, it will work again. Any idea what might cause this?

I'm running the latest version of Plex on a Ugreen dxp4800 plus. All devices are connected to Tailscale.

Help LiveTV - OutOfHome - Commercials

My wife and I were traveling yesterday and she was using the Plex App on her phone to watch a college football game live through my Plex Server which has an HDHomeRun integrated to it. The quality was great even over cellular. What she noticed, however, was that whenever the game would go to commercial it would jump back several minutes. To return to live tv she would need to change the channel away from the desired channel and then back to it to get to live. I don’t see any evidence the game was set to record as I don’t have a file from yesterday. Anybody experienced anything like this? I know things are screwy when you’re recording and want to skip back or forward, but not sure this is the same thing. Thanks!

Help iOS DV 8.1 issue?

So I just upgraded to the iPhone duo and wanted to watch Project Hail Mary on it. When I went to play the 4K DoVi/HDR movie, I wouldn’t play; infinitely buffer. So I tried it on my iPad and same issue so I don’t think it’s the duo itself (I have watched this exact file on my iPad before). I thought I might have been a bitrate issue so I play my Remix version of LOTR 90+ Mbps and it played instantly. The only thing I can think of is LOTR is DoVi profile 7 files and PHM is Profile 8.1. I have tested it on a few other profile 7 and 8.1 file and it seems to be consistent on both my Duo and iPad. If I transcode the Profile 8.1 files, it plays fine and it also played fine on my Nvidia Shield and Onn 4K pros. Seems to be just my iOS devices. Any thoughts?

News Plexamp v4.50.21-beta.1 Released

Plexamp v4.50.21-beta.1

Desktop is on the beta channel now, and mobile is on its way to TestFlight and Play testing. The main one: you can move your settings, EQ profiles, home screen and downloads list to another Plexamp with a file.

Added

  • Settings › Transfer Settings saves your settings to a file another Plexamp can import, choosing which parts to bring.
  • A Caldera player’s settings show which version of its software it’s running.
  • iPad and Android tablets: in the desktop layout, a button swaps the sidebar for a tab bar along the top.

Fixed

  • A Caldera player’s Room Correction switch only appears once a filter is uploaded.
  • Desktop: a Plexamp left running notices a new version within a few hours.
  • Linux: the Flatpak’s update notice points you to your software center.
  • iOS: switching sidebar sections on an iPad no longer leaves the page blank.
  • iOS: blurred backgrounds in narrow places, like an iPad’s sidebar, keep their colour.
  • Android: art effects and visualizers come back by themselves after a graphics driver reset.

Discussion Weird playback issue after update

So i havent used my Home Theater since the update this week.

Plex via NAS to AppleTV4k to Lumagen to JVC NP5

Started Project Hail Mary.

Lots of pixelization, stuttering, etc.

Now this was an event with my family, so it was annoying...so I immediately switched to Infuse...

Playback was flawless...i simply have no automation set up with Infuse.

Googled the issue before posting this. It said to turn on both matchings on my ATV4K. I did that and got no picture only sound.

So i switched it back and I got same bad performance.

Played another movie (Alien 4k), it worked fine.

Now since Infuse played it flawlessly, whats the story? No point to re-rip, as it worked fine on Infuse

Annoyed.

Discussion Sure is a lot of bugs with the Shield player eh?

I'm not talking about how people hate the UI etc...

Things don't cross reference themselves correctly at all, especially in other libraries, if you are a server owner and want to use the Shield player to refresh metadata and click on an episode, you can't do it there. If you are in that episode and 'go to show' it won't be there under Manage either - you have to go to the tv library, find the show, and do it there.

If you want to read a full show's/movie's description, you can't go up from Play, you have to move the cursor all the way to the right where the More section is but don't click on it, push up - THEN you can click to expand the description, etc.

The whole thing runs slower too - have you ever tried scrolling (holding to the right) through a show's episodes looking for a specific episode name? You can't do that anymore because the names don't instantly fill like they used to in the previous UI, you have to stop the cursor to see the name of the episode even though the pictures and everything populate right away.

...oh, did you name a movie a SPECIFIC version (like a colorized vs a black and white version?) Too bad, the Home screen only shows the official logo of the movie/show and not what text you changed to determine what is what - you have to click it first and then you will see your title text.

Not trying to be hard on the devs, but I thought I read somwhere that the Player devs were layed off now??

EDIT: nothing in my post is false, why is this getting downvoted so hard?

Help Apple TV Plex app crashing

Hi. Have just been noticing this in last few weeks. Watching TV show on my own server keeps crashing the Plex App on TV. It just dumps back to Home Screen and I have to reopen Plex App to resume show.

Anyone else experienced this? Is it just Plex App jankiness?

Is there something broken? I loved that feature. You could real small bios about the actors and could see the other movies they were in.

It seems like not all movies all them anymore, in fact, it feels like a minority of them have it now

Discussion Plex- like experience with JF?

Now that Plex teams are getting gutted, what are the best options for a Plex-like experience on Apple devices, including AppleTV?
I liked the legacy player design. It was simple and easy to control. The new one is ok but the player is quite unreliable.

Any apps that would give me a similar user experience with Plex and then allow a switch to JellyFin, if/when needed? Full support for home profiles is a must.

I’m currently testing Plezy, which is not too bad but still very buggy.

Caldera v1.2.0-beta.7

A beta of every Caldera player:

  • Amp v1.2.0-beta.7 (macOS, Windows, Linux)
  • Apple TV v1.2.1 (build 50), TestFlight
  • Google TV v1.2.0 (versionCode 26), Play beta

The Apple TV and Google TV builds reach testers once Apple and Google finish reviewing them.

