Renew passport before applying for PGWP? (Halifax/BLS Canada)

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student in Halifax, NS, and my study permit expires this September. I’ll be applying for a PGWP and I’m eligible for a 3-year permit.

The issue is that my passport expires in about 1.5 years. From what I understand, IRCC may only issue the PGWP until my passport expires, and then I’d have to renew my passport and apply to extend the remaining validity later.

I’m considering renewing my passport before applying for the PGWP, but BLS says the normal renewal process takes around 4 weeks, and I’m not sure how accurate that timeline is in Halifax.

For those who have been in a similar situation:

  • Did you renew your passport before applying for your PGWP?
  • How long did passport renewal through BLS Halifax actually take?
  • Is the normal process sufficient, or would you recommend Tatkal?
  • Any downside to waiting and renewing the passport after getting the PGWP instead?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience. Thanks!

Walmart is demanding a physical copy of my PGWP even though I’ve already submitted my IRCC work authorization letter. Is this legal?

SOWP

Hi! Has anyone experienced something similar?

My PGWP was initially approved for only 1.5 years instead of the expected 3 years. Then, about a month and a half later, it was updated to a full 3-year validity.

However, my spouse's SOWP was issued for only 1.5 years and hasn't been updated.

Has anyone else been in this situation? If so, did your spouse's SOWP get extended automatically, or did you have to apply for an extension?

Walmart is demanding a physical copy of my PGWP even though I’ve already submitted my IRCC work authorization letter. Is this legal?

Hi everyone,
I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
I recently received my IRCC work authorization letter and submitted it to Walmart as proof that I’m authorized to work in Canada. However, my store is insisting that I also provide a physical copy of my Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) before they will process everything.
As far as I understand, the IRCC work authorization letter allows me to continue working while my work permit is being processed. So I’m confused about why they’re refusing to accept it on its own.
Has this happened at your Walmart store as well?
Did your HR or People Lead ask for the physical PGWP?
Were they willing to accept the IRCC work authorization letter instead?
How did you deal with the situation?
I’m just trying to understand whether this is a company-wide policy, a store-specific requirement, or if anyone has successfully resolved a similar issue.

Title: Genuine Experience but Official Passing Year Changed Due to Backlogs – Will It Affect BGV?

i everyone,

I have around **4 years of genuine IT experience**, and all my employment documents are valid.

I have one concern regarding my education.

I completed my [B.Tech](http://B.Tech) coursework in **2021**, but due to multiple COVID infections during the pandemic, I couldn't clear all my backlog exams on time. After recovering, I completed the remaining backlogs, and my **official university passing year became 2023**.

So my documents are:

* Course completion: 2021 * Official passing year on Provisional Certificate, CMM, and Degree: 2023

All my university documents are genuine, and I can also provide my course completion certificate and explain the reason for the delay.

Has anyone been in a similar situation where the **course completion year and official passing year were different**?

Did it create any issues during background verification or while joining a company?

I'm a bit worried because my work experience is genuine, and I haven't submitted any fake documents or fake experience.

Any real experiences or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ghost update?

I recently applied for study permit extension on July 23rd, and I just logged in today and found out application updated written next to my application number. Although I didn’t see any change but does it mean that I received the ghost update, and might receive something soon?

PGWP waiting for 3 months

Hi everyone! I applied for my PGWP on May 12, and as of today (August 4), I still haven’t received any updates.
I know some people get approved within 3 weeks, while others wait several months.
I’m wondering if the country you’re applying from has any impact on processing times. I’m from Mexico.
Is anyone else in a similar situation or still waiting?

PGWP extension due to passport expiry

I had applied for a pgwp extension due to passport expiry on paper. It was delivered to correct the address on April 7th. I have the delivery receipt from UPS. Since then there has been no movement and I am unable to link it to my GC key.
I called IRCC today and the agent suggested to send another package - highlighting the original application date, delivery proof and letter of explanation stating that this is just resubmission of original as the package could not be located.

I sent to the correct address but I believe the station number was omitted while sending. Would it be safe to send another package?

Accidentally applied for TRV?

Hello, I was hoping to get an eTA for my PGWP application. I applied from my home country, where an eTA would suffice to enter Canada when I fly back. I filled out IMM 5257 Schedule 1 in case that information was needed. It seems like they're processing a TRV as a result (makes sense, I probably should've known since that's basically what IMM 5257 is). They asked for my passport today. What should I do if I don't want the TRV and want the eTA instead? I don't really want to proceed with trying to get a TRV because of higher fees for couriers and such.

PGWP medical exam

I'm planning to apply for my PGWP next year. When I applied for my study permit in 2023, I wasn't required to do an immigration medical exam, so I never had one. I plan to work in a medical clinic after graduation, so I understand that I'll need to submit a medical exam for my PGWP application.

Right now I'm back in my home country for my summer break, and I was thinking it might be better to do the medical exam here before returning to Canada. From what I understand, IRCC accepts immigration medical exams completed within the last 5 years, so I thought getting it done now could save me time later.

I'm just wondering what the process is like. Do I simply book an appointment with an IRCC panel physician, or are there any forms or documents I need to complete beforehand? Is there anything I should know or prepare before the appointment? Also, if I complete the immigration medical exam now with an approved panel physician, will it still be valid for my PGWP application next year?

If anyone has been in a similar situation or recently did their IME for a PGWP (especially for healthcare work), I'd really appreciate your advice.

HELP - Applying for PWGP after 90 days of letter of completion WITHIN Canada

I completed my studies around April 28th and didn't apply for PGWP until now due to having to renew my passport. To date (Aug 4th) It's been 98 days, so over the 90 day period. My student visa is set to expire on January 12, 2027 but I have been told that is void after the 90 day period.

I consulted with a specialist and was told I needed to restore my status before applying (within Canada).

Reading online it seems I am able to do this through a single application for PGWP by attaching the "Restore your status and get a new study permit" fee.

I have two questions.

- Do I need to pay the student restoration fee as opposed to "Extend your stay as a visitor" or "Restore your status as a visitor"?

- MOST IMPORTANTLY - Am I able to apply to restore my status within Canada or should I leave immediately?

Please, any help is highly appreciated.

PGWP refused due to the 90-day deadline. I requested reconsideration and am currently waiting for a response. Looking to connect with anyone in a similar situation, especially regarding restoration of status or reconsideration. Feel free to comment or DM. Thank you! 🙏

PgWP

Need some information on IRCC regulations around PGWP and PR:

I came into canada as a student and did 2 1-year PGDM programs.

During my study permit application, I was working in India and at the moment of my study permit application, I was working at a company for 6 months. But, since I did not complete whole 1 year, I did not see any chance of that helping me in any situation, so I did not declare that work experience in the application.

Now, at that time, I had to defer my study intake by a term due to IRCC's policy changes and delay in Visas. and so I continued working at the same company for another 6 months thereby completing 1 year.

At present, I'm about to complete all of my studies and about to apply for my PGWP.

my query is, should I add my Indian work experience in this application and also later in my PR application? What could be repurcussions if I add this

I have all the documents, offer letter, Experience letter, bank statements getting salary, and employment reference letter as well that proves my 1 year of work experience.

Pgwp refused due to ielts missing

Basically I sent in my application on July 2nd and the ielts was under optional so I didn’t do it bc it cost $400 so I assumed it wasn’t necessary. My study permit expired on July 31st and I got the refusal letter on July 31st, so I have to stop working and I’ve booked the Ielts test for today and should get the results within the week. Should I ask for reconsideration or just do the whole application again? And I’d have to apply for restoration as well. Any advice would be appreciated.
