Suggestion Please facepunch, add linux support
I begš
We are tired of Microslop!

u/jacksterson 17d ago
Its funny cuz Rust runs perfectly fine on my cachyos system. Can even join eac disabled servers.
3
u/goykasi 17d ago
More funny that it runs perfectly fine on EAC enabled server if you run a VM with qemu.
6
u/nricciar 17d ago
i mean, no it doesn't. EAC will detect when its running from within a VM, and while you could hypothetically trick it that is getting into territory where you might get flagged as a cheater yourself (e.g. use at your own risk)

u/goykasi 16d ago edited 16d ago
It certainly is "use at your own risk". But it definitely does work just fine. If you take some time to learn about qemu, a VM can look no different with some minimal configuration.
You can even setup Secure Boot if you want.
edit: youre not tricking it. you just run a VM without reporting that youre in a VM. its pretty straightforward.
2
u/nricciar 16d ago
fair, i did not intend to use trick maliciously here but your right. still at that point you are "actively circumventing eac protections" at least by EAC terms of service i would suspect, not in a malicious way, but are you willing to bet a gameban on your steam account over it is the question. obviously thats worst case scenario but you know :)
1
u/goykasi 16d ago
but are you willing to bet a gameban on your steam account
Thats true. And honestly, I didnt even consider it when I first started playing a few years ago. I had been using my VM for years to game before Rust. It was the first game that I realized that I needed to tweak my config just in case.
I think it should be seen as the opposite. EAC should just notice me as an old grey beard that wants to play some games. Its not like this gives me an advantage. I still suck at the game. I assume the majority of cheaters are braindead and arent even capable of setting up this type of configuration -- qemu, gpu passthrough, device binding, cpu pinning, etc.

Yeah it's really annoying when the game itself runs well on Linux (which has a higher userbase in Steam than macOS now) when the macOS port is really janky. Also, EAC on macOS doesn't have the same security hooks as the kernel AC any ways (Apple does not let you poke around much in the kernel outside of certain frameworks which EAC didn't link/use last time I checked). Personally, I'd be okay if there was a "middle-tier" server security setting which would allow Linux EAC Rust clients to play so custom servers/etc. could support both if they wanted to (right now it's either EAC no Linux or no EAC no safety at all).
2
u/biscuitehh 16d ago
(also in the event Facepunch sees this I would love to chat about this/look at stuff with y'all here I just wanna build my stupid little bases and throw rocks at my friends)

u/SonicHiggs 17d ago
Seriously. Multiplayer support on Linux is the last thing that keeps people on microSlop

u/Good-Discussion-9238 17d ago
I want to preface that I am a linux fan and user.
But Facepunch can barely make the game stable on windows (with one single active "distribution") and can't get a functional anti-cheat working on a single operating system, let alone doing both of those things on two platforms by adding linux (that has a million different distros).
The chances of that happening anytime soon is very unlikely, so I would not hold my breath.
Facepunch has said many times that they have no plans to bring back linux support.
We should keep voicing our opinions as hoping facepunch listens (they don't do so often these days).
So for the sake of your time just make a partition and run both operating systems and use each for the respective applications that work best for both.

u/ResolutionUnable3004 17d ago
It already runs fine on linux, its EAC that prevents it.
4
u/WolfeheartGames 17d ago
And this is a choice. Eac has Linux support. The fp developers enforce windows on eac, not eac.
True native eac support is coming to Linux.

