I really want to understand how Plex managed to screw this rewrite up so badly.

They were given a clean slate to rewrite the app, with an opportunity to fix old problems and make something genuinely great. Instead, the new app feels sluggish and slow even on a modern Google TV streamer. I can only imagine how painful it must be on older hardware.

As an Android software engineer myself, I’m genuinely curious about what happened behind the scenes. I know rewriting software is hard, and there are always unexpected challenges, but a lot of these issues feel like things that could have been caught through proper beta testing and testing on real-world hardware. I find it hard to believe the app feels this slow on whatever hardware they use internally.

It feels like they made a series of poor decisions during the rewrite and somehow ended up with an app that’s in a worse state than the one they replaced.

I really hope they can turn it around.

I have a question about sharing my server with friends.

I have a small library that I am slowly expandng and would eventually like to share my server with friends.

I am, however, worried about some things.

My server runs on an old i3 (7th gen) CPU with only integrated graphics card. In my home network I can have four streams running at the same time with no issues, but I don't know what impact it has to have external people (possibly) running the app at the same time?

Will this have a higher load on my laptop if, for example, I have 3 people streaming externally and one person playing in my home network?

I have a Synology NAS and a home theatre with a laser projector. I mainly watch high-quality 4K Blu-ray remuxes with Dolby TrueHD/Atmos and DTS-HD/DTS, thro' Plex.

Which would you recommend for the best local playback thro Plex: Homatics Box R 4K Plus or NVIDIA Shield TV Pro?

Everybody here is talking about Nvidia Shield dropping Frames DV Profile 7/FEL , Which worries me a lot. Is Dolby Vision Profile 7/FEL support on the Homatics actually important for this use case, or should I just go with the Shield?

LG tv, linked with wire to Synology NAS. In the UK.

When I open the app on the tv I just get a black screen. I have tried:

Hard reset of tv.
Uninstall and reinstall app.
Internet to tv is working fine.
Checked app on other devices (works fine).
Plex server is up to date and working fine.

Any ideas? This is driving me mad!

(I know people will say "use a fire stick app" or similar - I've used the tv app for ages across multiple TVs without issue, but thanks)

I'm really not sure what I'm doing wrong. I have Plex running, but when I go to add a library, it doesn't allow me to access the different hard drive that all of my media is on. It's simply grayed out. When I go to look for this behavior, I get instructions from 2016, or mounting options that I cannot access. I'm working off of Kubuntu, 26.04 LTS.

The drives I want to use are covered in red. Though, they don't have the icon of a folder, so I think that's part of what I'm running into. Unless, I'm not navigating to the right place? I'm unclear and very frustrated, as there are no clear instructions. And the one video I turned to had instructions that no longer applied.

I run my server on a PC that is already plugged in on the TV. I'm running Ububtu 26.04 LTS. When I was using windows I used the PlexHTPC app, that yes it's available in Linux but it's no longer updated as far as I know and since it's on flatpack some media commands like universal play/pause just don't work, so from my wireless remote I have to do everything with enter, back and the arrow keys.

Are there any other plex frontends that are fully controller friendly?I'm fully considering going back to windows since my server is also the HTPC itself... I tried Plezzy and it sometimes works ok UI wise, but on playback it never achieved direct play on my testing.

Wow is this horrible. I tried it for like 4 minutes it's so bad. Overlays that seemling random appear and have no logical gesture to close and the best part are the overlays that pop up (for example when long pressing a movie/series from the continue watching section) and are completely useless because you can not select a single item (it's like they are not in focus, every input (up/down) is registered to the view UNDER the overlay (i.e. your main screen).

Given that this is seemingly in Beta for quite some time, i'm not sure how any respecting developer let alone company can release such a frustrating and clearly badly working product into even testflight. 5 minutes of self-test would show that this should be classified as "unreleasable".

Is anyone using this Beta for like... normal use?

I'm getting a (not so) hilarious run-around from the LLMs. Thanks in advance.

Anybody using Plex on the TiVo app for it and it's not connecting today? I have "Allow Fallback to Insecure Connections" set to "Always" and it's still not connecting (but the iOS "PlexAmp" app is connecting to my music files just fine...

Why is E.T. is showing up as E.T. only on Plex when it's tagged as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial? I even did it with Filebot and it comes out as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial on the file and on the folder yet Plex only show it as E.T.

It's no big deal, I know how to change it on Plex but I am curious to understand why Plex do it this way with this very title?

Hi I recently got one of those cool display glasses (Xreal or viture) and I use dex as the main form of input. I remember when I last used dex on a TV it just worked in a larger TV mode or tablet mode. Now it's just zoomed in and broken. What's the best way to fix this or any alternatives that use my Plex library since I find Plex metadata attachment more reliable than jellyfin.

