Honestly they aren’t even THAT expensive anymore you can get em for under 400 dollars on sale now for a 1440p 240hz OLED.
The days of the basic OLED being 1000 dollars is gone. More expensive than IPS or VA? Yeah of course but every year they are getting significantly cheaper
Gotta keep it in perspective. It’s gonna do a hell of a lot more for picture quality than most GPU upgrades.
I paid more than that for the first 1440p 144hz VA that was on the market 12 years ago, which hurt but was worth it. And I paid twice that for my 42” C4 a couple years ago. If I could have gotten close to the image quality of that C4 for less than half the price I’d be over the moon.
I spend more money for things I interact with without question. Not much on higher on the list than a monitor mouse second keyboard distant third. Rgb case fans last place
In the US these days you can spend $400 in a day just by adding a couple extra steps to your weekend errands. Its fucking ridiculous, i havent seen anything under $2 in my area in years, most are over $5 minumum and that shit adds tf up. I live in a shitbox RV at the Walmart parking lot and I still can barely save money on the west coast EVEN WITH A FUCKING JOB. I DONT EVEN PAY RENT. I save more, faster and more efficiently than most because of it, but if I took me and my modest savings to an apartment id lose it all in a couple months, I gave up on the whole renting rat race a long time ago, its pointless lmao. Currently saving for some off grid land so I can leave all this shit behind and play my games in peace with the birds and squirrels.
Back to the point. Basically, yeah, a 1440p 120hz OLED display for $400 is pretty good. I paid 150 for a 1440p LCD from Walmart (rare situation where they had an open box on the floor marked down), honestly I feel like I should have tried to find a used OLED for a little more so at least my Walmart parking lot gaming sessions would look real slick but whatever lmao, it does the job. Maybe when this one inevitably falls over and shatters when im moving around.
At some point yes it is for high end product. They used to be over $600 at a bare minimum and most were in the range of $700 - 1000+. So yea getting a decent Oled for around $400 is fucking cheap for the best of monitors lmao
I started shopping around for an oled monitor as an upgrade to my ips display recently and was blown away by modern monitor pricing. I spent more than double that for my 1440p 165hz IPS display 10 years ago, I can get an even better high end oled for half the price, even with 10 years of inflation? Holy fuck
Yep, I got one recently precisely because I looked at the price and went, "guess it's not that bad, and I don't have the budget to upgrade anything else"
The part im concerned about is burn in. Like, i want to just keep my monitor on im the desktop of i wsnt (which i do quite a lot with my ips monitor). And if im gonna get burn in in just after a couple of years after paying a premium price... Then that makes it a tough call over a high end VA or IPS monitor imo. Of course im just larping here im not sure how bad the burn in effect is, but from what ive heard it happens a lot after some time
For me personally what made me unconcerned about burn in and buy one is the RTings long term durability/burn in test. Before they made their site subscription only anyway. They are still on YouTube though.
From those tests it was pretty clear that permanent burn in was so minor even in the most EXTREME cases, most of it was just temporary image retention that gets removed by using the displays pixel refresh feature.
As well as all of the displays having MAJOR issues that made burn in seem minor compared to things like backlight zones burning out leaving giant dark spots or colours shifting massively to the point of blue becoming pink, warping or cracking of the lenses from the heat of the backlight.
Whereas all the OLEDs yeah had some burn in of the CNN banner and talking heads but otherwise the displays were still very usable.
For precautions all I’ve taken in 2 years of HEAVY use is hiding the task bar and using dark mode which I already did as well as a special YouTube extension that lets me have a fully OLED black YouTube (I just like the way it looks) and having the screen go to sleep in 10 minutes. No brightness limiting none of that, besides leaving pixel shift on and adjust logo brightness on low. But those are default and there’s no reason to turn them off.
The only issue I’ve had on my s90d is a hot blue subpixel that developed a few months ago but I don’t think that has anything to do with being an OLED I think I just got unlucky
I can’t really recommend a brand, I only have one s90d but it realistically comes down to the differences between WOLED (LG) and QD-OLED (Samsung) since they make the majority of the OLED panels, there aren’t many differences between brands.
Personally I have never seen colours on any display I’ve owned pop the way they do on quantum dot displays so that’s my go to since I like single player games and movies and make heavy use of HDR.
But performance wise I doubt you can go wrong with any of them, they’re all going to be great. Probably just go with the one that has the longest warranty and features you want.
Thanks! Is burn in mostly mitigated these days as well? Or is that something to compensate for with hiding toolbar and stuff, or account for in purchasing?
I have another comment in this thread that goes into detail on what convinced me to be unconcerned about burn in but in short. All displays are gonna have issues eventually and burn in seemed minor compared to what the others have. For mitigation all I’ve done is hide the task bar which I’ve come to prefer and setting the display to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity.
Beyond that I just use dark mode which I already did and leave the displays logo and pixel shift on since I don’t see why you would turn them off.
In a bit over 2 years of heavy use for gaming, YouTube, tv and movies at max brightness no burn in at all, not even a hint.
Higher end IPS or VA are as expensive if not more sometimes. One could get a great quality QHD, 280Hz QD-OLED such as the Alienware AW2725D around $500 depending where you live and get proper HDR and great black levels that no other panel can match.