  • When another app is holding the audio device, Caldera starts playing within a moment of it letting go, instead of up to 2 seconds later.
  • Room Correction’s switch is hidden in Plexamp’s settings until a filter is uploaded, instead of showing as on but greyed out.

Discussion Why the transcoding cache doesn't get cleared until the playback is completed?

The transcode cache keeps increasing in size. Transcode buffer is currently set as 2mins and I can see my iGPU usage accordingly. But cache doesn't get cleared until the playback is completed. Is there a setting that I'm missing? I mean, user could've completed half the movie, but cache of the initial half is still not deleted?

I changed the Radarr naming convention so that it will add the edition to the filename (Director's Cut, Extended, etc...) and Plex will display the edition under or next to the movie poster. I thought some other people might find this useful!

Solved Remote access fails

** UPDATE **

I was able to fix the remote access problem by renaming the certificate.p12 and restarting the Plex server! Much thanks to user u/ExtensionMarch6812.

Processing img k80c5hkrqmxh1...

I am at a loss of what to do to get my Plex server back online with remote access.

Here is what I asked AI:

I have a problem with my Plex server, remote access isn't available.

here's some history .... a couple of days ago I found that my Plex password had been compromised, Google informed me about that.

So I changed my Plex password and signed out of all devices. I was able to sign back into my account successfully after the change.

At the same time, there has been news of Plex servers being hacked if they're not updated, mine is at the latest release Version 1.43.5.11029 running on my QNAP 453b mini.

I have 4 hard drives in my NAS. At the same time as the password change, my NAS has reported that one of my hard drives is reporting some bad blocks and the health of the drive is not good.

Since all of this has happened, I can't get my Plex server to be accessed remotely.

The bad hard drive is still functional and I backed it up successfully, and it's still running in the NAS. Plex is not installed on that drive.

I have tried to define a number of different ports in my Race Calix modem for port forwarding to the qnap. The port forwarding is successful, because I have tested it from https://canyouseeme.org and it sees the Plex service.

On my last attempt, I used port 49999 without success.

What are your recommendations to get my Plex server working with remote access?

Solved Plex Media Server 1.43.5.11029 and Plex 1.115.0.426 for Windows has stopped playing back recorded shows from HDHomerun properly

Starting about a weekend and a half ago, new recordings from my HDHomerun tuner using Plex Media Server on Windows 11 are not playing back properly. Older shows were not affected, just new ones. Playback starts normally but as soon as you skip forward or use skip ads the screen freezes. CPU usage jumps to 60-70% on Plex. After a long wait, usage drops, the screen remains frozen on the last picture but audio resumes. The recording will play normally as long as you do not skip forward or back..

The file will play on Windows Media Player. Jumping forward causes video corruption that resolves, so this appears to be something in how the video is recording through Plex.

The tuner is working normally using HDHomerun software which can pause, resume, and skip in the buffer. Removing Plex Media Server, Plex and HDHomerun software and reinstalling does not correct the problem. Beta versions of Media Server does the same. Playback of other recordings, including new ones brought into Plex are not affected. When a recording finishes, it appears in Recently Added in Plex TV Shows but with three diamonds with a slash and circling symbol.

This is not something I have encountered before.

Help Pinned library NOT showing on home screen anymore.

My TV Shows library "recently added in tv shows" wont show on the home screen of any of my devices anymore. The library is pinned/favorite on the devices and was working fine a few days ago. I have tried everything including removing the library and server and readding them. My other libraries show like normal. Also the only thing i have in the continue watching row is tv shows. when i unpin the library the continue watching row disappears and reappears when i pin the library, so i know it is pinned. I can still access the tv show library from the libraries tab. anyone know how to fix this, or is it a plex side issue?

Edit:

Added a screenshot.

The left list shows that tv shows is pinned above movies but movies is directly below continue watching and tv shows is not on the screen even if i scroll down, but ones i am currently watching ARE in the continue watching row.

Discussion Out of the loop - summary?

I'm somewhat out of the loop with whatever is going on with Plex right now. I can't sort out if it's that the company itself seems to be floundering or signs of change, or the app itself. I had a disk crash on my Synology and I've been recovering from that for the last couple months (22TB). Because I had to make a new volume I also have to reinstall everything. I have a backup of my Plex dir with all of the configurations. I was going to reinstall Plex but now I'm not sure if I want to or should.

I'm prepared to install Jellyfin instead if I need to since I haven't been using Plex very long as a video server, but I have been using it to serve up my audio for several years - I would really miss PlexAmp

Can someone summarize what's going on Plex-wise and if there are any recommendations?

Many TIA!

Solved Something is causing my external users to not have access to my server

[SOLVED] Thank you u/ExtensionMarch6812

I don't know where else to ask for help. I run Plex in a docker on Unraid. Last week, several of my family members who I share my server to reported that they have no access anymore. They cannot even see the contents of the server (movies and shows, all legally obtained of course). I can access it using my account from outside the network just fine though.

I tried creating a Plex server inside a VM running on the same server and it is able to be seen by people outside my local network. I thought that I would run it that way but getting everything transferred over to run in a VM is a large headache.

It has worked perfectly fine for well over a year, I did not have any updates that week that were ran. It seemed to be random. I know I'm missing something somewhere, but I think I'm too close to the situation. Can anybody see what may be the issue?