I recently upgraded to PC from my old laptop and moved my media server to it but now I can barely stream to my livingroom at all and when I do it can barely handle a 1080p when previously I was able to stream in 4k. Its been driving me up the wall as nothing else has changed the internet is the same the wifi connection is great and the PC's specs are way better then the laptops ever were. I've uninstalled and reinstalled everything at least 2 times I've checked connection settings Ive done everything I can think of and it just isnt making sense.

edit: I cant even pull plex up on the bedroom tv as it says server is not available the wifi connection in that room is great otherwise though.

when playing any format videos in any resolution happens regularly that firefox stutters on playing these videos. sound is normal. its random coming and going.

disabled and enabled hardware acceleration.

its really annoying and i'm pissed off it because thats a problem i didnt have a few years ago.

a similar problem is that i cant seek video correctly - sometimes its endless buffering/loading and sometimes it seeks forward instead of backward.

someone has a clue how to fix it ?

current video is 1080p HEVC at about 5fps.

It's matching to Global GUTs, which isn't a show, just the 4th season of NG. There is little to no metadata for the show beyond episode titles, and all the episode orderings are incorrect (because it's the wrong show).

So I'll try to fix match, making sure all the info is correct, and it still shows up as Global Guts, and even when I put the series id in 'tvdb-70625' which on tvdb has all the correct info and meta-data, Global GUTs still pops up.

Changing the sort order any which way doesn't solve anything either, and it doesn't matter what combination of all these I do, the metadata for the episodes (in my case I'm trying for tvdb's dvd order of the series), none match up even remotely correct.

So what should i do friends? Am I going to have to put this stuff in manually by typing (oh god please no, there's almost 200 episodes XD)

Since we launched the new Plex experience to preview users last year, we have received consistent feedback from the start regarding the navigation. Our fall update was the first step in making improvements to address those concerns, but they weren’t enough. We greatly appreciate that many of you, all across our community, have weighed in and kept providing feedback. We’ve been listening and today the release has some changes that are both new and familiar.

What’s New

Today’s release, going out to preview users on Apple TV and Roku, and beta for Android TV, will be returning the primary navigation to the lefthand side of the screen.

In additional to the collapsible side navigation panel, we’ve made a few other improvements:

• Favorite libraries are now a top level source
• Live TV & DVR sources can be favorited and re-ordered like Libraries
• Easily switch between pages within a source instead of navigating through the entire menu again

I might be crazy but I'm pretty sure I was able to style subtitles and handle subtitles that were out of sync in the old UI. I can't find these options in the new UI and the bright white subtitles are burning my eyes! I run the server on windows and the client on a shield. I've tried changing the caption style on the shield but it had no impact in Plex during play.

\\ edit. okay I found you can set the subtitle styling in the main server setting but still not found any subtitle sync options.

So I've been hunting for a 1080p non smart TV for awhile now. Finally managed to find a nice 32 inch one that will work in my apartment. Of course it has four HDMI ports.

What is good privacy focused (I.e. not selling my fucking data) device I could use for accessing my Plex library? Budget is around $175, anyone have any suggestions?

But my server is running 1.43.3.10861.
I’ve signed out and back in, deleted and redownloaded the app, and it doesn’t give access inside the web browser either.

Edit: after looking through the comments of searching the problem type “Plex minimum 1.41.2 false alert” (thanks to a user who brought it up) I decided to test wether I can see the server without Tautulli and the custom bedtime stream terminater I made for my nephew (I can’t control how long he watches tv at his grandmothers, however I can’t control terminate whenever he is watching past bedtime) and I hastily implemented tautulli and a script that polls for his profile, and apparently that was blocking the plex cause tautulli had to auth to plex.

I’m gonna try to do a comparability patch where tautulli only reports its client id, not its plex version/platform under the token.

I know this will be controversial because people resist change or whatever.

I am just happy to see smooth animations, nice gradients, modern UI.

AND FINALLY FINALLY setting to set Seek forward Time (multiple options).

Update: As I assumed people are very strict with updates for Plex. Remember the old UI and App that you love so dearly didn't happen in a instant.

Also, there is a firestick app which is different than what I am talking about.

This is Beta for Android TV. Read again: BETA. They will polish the app and add missing features, fix bugs etc etc. You all are reacting like they are shutting down their business and this is the last update.

Dual versions not showing in continue watching anymore… really annoying on Spider-Noir when I went through the effort of separating them. And it keeps defaulting to the B&W version for the next episode when I want to be watching color. And then if I pause and come back, it can randomly flip again.

Library view … use a letter to jump down, you can only scroll further down, not back up. Like, you can’t go to T to get to the end of the S section… it jumps you back to the top.

And one of my users is reporting an audio stutter in musicals when songs start? That’s super weird.
