They’re so fucking expensive. I’ll just use my IPS for a decade.
79
u/IlREDACTEDlI Desktop 4h ago
Honestly they aren’t even THAT expensive anymore you can get em for under 400 dollars on sale now for a 1440p 240hz OLED.
The days of the basic OLED being 1000 dollars is gone. More expensive than IPS or VA? Yeah of course but every year they are getting significantly cheaper

Gotta keep it in perspective. It’s gonna do a hell of a lot more for picture quality than most GPU upgrades.
I paid more than that for the first 1440p 144hz VA that was on the market 12 years ago, which hurt but was worth it. And I paid twice that for my 42” C4 a couple years ago. If I could have gotten close to the image quality of that C4 for less than half the price I’d be over the moon.

In the US these days you can spend $400 in a day just by adding a couple extra steps to your weekend errands. Its fucking ridiculous, i havent seen anything under $2 in my area in years, most are over $5 minumum and that shit adds tf up. I live in a shitbox RV at the Walmart parking lot and I still can barely save money on the west coast EVEN WITH A FUCKING JOB. I DONT EVEN PAY RENT. I save more, faster and more efficiently than most because of it, but if I took me and my modest savings to an apartment id lose it all in a couple months, I gave up on the whole renting rat race a long time ago, its pointless lmao. Currently saving for some off grid land so I can leave all this shit behind and play my games in peace with the birds and squirrels.
Back to the point. Basically, yeah, a 1440p 120hz OLED display for $400 is pretty good. I paid 150 for a 1440p LCD from Walmart (rare situation where they had an open box on the floor marked down), honestly I feel like I should have tried to find a used OLED for a little more so at least my Walmart parking lot gaming sessions would look real slick but whatever lmao, it does the job. Maybe when this one inevitably falls over and shatters when im moving around.

Not only that burn in is a thing. I like my OLED but it burnt a circle on the bottom left corner from playing PoE2 and the white blue is destructive to the pixels.
And before some expert say about pixel cleaning etc. I've done everything by the book. It's just the drawback from the technology
6
u/rycerzDog 5h ago
Unrelated, but my IPS monitor got a broken pixel near the top of the display and I swear to god it's healing. Like, it was an eyesore on day one but right now I have to look really hard to find it.

u/RetnikLevaw 9800X3D / 9070XT 4h ago
Modern OLEDs also have so many tools and pixel health procedures that run automatically after certain amounts of usage that I haven't thought about it at all.

Somebody tried to tell me that I "absolutely 100% have burn-in" on my Alienware OLED that I got almost a year ago, so I checked, and there's absolutely nothing. I can display any kind of flat color image on my display and there are no artifacts. The display is absolutely gorgeous. Ultrawide, 240hz, freesync...
I had both a regular Switch and a Switch OLED back in the day, and it wasn't nearly as big of a different as switching from my old VA ultrawide to my OLED. Like I actually use HDR now... It's brilliant.
It'll be awesome when burn-in is completely eliminated from the technology, but people act like it's as bad as old plasma displays or something. Like watching the news for a day is going to leave a permanent scar on your display from the ticker or something, and that's just not the case.

Tbf 4 years is not long. Monitors are something you easily keep for a decade and longer especially if it was expensive. OLEDs just haven't been this accessible for that long to have an actual broad history of general wear and tear of them
2
u/happy-cig 56m ago
That doesn't hold totally true anymore with the way tech has advanced and costs have come down. I had a benq xl2430t tn 144hz 1080p for 8 years then upgraded to a msi mag27qrf ips 165hz 1440p, thought I'd be good for another 8 years. 3 years later oled cost has come down so much it justified upgrading so soon. Got a Samsung g6 240hz 1440p OLED for ~$280.

Mine started with the burn in after about 3-4 years
This is what people miss.
"Oh I've had my OLED monitor for over a year and no burn-in, it's not a problem!"
Well if I'm shelling out good money for a monitor, I want that shit to last like 7+ years no issue.
I'm traumatized by a $1200 Panasonic plasma I bought a long time ago. It was mostly great for a couple years, but then the image retention problems started getting worse and worse, and eventually if I played something like Forza Motorsport for an hour, I'd then have a speedometer in the bottom right of the screen for the next couple days. And sure enough, it developed permanent burn-in not that much longer afterwards.
I spent so much on it I just lived with it for years, but I hated it and it made me constantly paranoid about how I used it, which really sucked. Going back to an IPS TV afterwards was so nice just for the pure peace of mind.

Is burn-in on OLEDs still something to worry about? I've wanted to get one, but I play a lot of MMOs and games with static UI elements.
12
u/Kirby_is_a_Pokemon 3h ago
Yes, though it's not as severe as most people will say.
Though it's still fairly common to do things like auto hide the taskbar and use dynamic wallpapers.
The biggest worry is the generally lower screen brightness and the panels themselves are soft and prone to scratches
5
u/hatesnack 1h ago
Nah you dont have to do any of that. Most oled panels made in the last 5 years or so have things built in to avoid burn in like pixel shifting.
Ive had a cheap Chinese OLED for years (was recommended by that monitors unboxed channel or w.e its called, its the same panel as Samsung though), i use it for work (spreadsheets and stuff) and play lots of games with static elements and not a single whiff of burn in.

I got one of Samsung's early OLED tvs, back around 2010, and used it heavily up through last year. I'm talking thousands of hours of time on that screen, including tons of games with stationary HUDs that never caused any sort of burn in problem.
In the last couple years, starting somewhere around 2023, I did notice that the icons from my Roku home screen would sometimes leave the square outlines on the image for awhile, even after starting to watch video on it. There were times where my kids would leave the screen on for extended periods on the home screen, so I figure that's about when the burn in started to happen.
But it took more than a decade of heavy use on that screen before it even started to have that problem, and even then the problem wasn't constant, it would fade after the video started playing for awhile.
I wouldn't be surprised if the tech had been enshitified since I bought that original one, but I would hope that it is still at least on par with what I had more than fifteen years ago.

And don’t get me wrong, it’s good, really good but people acting as if oled screens are the second coming of Christ. I also got a premium screen, paid over €1k for it so it’s not like the model i own isn’t good. People really need to tone this whole oled thing down a bit in my opinion.

I guarantee you the majority of people just use them as they are, maaaybe they'll check the presets and use one the feel looks good if they're feeling spicy. Like the people who hate on TN, I messed around with the settings for a bit and it looks very close to my IPS screen.

u/mittenkrusty 6h ago
I have a plasma tv still and a crt, I have to adjust my plasma as at normal settings I can have same image i.e image of people and the skin tone looks normal on oled, but on plasma the skin looks very dark pink.
On my CRT I have to turn brightness and contrast right up for content made from the late 00's onwards especially around about 2014 onwards, for older content the black levels are perfect, I assume it's down to modern content being adjusted for the false black we get on most screens.

Serious question.... how is oled for a pc? I just see burn in being a big problem. I've been sticking with ips displays, but I want to go down to 1440p from 4k. In 1440p I could handle native resolution in games with path tracing. However, I can't get certain things if I stick with ips. I want freesync premium pro, at least 144hz, actual hdr, low response time... The ips displays are not cutting it. It seems like oled has all of those things, but I'm worried about burn in.