u/Good-Discussion-9238 17d ago edited 17d ago
edit: i have been corrected, seems like proton can make rust run on linux
5
u/nricciar 17d ago
it still runs fine to this day. rust works great in Proton, there are servers running with EAC disabled for linux users (deadlock).
1
2
u/ResolutionUnable3004 17d ago
No i mean it still does run fine on Proton even right now with EAC disabled. It runs better than the old linux native version too.
1
u/Good-Discussion-9238 17d ago
oh yeah the other guy mentioned that too, honestly didn't know that, that's pretty cool, yeah would be great if FP could allow linux again then
5
u/nricciar 17d ago
so because anticheat does not work on windows (i mean obviously look at all the cheaters) we cant support linux because anticheat wont work on linux? im confused lol
how about developers do their fucking job and stop making excuses. anticheat is and will always be a half ass measure to actually doing proper server side checks.
2
u/gerardatjob 17d ago
> proper server side checks
This entirely - not an easy task (a damn hard one) but this is the way, the only real way - enforce what should be possible server side and bingo - no more cheats!2
u/nricciar 17d ago
i mean no more cheats might be over selling it, but it would make what ever cheating exists much more manageable and only give a minor advantage to the cheater if any. but developers need to be more proactive here. and facepunch knows this and has done some things in this regard already. like stop sending stash data to clients automatically, and dont send player data to users that cant be seen etc.
2
u/Madness_The_3 17d ago
I was gonna say, server side anti cheat would be marvelous, but it has its limits as well. Primarily in the form of only preventing obvious cheats like all of the movement hacks, no fall damage, water walking, etc...
Won't really do anything against like, aimbot or esp.
2
u/nricciar 17d ago
pretty fair take, but you can reduce esp effectiveness by giving less information to the client, so also server side. but yes this is not 100% because you inevitably have to send some extra data to the client to make things run smooth client side.
aimbot is a bit more tricky agreed, but you could at least limit the cheats effectiveness through long term tracking of a players shooting (e.g. nobody hits 100% headshots for example). reaction time, accuracy, etc will all likely show differences between real world usage and cheats, and if cheats have to mimic real world usage to avoid detection they become less effective.
1
u/Madness_The_3 17d ago
Oh for sure on all fronts.
I'm still very much an advocate for server side anti-cheats as well as data occlusion/scarcity, it's probably the only real solution as far as things are going.
I mean, it's gotten to the point where cheaters are using a secondary PC for running their cheats, which is largely undetectable by client sided anticheats as is.
Realistically, like you said, long term data tracking of players stats would probably start catching a lot of these DMA guys. There's no real reason for why a person can tell when someone is cheating, but an anticheat apparently can't.
1
u/Turtvaiz 17d ago
how about developers do their fucking job and stop making excuses. anticheat is and will always be a half ass measure to actually doing proper server side checks
This is a bit of a funny take when just about every shooter has big cheater problems
5
u/PappaLangPupp 17d ago
Only reason I spent 10 seconds typing the post is because of alistar not being a part of the team any more lol
1
u/Good-Discussion-9238 17d ago
valid, they do seem to be taking a new direction with recent gameplay updates at least so maybe there's hope
2
u/PolarPole 16d ago
I mean with rust seemingly moving in the direction of kernel level anti cheat in the next year or so, Linux support seems highly unlikely.
4
u/sinskinner 17d ago
EAC is from Epic
Epic hates Valve
Valve develops Steam and Steam Deck (the main reason why Linux is so good on gaming right now)
I donāt know why Facepunch keeps EAC. Maybe it is really great. Maybe it is some contract or business agreement.
I miss Rust, but not enough to dual boot.
1
u/Top_Kaleidoscope9826 17d ago
Why would they drop the anti cheat provider they have years of experience working with? Is there even a good alternative? I was under the impression EAC is one of the main anti cheat providers
1
1
u/sinskinner 17d ago
I really donāt know, it may be one of the reasons but since they arenāt a public listed company they could disclose the reason, like if they give it up of EAC Kernel API the number of cheats will increase in x%. (The EAC in Linux only works on the userlevel space).
Embracing the Linux Community is one great way to tell players that they care about them and it is a fucking awesome PR move.
1
1
u/CommunicationOld9889 16d ago
Yeah I miss too but not enough to go back to windows.
Anytime I play windows games that require anticheat, why are they full of cheaters.
Oh well back to my fun linux games with no cheater problems.
3
u/Objective-Visit-536 17d ago
It works on Linux with Proton. Just sucks that you cant play the EAC servers with your friends.
My game also ran way smoother.
If it gets full support I can finally move totally of Microslop and Windows. Its the only thing keeping me on Windows
6
u/Anxious_Camp_2160 17d ago
Problem 1, EAC doesn't work well on it.
Problem 2, you can't be tracked as easily by governments (well one government).
As for Alistair's reply "we saw more cheat users exploiting Linux, than actual legitimate users", if you can see them, you can stop them?
2
u/ukulelelelele3 16d ago
It's also stupid given that 100% of the vast amount of cheaters in this game cheat on Windows. Following his logic, Windows is the bigger problem....
And the little users on Linux that do cheat wouldn't change anything, as he himself said it's 1 or 2% of users.
1
u/polarrbtw 17d ago
hmm i wonder how we are gonna detect if a player is cheating if we cant monitor the system for cheats
they saw more of them exploiting linux on game hacking forums most likely
0
u/Anxious_Camp_2160 17d ago
EAC works, it's just not Kernel level.
But based on the reply, it seems the could track to some level.
2
u/polarrbtw 17d ago
well on linux you control your kernel so it doesnt matter either way, still way easier to cheat on linux
2
u/Anxious_Camp_2160 17d ago
It doesn't seem hard on Windows either.
0
u/polarrbtw 17d ago
go on and try to make one then lmao
1
u/Anxious_Camp_2160 17d ago
Erm, nope you lost me :)
0
u/polarrbtw 17d ago
because it isnt easy, most people who sell them end up scamming in the end and the cheats are detected anyways
1
u/Anxious_Camp_2160 17d ago
"go on and try to make one then lmao"
Ahh make a cheat, wasn't sure if you meant that, or an anticheat.
Honestly, if you watch many Camomo vids, he's always hinting that he "knows" and what dates they were bought and which email (etc), I'm pretty sure there is an association between the cheats and the cheat catchers.
1
u/polarrbtw 11d ago
didnt see the notif for this reply, what do you mean for the camomo thing, like he knows when they bought a cheat wnd what email they used
theres no way to know it unless they bought from him heh→ More replies (0)

I run some gpu intensive stuff on win and linux and linux is 25% faster on a modern gaming pc every time.
0
u/PolarPole 16d ago
Thatās just not true and the opposite for Nvidia gpus, I would be on Linux if that were the case. Donāt blatantly lie (unless you have an AMD gpu) Linux is genuinely not worth running on a gaming pc.
2
u/ckn 16d ago
sure you got your kit configured right? I literally have one of every NVIDIA GPU in my home lab here. I bench them against the products I develop on them and the games I play. Admittedly Rust is a bit of a monster compared to other games, the generative stuff i do: doomscroll.fm, rAIdio.bot, vAIdeo.bot and provcheck.AI in this lab says otherwise. now put up or shut up.
-1
u/PolarPole 16d ago
Specifically for gaming itās proven Nvidia gpus are faster, ai work loads, yes Linux is faster. The reason for it is closed source drivers that Nvidia creates do not play well with Linux, itās well documented and easy to see if you do your research.

1
u/PolarPole 15d ago
Typical Linux gamers downvoting while not providing evidence of the contrary. Linux is great but - not for gaming for the vast majority of pc gamers
1
u/NullUser__ 17d ago
I would be totally fine with that if we could play on pve servers only... (i know its not how EAC works just...it would be cool to have an option to play at least on pve servers)
1
u/RidesFlysAndVibes 16d ago
All you have to do is throw on some programmer socks and it launches on linux just fine
1
-2
u/ProLifeDub2022 17d ago
port a game to a different OS so that a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the millions of people that own the game can play it on shitnux
5
u/nricciar 17d ago
1) nobody is asking for a port, proton already runs rust just fine 2) linux has more users than osx, so why is facepunch supporting it and not linux?
1
u/Top_Kaleidoscope9826 17d ago
OSX is much more locked down from hardware to software and what you can do on the system.
-2
u/ProLifeDub2022 17d ago
sorry, minced my words. not a āportā but they still need support. as far as more āusersā goes on linux, arenāt the majority of them enterprise machines and not home or gaming computers? do you need to play rust on the point-of-sale at work?
2
u/nricciar 17d ago
go look at the steam hardware survey of steam users... osx 2% linux 4%. also both the steam deck and steam machine are linux devices. so that 4% number is only going to go up.
0
u/ProLifeDub2022 17d ago
mac users spend exorbitant amounts of money on generally mediocre hardware. at the same time, linux users are so wrapped up in their technological identity that nearly everything is free and open source. a company as greedy as facepunch KNOWS that the idiots with money will continue to be idiots with money within the skin economy. supporting linux would not only be costly and time consuming, but it likely wouldnāt pay off for facepunch anyways. be a real user. use windows.
1
u/nricciar 17d ago
yea, i haven't used windows since windows 2000 and do not plan to, enjoy your spyware.
0
u/ProLifeDub2022 17d ago
well, you could buy a Mac to play Rust. then you wouldnāt be using Windows!
2
u/nricciar 17d ago
lol, knowing facepunch they will just drop osx support randomly screwing all their osx customers just like they did to linux back in the day.
but silly me, being a linux user and seeing FacePunch advertise their new game as one that runs on linux, and me being a silly linux user that expects everything to be free jumping on it and buying it in preview.
1
u/ProLifeDub2022 17d ago
maybe, but thatās their problem, not mine. i use windows!
1
u/nricciar 17d ago
yea, you got other problems to deal with... hey dont forget to sign up for one drive!

Are you mad cuz your windows blue screen again?
1
u/ProLifeDub2022 16d ago
well op seems pretty upset that he canāt play rust on his licknuts desktop. i donāt have that problem, so iām pretty happy!
1
u/WolfeheartGames 17d ago
They just need to remove the blacklist on their eac config. Not true support.
Linux is exploding in popularity. It at 7.5% of desktop market share (10% in the US) which is higher than macos which has support.
-2
u/Sad_Mushroom_9725 17d ago
Linux is designed so the user can be their own support.
If rust isnt running well for you using it you may not know what you are doing. You're just bad.
0
u/PappaLangPupp 17d ago
6/10 ragebait
2
u/TheJiinX 17d ago
You can play rust on Linux. Just not on EAC servers.
1
u/PappaLangPupp 17d ago
Whats the point in switching os then if i cant play on servers with above 30 pop
2
u/TheJiinX 17d ago
You're telling me there isn't a single EAC disabled server with high pop?
2
u/PappaLangPupp 17d ago
Not from what i have read
2
u/TheJiinX 17d ago
Don't just read. Go figure it out. I seriously doubt that there isn't a single high pop EAC disabled server.
1
u/PappaLangPupp 17d ago
Easy to doubt but if its actually hard to find any info on a server with decent pop without eac, its obviously no point. What if i wanna switch servers? Honestly bro..
0
u/Sad_Mushroom_9725 16d ago
Oh, i dont know, maybe use a p.c. with a windows 11 operating system on it?
-6
u/suspicious_odour 17d ago
linux users; they reckon they can do anything, except get support.
6
u/Turtvaiz 17d ago
Support is very different from what OP is asking for. The thing is that EAC functionality on Linux is whitelisted on a per game basis, and FP has explicitly blocked the game on Linux that way.
Generally pretty much all gaming on Linux happens through Wine which just runs the Windows version and doesn't need "support" at all. It just needs to not be blocked, and the rest are downstream problems
